Epilepsy care in conflict and insecure areas

    No full text

The challenges in health care system in Nigeria including poor infrastructure, inadequate manpower and inadequate funding affect Epilepsy care particularly in rural, conflict and insecure areas where patients suffer unnecessarily from the disease and its complications. A Community based approach in the BRIDGE Project explored the challenges faced by the BRIDGE Team in an area affected by conflict and insecurity (Kaduna State) between 2020 to 2024.

Low awareness of the disease and its causation; many associate the disease with spiritual possession leading to stigma and discrimination; Limited access to health care facilities/services (supportive care; physiotherapy, rehabilitation, speech therapy etc ); Poor access to appropriate medication (drug type/ formulation/
genuineness); Lack of adequate resources for diagnosis and management; and lack of adequate number of skilled human resource to care for the disease were some of the challenges identified

Engagement with local community and leaders created increased awareness for care seeking behaviour; while Local training for local health care workforce improved capacity to diagnosis and care.</p&gt

Awareness and knowledge of pet-associated zoonoses and their implications for sustainable health in the Greater Accra region.

    No full text

This preprint focuses on the awareness and knowledge of pet owners regarding zoonotic diseases. Globally, zoonotic diseases pose ongoing challenges to veterinary and health systems, prompting significant efforts to prevent and control these diseases. Effective prevention of zoonoses relies on the awareness and knowledge of all relevant stakeholders for successful control strategies. Each successful control strategy depends on a clear understanding of the disease. Therefore, this study examines pet owners' awareness and level of knowledge about zoonotic diseases, which has important implications for achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG 3).

Background

Research indicates that humans and pets often share similar pathogens due to constant interactions, increasing zoonoses transmission risks. With the growing number of pets in Ghana, it is essential to assess pet owners' awareness and basic knowledge of zoonoses, which has implications for SDG 3.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Greater Accra region. Semi-structured questionnaires were administered to pet owners in households and those visiting veterinary clinics, using purposive sampling. Awareness of pet-associated zoonoses was evaluated by determining whether individuals had heard of these diseases while basic knowledge was assessed through their responses to questions on zoonoses transmission and prevention.

Results

Over 69.1% of pet owners were aware of zoonoses, with 39.2% correctly identifying them as diseases transmitted from animals to humans. Most (37.3%) identified rabies as a zoonotic disease, while 24.3% could not name any. The study found significant associations between awareness and factors like educational level and age. Basic knowledge of zoonoses also correlated with gender, age, educational level, and residence. Identified risk factors included not adhering to scheduled deworming or vaccinations of pets, allowing pets to forage, and poor hand hygiene.

Conclusion

The study found that while many pet owners were aware of zoonoses, particularly rabies, many lacked basic knowledge about them. The study found that basic knowledge of pet-associated zoonoses is influenced by gender, age, education level, and place of residence. The significance of public health education in addressing zoonoses risks, their transmission, and prevention in the Greater Accra region is crucial for promoting sustainable health.</p&gt

The Relevance of Archives in University Libraries: A Case Study of Uganda Christian University

    No full text

Archives are an integral part of university libraries, serving as custodians of historical, academic, and cultural records. This paper explores the role of archives within the context of Uganda Christian University (UCU), highlighting their significance in supporting research, preserving institutional memory, and contributing to the university's educational mission. Through a case study approach, the study examines the archival services provided by UCU’s library, the challenges faced, and the opportunities for improving archival practices to meet the evolving needs of students, faculty, and the broader community. Findings suggest that archives not only preserve historical documents but also foster academic inquiry, assist in the development of critical thinking, and enhance the university’s contribution to knowledge creation and dissemination.</p&gt

Standardization of the Donation Process to Low to Middle-Income Countries Based on Good Automated Manufacturing Practices Principle

    No full text

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 70% of medical devices in the LMIC context become decrepit before the end of their anticipated useful lives. This is mainly because the needs and associated variables of LMIC are not considered in the initial design of the medical devices, which particularly considers the needs of the initial purchaser. However, medical devices find their way to LMIC through donations. Unfortunately, it is common for the recipients to lack the necessary tools to use the donated medical devices because the donated equipment did not consider the realities of the end user.

By introducing the collaboration of the Biomedical Engineering discipline, advanced public health solutions could be materialized to optimize donated medical devices. These solutions could range from the logistical hurdles during transit to the infrastructure needs of the donation institution. Given the idealistic nature of the donation of medical devices, Biomedical Engineers could turn the efforts into a logical, practical, and realistic goal.

Due to the large complexity of the issue, this paper will focus on providing solutions to the initial donation process by utilizing aspects of Good Automated Manufacturing Practices (GAMP5). The purpose of utilizing the GAMP5 principles to the initial donation process is to reduce the number of requirements that a Biomedical Engineer must implement before the device makes it into the donation institution's workflow. By integrating GAMP5 into a standardized form within the donation process, donated medical devices would be more likely to contribute to the long-term success within the donated institution.</p&gt
