    Ultra Low-Power Analog Median Filters

    Get PDF
The design and implementation of three analog median filter topologies, whose transistors operate in the deep weak-inversion region, is described. The first topology is a differential pairs array, in which drain currents are driven into two nodes in a differential fashion, while the second topology is based on a wide range OTA, which is used to maximize the dynamic range. Finally, the third topology uses three range-extended OTAs. The proposed weak-inversion filters were designed and fabricated in ON Semiconductor 0.5 µm technology through MOSIS. Experimental results of three-input fabricated prototypes for all three topologies are shown, with power consumptions of 90 nW in the first case, and 270 nW in the other two cases. A dual power supply ±1.5 Volts was used

Fabrication and characterization of a micro-fuel cell made of metallized PMMA

    Get PDF
In this work we purpose the fabrication and characterization of a micro-fuel cell prototype based on the low mass density polymer poly(methyl-methacrylate) (PMMA), having low aspect ratio micro-channels, which were superficially metallized via sputter deposition technique. For current collector and anticorrosion coatings we employed different high electrical conductivity materials such as copper, molybdenum and gold. Metallic coatings were physically and chemically characterized by using scanning electron microscopy for the topographical analysis, X-ray diffraction for the structural analysis and energy dispersive spectroscopy for composition analysis. The electrical and electrochemical parameters obtained for the prototype cell were: a mean open circuit potential of 855 mV, a maximum electrical power density of 73 ̣μW cm¯² at 182 μA cm¯² and 380 mV

Approximations for Large Deflection of a Cantilever Beam under a Terminal Follower Force and Nonlinear Pendulum

    Get PDF
In theoretical mechanics field, solution methods for nonlinear differential equations are very important because many problems are modelled using such equations. In particular, large deflection of a cantilever beam under a terminal follower force and nonlinear pendulum problem can be described by the same nonlinear differential equation. Therefore, in this work, we propose some approximate solutions for both problems using nonlinearities distribution homotopy perturbation method, homotopy perturbation method, and combinations with Laplace-Padé posttreatment. We will show the high accuracy of the proposed cantilever solutions, which are in good agreement with other reported solutions. Finally, for the pendulum case, the proposed approximation was useful to predict, accurately, the period for an angle up to 179.99999999º yielding a relative error of 0.01222747

A dynamic Bayesian network for estimating the risk of falls from real gait data

    Get PDF
Pathological and age-related changes may affect an individual’s gait, in turn raising the risk of falls. In elderly, falls are common and may eventuate in severe injuries, long-term disabilities, and even death. Thus, there is interest in estimating the risk of falls from gait analysis. Estimation of the risk of falls requires consideration of the longitudinal evolution of different variables derived from human gait. Bayesian networks are probabilistic models which graphically express dependencies among variables. Dynamic Bayesian networks (DBNs) are a type of BN adequate for modeling the dynamics of the statistical dependencies in a set of variables. In this work, a DBN model incorporates gait derived variables to predict the risk of falls in elderly within 6 months subsequent to gait assessment. Two DBNs were developed; the first (DBN1; expert-guided) was built using gait variables identified by domain experts, whereas the second (DBN2; strictly com- putational) was constructed utilizing gait variables picked out by a feature selection algorithm. The effectiveness of the second model to predict falls in the 6 months following assessment is 72.22 %. These results are encouraging and supply evidence regarding the usefulness of dynamic probabilistic models in the prediction of falls from patho- logical gait

Equivalence between mirror-field-atom and ion-laser interactions

    Get PDF
We show that the interaction between a movable mirror with a quantized field that interacts with a two-level atom may be simplified via a transformation that involves Susskind-Glogower operators (SGO). By using this transformation it is easy to show that we can cast the Hamiltonian, after a unitary transformation, into a Hamiltonian that is equivalent to the ion-laser Hamiltonian. We would like to stress that the transformation in terms of SGO already simplifies enough the Hamiltonian in the sense that, in an exact way, it “eliminates” one of the three-subsystems, namely the quantized field

Amorphous silicon-liquid crystals device forphotonic applications

    Get PDF
We demonstrate that an hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a:SiH)-liquid crystals hybrid device could be used for the recording of high resolution (0.8-2 µm) dynamic holograms. A maximum diffraction efficiency of 3.3% was obtained at low power (1.5 mW) He-Ne laser. The nonlinear refractive index change at 0.6 W/cm2 is n2~1x10−2 cm2 /W, although small compared to that obtained in dye-doped liquid crystal, is equal to the reported in pure liquid crystal although with much higher power density (~50 W/cm2 ). The device operates in the red to near-infrared part of the spectrum which makes it attractive due to its potential applications in telecommunications and military applications

A photonic crystal realization of a phase driven two-level atom

    Get PDF
We propose a set of photonic crystals that realize a nonlinear quantum Rabi model equivalent to a two-level system driven by the phase of a quantized electromagnetic field. The crystals are exactly solvable in the weak-coupling regime; their dispersion relation is discrete and the system is diagonalized by normal modes similar to a dressed state basis. In the strong-coupling regime, we use perturbation theory and find that the dispersion relation is continuous. We give the normal modes of the crystal in terms of continued fractions that are valid for any given parameter set. We show that these photonic crystals allow state reconstruction in the form of coherent oscillations in the weak-coupling regime. In the strong-coupling regime, the general case allows at most partial reconstruction of single waveguide input states, and non-symmetric coherent oscillations that show partial state reconstruction of particular phase-controlled states

Lattice algebra approach to multispectral analysis of ancient documents

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a lattice algebra procedure that can be used for the multispectral analysis of historical documents and artworks. Assuming the presence of linearly mixed spectral pixels captured in a multispectral scene, the proposed method computes the scaled min- and max-lattice associative memories to determine the purest pixels that best represent the spectra of single pigments. The estimation of fractional proportions of pure spectra at each image pixel is used to build pigment abundance maps that can be used for subsequent restoration of damaged parts. Application examples include multispectral images acquired from the Archimedes Palimpsest and a Mexican pre-Hispanic codex. © 2013 OpticalSociety of Americ

Dust around NEarby Stars. The survey observational results

Context. Debris discs are a consequence of the planet formation process and constitute the fingerprints of planetesimal systems. Their solar system counterparts are the asteroid and Edgeworth-Kuiper belts. Aims. The DUNES survey aims at detecting extra-solar analogues to the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt around solar-type stars, putting in this way the Solar system into context. The survey allow sus to address some questions related to the prevalence and properties of planetesimal systems. Methods. We used Herschel/PACS to observe a sample of nearby FGK stars. Data at 100 and 160 μm were obtained, complemented in some cases with observations at 70 μm, and at 250, 350 and 500 μm using SPIRE. The observing strategy was to integrate as deep as possible at 100 μm to detect the stellar photosphere. Results. Debris discs have been detected at a fractional luminosity level down to several times that of the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt. The incidence rate of discs around the DUNES stars is increased from a rate of ∼12.1% ± 5% before Herschel to ∼20.2% ± 2%. A significant fraction (∼52%) of the discs are resolved, which represents an enormous step ahead from the previously known resolved discs. Some stars are associated with faint far-IR excesses attributed to a new class of cold discs. Although it cannot be excluded that these excesses are produced by coincidental alignment of background galaxies, statistical arguments suggest that at least some of them are true debris discs. Some discs display peculiar SEDs with spectral indexes in the 70–160 μm range steeper than the Rayleigh-Jeans one. An analysis of the debris disc parameters suggests that a decrease might exist of the mean black body radius from the F-type to the K-type stars. In addition, a weak trend is suggested for a correlation of disc sizes and an anticorrelation of disc temperatures with the stellar age

Alignment in star-debris disc systems seen by Herschel

    Get PDF
Many nearby main-sequence stars have been searched for debris using the far-infrared Herschel satellite, within the DEBRIS, DUNES and Guaranteed-Time Key Projects. We discuss here 11 stars of spectral types A to M where the stellar inclination is known and can be compared to that of the spatially-resolved dust belts. The discsare found to be well aligned with the stellar equators, as in the case of the Sun’s Kuiper belt, and unlike many close-in planets seen in transit surveys. The ensemble of stars here can be fitted with a star-disc tilt of ≲10º. These results suggest that proposed mechanisms for tilting the star or disc in fact operate rarely. A few systems also host imaged planets, whose orbits at tens of AU are aligned with the debris discs, contrary to what might be expected in models where external perturbers induce tilts
