    Two major and two minor QTL for seedling and adult-plant resistance to Septoria tritici blotch (STB), caused by the fungus Zymoseptoria tritici (Z. tritici) were mapped. The two mayor QTL were located on chromosome 2B, the two minor QTL on chromosomes 1A and 7A, respectively and derived from the Tunisian durum wheat landrace accession ‘Agili39’. QTL were mapped in a recombinant inbred population, phenotyped for STB resistance using a wide array of isolates and genotyped using the high density DArTSeq platform

    Adoption of agronomic practices based on zero tillage and residue retention is increasing, due to their potential for climate change adaptation and mitigation. Genotype by tillage interactions for yield are not well understood. Fourteen CIMMYT bread (Triticum aestivum) and durum (Triticum turgidum) wheat genotypes, created between 1964 and 2011, were tested for yield and agronomic performance at CIMMYT’s experimental station near Ciudad Obregon, Mexico, over nine years (harvest years 2010 to 2018). Treatments included conventional and permanent raised beds with full and reduced irrigation. The dataset contains data on wheat performance (days to emergence, flowering and maturity, plant height, harvest index, grain yield, thousand grain weight, test weight, NDVI), performance traits calculated from these data (e.g. number of grains per m2, number of grains per spike, grain production rate from flowering to maturity) and daily weather data during the study period (precipitation, maximum and minimum temperature). This is an updated version of a dataset published in Honsdorf et al. (2018), where we have added three more years of data (harvest years 2016, 2017 and 2018) and one additional bread wheat genotype, Borlaug 100 (created in 2011) that was tested only in the six last years of the experiment (harvest years 2013 to 2018)

    Occupation, Earnings and Expenditure of the Daily Wage-based and Salaried Workforce in Farm and Nonfarm Sectors: Data from Bangladesh

    At present nearly half of the world’s population is under some form of government restriction to curb the spread of COVID-19, an extremely contagious disease. In Bangladesh, in the wake of five deaths and 48 infections from COVID-19, between March 24 and May 30, 2020 the government imposed a nationwide lockdown. While this lockdown restricted the spread of COVID-19, in the absence of effective support, it can generate severe food and nutrition insecurity for daily wage-based workers. Of the 61 million employed labor force in Bangladesh, nearly 35% of them are paid on a daily basis. This study examines the food security and welfare impacts of the COVID-19 induced lockdown on daily wage workers both in the farm and nonfarm sectors in Bangladesh. Using information from more than 50,000 respondents complied from 2016-17 Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) in Bangladesh, this study estimates daily wage rates as Bangladesh Taka (BDT) 272.2 in the farm sector and BDT 361.5 in the nonfarm sector. Using the estimated daily wages earnings, this study estimates that a one-day complete lockdown generates a US64.2millionequivalenteconomiclossonlyconsideringthewagelossofthedailywageworkers.Afterestimatingthedailypercapitafoodexpenditureseparatelyforfarmandnonfarmhouseholds,thisstudyestimatesaminimumcompensationpackageforthedailywagebasedfarmandnonfarmhouseholdsaroundUS64.2 million equivalent economic loss only considering the wage loss of the daily wage workers. After estimating the daily per capita food expenditure separately for farm and nonfarm households, this study estimates a minimum compensation package for the daily wage-based farm and nonfarm households around US 1 per day per household to ensure minimum food security for the daily wage-based worker households

    41st Elite Spring Wheat Yield Trial

    The Elite Spring Wheat Yield Trial (ESWYT) is a replicated yield trial that contains spring bread wheat (Triticum aestivum) germplasm adapted to Mega-environment 1 (ME1) which represents the optimally irrigated, low rainfall areas. Major stresses include leaf, stem and yellow rusts, Karnal bunt, and lodging. Representative areas include the Gangetic Valley (India), the Indus Valley (Pakistan), the Nile Valley (Egypt), irrigated river valleys in parts of China (e.g. Chengdu), and the Yaqui Valley (Mexico). This ME encompasses 36 million hectares spread primarily over Asia and Africa between 350S -350N latitudes. White (amber)-grained types are preferred by consumers of wheat in the vast majority of the areas. It is distributed to upto 200 locations and contains 50 entries

    Maize (Zea mays L.), the staple crop of Mexico, is often produced by smallholder farmers on sloping terrains. Historically, little agronomic research has been performed under the conditions of these farmers to support them in the sustainable intensification of their production systems. We set up trials at two locations in the state of Oaxaca to evaluate conservation agriculture and agroforestry in collaboration with local farmers. This dataset includes the data taken between 2015 and 2019 in the Santa Maria Teopoxco research platform and between 2014 and 2019 in the Tamazulapam del Espiritu Santo research platform, both located in the Mexican state of Oaxaca in the Pacífico Sur innovation hub. In both platforms the local conventional system was compared with 4 improved treatments. Improved treatments included zero tillage, residue management, liming, crop rotation and fertilization in different combinations. In both platforms these treatments were evaluated within a MIAF (Milpa Intercalada con Arboles Frutales) agroforestry arrangement. The MIAF system was implemented at both sites by planting rows of trees along the contour lines with a distance between rows of 10.6 m and between trees of 1 m in Tamazulapam (900 trees ha-1) and 2 m in Teopoxco (450 trees ha-1). Maize was sown on 60% of the area and 40% was under fruit trees. The database contains agronomic data (fertilization, density, tillage, residue management, plant spacing), yield data (grain yield of maize, squash and bean, fresh yield of peas, avocado and peach), plant development data (sowing, emergence, flowering, maturity and harvest, plant height, lodging) and economic data (production costs, gross margin and net profit)

    In sub-Saharan Africa, maize is a staple crop but yields remain sub-optimal. A novel hybrid seed technology offers the opportunity to reduce seed production costs and increase yields. This dataset contains data from on-farm and on-station trials collected in 2017 to 2019 in South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe to assess this hybrid seed production technology. The results of the analysis are presented in the accompanying article

    Replication Data for: Genome wide association mapping for heat tolerance in sub-tropical maize

    Heat tolerance is becoming increasingly important for maize grown in the spring season in India because heat stress can lead to devastating yield loss. The genotypic data provided in this dataset were used to carry out GWAS analyses on 662 doubled haploid lines to identify SNPs significantly associated with several traits under normal and heat stress conditions .Haplotype blocks associated with yield contributing traits were also identified. The genomic regions detected from these analyses will require further validation before being applied in breeding pipelines.
