WirelessSyncroVision: Wireless synchronization for industrial stereoscopic systems
The research proposes a novel technological solution for marker-based human motion capture called WirelessSyncroVision (WSV). The WSV is formed by two main modules: the visual node (WSV-V) which is based on a stereoscopic vision system and the marker node (WSV-M) that is constituted by a 6-DOF active marker. The solution synchronizes the acquisition of images in remote muti-cameras with the ON period of the active marker. This increases the robustness of the stereoscopic system to illumination changes, which is extremely relevant for programming industrial robotic-arms using a human demonstrator programming by demonstration (PbD). In addition, the research presents a robust method named Adaptive and Robust Synchronization (ARS), that is designed for temporal alignment of remote devices using a wireless network. The algorithm models the phase difference as a function of time, measuring the parameters that must be known to predict the synchronization instant between the active marker and the remote cameras. Results demonstrate that the ARS creates a balance between the real-time capability and the performance estimation of the phase difference. Therefore, this research proposes an elegant solution to synchronize image acquisition systems in real-time that is easy to implement with low operational costs; however, the major advantage of the WSV is related to its high level of flexibility since it can be extended toward to other devices besides the PbD, for instance, motion capture, motion analysis, and remote sensoring systems
MINAS: multiclass learning algorithm for novelty detection in data streams
Data stream mining is an emergent research area that aims at extracting knowledge from large amounts of continuously generated data. Novelty detection (ND) is a classification task that assesses if one or a set of examples differ significantly from the previously seen examples. This is an important task for data stream, as new concepts may appear, disappear or evolve over time. Most of the works found in the ND literature presents it as a binary classification task. In several data stream real life problems, ND must be treated as a multiclass task, in which, the known concept is composed by one or more classes and different new classes may appear. This work proposes MINAS, an algorithm for ND in data streams. MINAS deals with ND as a multiclass task. In the initial training phase, MINAS builds a decision model based on a labeled data set. In the online phase, new examples are classified using this model, or marked as unknown. Groups of unknown examples can be used later to create valid novelty patterns (NP), which are added to the current model. The decision model is updated as new data come over the stream in order to reflect changes in the known classes and allow the addition of NP. This work also presents a set of experiments carried out comparing MINAS and the main novelty detection algorithms found in the literature, using artificial and real data sets. The experimental results show the potential of the proposed algorithm
[INVITED] New advances in fiber cavity ring-down technology
A brief review in the cavity ring-down technique (CRD) is presented. In this review, there will only be considered the conventional fiber CRD configuration, i.e., there will only be presented researches involving cavities with two couplers with 99:1 ratios, due to the large amount of publications involving this spectroscopy method. The presented survey is divided in different topics related to the measurement of physical parameters, such as strain and temperature, curvature, pressure, refractive index, gas and biochemical sensing
Design and Application of a Power Unit to Use Plug-In Electric Vehicles as an Uninterruptible Power Supply
Grid-enabled vehicles (GEVs) such as plug-in electric vehicles present environmental and energy sustainability advantages compared to conventional vehicles. GEV runs solely on power generated by its own battery group, which supplies power to its electric motor. This battery group can be charged from external electric sources. Nowadays, the interaction of GEV with the power grid is unidirectional by the charging process. However, GEV can be operated bi-directionally by modifying its power unit. In such operating conditions, GEV can operate as an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and satisfy a portion or the total energy demand of the consumption center independent from utility grid, which is known as vehicle-to-home (V2H). In this paper, a power unit is developed for GEVs in the laboratory to conduct simulation and experimental studies to test the performance of GEVs as a UPS unit in V2H mode at the time of need. The activation and deactivation of the power unit and islanding protection unit are examined when energy is interrupted
Call admission control for wireless mesh network based on power interference modeling using directional antenna
Interference is a fundamental issue in wireless mesh networks (WMNs) and it seriously affects the network performance. In this paper we characterize the power interference in IEEE 802.11 CSMA/CA based wireless mesh networks using directional antennas. A model based centralized call admission control (CAC) scheme is proposed which uses physical collision constraints, and transmitter-side, receiver-side and when-idle protocol collision prevention constraints. The CAC assists to manage requests from users depending on the available bandwidth in the network: when a new virtual link establishment request from a user is accepted into the network, resources such as interface, bandwidth, transmission power and channel are allocated in the participating nodes and released once the session is completed. The proposed CAC is also able to contain the interference in the WMN by managing the transmission power of nodes
Validating an Approach to Formalize Use Cases with Ontologies
Use case driven development methodologies put use cases at the center of the software development process. However, in order to support automated development and analysis, use cases need to be appropriately formalized. This will also help guarantee consistency between requirements specifications and developed solutions. Formal methods tend to suffer from take up issues, as they are usually hard to accept by industry. In this context, it is relevant not only to produce languages and approaches to support formalization, but also to perform their validation. In previous works we have developed an approach to formalize use cases resorting to ontologies. In this paper we present the validation of one such approach. Through a three stage study, we evaluate the acceptance of the language and supporting tool. The first stage focusses on the acceptance of the process and language, the second on the support the tool provides to the process, and finally the third one on the tool's usability aspects. Results show test subjects found the approach feasible and useful and the tool easy to use
The two faces of metal ions: From implants rejection to tissue repair/regeneration
The paradigm of metallic ions as exclusive toxic agents is changing. During the last 60 years, knowledge about toxicological and immunological reactions to metal particles and ions has advanced considerably. Hip prostheses, namely metal-on-metal bearings, have prompted studies about excessive and prolonged exposure to prosthetic debris. In that context, the interactions of metal particles and ions with cells and tissues are mostly harmful, inducing immune responses that lead to osteolysis and implant failure. However, in the last decade, new strategies to promote immunomodulation and healing have emerged based on the unique properties of metallic ions. The atom-size and charge enable ions to interact with key macromolecules (e.g. proteins, nucleic acids) that affect cellular function. Moreover, these agents are inexpensive, stable and can be integrated in biomaterials, which may open new avenues for a novel generation of medical devices. Herein, orthopedic devices are discussed as models for adverse responses to metal ions, and debated together with the potential to use metal ions-based therapies, thus bridging the gap between unmet clinical needs and cutting-edge research. In summary, this review addresses the two "faces" of metallic ions, from pathological responses to innovative research strategies that use metal ions for regenerative medicine
The role of fire-suppression force in limiting the spread of extremely large forest fires in Portugal
Large forest fires are notorious for their environmental and socio-economic impacts and are assigned a disproportionately high percentage of the fire management budget. This study addresses extremely large fires (ELF, C2500 ha) in Portugal (2003-2013). We analysed the effect of fire-suppression force variation on ELF duration, size and growth rate, versus the effect of the concomitant fire environment (namely fuel and weather) conditions. ELF occurred in highly flammable landscapes and typically were impelled by extreme fire weather conditions. Allocation of suppression resources (normalized per unit of burned area or perimeter length) was disparate among fires, suggesting inadequate incident management. Fire-suppression effort did not affect time to containment modelled by survival analysis. Regression tree analysis indicated ELF spread to be negatively affected by higher fire-suppression resourcing, less severe fire weather, lower time to containment and higher presence of <9-year-old fuels, by decreasing order of importance; regional variability was relevant. Fire environment-to-fire suppression ratios of influence were 3: 1 for fire size and 1: 1 for fire growth rate, respectively, explaining 76 and 60 % of the existing variability. Results highlight the opportunistic nature of large-fire containment. To minimize the area burned by ELF, management and operational improvements leading to faster containment are recommended, rather than higher fire-suppression resourcing; more effective identification and exploration of containment opportunities are preferable to the accumulation of suppression resources
Treatment of crystallized-fruit wastewater by UV-A LED photo-Fenton and coagulation flocculation
This work reports the treatment of crystallized-fruit effluents, characterized by a very low biodegradability (BOD5/COD 180 min), a COD removal of 45, 64 and 74% was achieved after 360 min, using an irradiance of 23, 70 and 85 W/m(2) respectively. Then a combination of UV-A LED photo-Fenton with coagulation flocculation decantation attained a higher COD removal (80%), as well as almost total removal of turbidity (99%) and total suspended solids (95%). Subsequent biodegradability of treated effluents increased, allowing the application of a biological treatment step after the photochemical/CFD with 85 W/m(2)
