    On the non-homogeneity of expletive negation in Greek and beyond

    Data de publicació electrònica: 04-04-2025Expletive negative markers, i.e., negative markers that do not reverse the truth conditions of the sentence in which they occur, have been reported to appear in a wide array of languages and in a fairly large set of syntactic environments. Previous research has shown that expletive negation is a non-homogeneous phenomenon. Focusing on Greek, I motivate two general claims related to this non-homogeneity: (i) Greek expletive negation hosts can be classified into two linguistically relevant groups, depending on whether they feature the standard negative marker dhen or the modal negative marker min. (ii) The semantic contribution of the expletive occurrences of dhen and min retains at least parts of the meaning of their respective non-expletive counterparts. After presenting some first evidence that the dichotomy of expletive negation hosts motivated by the Greek data extends to other languages, I submit the following hypothesis as a novel promising perspective in the study of expletive negation cross-linguistically: The bi-partite distinction between dhen-expletive negation hosts and min-expletive negation hosts may be cross-linguistically valid, suggesting that expletive negation hosts across languages are divided into two classes: (a) a class of expletive negation licensors that obscure the truly negative semantics of the featured negative markers, and (b) a class of modal expletive negation licensors that feature expletive negative markers corresponding to the spell-out of modal or deontic ordering sources.I would like to thank M.Teresa Espinal, the audience of the GLiF research group seminars at Pompeu Fabra University, as well as the audience of the Sentential Negation Across the Globe workshop for valuable feedback on parts of the research presented here.     Identifying most important predictors for suicidal thoughts and behaviours among healthcare workers active during the Spain COVID-19 pandemic: a machine-learning approach

    Aims: Studies conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic found high occurrence of suicidal thoughts and behaviours (STBs) among healthcare workers (HCWs). The current study aimed to (1) develop a machine learning-based prediction model for future STBs using data from a large prospective cohort of Spanish HCWs and (2) identify the most important variables in terms of contribution to the model's predictive accuracy. Methods: This is a prospective, multicentre cohort study of Spanish HCWs active during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 8,996 HCWs participated in the web-based baseline survey (May-July 2020) and 4,809 in the 4-month follow-up survey. A total of 219 predictor variables were derived from the baseline survey. The outcome variable was any STB at the 4-month follow-up. Variable selection was done using an L1 regularized linear Support Vector Classifier (SVC). A random forest model with 5-fold cross-validation was developed, in which the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and undersampling of the majority class balancing techniques were tested. The model was evaluated by the area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic (AUROC) curve and the area under the precision-recall curve. Shapley's additive explanatory values (SHAP values) were used to evaluate the overall contribution of each variable to the prediction of future STBs. Results were obtained separately by gender. Results: The prevalence of STBs in HCWs at the 4-month follow-up was 7.9% (women = 7.8%, men = 8.2%). Thirty-four variables were selected by the L1 regularized linear SVC. The best results were obtained without data balancing techniques: AUROC = 0.87 (0.86 for women and 0.87 for men) and area under the precision-recall curve = 0.50 (0.55 for women and 0.45 for men). Based on SHAP values, the most important baseline predictors for any STB at the 4-month follow-up were the presence of passive suicidal ideation, the number of days in the past 30 days with passive or active suicidal ideation, the number of days in the past 30 days with binge eating episodes, the number of panic attacks (women only) and the frequency of intrusive thoughts (men only). Conclusions: Machine learning-based prediction models for STBs in HCWs during the COVID-19 pandemic trained on web-based survey data present high discrimination and classification capacity. Future clinical implementations of this model could enable the early detection of HCWs at the highest risk for developing adverse mental health outcomes. Study registration: NCT04556565

    Outdoor air pollution, road traffic noise, and allostatic load in children aged 6-11 years: evidence from six European cohorts

    Emerging evidence suggests that exposure to air pollutants and road traffic noise triggers stress responses, which mediate physiological responses in multiple organs and tissues. However, epidemiological study in children is sparse. We aimed to evaluate whether outdoor air pollution and road traffic noise are associated with physiological response measured by allostatic load in children. We studied 919 children aged 6-11 years from the HELIX (Human Early Life Exposome) cohort in 6 European countries with 19 biomarkers assessed in four physiological systems-cardiovascular, metabolic, immune/inflammation, and neuroendocrine systems. We then calculated both count-based and continuous scores for each physiological system and generated allostatic load scores (range 0-19). Exposure to air pollution (NO2, PM2.5, PM10, PM2.5absorbance) and road traffic noise (LDEN) based on participants' home, school, and commuting route addresses were estimated for the year prior to outcome assessment. Higher exposure to all air pollutants was associated with a higher allostatic load, although only the association of PM10 survived correction for multiple testing (for count-based allostatic load score: RR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.08, 1.48; for continuous allostatic load score: β = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.27-0.84, per each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM10). Examining physiological systems separately, higher exposure to air pollution was mainly associated with higher allostatic load in the immune/inflammatory and metabolic systems. No associations between road traffic noise and allostatic load were observed. Our findings suggest that air pollution act as a chronic stressor in manifesting multi-systemic physiological dysregulation in childhood, which may be a precursor of air pollution-related diseases.This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 874583, Advancing Tools for Human Early Lifecourse Exposome research and Translation (ATHLETE).     TANGO2 is an acyl-CoA binding protein

    Loss of TANGO2 in humans precipitates metabolic crises during periods of heightened energy demand, such as fasting, infections, or high fever. TANGO2 has been implicated in various functions, including lipid metabolism and heme transport, and its cellular localization remains uncertain. In our study, we demonstrate that TANGO2 localizes to the mitochondrial lumen via a structural region containing LIL residues. Mutations in these LIL residues cause TANGO2 to relocate to the periphery of lipid droplets. We further show that purified TANGO2 binds acyl-coenzyme A, and mutations in the highly conserved NRDE sequence of TANGO2 inhibit this binding. Collectively, our findings suggest that TANGO2 serves as an acyl-coenzyme A binding protein. These insights may provide new avenues for addressing the severe cardiomyopathies and rhabdomyolysis associated with defective TANGO2 in humans

    When immigrant and regional minority languages coexist: linguistic authority and integration in multilingual linguistic acculturation

    This study explores integration and linguistic acculturation in Catalonia (Spain), a multilingual setting where a state and a regional language coexist with those of immigration. Using qualitative content analysis, we examined the linguistic acculturation profiles of 13 high-school students of immigrant background and the linguistic acculturation expectations of 15 autochthonous students, considering Spanish, Catalan and heritage languages. Then, we explored their understanding of what integration means and its relation to language. Public use of heritage languages was the main source of friction. Participants of immigrant origin with assimilation profiles only used heritage languages with family, while those in multilingual profiles also used them in the public domain. Autochthonous students condemned their use in public, although they supported their use at home. Students from immigrant backgrounds advocated for a more inclusive understanding of integration, particularly those in multilingual profiles, but autochthonous students equated integration to assimilation.     New insights into the clinical utility of LMO2

    This thesis offers novel information on the clinical utility of LMO2, shown in three different studies. In the first one, we generated a round-robin testing validating the interobserver and interlaboratory reproducibility of LMO2. In the second, we assessed LMO2 mRNA expression by chromogenic in situ hybridization (CISH) in normal tissue and in a series of agressive large B-cell lymphomas (aLBCL). Normal tonsil tissue showed high levels of LMO2 mRNA in the light zone of the germinal center and low levels of LMO2 in MYC-R aLBCL cases. In the third study, we asked whether the combined profile of CD10/LMO2/MYC is useful to detect MYC-R, improving LMO2 and MYC individual results. A scoring system and algorithm were generated and both associated with the presence of MYC-R. In conclusion, these findings place LMO2 as a useful and reproducible marker to screen MYC-R, especially by combining CD10/LMO2/MYC markers. Moreover, LMO2 mRNA expression by CISH, captures many of the reported biologic features of LMO2, offering a reasonable explanation for the downregulation of LMO2 in MYC-R aLBCL.Esta tesis ofrece información novedosa sobre la utilidad clínica del LMO2, demostrada en tres estudios diferentes. En el primero, generamos un test de reproducibilidad validando la utilidad clínica del LMO2 entre hematopatólogos de distintos laboratorios. En el segundo, evaluamos la expresión de ARNm de LMO2 mediante hibridación in situ cromogénica (CISH) en tejido normal y en una serie de aLBCL. El tejido normal de amígdala ha mostrado altos niveles de LMO2 en la zona clara del centro germinal y niveles bajos de LMO2 en casos de linfomas agresivos de célula grande B (aLBCL) con MYC-R. En el tercer trabajo, nos preguntamos si el perfil combinado de CD10/LMO2/MYC es útil para detectar MYC-R, mejorando los resultados individuales de LMO2 y MYC. Se generó un score y un algoritmo, ambos asociados con la presencia de MYC-R. En conclusión, estos hallazgos sitúan a LMO2 como un marcador útil y reproducible para detectar MYC-R, especialmente mediante la combinación de marcadores CD10/LMO2/MYC. Además, la expresión de ARNm de LMO2 por CISH captura muchas de las características biológicas informadas de LMO2, lo que ofrece una explicación razonable para la regulación negativa del LMO2 en los aLBCL que presentan MYC-R.Programa de Doctorat en Biomedicin

    Narrating crises of Europe’s southernmost borderscapes: the case of Melilla and Lampedusa

    This paper presents the qualitative content analysis of claims in mainstream media made around crises related to immigration at specific borderscapes of the European Union located in two Southern European Member States, namely Italy and Spain. The two selected border crisis cases are the tragic shipwreck of Lampedusa, which occurred on the 3rd of October 2013, and the Melilla massacre, which occurred on the 24th of June 2022. I argue that both events were pivotal in shaping the view (local, national and international) on these borders given their broader mediatic reach, which gave these borderlands unprecedented attention, despite being only two of the numerous tragedies that took place on the Central and Western Mediterranean migratory routes since the early 2000s. The aim of the analysis is thus to compare claims made in the media around the mentioned events on these specific borderscapes, peculiar areas shaped by transnational flows that have existed and developed beyond the constructed idea of the national state and its clear-cut borders. Indeed, I argue that what happens on these borderscapes and its consequential media representation profoundly shapes the way we think about these territories, migration flows, and migrants at the national and European levels. The aim is thus to detect potential similarities and differences in how these events are narrated through claims made in the media. These claims and their comparative analysis give us an idea of how these events and these territories are perceived in the two member states and then translated at the European level

    Machine learning and Wi-Fi: unveiling the path toward AI/ML-Native IEEE 802.11 networks

    Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are nowadays mature technologies considered essential for driving the evolution of future communications systems. Simultaneously, Wi-Fi technology has constantly evolved over the past three decades and incorporated new features generation after generation, thus gaining in complexity. As such, researchers have observed that AI/ML functionalities may be required to address the upcoming Wi-Fi challenges that will be otherwise difficult to solve with traditional approaches. This article discusses the role of AI/ML in current and future Wi-Fi networks, and depicts the ways forward. A roadmap toward AI/ML-native Wi-Fi, key challenges, standardization efforts, and major enablers are also discussed.     The asylum seekers in non-metropolitan areas in France: between temporary integration and leading to autonomy. The case of the Ambertois territory

    This article focuses on the integration process of people seeking asylum in non-metropolitan areas in France. It conceptualizes the reception of asylum seekers involving two interrelated approaches: the utilitarian approach and the humanitarian approach. This article is based on surveys, participatory and sensitive cartography, and participant observation conducted in the Ambertois territory between 2017 and 2018. I find the Ambertois territory can be considered a "fragile space," particularly in terms of demographics, with difficulties in maintaining public services. These difficulties are risks for asylum seekers, and are impacting the urban space. These risks are intensified by the national and regional level policies like the recent reform of the asylum and immigration act on the one hand, and the suffering they experienced throughout their migratory journey on the other. Faced with these risks, local synergies, which facilitate the integration of asylum seekers, are emerging from local actors. This integration is temporary and is considered by local actors as leading to the autonomy of asylum seekers
