Two alternative robust optimization models for flexible power management of electric vehicles in distribution networks
This paper presents a robust optimization problem of the flexible bidirectional power management of a smart distribution network and harmonic compensation of nonlinear loads using electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with bidirectional chargers. The base deterministic model of the proposed problem is as mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), having the objective function to minimize the economic and technical indices subject to harmonic load flow equations, EVs constraints, system operation and harmonic indices limits. This model is converted to a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model in the next step. In the proposed MILP model, the active, reactive and apparent loads, electrical energy, reactive power and harmonic current prices, as well as EVs characteristics, are considered uncertain parameters. Accordingly, two alternative robust optimization approaches have been implemented for the conditions of having both the probability distribution function or the bounded uncertainty in the proposed MILP problem model. The proposed model is tested on distribution networks to demonstrate its efficiency and performance. The results show that the MINLP model can be substituted by the proposed high-speed MILP model. In addition, the capacity of the injecting power of EVs is reduced in the worst-case scenario with respect to the scenario that is used in the deterministic model, while the consumed power of loads and EVs and energy price increases in this scenario. Finally, the payment of EV owners is reduced by considering EVs power and harmonic control. © 2017 Elsevier Lt
Bootstrap and permutation tests in ANOVA for directional data
The problem of testing the null hypothesis of a common direction across several populations defined on the hypersphere arises frequently when we deal with directional data. We may consider the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) for testing such hypotheses. However, for the Watson distribution, a commonly used distribution for modeling axial data, the ANOVA test is only valid for large concentrations. So we suggest to use alternative tests, such as bootstrap and permutation tests in ANOVA. Then, we investigate the performance of these tests for data from Watson populations defined on the hypersphere
Contribution of tidal power generation system for damping inter-area oscillation
The growing need for the clean and renewable energy has led to the fast development of grid-connected tidal stream power generation systems all over the world. These large scale tidal stream power generation systems are going to be connected to power systems and one of the important subjects that should be investigated is its impacts on power system stability. Hence, this paper investigates the possibility of tidal stream power generation system on damping inter-area oscillations, as a new contribution to earlier studies. As tidal farms are mostly installed far from conventional power plants, local signals do not include good quality to alleviate inter-area oscillations. To overcome the problem, a novel damping controller is developed by employing wide-area measurement system and added to base controllers of doubly-fed induction generator through tidal stream power generation system. The proposed wide area damping controller includes efficient means to compensate for the incompatible performances of wide area measurement based delayed signals. Robustness of the designed damping controller has been demonstrated by facing the study system with faults leading to enough shifts in power system operating point, and tidal farm generation
Eating behaviour among nutrition students and social desirability as a confounder
Introduction: The study of eating behaviour should consider the presence of potential sources of bias, including social desirability. This is particularly relevant among students of Nutrition Sciences, since they have a higher risk of eating disorders. Objective: To analyse the effect of social desirability in the assessment of eating behaviour dimensions among nutrition students. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we analysed data from 149 students of Nutrition Sciences. Participants completed a questionnaire assessing social desirability and eating behaviour dimensions (emotional, external and binge eating, flexible and rigid control, and eating self-efficacy). Results: Among males, social desirability had a negative association with binge eating, while among women it had a negative association with emotional, external and binge eating and a positive association with eating self-efficacy. In both subsamples, social desirability showed no significant association with any of the two types of dietary restraint (rigid and flexible control). Discussion: Overall, the association between social desirability and eating behaviour dimensions among students of Nutrition Sciences occurs in the same direction as found in students from other areas. However, alongside these similarities, there is a stronger association between social desirability and binge eating among male students of Nutrition Sciences. We hypothesize that this may be related with the different knowledge of students from different areas, and the way they perceive and face the treatment of eating disorders. Conclusion: Our study shows that social desirability should be considered while assessing eating behaviour among nutrition students, particularly when studying external eating, binge eating and eating self-efficacy. Moreover, when tailoring interventions to reduce the possible effects of eating behaviour on nutritionists and dieticians' practice, we should consider the influence of social desirability
Radio-cephalic fistula recovered with drainage to forearm basilic vein
Dysfunction problems with vascular access are a concern to patients and dialysis units. The vascular surgeon should analyse such dysfunction and perform a careful assessment of the vascular network in order to find new fistula layouts. We introduce and discuss the case of creation of a radiocephalic fistula with outflow into the forearm basilic vein through rotation of the forearm basilic vein toward the cephalic vein in the forearm of an 88-year-old hemodialysis male patient. This technique enables extending fistula patency and improves cost efficiency

Proposal for a gold standard for cosmetic evaluation after breast conserving therapy: Results from the St George and Wollongong Breast Boost trial
IntroductionBreast cosmesis is an important endpoint of breast conserving therapy (BCT), but a gold standard method of its evaluation is not yet established. The St. George and Wollongong Randomised Breast Boost trial used five different methods of cosmetic assessment, including both subjective and objective, to comprehensively evaluate the cosmetic outcome of the trial patients. This current study analyses the level of concordance between these methods in an attempt to determine a possible standard in the evaluation of breast cosmesis. MethodsPatients attending follow-up clinic reviews at 5years post breast radiotherapy were evaluated. Patients completed a cosmesis and functional assessment questionnaire, assessing clinicians completed an EORTC (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer) cosmetic rating questionnaire and photographs were obtained. The photographs were later assessed by a panel of five experts, as well as analysed using the objective pBRA (relative Breast Retraction Assessment) and the BCCT.core (Breast Cancer Conservative Treatment.cosmetic results) computer software. Scores were dichotomised to excellent/good and fair/poor. Pairwise comparisons between all methods, except pBRA, were carried out using overall agreement calculations and kappa scores. pBRA scores were compared on a continuous scale with each of the other dichotomised scores obtained by the other four methods. ResultsOf 513 St George patients alive at 5years, 385 (75%) attended St George for follow-up and consented to photography. Results showed that assessment by physicians in clinic and patient self-assessment were more favourable regarding overall cosmetic outcome than evaluation of photographs by the panel or the BCCT.core software. Excellent/good scores by clinician-live and patient self-assessments were 93% and 94% respectively (agreement 89%), as compared to 75% and 74% only by BCCT.core and panel assessments respectively (agreement 83%, kappa 0.57). For the pBRA measurements, there was a statistically significant difference (P <0.001) between scores for excellent/good versus fair/poor cosmesis by all four methods. The range of median pBRA measurements for fair/poor scores was 13.4-14.8 and for excellent/good scores was 8.0-9.4. ConclusionIncorporating both BCCT.core assessment and patient self-assessment could potentially provide the basis of a gold standard method of breast cosmetic evaluation. BCCT.core represents an easy, time efficient, reproducible, cost effective and reliable method, however, it lacks the functional and psychosocial elements of cosmesis that only patient self-reported outcomes can provide
A Review of Smart Cities Based on the Internet of Things Concept
With the expansion of smart meters, like the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), each smart city is equipped with various kinds of electronic devices. Therefore, equipment and technologies enable us to be smarter and make various aspects of smart cities more accessible and applicable. The goal of the current paper is to provide an inclusive review on the concept of the smart city besides their different applications, benefits, and advantages. In addition, most of the possible IoT technologies are introduced, and their capabilities to merge into and apply to the different parts of smart cities are discussed. The potential application of smart cities with respect to technology development in the future provides another valuable discussion in this paper. Meanwhile, some practical experiences all across the world and the key barriers to its implementation are thoroughly expressed
Forecasting bivalve landings with multiple regression and data mining techniques: The case of the Portuguese Artisanal Dredge Fleet
This paper develops a decision support tool that can help fishery authorities to forecast bivalve landings for the dredge fleet accounting for several contextual conditions. These include weather conditions, phytotoxins episodes, stock-biomass indicators per species and tourism levels. Vessel characteristics and fishing effort are also taken into account for the estimation of landings. The relationship between these factors and monthly quantities landed per vessel is explored using multiple linear regression models and data mining techniques (random forests, support vector machines and neural networks). The models are specified for different regions in the Portugal mainland (Northwest, Southwest and South) using six years of data 2010-2015). Results showed that the impact of the contextual factors varies between regions and also depends on the vessels target species. The data mining techniques, namely the random forests, proved to be a robust decision support tool in this context, outperforming the predictive performance of the most popular technique used in this context, i.e. linear regression
