Sports greatly impact the present by creating jobs, boosting tourism, and inspiring future athletes. However, managing sports is very hard and taxing. This is where management teams come in; they handle athletes\u27 schedules, competitions, finances, and needs. The sport management in the Philippines, although with trained management staff, is not immune to issues and may occasionally experience challenges because of the lack of external support. This study aimed to examine the support and treatment of the players and their management teams. Knowing sports management at a university seeks to understand the broader sports situation in the Philippines. The general objective of this study is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of the current management of the competing varsity players of the UP Los Banos. This study used a qualitative phenomenological approach. Participants included three members each from the UPLB\u27s Women\u27s Basketball, Volleyball, and Futsal Varsity teams, and one coaching staff member for each team, selected through snowball sampling. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted online or face-to-face; they were given the right to be interviewed through appointment at their chosen time. The collected data were analyzed using thematic analysis to draw conclusions. The data gathered were analyzed and recurring codes and patterns were observed and taken into account. These codes were categorized into five themes. namely: skills through background and experience, skills improvement through training, good relationship with coaching management, consistent training system, and improved performance in games and tournaments. It was concluded that there are so many factors that affect the performance of student-athletes and one of them is the effectiveness of their coaching management in improving their skills inside and outside the court

The eating habits of teenagers are affected by various factors, which can lead to their different vicws on their food intake. The influence of their surroundings or environment can contribute to their changing eating habits such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Food literacy and health awareness are crucial to their daily consumption of foods since these can have an impact on their health. For this reason, this research aims to assess the eating behavior of students and determine its impact on their food decisions. In addition, this project involved the development and evaluation of a healthy food snack made from tofu aimed at helping improve nutrition among the targeted participants. To achieve the objectives of this research, it followed the food product development process involving ideation for recipe development, product testing, modification, and consumer testing through sensory test. Additionally, a researcher-made survey consists of likert-scale questions administered to the 30 consenting participants via convenient sampling method. Data gathered were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, using an open-access software, Jamovi. Results showed that participants generally practice healthy and acceptable eating behaviors such as consuming nutritious meals. preferring home-cooked over fast food meals, including meat, vegetables, and fruits in their diet, and avoiding too salty, too sweet, and too fatty food as much as possible. It is important to note, however, that some unhealthy habits students noted include skipping breakfast, not checking or minding the nutritive and caloric contents of the food that they consume. With regards to the tofu nuggets, most students gave a high rating for its flavor (3.2/4), texture (3.3/4), aroma (3.2/4), and overall appearance (3.6/4). Their positive responses mainly revolved around their perceived healthiness of the tofu nuggets. Based on the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the, the developed tofu nuggets falls within the recommended energy intake among teens of 2700 kcal for males and 2170 for females, having a calculated 191 kcal per 100g serving, making it a healthy alternative snack to commercially available chicken nuggets

In another universe, I would have loved political campaigning with you : a collective of flash fiction on the active participation of non-voting youth in the 2022 Philippine Presidential Elections

Youth participation is something that should be warmly welcomed in the field of politics There is a catch, however, because people would hyperfocus on the \u27youth\u27 part of this term instead of what it really is, belittling teenagers for their advocacies that should be treated as advocacies nonetheless. This was particularly evident during the Philippine 2022 National Elections The presence of nonvoters in campaigning spaces were felt, although it may be difficult to understand why they feel the need to do this. This Capstone project is a collection of fl ash fiction stories that aims to tell the readers that the youth are perfectly capable of fighting for the future of their country These flash fiction pieces encapsulate the essence of the stories shared to us by young people who were nonvoters during the election period but still chose to actively campaign and participate. Rather than an explicit, fictionalized version of their true stories, these flash fiction stories will be built on the common grounds these participants have, be it their ways of campaigning or their motivations. The medium of flash fiction was chosen because we are aiming for this project to reach the audience in such a way that there will be a balance of entertainment and musing, piecing together that these fictional stories mirror real life. Common themes that will be encountered in these pieces are the same themes present in the stories our participants have shared with us. The youth and the arts will always play a huge role in politics, and this project hopes to serve as a bridge of understanding as to why this is

Feeding Behavior of Sweet Potato Weevil, Cylas formicarius (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Brentidae) on Three Sweet Potato, Ipomoea batatas L. Cultivars Grown in Tarlac, Philippines

    Get PDF
Sweet potato is grown in tropical countries for its edible tubers, which have become an essential food source. It is usually propagated through vine-cutting, which can be obtained from harvested plants or nurseries intended for cutting production only. The recurrent use of vines may cause increased weevil infestation. The crop is known to be infested with insect pests. More importantly, the sweet potato weevil, Cylas formicarius, targets the tubers, thus, causing the economic losses. Sweet potato farmers in Tarlac claim that only one sweet potato cultivar is being attacked by C. formicarius, however, it was found in this experiment that the feeding and feeding behavior of the weevil were not affected by the cultivar provided, such that there is no significant differences observed in the average amount of tubers consumed by both male and female feeding time and degree of damage

The diversity of 148 greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.) accessions from the collections of the National Plant Genetics Resources Laboratory (NPGRL), Visayas State University (VSU), and the Institute of Crop Science - University of the Philippines Los Baños (ICROPS-UPLB) was evaluated using 54 Dioscorea-based SSR markers. Out of 54 SSR markers, polymorphic bands were amplified in 50 SSR markers with Polymorphic Information Content (PIC) values ranging from 0.65 to 0.89. Subsequent cluster analysis generated nine distinct clusters with a Jaccard’s distance index of 0.85, implying 85% dissimilarity among the greater yam accessions. Each formed cluster from the analysis comprised a varying number of accessions: Cluster I with three, Cluster II with 24, Cluster III with 15, Cluster IV with 31, Cluster V with two, Cluster VI with four, Cluster VII with 11, Cluster VIII with 27, and Cluster IX with 31 accessions. Based on the multiscale bootstrap with 5000 times resampling, the approximately unbiased (AU) p \u3e 0.95 was generated at Clusters II, IV, VIII, and IX with a 0.05 level of confidence. Consequently, high dissimilarity rates obtained from the molecular analysis of 148 greater yam accessions revealed high genetic diversity. Thus, eight greater yam accessions comprising PHL 33537, LA 068B, PHL 33550, PHL 31889, LA 110, LA147, TABACO, and LA 597 were potential parents for future breeding programs. Moreover, the information obtained could be essential in various greater yam improvement programs and genetic resource conservation measures

    No full text
The study aims to examine the effects of economic and political indicators on the brain drain in Asia-Pacific using panel data from 2007 to 2022. The results reveal that among the economic indicators, unemployment and human development index have influences on brain drain. Unemployment positively affects the brain drain in Asia-Pacific particularly in North and Central Asia, and South East Asia, whereas human development index negatively influences brain drain on all regions except South East Asia. Additionally, political stability index has an inconsistent effect on brain drain. For instance, in South East Asia, political stability has a negative effect on brain drain, but positive on East and North East Asia, and the Pacific. The findings in the study can be utilized to design policies in mitigating brain drain in the Asia-Pacific region and subregions, specifically focusing on the indicators that affect it, such as unemployment, human development, and political stability. Specifically, such policies can aim to offer unemployment benefits and social insurance; develop infrastructure and facilities that enhance social welfare; and stabilize political conditions that can ensure the skilled workers\u27 safety and protection

Value Chain Analysis of Ylang-Ylang (Canaga odorata) Essential Oil in Anao, Tarlac, 2024

    No full text
This study aimed to evaluate the value chain of ylang-ylang flower and essential oil products in Anao, Tarlac, focusing on identifying key actors, their roles, and practices, as well as assessing the profitability and efficiency of production, processing, and marketing. The value chain was divided into three stages: flower harvesting, essential oil extraction, and manufacturing of secondary products. Primary data were collected through a semi-structured interview process with 23 value chain key actors (17 flower pickers, one essential oil processor, two retailers, and four various manufacturers of ylang-ylang products such as perfumes, candles, car fresheners, and distilled oil). Descriptive analysis, profitability analysis, and marketing efficiency analysis were employed to evaluate the value chain. The pickers\u27 procedure involved harvesting and delivering flowers to the Ylang- ylang Center for sorting and distillation. The study found that between April 2023 and April 2024, 1,192 kilograms of flowers were sold to the local processing facility, yielding 7,150 milliliters of essential oil. Product and geographical flow analyses illustrated direct consumer purchases, retail sales, and supply to secondary product manufacturers from Anao to several areas in Luzon. On the other hand, profitability analysis revealed that all key actors in the value chain were profitable, with flower pickers receiving the lowest return on investment due to relatively high implicit costs. The processor, manufacturers, and retailers, however, showed significant positive returns surpassing the opportunity cost of capital investment, with manufacturers adding the most value. The candle manufacturer earned the highest value-added share, followed by car freshener, distilled oil, and perfume manufacturers. Inefficiencies particularly existed in the distribution of returns and technical operations. Marketing margins revealed disparities, with pickers receiving minimal shares and manufacturers the highest, and the assessment of the breakdown of consumer’s peso indicated that flower pickers received the smallest share of consumer spending, suggesting inefficiencies in the value chain. Technical efficiency analysis exposed a five percent CAP value, which implied inefficiency and underutilization of the processing facility, indicating room for improvement. In conclusion, the ylang-ylang value chain in Anao, despite the inefficiencies in certain stages, exhibited profitability among key actors, with manufacturers reaping the most benefits. Key challenges identified included a lack of blooming trees, insufficient training for pickers, overharvesting, low farmer engagement, inconsistent processing methods, lack of competitive pricing strategies, and difficulties in promoting ylang-ylang products. Recommendations to address these challenges, like the provision of appropriate training programs for flower pickers and the employment of new pricing and marketing strategies, could enhance the sustainability and competitiveness of the ylang-ylang essential oil industry and improve the value chain\u27s overall efficiency and the value chain key actors’ profitability
