Education at IAMAS and the prerequisites
departmental bulletin pape
Persevere over “Learning”
Amidst the on-going shift from “education” to “learning”, university and academic institutions need to discern anew their societal roles. Community Radio as Cultural Function for the Amami Islands
The Japanese archipelago consists of 6,852 islands and about 421 are inhabited. I have studied on the relationship between the local community and community communication in small islands particularly focusing on local media since 2005.1 This article as a part of ongoing research reports the meanings of community radio station for the Amami islands, which consists of five islands. Since Amami FM was opened in Amami-ohshima in 2007, three new radio stations have signed off the air in the island. Other plans to open radio broadcasting also have been preparing in Tokunoshima and Okinoerabu. Through the in-depth interviews, it has been understood that each community radio station might be a symbol of own cultural identity and play as cultural function. The aggregation of these symbols is important for the whole islands for maintaining their own culture preserved for the long period of time when being occupied and oppressed by the mainland of Japan.departmental bulletin pape
