This paper focuses on the attitude of Czech and Slovak college students toward learning Spanish with native and non-native teachers. The research is being conducted to verify the prominence of the native speaker as a role model in learning a foreign language. A questionnaire was used to find out from the students’ perspective the advantages and disadvantages of learning the language with a native teacher and a nonnative teacher. The results have helped to establish that there is no supremacy of one type of teacher, as they complement each other at different stages of the learning process
Can we refer to concepts like transition to describe how the collective mindset of teachers changed over time? Transition then would not refer to the biography of an individual but to the constitution of a social group. This kind of change might be explained by the concept of generations: People born at the same time make similar formative experiences, shaping their mindset in a specific way. When they join a so-cial group and replace older individuals, this may cause a significant change within the group. This kind of process might be called a transition. However, within a social group, an older generation usually is not collectively replaced by a younger. Replacement, in this context, rather is a continuous process and cannot be associated with distinct events that will occur with a predictable rhythm. Transition and simi-lar concepts, however, typically describe processes with a beginning and an end, and are associated with distinct events. Still, the concept of transitions might be applicable in the specific case of teaching staff and changes in its collective mindset. Although we might expect that the continuous replacement of older individuals by younger is what applies here, Nath et al. demonstrated that we often find a cyclic pattern with hiring and replacing teaching staff: At several points in history a great number of young teachers was hired within a short time span. Afterwards, vacant positions were rare, and little replacement took place until this group retired
Green-light photocleavable meso-methyl BODIPY building blocks for macromolecular chemistry
We report the design of easily accessible, photocleavable meso-methyl BODIPY monomers suitably functionalised for incorporation into macromolecules. Firstly a BODIPY-diol as a novel AA-type bifunctional monomer is reported. Secondly, from the same common BODIPY precursor, a clickable, azide functionalised AB-type hetero-bifunctional monomer was prepared. Photochemical studies of model compounds confirmed the ability of these compounds to undergo photocleavage in green light (lambda > 500 nm). Their usefulness for photoclippable macromolecular systems is then demonstrated: firstly by incorporating the diols into polyurethane hydrogels shown to undergo photocleavage and hence dissolution under visible light irradiation and secondly, the preparation of water-soluble macromolecular photocages able to photorelease small molecules. Thus the results presented herein describe a proof-of-principle for BODIPY-based photoresponsive materials, for example, for use as degradable polymers, sacrificial materials for lithography or for the delivery of caged pharmaceuticals

One of the goals was to find out what percentage of outbound group members from The sample of respondents meets the recommendations of studies and professional organizations regarding preventive vaccination and control of antibodies in selected diseases. 131 respondents took part in the questionnaire survey. Despite the high infectious risks in pre-hospital care, for example, all emergency medical staff were found to have very low vaccinations not only against the flu (6.11%), but also whooping cough or meningococci (7.63%). On the contrary, more than two thirds of respondents have checked measles virus antibodies and almost four-fifths of respondents recruited in emergency medical services before 1 January 2007 they are vaccinated against infectious hepatitis A
The Limits of EUropean Legitimacy : On Populism and Technocracy. Introduction to the Special Issue
This article introduces the special issue on populism and technocracy in the integration and governance of the European Union (EU), framing these opposing approaches in the context of polarised debate on the (il)legitimacy of the EU. The special issue was conceived as an interdisciplinary approach to questions of the EU’s legitimacy in the aftermath of structural crises (the eurozone, sovereign debt and the election and appointment of governing agents) and spontaneous crises (migration, external state and non-state security challenges, Brexit and Euroscepticism). Since the special issue’s conception the unanticipated Covid-19 pandemic, and responses from the EU and its member states (current and former) starkly illuminated debates on how the EU should operate, the limits of its power and the limits of its popular legitimacy. The era of passive consensus has been replaced by claims of legitimacy based on active expert-informed intervention, alongside populist claims of the EU’s inherent illegitimacy as an undemocratic technocracy. As such the special issue’s objective is to critically analyse manifold ways in which the populist-technocratic divide is narrated and performed in different regions, disciplines, and social and political systems in an era of growing internal and external challenges to the Union. We observe that the EU’s institutions remain highly adaptable in responding to challenges, but that member-states have continued and accelerated a tendency to nationalise success and Europeanise failure, with the EU acting as a perennial scapegoat largely due to the ease with which it can be narrated as a site of projection for mistrust, resentment, and social grievances. We argue that the relationship between populism and technocracy is rapidly evolving from an imagined binary into a much more fluid, overlapping, and reversible set of political narratives. We conclude that despite the changing nature of populist-technocratic debates and the resilience and adaptability of the EU, it faces accelerating challenges to its legitimacy in the new era of ‘politics of necessity’
The influence of decision-making in tree ring-based climate reconstructions
Tree-ring chronologies underpin the majority of annually-resolved reconstructions of Common Era climate. However, they are derived using different datasets and techniques, the ramifications of which have hitherto been little explored. Here, we report the results of a double-blind experiment that yielded 15 Northern Hemisphere summer temperature reconstructions from a common network of regional tree-ring width datasets. Taken together as an ensemble, the Common Era reconstruction mean correlates with instrumental temperatures from 1794–2016 CE at 0.79 (p < 0.001), reveals summer cooling in the years following large volcanic eruptions, and exhibits strong warming since the 1980s. Differing in their mean, variance, amplitude, sensitivity, and persistence, the ensemble members demonstrate the influence of subjectivity in the reconstruction process. We therefore recommend the routine use of ensemble reconstruction approaches to provide a more consensual picture of past climate variability
New Czechoslovak Hyphenation Patterns, Word Lists, and Workflow
Space- and time-effective segmentation and hyphenation of natural languages stay at the core of every document preparation system, web browser, or mobile rendering system. We use the unreasonable effectiveness of pattern generation with patgen. It is possible to use hyphenation patterns to solve the dictionary problem also for close languages without compromise. In this article, we show how we applied the marvelous effectiveness of patgen for the generation of the new Czechoslovak hyphenation patterns that cover both Czech and Slovak languages. We show that developing universal, up-to-date, high-coverage and high-generalization hyphenation patterns is feasible, generated from semi-automatically prepared word lists from actual language usage. We evaluate the new approach and argue that the new Czechoslovak hyphenation patterns bring significant coverage and generalization improvements, and space savings. We share all the data, word lists, and workflow for reproducibility and usage
Roots and Shoots : Building Bridges between Schools and Their Communities
The study analyses the benefits and challenges emerging from students’ interactions with community, teachers, and other students in the place-based education program Roots and Shoots, in the Slovak Republic. The study is based on qualitative analyses of data obtained from eight teachers and 56 students interviewed in eight focus groups, and on quantitative data obtained from 53 students. Both the students and the teachers perceived the Roots and Shoots program as highly successful. The implementation of the program was challenged by the necessity of dealing with different levels of the students’ participation in decision-making, tensions between the involved and uninvolved students, and the complex nature of local sustainability issues. This study discusses the importance of engaging students in the participative process of solving real-world issues, reflecting the challenges of this educational approach
