    Business cycles with pricing cascades

    No full text
Business cycles with pronounced inflation can have sectoral origins and often feature a growing share of price-adjusting firms. Rationalizing such phenomena requires enhancing our modeling toolkit. We do that by building a non-linear equilibrium multi-sector framework featuring a general input-output network and optimal decisions on the timing and size of price adjustments. The interaction of our ingredients creates equilibrium cascades: large movements in aggregates trigger price adjustment decisions on the extensive margin. Following demand shocks, such as monetary interventions, networks dampen cascades, thus slowing down price adjustment decisions and giving central banks substantial power to stimulate the real economy with limited inflationary consequences. In contrast, under supply shocks, networks amplify cascades, leading to fast increases in the frequency of repricing and large inflationary swings. Applied to Euro Area data, the interaction of networks with cascades allows to quantitatively match the surges in inflation and repricing frequency in the post-Covid era

PET in preclinical AD: image harmonization, characterization of the centiloid metric of Aβ load and associations with tau fluid biomarkers

    No full text
This thesis explores technical factors influencing brain PET quantification, developing brain PET harmonization framework, assessing Centiloid robustness as a clinical biomarker, and evaluating the associations between fluid biomarkers and amyloid and tau PET imaging in the early stage of preclinical AD. Findings support prospective and retrospective harmonization using the developed framework, soon to be EARL accreditation's new harmonization criteria for brain PET imaging. Centiloid metric showed to be a robust metric, that can be used as a reliable biomarker. Additionally, promising results from CSF and blood biomarker studies, notably new blood biomarkers (blood ptau231 and ptau217), revealed their predictive abilities of for amyloid progression and moderate correlations with tau PET signals. This underscores their potential as valuable tools for cohort enrichment and recruitment of clinical trials.

    No full text
The translation of comics and, in particular, the translation of humour in this type of text is a fascinating field within translation studies due to the infinite didactic possibilities it offers. Although the mixture of linguistic, cultural and visual elements justifies its study and practice, this field often remains in the background and is not given enough attention. For this reason, the aim of this work is to raise awareness of the difficulties involved in translating a text of these characteristics, especially with regard to translating humour between different languages and cultures. On the basis of a theoretical approach to humour, its typologies, and the translation strategies applied to comics, the translation into French of some fragments of an emblematic comic from our country is carried out. The analysis of the practice carried out makes it possible to highlight the cultural variations that limit the reception of humour by different audiences and the choices that the translator must make in order to preserve the original comic intention. Finally, it is concluded that the translator’s task is not only to transfer a text from one language to another, but sometimes also involves a cultural and creative adaptation of the original

Bullying in Spanish high schools: intersection of gender and immigrant background

    No full text
Based on the data from PISA 2018, the study investigates the relationship between gender and immigration status on exposure and attitudes towards bullying and students' perception of teachers' intercultural attitudes in Spanish high schools. While boys and first-generation immigrants experience significantly more bullying, girls and students without immigration background showed overall stronger negative attitudes towards bullying. Finally, boys and children with an immigration background perceived higher degrees of teachers' cultural biases. These findings provide new insights into the importance of addressing gender and ethnic biases in anti-bullying programmes

Socioecological correlates of parental lifestyle patterns during the antenatal period

    No full text
Background: This study aimed to explore socioecological correlates of parental lifestyle patterns during pregnancy, an overlooked topic except for individual socioeconomic factors. Methods: We used data from three European mother-offspring cohorts participating in the EndObesity Consortium [EDEN, France, n = 1,962; Generation R, the Netherlands, n = 8,765; and Lifeways, Ireland, n = 932]. In previous principal component analysis, we identified two separate parental lifestyle patterns in pregnancy, characterised by: 1) "high parental smoking, poor-quality maternal diet, and low physical activity"; and 2) "low parental body mass index (BMI) and high gestational weight gain (GWG)". Applying the socioecological model, we conducted multivariable linear regression analyses on lifestyle pattern scores (outcomes), first including parental socioeconomic and sociodemographic characteristics (block 1), then the urban environment (block 2), and finally psychosocial factors and health-care access (block 3). Results: Older parents, those born abroad, or with high SEP had lower scores for the first lifestyle pattern. Conversely, multiparous mothers, those with suboptimal health insurance coverage, or who did not attend parenting preparation sessions followed that pattern more closely. Multiparous mothers, parents with a low SEP, or living in highly deprived areas had lower scores on the second pattern, contrary to those exposed to high population density or living in a neighbourhood with high facility richness. Conclusions: Higher SEP, a foreign birthplace, wealthier neighbourhoods, and attendance at antenatal parenting preparation sessions were associated with healthier parental lifestyles during pregnancy. These potential facilitators should be considered for inclusion in tailored family-based health promotion interventions during the perinatal period.Entire consortium: The authors acknowledge all investigators working on the EndObesity Project and are grateful to all the families in the participating cohorts. We used variables that were harmonised and generated in the framework of the H2020 LifeCycle project. The LifeCycle project received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Grant Agreement No. 733206 LifeCycle). This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the ERA-NET Cofund action (N° 727565), European Joint Programming Initiative “A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life” (JPI HDHL, EndObesity)

Inhospitalidad, colonialismo y género en Over the Pyrenees into Spain de Mary Eyre

    No full text
This article analyses the representation of Spain as an inhospitable country in Mary Eyre's Over the Pyrenees into Spain, a bitter narrative of the solitary journey that this neglected Victorian writer pursued across parts of the Peninsula during the summer of 1865. Drawing on diverse approaches to hospitality and inhospitality, I will argue that Eyre chose to purposely build a negative image of Spain by blending the two main ideologies that, according to Sara Mills, influenced Victorian women's travel books, namely, the discourse of colonialism and the discourse of gender. Eyre, who during her journey was harassed and insulted by her triple status of woman, foreigner and solo traveller, used her narrative to ultimately take revenge and describe the country in a way no other Victorian travellers had done before

Integrating historical cartography, written accounts and satellite images for the reconstruction of past landscapes: the case of Madayi (Kerala, India)

    No full text
Comunicació presentada a 1st TIR-FOR Symposium: from territory studies to digital cartography, celebrat de manera virtual els dies 26 i 27 d’octubre de 2020.The coastline of southern India has historically been a central node within an important commercial network that brought the West (and the Mediterranean) into contact with the Far East. After the fall of the Roman Empire, other commercial actors came into play and Arab and Jewish merchants began to travel the ‘Western’ routes, as attested by written sources at least starting from the 9th century AD. In this context, archaeological surveys conducted in Madayipara (Kannur District, Kerala) have unearthed evidence of a complex network of settlements in the delta of the Kuppam River in Taliparamba which has almost disappeared today. The natural landscape has also changed over time, as the coastline slowly advanced and rivers changed their courses as well as their function. Traces of this hub or entrepôt can be found in the rich body of historical sources and cartography of the region, which suggests the presence of lively ports often associated with Jewish and Muslim communities, as well as in later maps drawn by European explorers. The historical sources, together with satellite imagery and results from archaeological surveys, can help us reconstruct a complex settlement pattern, fully embedded within the trade networks of the medieval Indian Ocean

    No full text
