Cooperation in intercultural crisis and conflict environments research
This research investigates (RQ#1) how cooperation can emerge in intercultural crisis and conflict environments. It develops and applies the ECOOPx, a six-dimensional framework to analyze cooperation dynamics across diverse crisis stages. Through a mixed-methods approach and multi-scenario case studies in international politics, business, education, and society, the study identifies both readiness and resistance patterns shaping cooperation outcomes.
Key findings highlight the decisive role of relational dimensions in sustaining long-term cooperation, the strengthening effect of early conflict resolution, the importance of collective memory and early crisis detection, and the positive contribution of cultural diversity, which enhances creativity and problem-solving despite generating leadership tensions.
This is an ongoing and open-ended research project that engages with increasingly complex realities, continuously deepening and expanding its conclusions while examining the transformational changes that define our times

The relationship between confidence and gaze-at-nothing oculomotor dynamics during decision-making
How does confidence relate to oculomotor dynamics during decision-making? Do oculomotor dynamics reflect deliberation and the buildup of confidence in the absence of visual stimuli? Here we examine the hypothesis that working memory, deliberation, and confidence warp oculomotor dynamics, both in the presence and absence of visual stimuli. We analyzed oculomotor dynamics in a decision-making task in which participants were provided with an abstract context in which to make the decision, and two similar option images which became eventually invisible. We show that fixations between the empty locations in which the images were formerly shown continued after the options disappeared, consistently with a sustained deliberative process facilitated by oculomotor dynamics. Both, oculomotor dynamics and decision patterns remained unchanged regardless of whether the stimuli were visible. Furthermore, our analyses show that the number of alternating fixations between stimuli correlated negatively with the confidence reported after each decision, while the observation time of the selected target correlated positively. Given that decisions in our experimental paradigm are reported in the absence of the stimuli, this suggests a relationship between evidence retrieval from working memory, confidence gathering and oculomotor dynamics. Finally, we performed a model comparison based on predictions from drift-diffusion models to assess the relationship between sequential fixations between images, deliberation and confidence gathering, and the ensuing choice. These analyses supported confidence as a contributing cognitive process encompassing serial evidence-gathering and parallel option consideration during decision-making
The FLARE score and circulating neutrophils in patients with cancer and COVID-19 disease
Purpose: Inflammation and neutrophils play a central role in both COVID-19 disease and cancer. We aimed to assess the impact of pre-existing tumor-related inflammation on COVID-19 outcomes in patients with cancer and to elucidate the role of circulating neutrophil subpopulations. Methods: We conducted a multicenter retrospective analysis of 524 patients with cancer and SARS-CoV-2 infection, assessing the relationship between clinical outcomes and circulating inflammatory biomarkers collected before and during COVID-19 infection. Additionally, a single-center prospective cohort study provided data for an exploratory analysis, assessing the immunophenotype of circulating neutrophils and inflammatory cytokines. The primary endpoints were 30-day mortality and the severity of COVID-19 disease. Results: Prior to COVID-19, 25% of patients with cancer exhibited elevated dNLR, which increased to 55% at the time of COVID-19 diagnosis. We developed the FLARE score, incorporating both tumor- and infection-induced inflammation, which categorized patients into four prognostic groups. The poor prognostic group had a 30-day mortality rate of 68%, significantly higher than the 23% in the favorable group (p < 0.0001). This score proved to be an independent predictor of early mortality. This prospective analysis revealed a shift towards immature forms of neutrophils and higher IL-6 levels in patients with cancer and severe COVID-19 infection. Conclusions: A pre-existing tumor-induced pro-inflammatory state significantly impacts COVID-19 outcomes in patients with cancer. The FLARE score, derived from circulating inflammatory markers, emerges as an easy-to-use, globally accessible, effective tool for clinicians to identify patients with cancer at heightened risk of severe COVID-19 complications and early mortality who might benefit most from immediate and intensive treatment strategies. Furthermore, our findings underscore the significance of immature neutrophils in the progression of COVID-19 in patients with cancer, advocating for further investigation into how these cells contribute to both cancer and COVID-19 disease.E.S. was supported by the Contracte Clínic Recerca “Emili Letang i Josep Font” 2022 and I Predoctoral Grant in Precision Oncology, 2022 (Cátedra UB IOP). Ucraïna, mon amour de Carles Torner o la (auto)traducció com un acte d'amor
This article aims to analyze Ucraïna, mon amour (Torner, 2023), a novel featuring the Catalan translator of I. B. Singer as a paradigmatic example of the so-called «transfiction». Singer’s presence, also portrayed as a character within the fiction, allows for a profound reflection on the intimate link between writing and translation, concurrently connecting the various 20th-century exiles with the current war in Ukraine. The
analysis focuses on the multiple meanings and metaphors associated with translation, such as cultural bridge, journey, exile, survival, resistance, and, above all, love. Through the literary motif of translation, the intertextual dialogues with the works of the writer in Yiddish and other authors, including Carles Torner, will be explored. The article also examines different translation scenes that unfold throughout the novel
In Spanish cinema of the 1950s, the criminal film genre started imitating Hollywood’s film noir. The femme fatale archetype is one of the elements adopted from this cinematography, portrayed by actresses such as Katia Loritz and Emma Penella. In the 1960s, criminal cinema evolved into other genres, including criminal comedy, in which the parodic femme fatale makes its appearance. This doctoral thesis, situated within the methodological framework of star studies, analyzes the performance and star image of the actresses who embodied this archetype in Spanish crime and criminal comedy films between 1950 and 1975. It will study how these actresses represented the archetype in Spanish cinema and what it meant at the time to be associated with a form of femininity that was deemed undesirable by the Francoist regime.Programa de Doctorat en Comunicaci

The role of the γ-TuRC subunit GCP8 in microtubule regulation and cytoskeleton organization
Microtubules (MTs) are part of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells and are nucleated by the γ-tubulin ring complex (γTuRC), at the centrosome, which is also called the MTOC (microtubule organizing centers). The subunit Mozart2/GCP8 is not required for γTuRC assembly/stability and has no obvious role in mitotic spindle assembly. As part of my PhD thesis project I tried to shed light on the role of GCP8 and it’s interphase function in cytoskeleton organization.
I was able to further characterise GCP8 as a subunit and it’s γTuRC independent role. I provided a deeper insight into non-centrosomal/non-mitotic γTuRC functions and the organization/regulation of the interphase microtubule network. Further more I might implicate an additional function of GCP8 in cell attachment/migration and cancer cell migration.
Development of prognostic models for resected distal cholangiocarcinoma
Distal cholangiocarcinoma is a biliary malignancy associated with poor oncological outcomes with a 5-year survival rate after surgery from 16% to 39.5%.
There’s an urgent need to develop a valid prognostic model that assesses the clinical implications of combination of prognostic indicators for resected distal cholangiocarcinoma, identifying high-risk patients for recurrence.
This doctoral thesis is based on two published articles.
For the first study, we have developed a nomogram integrating independent prognostic factors to create a prognostic model for recurrence-free survival in distal cholangiocarcinoma.
For the second study, A LASSO-regularized Cox regression model was employed for feature selection, examining coefficients' paths and creating a model to predict recurrence. Additionally, a web application was developed to enhance the clinical use of the algorithm.
