Case Study on Ofelia\u27s Cashew Products and Pasalubong
Ofelia’s Cashew Products and Pasalubong was established by Mrs. Ofelia Frando in 2000 as a cashew processing business. The products they offer are roasted cashew nuts, cashew butter, peanut butter with cashew bits, and other pasalubong items like banana chips, chichacorn pack, uraro, pusit jar, dilis jar, mamon tustado, peanut brittle jar, and kamote chips. They are located at located at Brgy. Binukawan, Bagac, Bataan, they also have two (2) mall stalls that are in Walter Mart Balanga and the other in Vista Mall Balanga.
The purpose of this study it to analyze and evaluate the performance of Ofelia’s Cashew Products and Pasalubong as well as to and formulate strategies that can address the issues it is facing. Specifically, it aimed to: (a) present the profile of Ofelia’s Cashew Products and Pasalubong; (b) analyze the business in terms of the four business functions; (c) evaluate the business environment prevailing at the particular time of the case; (d) identify the strategic issues currently being faced by the business; (e) distinguish the strategic functions of the business; and (f) design an implementation plan to address the problems of the business.
Through the analytical framework, this study analyzed the environment of the business through external and internal analysis. External analysis includes the economic, demographic, natural, technological, legal-political, and socio-cultural forces while internal analysis is the industry analysis of the cashew industry. It also shows the four business functions of marketing, finance, personnel, and operation to initiate the case proper.
The study uses a case research design to describe the profile and preset the conditions of the business. Personal interviews were conducted with the owners and staff of the businesses by using interview guides. To assess Ofelia’s Cashew Products and Pasalubong, different analysis such as SWOT Analysis, IFE and EFE Matrices, CPM, and Financial Ratio Analysis.
Results show that one of the main issue that needs to be addressed is the lack of manpower that caused overworked staff and cancellation of orders which in turn will force the customers to shift to the business’ competitors. Another is the spoilage of raw cashew nuts because the business is not maximizing the work and orders that is causing them to have a surplus of raw cashew nuts. Next issue is the unorganized tools, materials, and records which are ending up lost and destroyed when there are calamities present. An issue regarding the level of promotional strategy must be addressed in order to reach more potential customers. It can be inferred that most issues within the business can be solved by addressing personnel issues. If Ofelia’s Cashew Products and Pasalubong address its personnel issues, the business will be able to address most of the problems it’s facing now which in turn, can increase their productivity and further increase their sales and market share.
A vision and mission statement, and objectives were proposed for the business to have a direction they can look back on. Through the analysis, different strategies for the business were formulated in order to eliminate or lessen the problems they are facing. These strategies formed includes: (a) hiring more employees; (b) conducting general meetings; (c) regularly cleaning the processing house; (d)checking maintenance of machines; (e) trying new strategies; (f) attending workshops and seminars; and (g) strengthening their social media presence

A study on the effect of various culture media on the growth development of Phaleonopsis grandiflora Reich. f. ovules
Ovules of Phalaenopsis grandiflora Reichb. f. were excised at the early-embryo and multicellular embryo stage and were cultured on five-media-basal Vacin and Went’s solution, Vacin and Went’s solution plus 25 per cent coconut water, Murashige ad Skoog’s solution, Knudson’s C and Tsuchiya’s medium. Relatively earlier greening was observed in multicellular embryo cultures. Murashige and Skoog’s medium best enhanced greening and subsequent seedling growth. The addition of coconut water at 25 per cent (by volume) to basal Vacin and Went’s solution enhanced greening of multicellular embryos, slightly inhibited seedling growth of early-embryo cultures and seemed to stimulate seedling growth of multicellular embryo cultures
Qualitative analysis of acceptability of telenutrition among adult patients in IHNF Nutrition & Wellness Clinic during the Covid-19 pandemic
The use of telenutrition by private clinics and hospitals increased drastically during the COVID-19 pandemic, this is to allow the provision of nutrition services despite the lockdowns and other social-distancing protocols. The effective implementation of any mode of healthcare delivery including telenutrition is heavily influenced by client preference and acceptance. Ten semi-structured interviews guided by the theoretical framework of acceptability were conducted from July to August 2022. Participants were purposively sampled from the adult patients of the UPLB-IHNF Nutrition & Wellness Clinic during the COVID-19 pandemic. A survey questionnaire related to the patients’ demographic data, internet, and technology access and use was also given prior to the actual interview. The participants represented a wide range of ages from 19-59 years old. The majority of them are females (90%) and earned a college degree or higher (90%). Most participants (70%) also have a monthly income lower than P50,000. The qualitative analysis revealed that the participants were highly satisfied with their telenutrition consultations and even found telenutrition an acceptable alternative to in-person visits mainly due to its thoroughness, convenience, accessibility, cost, and time efficiency. However, several participants expressed concerns about the need for a doctor’s referral in order to avail of the consultation and the effect of internet stability on the telenutrition consultation. Nonetheless, the high satisfaction with telenutrition driven by the positive experience of the patients outweighs the patient-expressed concerns about internet stability and access barriers associated with the patients’ recent telenutrition consultation
Moving towards sustainable mining communities: The case of the Community-led Non-Cyanide Non-Mercury Cold Extraction Method (CLINN-CEM) in Compostela Valley, Philippines
The small-scale mining industry and communities are left behind in terms of development. They are confronted with economic, environmental, and social problems. Thus, to address these problems and move towards sustainable development, this social development research explores how CLINN-GEM, as a technological innovation, contributes to achieving sustainable mining communities. The researcher employs a single case study approach and adopts qualitative methods in data gathering and analysis. Data gathering methods include document reviews, guided tour, key informant interviews with seven informants, focus group discussions with the operations group and the members of the project staff, and a structured learning exercise with community leaders. The results show that CLINN-GEM technology is a synthesis and systematized articulation of local knowledge on mineral processing that aims to address the adverse impacts of mineral processing using traditional hazardous and low-end technologies in small-scale mining. As a technological innovation, it subscribes to the principles of responsible and sustainable mining, green mining, clean technology, and end-pipe technology. CLINN-GEM brought about several changes in the physical, knowledge, and social realms of small-scale mineral processing. Likewise, use of this technology has resulted in many changes in the economic, social, and environmental conditions of the community. Despite these changes, optimization of CLINN-GEM remains the primary challenge. Therefore, it is recommended that the stakeholders continue research and development efforts to address recovery issues to optimize the technology. Once optimized, policy review and subsequent amendments to the People Small-Scale Mining Act of 1991 and the Implementing Rules and Regulations of Republic Act No. 7076 shall be conducted to institutionalize these reforms
Effects of alginate-based chitosan-starch coating on the physico-chemical properties of guapple (Psidium guajava L. cv. Queso de Bola)
Because of its nutritious qualities and growing demands, an attempt to support the Philippine Guapple Industry was enacted through edible coating. Especially those of starch and chitosan formulation, edible coatings are known to develop low-cost and biocompatible resistance from the drastic changes that commodities experience from their surroundings. Thus, becoming a low-cost technology to prevent yield losses and decrease rate of senescence for selected fruits. With the control treatment as the designated Treatment 1, Treatment 2 Guapples are treated with coating concentrations of 2% Alginate + 0.5% Chitosan, and Treatment 3 Guapples are those that have been treated with 2% Alginate + 0.5% Chitosan + 2% Starch. This setup identifies if the variations of Starch and Chitosan concentrations affect the overall postharvest qualities of Guapples. The physico-chemical parameters were measured through non-destructive and destructive tests, as they relate to the overall process of senescence. Replicated four times in ambient conditions (28 deg C, approx 80% RH), the physico-chemical variables are recorded periodically in a span of one week. It was found that in moisture loss deterrence, the coating from Treatment 2 is the most effective, with significant moisture loss deterrence (vs. Control) found during Day 2. On the other hand, it was found that in preserving the Guapples from Browning, Treatment 3 does it slightly better. No other significant changes were found in terms of other chemical properties of Guapple such as Total Soluble Solids, Titratable Acidity, pH, Firmness, and Ripening Index. Furthermore, the consumer sensory evaluation suggests that they are unable to find any significant preferential difference, except for slight preferences in Visual Quality found in Guapples with Treatment 3. Moving forward, maintaining temperature in the laboratory is recommended as it is determined to be a confounding variable that may have affected results in a warm June climate
Comparative Analysis of the Savings Behavior of Duck Farming Households in Victoria, Laguna Before and During Covid-19 Pandemic, 2019-2020
In the Philippines, duck farming is profitable considering its low input costs and high market prices (Chang, et al, 2003). However, the mobility restrictions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic threatened the duck industry as reflected in the decline in its supply and demand. The duck farmers were challenged to sustain the profitability of the industry which mainly stemmed from the crisis which affected different duck farm operations. There is a perceived need for higher savings during the pandemic as the households\u27 livelihood activities were restricted, affecting their income level. Ultimately, reduced income decreases the savings capacity of the household which consequently serves as threat to their financial stability and security. The study analyzed the savings behavior of the duck farming households in Victoria, Laguna before and during COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 41 duck farming households with 14 backyards raisers, three commercial raisers, 11 processors, and 13 farmer-processors were interviewed regarding their savings behavior and income and expenditure patterns from 2019-2020. To achieve the objectives of the study, descriptive analysis, cost and returns analysis, cash flow budgeting, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Fisher\u27s exact test were used as analytical methods
