    Dr. Eleanor J. Smith was born in Circleville, Ohio, where she began her career as a public-school teacher. From 1972 to 1988, she was associated with the university of Cincinnati, first as a professor of Afro-American studies and later in a number of successively important administrative posts ending with her appointment as vice provost. A consultant to corporations, government agencies, municipalities, universities, colleges and public-school systems, Smith has lectured and written numerous articles about the history and experiences of African-Americans, particularly women. She was the founder and director of the Afrikan American Institute, Inc. and was co-founder and co-director of the National Association of Black Women Historians
