    Youth\u27s role in mangrove conservation: understanding knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions in strengthening commitment to coastal conservation in Barangay Olo-Olo, Lobo, Batangas

    This study assessed the youth\u27s knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions on mangrove conservation and their role in the conservation of the Olo-olo Mangrove Forest and Ecopark. Data were collected through key informant interviews and interview surveys among the youth. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis while quantitative data were analyzed for descriptive and statistical analysis using Spearman correlation. Results showed that the knowledge of the Olo-olo youth has an average mean score of 4.38, which implies that they are knowledgeable about mangroves. Moreover, the attitude of the youth expresses a strong willingness (93%) to participate in conservation efforts. In terms of the perception of the youth, 52% perceived the importance of mangroves and their conservation, and 46% perceived that it is very important. The Spearman correlation test indicates that there was a positive correlation between different variables in terms of the youth\u27s socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions towards mangrove conservation. For instance, effective seminars on mangrove conservation and interest in participation have a weak positive correlation (r.319), significant at p \u3c.001. This analysis emphasizes the importance of promoting motivations that can increase youth involvement in conservation efforts. The role of the youth in conserving the mangrove forest is very important, as they hold significant contributions for future generations

    Background: Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) is a prominent foodborne pathogen globally. As a leading cause of gastrointestinal infections and one of the most prevalent foodborne illnesses, it has become a major public health issue, especially in developing countries. It threatens not only human health but also causes significant economic losses for poultry farmers. Current management of Salmonella-related infections primarily involves supportive care and antibiotics, raising the risk of antimicrobial resistance. This underscores the need for developing cost-effective and efficient alternative treatments for Salmonella-related infections. Methodology: Trypan blue exclusion assay was used to determine the cell viability of duck embryonic fibroblasts (DEFs) on different concentrations of Philippine berry fruit extract (BFE). The study was divided into four experimental groups, each with two replicates: negative control/cultured DEFs (NC), DEFs stimulated with BFE (BFE), S. Typhimurium-stimulated DEFs (ST), and the S. Typhimurium-stimulated and BFE-treated DEFS (ST+BFE). At 24 h post-stimulation/treatment, mRNA expression levels of Thl-related cytokines (IFN-v, IL-2, and IL-22) were assessed using quantitative reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Results: The highest concentration of BFE was found to be at 250 g/mL with 95.05% cell viability. This concentration was used in all succeeding experimental procedures in this study. Significant upregulation of IFN-γ, IL-2, and IL-22 cytokines in DEFs stimulated with ST only were observed. Significant downregulation of IFN-y and IL-22 gene expression levels on ST+BFE as compared to ST after BFE treatment for 24 h were also observed. Interestingly, even without pathogen stimulation, IL-2 levels in BFE-treated DEFs were significantly upregulated Conclusion: Results revealed that treatment with BFE led to a decrease in the expression levels of IFN-γ (Th1) and IL-22 (Th17), suggesting the potential role of the Th1/Th17 pathway in regulating inflammatory responses triggered by S. Typhimurium infections. Conversely, the upregulation of IL-2 (Th1) was linked to the intricate immunoregulatory functions of cytokines, which contribute to anti-inflammatory effects, hinting at the possible involvement of the Th2 signaling pathway. Hence, BFE demonstrated promise as an anti-inflammatory agent and inflammatory modulator, offering potential as an alternative treatment for ST-related infections.     Background: Autologous serum, naturally enriched with growth factors, vitamins, and immunoglobulins, is a known alternative to artificial tears for treating ocular surface injuries. Such is derived from a patient\u27s own blood. Its efficacy extends beyond lubrication offering potential benefits in enhancing wound healing, and post-operative care. Although it shares a composition similar to natural tears and contains essential wound healing factors, its potential for treating skin wounds has not been extensively studied. This study aims to see if it could be a useful alternative to current treatments, like mupirocin ointment. Methods: Six apparently healthy, adult female, non-descript, dogs for ovariohysterectomy were used for the study. All dogs had two incisions (one from the surgical procedure), one treated with autologous serum, and the other treated with mupirocin ointment. The dogs were divided into two collection days, day 7 and day 14, to elucidate on the macroscopic and microscopic changes in wound healing. Results: There is no sufficient evidence to say that the scores for both macroscopic and microscopic examinations are different between the two treatments. Both also proved to show more desired wound healing responses, mitigating observed exacerbations in excessive healing. Conclusion: The results strongly suggest the efficacy of autologous serum as an effective alternative in accelerating the skin wound healing process

    Effects of Calcium Pidolate Feed Premix Supplementation on Laying Productivity and Eggsehell Quality of 70-week-old Dekalb White Layer Hens

    This study aimed to investigate the effects of calcium pidolate supplementation on the laying productivity and eggshell quality of 70-week-old layer hens. The objective was to assess its potential as a replacement for other calcium sources due to its high absorption rate of 95%, regardless of gut pH conditions. The experiment involved 2,000 Dekalb White layer hens divided into control and treatment groups. The treatment group received a premix powder form of calcium pidolate at a concentration of 96.90% in addition to their basal diet. The study utilized a completely randomized design, with each group comprising 1,000 hens distributed across 250 replicates. Contrary to the positive benefits of calcium pidolate based on previous studies, the findings of this study revealed unexpected negative outcomes in the treatment group. The treatment group exhibited lower hen-day and hen-housed egg production, a higher feed conversion ratio, an increased percentage of defective eggs, reduced eggshell thickness, and lower profit with higher expenses compared to the control group throughout the entire duration of the experiment. Meanwhile, the control group, adhering to the basal diet with 4.53% calcium, showed better results than the treatment group throughout the 9-week trial period. These results indicate that the higher concentration of calcium pidolate, without adjusting the overall calcium content in the diet, may have led to an imbalance, contributing to the observed adverse effects. In conclusion, this study challenges previous findings on the positive effects of calcium pidolate supplementation. The unexpected outcomes emphasize the critical importance of carefully balancing calcium levels in layer diets, particularly considering the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio. The study recommends further research to validate and elaborate on the effects of calcium pidolate supplementation, taking into account specific conditions and stages of the production cycle. Adjusting the calcium content in the diet to achieve a balanced nutritional profile before supplementing with calcium pidolate is crucial. Additionally, exploring the influence of environmental factors and varying concentrations of calcium pidolate can provide insights into optimizing its effectiveness in layer hen diets. Lastly, conducting necropsies on the mortalities from the control and treatment groups is recommended to confirm and assess the probable cause of death and a possible association with hypercalcemia or the suspected calcium-to-phosphorus imbalance with an excess of calcium. The unexpected results emphasized the complexity of calcium\u27s effects on layer hens and the necessity for comprehensive research to optimize the benefits of calcium pidolate supplementation without unintended consequences

    Academic stress among high school students is a prevalent issue with significant implications for their overall well-being and academic performance. However, the specific effects of academic stress on students\u27 meal quality remain underexplored. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating the impact of academic stress on the meal quality of senior high school students. The primary objective is to examine how academic stress influences the dietary habits of these students, providing insights into their eating behaviors and identifying potential areas for intervention and support. A qualitative and quantitative approach was employed, utilizing both interviews and surveys. To gain a deeper understanding, qualitative data were obtained via interviews. focusing on students\u27 experiences and perceptions regarding the relationship between academic stress and meal quality. Quantitative data on students\u27 perceived academic stress levels and meal quality were collected through surveys. Participant confidentiality was a comfortable environment was created to facilitate open and honest ensured, and responses. Surveys were administered face-to-face and online, while interviews were conducted privately in school settings. Findings revealed that a substantial portion of senior high school students reported moderate to high levels of academic stress, significantly affecting their meal quality. Students experiencing higher stress levels tended to exhibit irregular eating patte such as skipping meals or consuming convenient but nutritionally deficient food. Qualitative data highlighted the emotional and psy chol ogical factors influencing students\u27 food choices and eating behaviors under academic stress. In conclusion, the study shows the necessity for comprehensive support systems and interventions addressing the interplay between academic stress and dietary habits. It emphasizes the importan ce of considering students\u27 holistic well-being, including healthy eating habits, alongside their academic responsibilities. The findings suggest that interventions focusing on stress management, nutrition education, and accessible healthy food options within schools could greatly benefit students. This research holds significance for school administrators, educators, and health professionals, highlighting the need to promote healthy meal choices and effective stress-coping mechanisms among high school students. The study also reveals the emotional and psychol ogi cal dimensions of how academic stress impacts eating behaviors, underscoring the multifaceted nature of this issue and the requirement for tailored interventions

    Financial Literacy lacked research that defined the demographics in relation to populations situated in the Philippines. Moreover, several studies have shown the observed decline in the financial literacy amongst individuals throughout the years. Therefore, it has been established that financial literacy is an essential field that should be studied to avoid concurring with this negative trend in financial literacy. The objectives of this study is to The purpose of this study is to determine the demographic factors that are impactful to the variables of financial literacy of senior high school students in UPRHS: to categorize the demographics of senior high school students in UPRHS; to quantify the variables of financial literacy of senior high school students in UPRHS in terms of (1) financial landscape, (2) planning and managing of finances, (3) money and transactions, (4) financial attitude, and (5) financial behavior, and to analyze the demographics of relation to the variables of financial literacy of senior high school students in UPRHS. This field was approached through quantitative means and analyzed accordingly through parametric and non-parametric means. Findings show that only sex, strand, and club membership were significant variables to some of the financial literacy variables in the study. With relation to this study\u27s findings, it thereby concludes that choosinga strand and being a club member should not be ignored by students in establishing a better foundation in financial literacy

    Waste management remains a significant global issue, with improper disposal and insufficient infrastructure exacerbating environmental and health concerns. Based on the National Solid Waste Management Status Report 2018, the Philippines generates around 21.4 million tons of waste annually, yet only 12 milli on tons are collected and managed appropriately. Given the magnitude of this challenge, the strategic placement of waste bins assumes critical importance in optimizing waste collection and reducing environmental impact. Despite this pressing need, there is a notable gap in the research literature regarding waste bin placement, especially within the Philippine context. This capstone project aimed to address this gap by optimizing waste bin configurations in Brgy. Paciano Rizal in Bay, Laguna. The aerial view image of the target area was converted into a 75x50 grid to facilitate convenient input and analysis. The process involved using a modified version of the Breadth-First Search (BFS) algorithm, which is the Multiple BFS algorithm. The program ran several BFS algorithms simultaneously from different starting points to find the optimal placement of waste bins. The objective was to reduce the distance residents need to walk to reach the waste bins, thereby enhancing accessibility and convenience
