    Heuristics for scheduling jobs in a permutation flow shop to minimize total earliness and tardiness with unforced idle time allowed

    This paper considers the problem of scheduling jobs in a permutation flow shop with the objective of minimizing total earliness and tardiness. Unforced idle time is considered in order to reduce the earliness of jobs. It is shown how unforced idle time can be inserted on the final machine. Several dispatching heuristics that have been used for the problem without unforced idle time were modified and tested. Several procedures were also developed that conduct a second pass to develop a sequence using dispatching rules. These procedures were also tested and were found to result in better solutions

    This paper reviews flexibility products and flexibility markets, currently being discussed or designed to help in the operation of power systems under their evolving environment. This evolution is characterized by the increase of renewable generation and distributed energy resources (including distributed generation, self-consumption, demand response and electric vehicles). The paper is an attempt to review and classify flexibility products considering its main attributes such as scope, purpose, location or provider, and to summarize some of the main approaches to flexibility markets designs and implementations. Main current literature gaps and most promising research lines for future work are also identified

    3D mapping of choroidal thickness from OCT B-scans

    The choroid is the middle layer of the eye globe located between the retina and the sclera. It is proven that choroidal thickness is a sign of multiple eye diseases. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique that allows the visualization of tomographic images of near surface tissues like those in the eye globe. The automatic calculation of the choroidal thickness reduces the subjectivity of manual image analysis as well as the time of large scale measurements. In this paper, a method for the automatic estimation of the choroidal thickness from OCT images is presented. The pre-processing of the images is focused on noise reduction, shadow removal and contrast adjustment. The inner and outer boundaries of the choroid are delineated sequentially, resorting to a minimum path algorithm supported by new dedicated cost matrices. The choroidal thickness is given by the distance between the two boundaries. The data are then interpolated and mapped to an infrared image of the eye fundus. The method was evaluated by calculating the error as the distance from the automatically estimated boundaries to the boundaries delineated by an ophthalmologist. The error of the automatic segmentation was low and comparable to the differences between manual segmentations from different ophthalmologists. © 2018, Springer International Publishing AG

    Efficient heuristics for minimizing weighted sum of squared tardiness on identical parallel machines

    Scheduling jobs on a set of identical parallel machines using efficient heuristics when the objective is to minimize total weighted squared tardiness is considered. Two efficient heuristics and an improvement procedure are presented for the problem. These heuristics and other heuristics are tested using problem sets that represent a variety of conditions. The results show that one of the heuristics consistently performs better than the other heuristics tested. It is also shown how these heuristics can be incorporated into other procedures such as the existing Lagrangian relaxation procedure or meta-heuristics to obtain improved solutions for medium sized problems. © 2018 Elsevier Lt

    EmoSpell, a morphological and emotional word analyzer

    The analysis of sentiments, emotions, and opinions in texts is increasingly important in the current digital world. The existing lexicons with emotional annotations for the Portuguese language are oriented to polarities, classifying words as positive, negative, or neutral. To identify the emotional load intended by the author, it is necessary to also categorize the emotions expressed by individual words. EmoSpell is an extension of a morphological analyzer with semantic annotations of the emotional value of words. It uses Jspell as the morphological analyzer and a new dictionary with emotional annotations. This dictionary incorporates the lexical base EMOTAIX.PT, which classifies words based on three different levels of emotions-global, specific, and intermediate. This paper describes the generation of the EmoSpell dictionary using three sources: the Jspell Portuguese dictionary and the lexical bases EMOTAIX.PT and SentiLex-PT. Additionally, this paper details the Web application and Web service that exploit this dictionary. It also presents a validation of the proposed approach using a corpus of student texts with different emotional loads. The validation compares the analyses provided by EmoSpell with the mentioned emotional lexical bases on the ability to recognize emotional words and extract the dominant emotion from a text. © 2018 by the authors
