Large on-farm trial data to assess the effect of additional irrigation on yields of wheat established through zero and conventional tillage methods in eastern India

    No full text
Lower yield of wheat in eastern India can be attributed to several input factors i.e., inappropriate crop management practices including other social and environmental factors. Among them, sub-optimal irrigation is one of the important factors. Recommended number of irrigations for optimal wheat harvest is 4-5 depending upon crop growth stages and availability of water. Observations by the project team and a recent survey conducted by CSISA at a landscape-level found that majority of farmers in this part of India apply 2-3 irrigations. Moreover, several studies have suggested to apply irrigation to wheat at its grain filling stage to protect the crop from terminal heat stress thereby safeguarding yield. To validate the effect of number of irrigations and irrigation at the grain-filling stage of wheat, multi-location on-farm trials were conducted continuously over six years starting from 2016-17. Krishi Vigyan Kendras, district-level extension center of national agriculture research and extension system were involved in this process. Ten districts were selected in a way that all agro-climatic zones of this area are covered. The treatment in this trial was application of additional irrigation at maturity/grain-filling stage of wheat crop against general farmer practice. Number of irrigations with farmers vary from 1 to 4, so our treatments included 1+1, 2+1, 3+1, and 4+1 irrigations. We applied these treatments in two sets of wheat crop establishment i.e., zero-tillage and conventional tillage methods. There is asymmetry in distribution of samples within treatments and over years. That happened as trial was in farmer’s participatory mode and numbers were dependent completely on willingness of farmers to participate. Altogether, the trial was conducted at 1810 sites, and we captured 63 variables including yield and yield attributing traits

    54th International Durum Yield Nursery

    No full text
International Durum Yield Nurseries (IDYN) are replicated yield trials designed to measure the yield potential and adaptation of superior CIMMYT-bred spring durum wheat germplasm that have been developed from tests conducted under irrigation and induced stressed cropping conditions in northwest Mexico. These materials have been subjected to numerous diseases (leaf, stem and yellow rust; Septoria tritici blotch) and varied growing environments. It is distributed to 70 locations, and contains 50 entries

Sustainability, productivity, profitability and nutritional diversity of six cropping systems under conservation agriculture: A long term study in eastern India

    No full text
CONTEXT: Intensive cropping and elevated input use to achieve high crop yields have resulted in the injudicious use of resources and a consequent reduction in profit margins for farmers in the Eastern Gangetic Plains (EGP) region of South Asia. In this region rice-wheat (RW) under conventional tillage (CT) management is the most widely cultivated cropping system. While conservation agriculture (CA)-based management practices have been demonstrated to improve cropping system performance, they are considered by many farmers to be risky, and adoption of CA in rice-based cropping systems is low. There has been little agronomic research into alternative cropping systems to develop diversification options appropriate for the EGP. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that shifting from a conventional RW system to crop establishment practices which incorporate CA principles, combined with alternative crops could improve the whole cropping system in terms of productivity, profitability, and nutritional security (as crop protein)

Data on scoping study for laser land levelling services in the rice-wheat cropping systems of western Nepal

The data comes from a survey designed to understand the scope of LLL services in four districts of Mid- and Far-western developmental regions of Nepal Terai that are part of the IGB and have the potential to scale-up LLL. Samples were collected from the districts Banke, Bardiya, Kailali and Kanchanpur. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Nepal, led the data collection in 2015. From each district, sub-districts (Village Developmental Committees, or VDCs) were purposively selected from Cereal Systems Initiatives for South Asia (CSISA) project (https://csisa.org/) working areas. The project was operational in 10 VDCs. The sampling strategy consisted of 50 percent of samples randomly selected from the list within CSISA project area and 50 percent of samples randomly selected beyond the CSISA project areas from the same VDCs. From each VDC, 40 sample households were selected randomly, resulting in an overall sample of 400 households (40 households from 10 sub-districts of four districts). An additional six samples were collected from one of the districts due to a higher proportion of rice-wheat systems in that district, bringing the overall sample size to 406

Dataset on rhizosphere microbiota and yield of maize and barley in a field experiment with six seed treatments in the Central Highlands of Mexico

    No full text
Six seed treatments were tested for 2 growing cycles (summer of 2021 and 2022) in a field experiment with maize (Zea mays L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) under conservation agriculture in the Mexican highlands, at CIMMYT’s experiment station of El Batán Texcoco, the State of Mexico, Mexico. The experiment was a randomized complete block design with 3 replicates, with separate areas for maize and barley. The six seed treatments included a negative control, a chemical seed treatment (different for maize and barley, depending on common practices in the area), Trichoderma, Metarhizium, a commercial mixture of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria, and a combination of Trichoderma and Metarhizium. Soil and root samples were taken at two and three sampling times during the 2021 crop cycle for barley and maize, respectively. Yield and yield components were determined at the end of the crop cycle in 2021 and 2022. The soil and root samples were used to measure root growth (root biomass per core), root colonization with mycorrhizal fungi, root infection with pathogens (Polymyxa, Pythium, Microdochium), soil microbial communities in terms of biomarker fatty acids, and ecological guilds of soil nematodes (Bacterivores, fungivores, plant parasitic and predators)
