    Association of the knowledge, attitudes, and practices on healthy diet and the nutritional status of Senior High School Students in San Pablo City, Laguna

    In the Philippines, there is an increasing prevalence of overnutrition in adolescents and with this comes rising vulnerability to nutrition-related diseases. The WHO stated that a healthy diet can protect individuals against all forms of malnutrition. Thus, this study centers on the association between knowledge, attitudes, and practices on healthy diet and the nutritional status of the senior high school students. A descriptive cross-sectional study design was used in this study. A questionnaire regarding KAP on healthy diet was administered. Self-reported anthropometric measurements were utilized to determine the nutritional status of the students. The KAP were scored, and the average score and weighted means were categorized accordingly. The SPSS software was used to statistically compute the relevant data. The results have shown that 63.04% of the respondents are with good knowledge, 63.60% are with high positive attitudes, and 63.00% are with high positive practices on healthy diet. An association was found between religion and knowledge. Moreover, knowledge is associated with attitudes and the attitudes with practices. However, the study also concludes that the nutritional status of the respondents is independent from their knowledge, attitudes, and practices on healthy diet. Further studies are recommended to know what directly affects the nutritional status of the students

    This study highlights the nutritional value of the world’s smallest edible fish endemic in Bicol Region, sinarapan, Convenience sampling was utilized as sampling method. A cross-sectional survey focused on identifying what nutrients contribute significantly to the recommended energy and nutrient intake (RENI) of the households under study. Additionally, the key informant survey on the in-depth study of their practices and perceptions towards sinarapan as a food commodity was also implemented through a phone interview. Thirty-four households participated in the initial phase of data collection which included their frequencies and methods of acquisition, preparation, and consumption. Only 20 households were able to participate in the second phase which gathered data on their perceptions and practices on the same topic. Based on the statistical analysis of the percent contribution of sinarapan to test for its significant contribution to the household energy and nutrient intake, it was found that sinarapan contributes significantly to the household calorie, protein, iron, calcium, and phosphorus RENI. Moreover, there have been changes in their acquisition, preparation, and consumption practices and perceptions towards sinarapan through the years. For instance, declining water quality in Lake Buhi, advancements in technology, among others have been found to drive changes in the respondents’ preparation and consumption practices

    Tomato and cabbage are the two most widely consumed vegetables in the country. One some occasions, however, the supply of these vegetables runs low. This supply fluctuation may be attributed to excessive rainfall during certain season of the year which is unfavorable to the growth of these vegetables.     Nutritional Evaluation of Hydroponic Corn Fodder and its Effect as Substitute for Feed Concentrates for Buffalo Calves

    This study investigated the effects of hydroponic corn fodder on the growth performance of buffalo calves. Twelve Bulgarian Murrah buffalo calves were divided into two treatment groups: T1, fed with Napier grass and starter feed concentrates, and T2, fed with Napier grass, starter feed concentrates, and hydroponic corn fodder, replacing 50% of the starter feed concentrate. The study found no significant differences between the two groups\u27 average total weight gain and average daily gain. However, the average daily feed intake was significantly higher in T2, possibly due to the tender and young nature of the hydroponic corn fodder. Dry matter and crude protein intake did not show any significant differences between the two groups. The digestibility of nutrients showed a significant difference in dry matter digestibility between T1 and T2. Feed cost per d was significantly lower in T1, but the cost of feed per kg gain was lower in T2. This study suggested that supplementing buffalo calves\u27 diets with hydroponic corn fodder could have a beneficial effect on their growth performance and economic viability. It recommends further research on the use of other grains as fodder for ruminants. Overall, this study highlighted the potential of hydroponic corn production as a sustainable source of fodder for ruminants

    Since the first cases were discovered and lockdowns were implemented, the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on civil society, especially vulnerable populations such as adolescents. The objective of this cross-sectional study is to assess the relationship of the nutritional status of late adolescent (ages 18-24) students of the College of Human Ecology (CHE) in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) with their income level, dietary intake, and physical activity level (PAL) during the COVID-19 pandemic. One hundred eight-two (182) respondents were selected via simple random sampling and were asked to accomplish an online survey questionnaire after filling out an informed consent form. The survey questionnaire was pre-tested to students (ages 18-24) from other colleges in UPLB. The survey questionnaire gathered data from 187 respondents determine monthly family income, PAL using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Short Form (IPAQ-SF), a modified semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to measure the adequacy of energy (kcal) and protein (g) intake, and Body Mass Index (BMI) using the World Health Organization (WHO) classifications. 62.6% had normal BMIs while only 16% were underweight, 15.5% were pre-obese, and 5.9% were classified as pre-obese and greater (i.e. obese class I, II, III). The finding of this study imply that while the likelihood of an adequate intake of calories was linked to participants\u27 nutritional status during the pandemic, PAL, monthly family income, and protein intake were not. It is likely that there are other determinants of adolescent nutritional status during the pandemic aside from the investigated variables. Given the ongoing nature of the pandemic and the paucity of research on adolescent nutrition that might be helpful in public health nutrition interventions, these findings point to the need for further study of the issue

    Application of multi-criteria analysis for the successful implementation of nature-based solution: the case of Victoria, Laguna , Philippines

    This study aims to determine the essential elements needed to successfully implement the Nature-based Solutions (NbS) initiatives in the Municipality of Victoria, Laguna. This would help guide local stakeholders in Victoria toward effective resource management in successfully implementing their proposed NbS initiatives. Findings revealed that the criteria pertaining to an inclusive, transparent, and empowering governance process; net gain to biodiversity and ecosystem integrity; and design informed by scale were the most prevalent themes for the successful implementation of NbS. On the other hand, the readiness of Victoria for its NbS initiatives was determined by the financing, enforcement, and knowledge components. In terms of the factors guiding the implementation of NbS, local stakeholders placed substantial importance on its sustainability and mainstreaming in appropriate contexts, and adaptive management that is evidence-based. Furthermore, it was observed that the NbS initiatives in Victoria are in adherence to the IUCN Global Standard, with biodiversity net-gain and economic feasibility as their strongest areas. Recommended strategies focused on the creation of an assessment mechanism, strengthening of the existing governance structure, IEC campaigns, and the formulation of proposals for other issues faced in the municipality, such as flooding

    Susceptibility of pre-adult biological stages of Mythimna separata (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to three entomopathogenic fungi (Hypocreales))

    Armyworms are polyphagous insect pests of agricultural crops. Their population is usually managed below threshold level using insecticides. However, a single control measure is insufficient to attain a sustainable pest management. Hence, this research was conducted to assess the three species of entomopathogenic fungi as potential biological control agents against Mythimna separata (Walker) or paddy armyworm. Dose mortality assays were conducted to determine the pathogenicity of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill., Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschn.) Sorokin, and Metarhizium rileyi (Farlow) Kepler, S.A. Rehner and Humber against various biological stages of M. separata including egg, 1st to 6th larval instars, prepupa, and pupa. These entomopathogenic fungi did not have ovicidal activity but affected the survivorship of the resulting neonates. Exposure of eggs to B. bassiana, M. anisopliae, and M. rileyi infected 64, 60, and 70% of the resulting neonates, respectively. Adult emergence was also reduced in fungal-treated (29% in B. bassiana, 10% in M. anisopliae, and 10% in M. rileyi) as compared with 64% in control. At 7 d after treatment, M. rileyi applied at 1 x 105 to 1 x 109 conidia/mL was the most pathogenic causing a mean larval mortality of up to 70% as compared to B. bassiana and M. anisopliae with less than 10% mortality. Among the larval instars, the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd were the most susceptible to fungal infection. Conidial concentrations (1 x 108 and 1 x 109 conidia/mL) induced the highest larval mortalities as compared to the lower conidial concentrations (1 x 105 and 1 x 107 conidia/mL) of the entomopathogenic fungi. The prepupal and pupal stages were also slightly susceptible to the entomopathogenic fungi.     Grow-out culture of oyster Magallana bilineata (Röding, 1798) using pouches: A comparison of growth and survival in the river and earthen pond

    Oysters are among the most in-demand aquaculture commodities in the Philippines and worldwide. With the decreasing culture area and the deteriorating water quality of oyster beds, there is a need to explore new culture sites and techniques to address the problems of dwindling stocks and the increasing demand for better quality oysters. This study compared the growth and survival of the oysters Magallana bilineata, the new accepted name of Crassostrea iredalei, cultured in an earthen pond and the river using pouches suspended from rafts. Mean growth rates of oysters in length and weight were significantly higher in those reared in the river (0.56 ± 0.02 cm mo-1; 10.27 ± 0.42 g mo-1) than those in the pond (0.41 ± 0.03 cm mo-1; 5.99 ± 0.22 g mo-1), but the meat yield of oysters reared in the river (25.96 ± 0.92%) was almost the same as in the pond (24.05 ± 1.41%). Likewise, the proximate composition was the same for oysters coming from the river and the pond, respectively — 58.04 ± 0.14% and 53.86 ± 0.38% crude protein, 7.00 ± 0.08% and 7.93 ± 0.38% crude fat, 24.68 ± 0.07% and 28.54 ± 0.74% nitrogen-free extract, and 10.27 ± 0.01% and 9.68 ± 0.01% ash. Oyster survival at harvest was significantly higher in the river (70.21 ± 2.84%) than in the pond (13.10 ± 1.57%). However, with some interventions, ponds may still be utilized for oyster culture despite the low survival results in this study. Extending oyster culture in these aquaculture facilities may serve as a basis for interventions to make the pond more habitable for oysters and may help boost production in the country
