    El objetivo del artículo es reflexionar sobre el procedimiento de gestión icónica utilizado por Alfredo Jaar (Santiago, 1956) dentro del contexto de las obras derivadas de Rwanda Project, un monumental trabajo realizado desde 1994 que enuncia los desastres causados por la violencia inhumana en el genocidio de Ruanda. La intención es comprender los mecanismos retóricos usados por Jaar -mise-en-invisibilité- dirigidos a la conciencia visual del espectador a través de la ocultación total o parcial de la imagen, la narración secuencial y procedimientos escenográficos establecidos en instalaciones de gran formato o la evocación literaria

    Genderqueer identity development in the digital age: an exploration of transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer people’s experiences navigating gender and online spaces

Although online spaces have become more relevant for younger generations, and can provide LGBTQ+ people with community and support, online gender identity development remains under researched. This study explores gender identity development in the digital age for genderqueer people and how online spaces have played a role in this process. A sample of eleven participants took part in qualitative in-depth interviews which were then analysed according to grounded theory. This analysis resulted in four main themes with corresponding subcategories. The findings indicate that transgender, nonbinary, and genderqueer people actively use online spaces to help develop their gender identity in many ways, warranting future research

    Development of a multimodal strategy to investigate speech processing mechanisms in infants

Curs 2024-2025 Tutors: Dr. Núria Sebastián Gallés, Ibtissam Ghailan TribakUnderstanding how infants process speech signal is a question of interest in neuroscience, because it provides insight into the early language acquisition and cognition development. However, investigating these mechanisms requires neuroimaging tools capable of capturing brain activity, adapted to the specific challenges of measuring this population. This Bachelor’s thesis contributes to a broader project that aims to uncover speech processing mechanisms in 4-5-month-old infants, presenting the development of a multimodal strategy that integrates electroencephalography (EEG), functional Diffusion Correlation Spectroscopy (fDCS) and functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) to acquire data by characterizing the neuronal activity and its relation to oxygen metabolism (i.e., energetic demand and oxygen consumption). To do so, this project aims to develop a multimodal system that combines optical techniques (fNIRS and fDCS) with EEG. Optical techniques would provide hemodynamic response, while EEG will quantify the electrical activity of the neurons enabling acquisition with both high temporal and spatial resolution. To implement this approach, a custom pipeline combining Python with 3D modelling was developed to automate the generation of sensor configuration (EEG electrodes, fNIRS and fDCS optodes) while respecting anatomical and technical constraints. Moreover, it also addresses the challenge of reducing the attrition rate caused by poor signal quality due to hair related issues in fDCS measurements. To address this challenge, a novel mechanism was developed based on pressure adjustment. Following multiple iterations, some models were prototyped through 3D printing and CNC (Computer Numerical Control) turning to ensure mechanical robustness and usability. The final system has the potential to improve contact across diverse hair types, to reduce setup time and to minimize participant exclusion. While further improvements are needed before deployment, the system represents a meaningful step toward enabling simultaneous acquisition of EEG, fNIRS and fDCS data in early infancy

    Este capítulo ofrece un análisis funcional integral de Web of Science Research Assistant, una herramienta de inteligencia artificial generativa integrada en la base de datos académica de Clarivate. Diseñada para mejorar los flujos de trabajo de investigación, la herramienta apoya tareas como revisiones de literatura, exploración temática, identificación de expertos y selección de revistas. A través de un examen detallado de su interfaz y funcionalidades, que incluyen la síntesis temática, el mapeo de co-citaciones y la visualización de tendencias, este capítulo destaca el potencial de la herramienta para agilizar el descubrimiento científico. Se presentan varios casos prácticos que demuestran sus capacidades para optimizar búsquedas, identificar artículos seminales y sugerir revistas de publicación relevantes. A pesar de sus características innovadoras, el uso de la herramienta debe guiarse por el pensamiento crítico, la transparencia y las consideraciones éticas. Se anima a los investigadores a ver al asistente no como un sustituto, sino como un complemento de la labor académica.     Impact of basic psychological needs fulfillment on teachers’ well-being in online communities: designing for well-being

    This study examines the use of Online Communities of teachers (OCs) and their impact on educators' well-being, while exploring the broader implications for platform design. These OCs provide educators with opportunities to connect, share resources, engage in discussions, and enhance their professional practice. Based in the Self-Determination Theory (SDT), this research uses the METUX framework to explore how teachers' perceptions of technology use affect the fulfillment of their basic psychological needs within OCs, ultimately impacting their well-being. Therefore, we build the main motivation of this paper: Propose well-being informed design implications based on the OCs of the ILDE+ environment: a total of 88 teachers, users of three streamlined versions (OCs) of the ILDE+ Environment platform, were recruited. Our analysis (including reliability, discriminant validity, correlation, and network analysis) reveals specific teachers’ needs of technology use that relate to the SDT factors and influence teachers' well-being and behavioral trends in OCs, with some limitations regarding the specific dimension of Autonomy of TENS-Interface. Generally, Interface interactions typically impact the link between competence and autonomy, which in turn reverberates to relatedness. While task performance impacts competence and relatedness as an interconnected cluster and autonomy on a more individual basis. Additionally, perceived platform usefulness boosts teachers' self-efficacy and confidence, supporting higher engagement and knowledge sharing. These findings offer guidance for targeted design improvements to better support teacher well-being in OCs, by exploring the factors explaining technology use behavior.     Multimodal skills, but not motor skills, predict narrative and expressive pragmatic skills in children with typical development and neurodevelopmental disorders

    To see whether communicative-based multimodal skills (compared to non-communicative motor skills) predicted complex language skills, this study examined the predictive power of multimodal and motor skills on narrative and expressive pragmatic abilities across two groups. Participants were children with typical development (N=88, Mage=5.34, 48% female) and with neurodevelopmental disorders (N = 51, Mage = 5.01, 25% female) mostly of white ethnicity (86.3%). We evaluated children's multimodal accuracy, motor skills, core language skills, and narrative and pragmatic skills. Results revealed that, in all groups, both multimodal skills and core language significantly predicted narrative (R2 = 0.569) and pragmatic skills (R2 = 0.621), while motor skills did not.     Electoral and partisan consequences of sovereignty referendum outcomes: a comparative analysis

    Data de publicació electrònica: 14-02-2025What are the electoral consequences of winning a sovereignty referendum? While some argue that these referendums increase the electoral power of pro-sovereignty parties or even put in motion a slippery slope towards more (radical) demands, others sustain that sovereignty-related referendums are a "once in a generation" event, decrease the salience of territorial politics and hence the electoral appeal of pro-decentralisation parties. We put these narratives to the test using the newly compiled CONREF dataset, which includes comprehensive information on the type of sovereignty referendums, the party electoral outcomes before and after the referendum and their policy position. Our analysis shows no relationship between winning a sovereignty referendum and parties' electoral fortunes. It also shows that referendums do not affect the territorial position of the parties -irrespective of the referendum outcome. If anything, we observe that the main party in the winner's block loses support when the referendum passes for a small margin and that the opposition benefits when their side wins. In addition, looking at the EU referendums, we observe that when the position of anti-EU parties wins they become less Eurosceptic. Overall, our article improves our understanding of the dynamics of the winner-loser effects in sovereignty referendums and its spillovers to elections

    Explaining the relationship between precarious employment conditions and mental health among healthcare workers: the mediating role of psychological experience of work precarity

    Data de publicació electrònica: 18-06-2025The adverse effects of precarious employment on mental health are well-established, yet the mediating mechanisms require further elucidation to understand their impact. In line with Allan et al.’s (2021), work precarity framework, subjective psychological experiences (in this study, job insecurity, moral distress, and work/family (in)balance) are investigated as mediating mechanisms linking the “objective situation of precarious employment” (using the EPRES scale) to mental health. As hypothesized, psychological experiences of work precarity mediate the detrimental effects of precarious employment on mental health in a large sample of Belgian and Finnish healthcare workers (n = 9041). These findings provide a novel exploration of the complex mediational pathway of subjective psychological experiences. Our study thereby offers evidence for an explanatory model that reconciles materialist and psychological understandings of the relation between precarious employment and mental health

    Critical thinking and artificial intelligence in academia: a qualitative matrix analysis procedure for evaluating AI systems

    This work introduces the Matrix AI Systems Analysis Procedure (MASIA), a qualitative, matrix-based method designed to evaluate the performance and quality of generative artificial intelligence systems within academic settings. MASIA centers on the analysis of three key components in AI-generated responses: narrative synthesis, source usage, and the formulation of new prompts. By doing so, it fosters critical thinking among users and offers valuable tools for both teaching and research.The procedure defines variables and analytical parameters that enable the comparison of different AI systems, thereby supporting informed decision-making in scholarly and research environments. Furthermore, MASIA integrates ethical considerations, including traceability, proper attribution, and plagiarism prevention, making it a flexible instrument adaptable to various academic needs and projects. The chapter concludes that MASIA is a straightforward yet powerful tool for enhancing critical thinking, improving teaching and learning processes, and providing a foundation for comparative research on artificial intelligence in academia.This work is part of the Project “Parameters and strategies to increase the relevance of media and digital communication in society: curation, visualisation and visibility (CUVICOM)”.
