Studying the formation and evolution of massive galaxies towards protoclusters using millimetre observations
In this thesis we study the spatial distribution of extremely luminous high-redshift
dust-enshrouded star-forming submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) towards the environments
of 16 powerful high-redshift radio galaxies and a quasar (AGN) using
continuum observations at 1.1 mm taken with the AzTEC camera. This AGN
sample represents a subset of the ongoing AzTEC Cluster Environment Survey
(ACES). We target powerful high-redshift AGN, using them as signposts of protoclusters,
since under the ΛCDM scenario these early structures are formed in
the highest density regions of the Universe.
The number of ACES targets and the increased area covered by each AzTEC
map of our protocluster sample allows us to examine the surface density (number
counts) of SMGs towards these regions with greater significance than previous
studies. We estimate the integrated number counts for the fields of individual
ACES targets, but in the majority of cases the density of sources with S1.1mm > 4
mJy falls within the 95% confidence interval of the density of sources in a comparison
sample of unbiased blank fields. Only in the surroundings of 4C+23.56,
PKS1138-262 and MRC0355-037 do we detect individual overdensity signals of
∼ 2 with a significance of ∼ 3δ. When we perform a stacking analysis on the
complete sample of AzTEC maps, we also find an overdensity of ∼ 2, with greater
statistical significance, covering an area of 3-arcmin diameter centred on the AGN
(corresponding to a co-moving diameter of 1.7-7.5 Mpc over the redshift range
0.5 < z < 6.3 of the sample). This is in good agreement with the analysis of
previous studies. In addition, the large size of our maps allows us to establish
that beyond a radius of 1.5 arcmin, the radial surface density of SMGs falls very
quickly to reach a typical value for a blank field distribution of SMGs. The measured
angular extent of this overdensity is in agreement with estimates of the
virial radii of local clusters
The present work proposes a 3D reconstruction model of transparent objects
based on optical reflectometry. This model is based on the laws of reflection to
obtain the topography. The model proposed in this work is aimed at the correction
of various factors, how to observe the specular surface of transparent objects.
Being fundamental phase unwrapping without constraint on the method used.
One variant of this model are the various techniques of obtaining the object as the
method of Takeda and Phase-Shifting. And also, how to optimize the model by
building Graphical User Interface (GUI) in MATLAB ®. To complete the research work
we performed the following methodological steps:
We reviewed the literature of reconstruction methods based on reflection turn
stripes following the principles of reflectometry and deflectometry, highlighting some
names like Song Zhang, Markus C. and O. Skydan.
It solved analytically, the proposed model reduced to a system of partial differential
equations of hyperbolic type. And parameters were integrated in order to
understand and manipulate experimentally.
Was programmed image processing algorithm for 3D reconstruction calculations
transparent objects by Reflectometry of a Ronchi-type reference pattern. Later
model achieved satisfactory results, which were optimized with the construction of a
graphical user interface (GUI), which allows the capture of parameters and images
to graphically display the results of the reconstruction of three-dimensional profile of the transparent object.
Finally, we present experimental results which corroborate our proposal.
In this thesis, we worked on emotion recognition from the speech signal. To address this problem, we have adopted a psychological continuous emotions model. With this emotion model, emotions are studied in a broader sense of what has been done traditionally. It has been thoroughly explored the acoustic feature space on realistic scenarios. We applied soft computing and probabilistic techniques for estimating emotional states. This work contributes to the understanding of speech elements that help to determine the emotions and to create a pattern recognition method based on a continuous emotional model suitable for spontaneous emotions detection. We experimented with various types of acoustic and linguistic features, including new features used in other fields. We had used feature selection techniques to find the most important ones. In addition, we have studied the importance of these attributes on multilingual data, we propose a method for representing emotional states based on fuzzy clustering and studied the prediction of emotional states based on context. The results obtained in the estimation of emotion primitives and classification of basic emotions using our feature set and methods are comparable with the best results in the state of the art.
Construction of an image shape transformer
The construction is reported in this paper of an image shape transformer with optical components and commercial devices presently available. The corresponding theory of the shape transformer can be consulted in previous works.
Due mainly to the small dimensions of the transformer, of a few millimeters, many problems were found and resolved. We think it is useful to summarize this experience in this document, so, practical problems related with the optics, alignment, mechanics and mountings along the construction of the transformer are described in the next sections
The impact of acoustic losses on the optical transmission function of an acousto-optical filter
New physical aspects of collinear acousto-optical interaction, occurred by acoustic waves of finite amplitude, are revealed and analyzed in crystalline materials exhibiting moderate linear acoustic losses. The analysis is performed in the regime of continuous traveling waves allowing specific mechanism of the acousto-optic nonlinearity. Our consideration has shown that such nonlinearity together with linear acoustic losses is able to affect the transmission function inherent in collinear interaction. In particular, the mere presence of linear acoustic losses by themselves leads to broadening the width of transmission function beginning already from very low levels of the applied acoustic power. Moreover, the transmission function exhibits a marked and quasi-periodical dependence on the applied acoustic power density; and that periodicity is governed by the linear acoustic losses. As a result, the transmission function can be significantly narrowed near isolated points at the cost of decreasing the interaction efficiency. These novelties related to collinear acousto-optical interaction accompanied by moderate linear acoustic losses have been studied and confirmed experimentally with an advanced acousto-optical cell based on calcium molybdate (CaMoO4 ) single crystal and controlled by acoustic waves of finite amplitude
Introduction. One way to monitor the efficacy of therapies in bone disease is by digitally subtracting two images, one taken before starting treatment and the other after completing it. This article describes a method based on a more practical photographic process, which does not require as much care in taking x-rays. The graphs illustrate what is happening with bone density, so that the evolution of the disease can be rapidly inferred.
Material and methods. The x-rays and mammograms analyzed were obtained from a patient with breast cancer and metastasis in the humeral head of the right shoulder. To show the efficacy of the method, the humeral head and the surgical neck were analyzed. The time interval between the first and second x-rays was one year and for the mammograms the difference was 6 months.
Effects of speckle/pixel size ratio on temporal and spatial speckle-contrast analysis of dynamic scattering systems: Implications for measurements of blood-flow dynamics
Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI) is an optical technique used to generate blood flow maps with high spatial and temporal resolution. It is well known that in LSCI, the speckle size must exceed the Nyquist criterion to maximize the speckle's pattern contrast. In this work, we study experimentally the effect of speckle-pixel size ratio not only in dynamic speckle contrast, but also on the calculation of the relative flow speed for temporal and spatial analysis. Our data suggest that the temporal LSCI algorithm is more accurate at assessing the relative changes in flow speed than the spatial algorithm
α Centauri A in the far infrared*: First measurement of the temperature minimum of a star other than the Sun
Context. Chromospheres and coronae are common phenomena on solar-type stars. Understanding the energy transfer to these heatedatmospheric layers requires direct access to the relevant empirical data. Study of these structures has, by and large, been limited to theSun thus far.
Aims. The region of the temperature reversal can be directly observed only in the far infrared and submillimetre spectral regime. Weaim at determining the characteristics of the atmosphere in the region of the temperature minimum of the solar sister star α Cen A. Asa bonus this will also provide a detailed mapping of the spectral energy distribution, i.e. knowledge that is crucial when searching forfaint, Kuiper belt-like dust emission around other stars.
Methods. For the nearby binary system α Cen, stellar parameters are known with high accuracy from measurements. For the basicmodel parameters Teff, log g and [Fe/H], we interpolate stellar model atmospheres in the grid of Gaia/PHOENIX and compute the corresponding model for the G2V star α Cen A. Comparison with photometric measurements shows excellent agreement between observed photospheric data in the optical and infrared. For longer wavelengths, the modelled spectral energy distribution is compared to Spitzer-MIPS, Herschel-PACS, Herschel-SPIRE, and APEX-LABOCA photometry. A specifically tailored Uppsala model based on the MARCS code and extending further in wavelength is used to gauge the emission characteristics of α CenA in the far infared.
Results. Similar to the Sun, the far infrared (FIR) emission of α CenA originates in the minimum temperature region above the stellar photosphere in the visible. However, in comparison with the solar case, the FIR photosphere of α CenA appears marginally cooler, Tmin~T160μm = 3920±375 K. Beyond the minimum near 160 μm, the brightness temperatures increase, and this radiation very likely originates in warmer regions of the chromosphere of α Cen A.
Conclusions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a temperature minimum has been directly measured on a main-sequencestar other than the Sun
