Influencia del empaque en el comportamiento de compra de frijoles rojos cocidos enteros
Este estudio tuvo como objetivo evaluar la aceptación del empaque y las preferencias de los consumidores sobre los frijoles rojos cocidos enteros en las zonas de Comayagua y Tegucigalpa en Honduras. La metodología empleada consistió en la recopilación de datos a través de una encuesta estructurada, que busco explorar la satisfacción de consumidores sobre el empaque, la etiqueta, el producto y su disposición de compra. Los resultados mostraron que la mayoría de los encuestados prefieren los frijoles cocidos enteros (82%) sobre los molidos, destacando la importancia de atributos sensoriales como el sabor, olor, color y textura en su decisión de compra. El empaque tipo bolsa vertical con un lado transparente fue altamente aceptado, y la información en la etiqueta (como fecha de caducidad e ingredientes) también se valoró positivamente. Los consumidores mostraron disposición a pagar más por productos con empaque de mejor calidad, especialmente por frijoles en presentación de una libra. En conclusión, los atributos sensoriales, el diseño funcional y estético del empaque, y la información clara en las etiquetas juegan un papel crucial en las decisiones de compra, lo que sugiere oportunidades para las PYMES en la introducción de productos a un mercado premium.19 page
Biofactories: new models for production and access to agricultural inputs in Latin America
The production and access to alternatives to chemical agricultural inputs are key issues today. In Latin America, solutions to these challenges (see Perspectives 55, May 2021) are becoming available thanks to the rise of biological inputs – including biofertilizers, biocontrol agents and biostimulants - resulting from many years of public investment in research and development, and a significant industrial drive in developing technologies based on micro-organisms, macro-organisms or plant extracts. However, the sector is taking a different route from the traditional agri-supply channels: NGOs, farmer networks, public policies and even some private stakeholders are encouraging the production of bio-inputs in bio-factories, directly on farms or in community facilities in rural areas. While these biofactories open up new prospects, they also face major challenges.1–
Effects of pearling on proximate composition, dough rheology, bread-making quality and health-promoting components of elite wheat cultivars
Though the health benefits of whole wheat products have been widely recognized, their less desirable processing qualities limited consumers’ acceptance. Thus, it is imperative to develop processing techniques for balanced nutritional and processing qualities. In this study, we investigated impacts of two grain pearling (debranning) levels on proximate composition, dough rheological properties, food-making quality, arabinoxylans (AXs), alkylresorcinols (ARs) and phenolic acids composition of two elite bread wheat cultivars. Pearled flour (PF) of Zhongmai 175 retained very good dough extensibility (190.7–195.5 mm), while PF of Zhongmai 578 retained medium-to-strong gluten strength and acceptable bread-making quality. Compared to whole wheat flour, PF preserved major portion of the health-promoting components in wheat grains, i.e., 71.4–94.0 % for water-extractable AXs, 68.1–86.3 % for total AXs, 71.4–92.7 % for alkylresorcinols, 85.5–98.9 % for soluble ferulic acid and 67.3–83.3 % for insoluble-bound ferulic acid. Further investigation is needed to understand the effects of different kernel sizes and debranning rates on nutritional profiles of pearled grains. Taken together, our results suggested that grain pearling can be used to produce wheat products with balanced nutritional and processing quality for improved human health
Does “swapping” maize (Zea mays L.) inbred parents affect hybrid grain yield? - a seed production research case study
Maize (Zea mays L.) is a globally important crop, thriving across diverse environments. Breeding maize inbreds with good combining ability for stable yields under both optimal and stress-prone conditions has been successful. However, to achieve commercial success and impact, seed producibility factors which include female and male parent flowering synchronization and seed parent yield, need to be considered in the early stages of the hybrid development process. In this study, hybrids and their reciprocals were compared through a paired T-test to ascertain if F1 performance would be affected by switching (swapping) the roles of the seed and pollen parents. While significant differences were found for grain yield, anthesis days, anthesis silking interval, plant height, ear height, and the number of ears per plant for each group of hybrids and reciprocal crosses, no significant differences were found for hybrids vs. the reciprocals for all of the traits evaluated. This indicated that swapping the roles of female and male parents in successful hybrid combinations does not affect hybrid performance
Integrated business model for bio-fortified rice and diversified crops in Bangladesh
This brief shows TAFSSA’s (Transforming Agri-food System in South Asia) market linkage activities for biofortified rice and diversified crops in different districts which were selected as the learning landscape location in Bangladesh. It also highlighted how TAFSSA is working to expand and develop integrated market systems for biofortified rice and diversified crops. It may help researchers and policymakers develop future activities on diversified crop expansion in Bangladesh.16 page

Maize seed aid and seed systems development: Opportunities for synergies in Uganda
In the name of food security, governments and NGOs purchase large volumes of maize seed in non-relief situations to provide at reduced or no cost to producers. At the same time, efforts to build formal maize seed systems have been frustrated by slow turnover rates – the dominance of older seed products in the market over newer, higher performing ones. Under certain conditions, governments and NGO seed aid purchases can support formal seed systems development in three ways: i) support increased producer awareness of new products, ii) support local private seed industry development, and iii) advance equity goals by targeting aid to the most vulnerable of producers who lack the capacity to purchase seeds. This study explores the objectives and activities of seed aid programmes in Uganda and their interactions with the maize seed sector. We draw insights from interviews with representatives of seed companies, NGOs and government agencies, as well as focus group discussions with producers. The findings indicated that seed aid programme objectives are largely disconnected from broader seed systems development goals. There is little evidence of public-private collaboration in design of these programmes. Better designed programs have the potential to align with varietal turnover objectives, commercial sector development and targeting of underserved markets could promote equity and ‘crowd in’ demand.37-4
TAFSSA stakeholder mapping: The agricultural market system and value chain in Bangladesh
The network map presented here provides a high-level view of the stakeholder network within the agriculture market systems in Bangladesh. This is part of an effort to understand the networks at work within Bangladesh’s agricultural food system, encompassing integrated production, marketing, nutrition and climate subsystems. The lead question for this mapping exercise is: Who are the primary organizations, institutions and individuals in the public and private sectors that influence the sale and movement of crops, livestock and aquaculture products from farm to plate in Bangladesh? The following analysis uncovers the broader patterns of the drivers, barriers and gaps within the sub-system network, informing potential stakeholder interventions to bring about desired changes in the agrifood systems. Also, it will look into the fact that what can make better this network to achieve the expected result in terms of ensuring food security involving all the actors in their specific roles.18 page
The wheat sucrose synthase gene TaSus1 is a determinant of grain number per spike
Some haplotypes of the sucrose synthase gene TaSus1 are associated with thousand-grain weight (TGW) in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). However, no mutations have been identified within the gene to test this association. The effects of TaSus1 on grain number per spike (GNS) also are largely unknown. Our previous genome-wide association study identified TaSus-A1 as a candidate gene controlling fertile spikelet number per spike (FSN). In the present study, we generated two independent mutants for the three TaSus1 homoeologs by CRISPR/Cas9-mediated genome editing. The triple mutants displayed lower FSN, GNS, grain number per spikelet (GNST), and TGW than wild-type plants. In 306 hexaploid wheat accessions, two single-nucleotide polymorphisms in TaSus-A1 contributed differently to GNS. Introgression of the two alleles into a wheat genetic background confirmed their effects. The alleles differed in geographical distribution among the accessions.295-30
