Luis Monfort, traductor de literatura religiosa y novela gótica

    No full text
Luis Monfort was a Valencian clergyman who pursued a little known translating career that oscillated between the religious book and the gothic novel. The aim of this paper is to survey such a career and recover it from oblivion, paying also special attention to its connections to the strong pedagogical objectives present in the author's work. Monfort did not use translation as a literary tool to become a writer himself, but rather employed it to defend the conservative status quo of his time, as seen in the prologues he wrote to doctrinal texts like Oficio de la Semana Santa and Evidencia de la religión cristiana contra la filosofía de la incredulidad or gothic novels like La familia de Vieland and Carvino. Despite his efforts, however, in the end Monfort was not remembered for his doctrinal teachings but rather for his gothic leanings.

    Essays in monetary economics

    No full text
This thesis studies the optimal conduct of monetary policy in the presence of nominal and informational frictions. The first chapter studies the optimal policy in a small open economy model with external asset holdings. I show that optimal policy implies moderate inflation volatility with counter-cyclical domestic inflation relative to foreign inflation. The second chapter studies the determinants of financial dollarization and the optimal policy in emerging economies. I show that inflation targeting does not reduce dollarization and is not the optimal policy. Instead, the central bank aims to provide insurance against domestic shocks through its control over domestic inflation. In fact, absent additional frictions, optimal policy achieves efficient risk sharing among households, while at the same time completely eliminating dollarization. Finally, the third chapter studies the optimal monetary policy in a New-Keynesian model with incomplete information. In this setting, disclosure of public information about inefficient shocks reduces household welfare. As a result, the optimal policy is characterized by systematic deviations of the interest rates from the policy rule with a unique optimal variance that maximizes household welfare.

Looking for resource sovereignty in a fragmenting global order: the EU’s response to critical raw materials challenges

    No full text
This chapter examines the European Union's (EU) evolving concerns and strategies regarding critical raw materials (CRMs), which are essential for the renewable energy and digital transitions. The COVID-19 pandemic and geopolitical tensions with Russia and China have made the EU aware of the fragility of some of their supply chains. Initially seen mainly as an economic issue, the secure supply of CRMs is now perceived as a geopolitical concern crucial for strategic autonomy. This shift led to the 2024 Critical Raw Materials Act, which includes domestic and external measures such as bilateral agreements with resource exporters and strategic partnerships with politically like-minded countries. These policies were supported by almost all Member States, EU institutions, and groups in the European Parliament. Overall, this case illustrates a move of the EU from unequivocally advocating global free trade to a more protective approach to secure the raw materials vital for Europe's political and economic ambitions. This chapter received financial support from the project “The Emergence of European Sovereignty in a World of Systemic Rivalry: Strategic Autonomy and Permissive Consensus (EUSOV)”, funded by the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain (Grant number: PID2020-116443GB-I00)

A multiscale spatiotemporal map of protein-RNA assemblies in human cells

RNA metabolism is dynamically orchestrated by RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) in different subcellular spaces. Aberrant regulation of the subcellular RNA-protein interactions leads to severe diseases, such as neural degenerations and cancers. Understanding the precise spatiotemporal dynamics of RBPs and their interacting networks in the steady state and upon perturbation is key to deciphering the cell function. We present the coRIC (compartmentalized RNA Interactome Capture) map, an experimental resource and analytical pipeline to study the subcellular dynamics of RBPs through multimodal dataset integration and machine learning. coRIC map successfully identified 1,768 RBPs, including previously underestimated RBPs, spanning 14 major subcellular regions. This map offered us the opportunity to delineate subcellular RBP features, their intermolecular and intercompartmental relationships. We have also defined the hierarchy of RBP complexes at multiple scales across the cell, uncovering previously unknown functions of multiple RBPs, such as IGF2BP1. Application of coRIC under the perturbations of DNA damage and ALS-related dipeptide repeats uncovered the cRBP dynamic changes in complex composition and subcellular distribution. Our work provides a new reference for systematically studying the subcellular RNA-protein interactions, which helps understand the RBP regulatory networks in RNA biology and disease.

Decentralisation and regional cabinet size: the Spanish case (1979-2015)

    No full text
This article explores under what conditions regional governments tend to have larger or smaller cabinets. The main contention is that cross-regional variation in cabinet size is partly explained by the dynamics set up by the multilevel system of government, mainly territorial decentralisation, multilevel government (in)congruence or the existence of nationally distinct regions. The hypotheses are tested with a new and original dataset built upon the Spanish case (1979-2015). Findings show that regions with more welfare state policies, especially when the region's economic capacity is high, and nationally distinct regions tend to have bigger executives. In contrast, decentralisation in the form of basic state functions and government incongruence do not have a significant effect. Results have important implications for our understanding of sub-national territorial institutions and their interaction with decentralisation dynamics

Social media as an identity barometer: evidence from the Russia-Ukraine war

    No full text
This study investigates how social media data can be used to study shifts in identity, focusing on Ukraine during the Russia-Ukraine war. We analyze VK users' reported language proficiency and the language of tweets and note a significant shift from Russian to Ukrainian during both the early (2014-2022) and later (2022-) phases of the war. Additionally, we observe a positive association at the province level between these language changes and shifts in ethnic identity reported in nationally representative surveys. The findings underscore the effectiveness of social media data in tracking and quantifying shifts in identity

Curs 2024-2025Tutora: Victoria VanascoAmidst growing usage of Machine Learning (ML) models for predictive analysis, this thesis employed a sentiment driven LSTM forecast on the S&P 500 stock price. The LSTM networks were augmented with news articles sentiment encoded with FinBERT, historical stock price data and prediction market forecast from Kalshi to improve forecasting accuracy. The models relied on different sentiment features, such as net daily sentiment and mean negative, neutral and positive sentiment score. Additionally different model architectures were employed, achieving an MAE of 57.04 (0.981% error).

RNA-binding proteins mediate the maturation of chromatin topology during differentiation

    No full text
Topologically associating domains (TADs) and chromatin architectural loops impact promoter-enhancer interactions, with CCCTC-binding factor (CTCF) defining TAD borders and loop anchors. TAD boundaries and loops progressively strengthen upon embryonic stem (ES) cell differentiation, underscoring the importance of chromatin topology in ontogeny. However, the mechanisms driving this process remain unclear. Here we show a widespread increase in CTCF-RNA-binding protein (RBP) interactions upon ES to neural stem (NS) cell differentiation. While dispensable in ES cells, RBPs reinforce CTCF-anchored chromatin topology in NS cells. We identify Pantr1, a non-coding RNA, as a key facilitator of CTCF-RBP interactions, promoting chromatin maturation. Using acute CTCF degradation, we find that, through its insulator function, CTCF helps maintain neuronal gene silencing in NS cells by acting as a barrier to untimely gene activation during development. Altogether, we reveal a fundamental mechanism driving developmentally linked chromatin structural consolidation and the contribution of this process to the control of gene expression in differentiation

    No full text

TOPLAP Athens: a networked live coding community

    No full text
TOPLAP Athens, founded in 2021, is the first Greek-speaking live coding community that focuses on artistic and performative aspects of live coding. This paper outlines the community’s formation, goals, and challenges, highlighting its commitment to fostering collaboration and growth in Greek live coding. Despite geographical dispersion, the group maintains regular online meetups and has performed at significant events such as ICLC 2021, 2023, and 2024. There is a primary focus using SuperCollider and OscGroups for networked performances, prototyping networked setups for handling incompatibilities across different operating systems, and forming a heterogeneous rhizomatic network for creative explorations. While rooted in academic research, the community has evolved to emphasize the artistic and performative aspects of live coding, combining scholarly endeavors with practical exploration and creative expression. Organizational hurdles common to decentralized communities are discussed, along with individual approaches within the group. The paper also discusses future vision, including the exploration of interactive AI and polyglot (i.e. multilingual) live coding performance
