    No full text
The purpose of this work is to cover and analyze the episode of the African revolt of the year 238 that ended up being led by Gordian I and Gordian II, father and son, through primary sources and secondary literature, in order to study the origin and development of the uprising that would culminate in the death of its two protagonists, as well as trying to elucidate who these characters were. The discussion of some of the issues and details surrounding the aforementioned episode will constitute one of the fundamental pillars that will support this study, such as the extension, the chronology or the personality and importance that the sources attribute to the two ephemeral emperors.

Networking to reign and survive: Constantine V’s social strategies during iconomachy

    No full text
The aim of this paper is to investigate Constantine V’s social network and to find out the connections between him and his entourage. To this end, I compared the three primary sources (Cronographia of Theophaes, History of Patriarch Nikephoros and The life of Saint Stephen the Younger) on the political positions against Constantine V in order to discover what the emperor built after the reign of his father. On this purpose, I decided to use such sources because they are probably closer to the iconophile vulgata. Primary sources like these are interesting, but at the same very dangerous in the representation of the construction of a social network in this period, especially when they entail different literary genres (chronicle, history, hagiography).

    No full text
How does the myth of the suicidal writer address with precepts regarding motherhood? And how do Latin American suicidal writers dialogue with other Anglo-Saxon suicidal writers who are mothers (Plath and Sexton) or non-mothers (Woolf) in their effort to place their literary motherhood above the filiative one? This paper tunes into the call to be free from the tyranny of children within a regime where motherhood is placed at the center of the family (Meruane, 2015), and must be assimilated as the broader matrix from which to understand gender conflicts (Rich, 2010). Antonia Rivas Mercado receives the stigma of “social motherhood” (Vicuña, 2001) as the ultimate responsibility assigned to women within her moral constitution: tribulations that she exposes in her Diario de Bordeos (1930-1931). Later, Teresa Wilms Montt rebels in her Diarios íntimos (1906-1921) against the mandates of the genre. Her fourth diary will coincide with the re-encounter with her daughters, from whom she grew apart in her constant need to run away. Such an imperative of estrangement, common to both authors, finds resonance in Violeta Parra, whose life and death is re-interpreted in Violeta se fue a los cielos (2006), a biography in which her own son Ángel outlines a maternal ideal -frustrated and challenged- that he attributes to her: the omnipresence of an ancestral mother.¿Cómo el mito de la escritora suicida lidia con preceptos en torno a la maternidad?

    No full text
At the end of the last century, Tesis (1996, dir. Alejandro Amenábar,) became one of the highest-grossing movies in Spain. Some years later, [REC] (2007, dir. Paco Plaza and Jaume Balagueró) doubled that success and was among the most viewed films of its decade. This article suggests a correlation between both films based on the cinematic metadiscourse of each film’s plot. Specifically, it argues that the entry of Tesis’s protagonist in a video camera frame implies a fusion between reality and spectacle that is expanded in [REC] as a fake reality program. This preliminary idea allows a reading of both films in conversation with the concerns related to the society of the image at different moments in its evolution. The films under study include snuff movies, closed-circuit cameras, found footage, shooter videogames and faux TVdocumentaries in their narratives and aesthetics. Besides creating suspense, these elements lead to considerations about the role of the audiovisual in the contemporary age. This paper also examines Tesis’ dialogue with previous films where the ghostly takes center stage, and it analyses the contribution of the trope of the zombie in [REC]. All of it advances a discussion about how the technological evolution that links one film to the other, and their horror tropes depict political and social anxieties at the time, which are rooted in historical events.

This article analyses, based on a reinterpretation of Foucauldian notions of biopolitics (Foucault, Agamben, Esposito, Butler), the place of HIV/AIDS positive subjects in post-Franco Spanish democracy, covering the period from the late 1970s to the 1990s. In the first part of the article, it explores how the HIV/AIDS epidemic perpetuates transitional biopolitics by highlighting the differences between subjectivities considered worthy of value and those considered excess. The article proposes the notion of “gentrification of the mind” (Schulman) to describe the loss of imaginaries linked to the history of HIV/AIDS and the spaces frequented by these missing subjectivities. In the second part, through Eduardo Haro Ibars’ press articles published in “Cultura a la contra” and his poem “Madrugada, (las tres de la mañana)”, the disaffiliation experienced by certain individuals, including the author himself, with respect to the future of post-Franco Spanish democracy is examined. Subsequently, a cartography is presented of the marginal/symbolic and often subterranean spaces to which these subjects have been relegated (underground, sewers, saunas) as heterotopic spaces in which other imaginaries and other possible ways of life can be deployed.

    No full text
Present article considers the short story “Paladar” (La primera vez que vi un fanstama, 2020) by the Ecuadorian writer Solange Rodríguez Pappe and aims to analyze how food, the epicenter of the story, acts as the catalyst for the unusual, understood as contra-cultural dissidence as well as textual connotation. On the one hand, food coincides with the gap that exists between the concepts of visibility of the sign and invisibility of the ideological message that the sign transmits in the subculture (Hedbige 2004), and which is materialized in the anti-normative process which objects and practices considered trivial in the dominant culture undergo. On the other hand, the strangeness understood as the problematic ontological category attributed to Latin America is integrated with the unusual as a textual status. Finally, it will be analyzed how the fertile connection between food, body and strangeness is realized in the final image that alludes to cannibalism.

    No full text
This essay delves into the idea of interdependence, its origin, and the role it plays in the biographical comic book The Secret to Superhuman Strength (2021) by Alison Bechdel. According to the artist, this term not only unites Hinduism, Buddhism, escapist literature, transcendentalism, and counterculture, but also helps the author to put together all those personal milestones that ended up composing her own identity as an artist. By doing so, she might want to unveil the hidden truth that she strived so hard to conquer. However, this comic is about that quest and how similar is hers to that of preceding female authors who finally could not reach it. Amongst whom we can count, Margaret Fuller, Dorothy Coleridge, Betty Friedan, Judith Butler, Virginia Woolf; etc. With her panels, Bechdel vindicates the real importance and the obstacles before reaching the already mentioned interdependence for women artists, activists, explorers, etc., throughout her lifetime and, likewise, during the different feminist waves in the U.S. Concurrently, she is seeking to find that which brings her the superhuman strength.  The way she assumes that in sake of self-determinism she must rage against many restrictions imposed on women living in our western society. Bechdel uses some of those sources to highlight the role of the first intellectuals, their disagreements, and the ongoing values during her chronology. For this, intertextuality, or the dialogue between various texts in Bechdel’s, plays another central role to set women in the Emersonian ideal despite he had other plans for us.Este ensayo aprovecha la presencia del concepto interdependencia para analizar su origen y cómo se aplica en el cómic autobiográfico El Secreto de la Fuerza Sobrehumana (2021) de Alison Bechdel y en la práctica feminista.

    No full text
At the end of the 60s, Marvel comics had not yet embraced the modernity that was permeating the rest of artistic manifestations. At least that was the impression of versatile artist Jim Steranko. During his brief time at Marvel, he invented his own term, Zap-art, with which he tried, in a pioneering way, to enrich the language of comics with techniques from other artistic disciplines, always with the aim of reformulating the canon of the comics and the intention to entertain. This zap-art is masterfully condensed in the three issues he made for the Captain America collection, whose pages are full of advertising resources and borrowings of artistic styles such as symbolism and surrealism, which are analyzed in this article. Steranko's visionary achievements are recognized and applied today by artists as avant-garde as Tilly Walden or David Rubín.
