    No full text

The impact of the ambient gas density on the evolution of supernova remnants

    Get PDF
This thesis presents a theoretical discussion of the full evolution of Supernova Remnants (SNRs), that includes the thermalization of the SN ejecta, the Sedov-Taylor and Snowplough stages of the SNR evolution. Our aim is to study how such evolution proceeds for different values of the ambient gas density. A fast numerical method based on the Thin-Shell approximation is developed. The ejecta density and velocity configurations are included in order to study the ejecta-dominated (ED) or thermalization phase, and the transition to the Sedov-Taylor (ST) stage. The numerical scheme also includes radiative cooling. The calculations show that for low-density models, the remnants follow the classical evolutionary tracks with a negligible amount of energy radiated from the shocked ejecta gas and are in excellent agreement with the literature. For high-density models, strong radiative cooling, both from the shocked ejecta and shocked ambient gas, leads the SNRs to evolve without reaching the ST stage. A critical ambient gas density is obtained. For densities higher than this critical value, the evolution differs significantly from the standard theory. In such cases, the remnants become radiative when the thermalization of the ejecta mass has not been concluded. Thus, the ambient density is an essential parameter on the evolution of SNRs

Unrelenting growth in digital comunications, multimedia and others consumers products in recent years has traslated into incrasing demands for Analog to Digital Converters (ADCs) of 8-10 bits resolutions and sample rates in excess of 100 MHz. This work shows a 10 bits 1GS/s current mode Folding ADC design in transistor level. This approach is due to voltage mode issues as limited riel supply and the high power consumption in high resolutions (10 bits). The ADC quantizer is based in Winner Take All and comparators and interpolated stage is not required in the present work as do the voltaje mode ADCs. The statics (DNL & INL), and the dynamics characterizations (SNR & ENOB) was done as well as layout development was made using CADENCE Virtuoso, DRC, LVS and paraitic extractions was also perform.

Robotic motion path generation method based on homotopy continuation for multidimensional workspaces

Motion planning is the process that every autonomous agent (robot arm, mobile robot, video game avatar, molecular model, among others) must develop, this consists on calculating a sequence of movements that represent the continuous displacement from an initial position to a goal position. In principle, path planning is a purely geometric procedure in which an autonomous robot must find a collision-free path without considering dynamics and other differential constrains. The present work is devoted to formulating a planner algorithm based on homotopy continuation methods which can deal with most important issues present in robotic motion planning. These issues are; a) workspace model type and number of dimension representation, b) large number of obstacles, c) narrow corridors, d) memory and computing time spend and e) completeness. Furthermore, an additional topic is treated; multiple-goal planning for multidimensional configuration spaces with static obstacles. The main contributions of the present thesis are; first, a multidimensional technique to enhance the convergence of spherical tracking and correct the reversal phenomenon, named double spherical racking (DST). Second, an automatic criterion to assign the repulsion parameter for obstacles in the homotopic path planning method (HPPM) for any 2D workspace is proposed. Third, HPPM is reformulated by using a piecewise linear approach in order to generate a multiple-goal planner. This variation also is used to perform problems in multidimensional workspace (from two to five dimensions). Fourth, four workspace representations for HPPM: i) Algebraic models for multidimensional space by using mathematical representations closed curves and surfaces, ii) Polygonal and polyhedral models, iii) Non-convex polygons and iv) Bitmaps by using piecewise linear approach (in this work only apply for 2D problems) are characterized. The effectiveness of our proposed planner to obtain feasible paths for sceneries with issues, restrictions and workspace models mentioned previously are validated by using numerical simulations. The performance of the proposed homotopic planner is compared with the most employed sampling based planner algorithms (SBP) for the metrics: execution time, length of path, percentage of successful runs and memory consumption. The results of the cases of study show that the homotopic planner is the best option to implement on embedded system with limited resources (processor and memory)

The connection between jets and host galaxies of radio loud AGN: Blazars vs NLSy1s

    No full text
This doctoral dissertation discuss the main properties of the host galaxies of those active galactic nuclei (AGN) capable of generating strong relativistic jets (and therefore, capable of emitting up to the γ−ray energy ranges) and with their jets pointing very close to the line of sight, namely; blazars (including flat spectrum radio quasars [FSRQ] and BL Lac objects [BL Lac]) and narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLSy1s). Our aim is to identify galaxy properties that might influence its AGN and vice versa. Despite the progress on AGN research and important results such as the correlation found between the spheroid (elliptical galaxies or bulges in disc galaxies) properties and its central super massive black hole mass (which suggests a link between evolutionary processes of the galaxy and its black hole and hence, a likely relation between the host galaxy and its AGN) the relation between the jet that some AGN are capable to launch and its black hole remains unclear, although it is essential for the understanding of the energy release mechanisms and AGN evolution. Motivated by this, in this thesis work I take advantage of Nordical Optical Telescope (NOT) near infrared (nir) imagery and perform a homogeneous and systematic structural modeling of a sample of radio–loud AGN with prominent relativistic jets and redshifts 0.3 < z < 1.0 and also, compile host galaxy and nuclear magnitudes for radio–loud AGN from literature. The combined sample (our analysis and the compilation) contains 100 radio-loud AGN with host galaxy detections and a broad range of radio luminosities L1.4GHz ∼ 1023.7 − 1023.7W Hz−1 , allowing us to divide our blazars sample into high-luminosity blazars (HLBs) and low-luminosity blazars (LLBs). The main results of this part of the thesis was published in Olguin-Iglesias et al. (2016) where We found that the host galaxies of our sample are bright and seem to follow the µe − Reff relation for ellipticals and bulges (Kormendy relation). The two populations of blazars show different behaviors in the Mnuc −Mbulge plane, a statistically significant correlation is observed for HLBs and a constant Mbulge for the whole range of Mnuc of LLB. As shown by previous studies, we find that both blazar types are hosted by massive red elliptical galaxies; the so called, jet paradigm

A Geospatial Web App For The Visualization And Analysis Of Coastal Erosion Using Remote Sensing Satellite Imagery And Geographic information Systems

The internet is a valuable tool to communicate and share information on coastal regions. Nonetheless as it is understood, we haven’t gotten to the point where these tools take full advantage of current “Web 2.0” technologies. The capacity of these tools that promote remote information sharing and collaboration are at present not fully exploited applied to coastal erosion management, furthermore these tools are in constant development and are rapidly advancing. For data or information to be useful for coastal management, it must be both comprehensive and accessible. The present research for a web geospatial infrastructure for visualization of coastal erosion addresses Two issues: i) simple access to data and ii) access to information in timely fashion; for anyone involved in the management of coastal areas, these issues represent a strong challenge. The research proposes that a third-party online access tool needs to be developed and be of easy access for data visualization and retrieval so that the data and information available can help in decision-making. This online web infrastructure takes into consideration that the available data is at present not easily accessed by anyone that does not have an academic degree nor wide experience in the use of spatial data hence that particular person has difficulty in understanding and consume the information contained in such data. Earth observation (EO) systems are vital for the assessment and mitigation of the negative effects humanity is having on the environment; because EO tools and products can be used to explore and exploit new opportunities in the sustainable management of natural resources. The goal of this research is to promote the design and implementation of an automated web infrastructure using geographic information systems to analyze remotely sensed coastal imagery and with this, pave the way to generating temporal crust deformation models that can be displayed and published through the internet, making all the data and information accessible to the general public

A study on FET devices based on Schottky barrier and metal-gate/high-k stacked thin-films

Nowadays fabrication of semiconductor devices with ultra-small features enables increasing the performance of these devices by exploiting the physical properties of the materials processed at those nanoscale dimensions. In particular, MOSFET transistors of Schottky-Barrier (SB-MOSFET) show a better performance compared to conventional planar MOSFET because of the many advantages given by replacing Source/Drain (S/D) diffusions by metal electrodes. Among these advantages are low parasitic S/D resistance, low-temperature processing for S/D formation, elimination of parasitic bipolar action, and inherent physical scalability to sub 10nm gate-length dimensions, which is due to the low resistance of metal and the atomically abrupt junctions formed at the metal-silicon interface. All of these advantages enable an increase in the performance of the transistors like obtaining a smaller sub-threshold slope (SS) compared to conventional MOSFET devices. In this work a study of Schottky barrier Metal Oxide Semiconductor Effect Transistor (SB MOSFET) is presented, which stars with CAD simulations (fabrication process, performance and electrical characteristics modeling), the current mask layout, the complete process of fabrication until the genera characterization for materials and final devices. First of all, a study of different substrate surfaces is provided in order to ensure their thermal and chemical stability and, thus, to obtain a proper metal-semiconductor interface passivation (from a FTIR analysis). Then, a physical and electrical characterization of metal is provided in order to identify the best option to serve as S/D/G (Source/Drain/Gate) electrodes at the transistor fabrication. Later, Metal-semiconductor junctions are fabricated and characterized in order to guarantee rectifier junctions, this by the Schottky barrier height modulation; which was crucial for the fabrication and proper operation of the SB-MOSFET transistors. Then, two process of fabrication are provided (they were limited to a maximum processing temperature of 250°C and 100°C respectively), as well as the respective structures and they are correlated to the main parameters obtained from SB-MOSFET transistor. Finally, transport mechanisms involved in the operation of structures that form the transistor are analyzed and discussed as well as CAD simulations are provided in order to explain the ON/OFF operation of the SB MOSFET.En la actualidad la fabricación de dispositivos semiconductores con dimensiones nanométricas ha permitido un mejoramiento en el desempeño de dichos dispositivos, extrapolando las propiedades físicas de los materiales procesados a dimensiones del orden de nanómetros.

Pilot cases for the analysis of debris disks at infrared and millimeter wavelengths

Debris disks are the late stage of circumstellar disk evolution and may also be evidence of planetary formation. These circumstellar objects are composed of dust, which is the result of collisions between planetesimals orbiting a mature star, and are analogs of the Kuiper belt in our Solar system. Debris disks are detected as a photometric excess, above the expected photospheric value of their host star, which is caused by the thermal emission of the circumstellar dust. This work presents different approaches to the study of the properties of debris disks and is a collection of the publications produced from these analyses. First, I review the results of publications on Herschel/PACS debris disks around solar-like stars to provide a context for my findings. As a first step into working with Herschel observations, I perform a thorough analysis on the reduction of Herschel/ PACS data using HIPE with the goal of finding the optimal values to extract as much information as possible from barely spatially resolved sources. I analyze the barely resolved debris disk around HIP 544, a target of the Herschel Key Programs DUNES and DEBRIS. I begin with the construction of a geometrical model to obtain the extension of the disk and follow with SED modeling using powerlaws to describe the disk surface brightness and the dust sizes. The dust and disk properties indicate that HIP 544 has a transport dominated debris disk. These types of disks lose material by transport mechanisms rather than by collisions. This analysis is a pilot case for a large scale study of all debris disks resolved with Herschel. Afterwards, I present the deepest single-dish image of the debris disk around Ɛ Eridani obtained with the 1.1 mm continuum camera (AzTEC) on the LMT. The whole ring-shaped disk was detected for the first time and, contrary to previous publications from other authors, we did not find statistically significant evidence of clumps in the disk. We suggest that the previously detected inhomogeneities were due to background contamination. Additionally, we find significant emission in the inner parts of the system and it may be interpreted as evidence of Poynting-Robertson drag.
