Indigenization Policies and Cooptation Strategies of Multinationals: Case of Indonesia

    Get PDF
Examining the effectiveness of developing countries' indigenization policies toward the affiliates of multinational corporations (MNCs), this paper finds that the policies in general have some success in encourging local partners' participation in affiliate management. However, the difference in bargaining source and power among Pribumi, Non-Pribumi, and government partners generates different behavioral patterns and the MNCs' responses. The more partners possess legitimate business resources, the more indigenization takes place, while the stronger their political bargaining power, the more MNCs exercise informal cooptation strategies. Thus, the policies face clear limitations for partners with less business resources.departmental bulletin pape

On the Significance of Collocations in Vocabulary and Language Teaching

    Get PDF
The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of collocation, and at the same time to give new recognition of the teaching of vocabulary. Considering the burden upon learners to learn vocabulary, I believe that learning words in collocation ( for example, eikyo o ataeru, kaoi ocha, kanousei ga takai, and gussuri neru) is most effective and time-saving. I shall propose to eatablish paradigmatic sets which will contribute to the systematic method of teaching words in collocations.conference pape

On the Aquisition of the Adverb "Yappari" and the Particle "Ne"

    Get PDF
In this paper we have analyzed the role of the adverb "yappari" and the particle "ne" both of which are frequently used in conversational Japanese. We hypothesized that "yappari" and "ne" have the function of "in-group identity markers" and raise the politeness of the sentence. A survey wa cirulated and answered by 123 Japanese students and 75 learners of Japanese. The procedure of this study was follows: 1) establish 5 categories of personal relationships and corresponding levels of politeness used. 2) measure the degree of politeness used in "expression of request." 3) establish the correlation between a particular expression of request and a corresponding level of politeness. 4) carry out the same analysis for expressions with "yappari" and "ne". 5) compare the results of the analysis of "expressions of requests" with the analysis of "expressions with 'yappari' and 'ne'." Hypothesis testing and Spearman's rank correlation analysis verified our proposition. The comparison of expressions suggests that the acquisition of the politeness function of "yappari" and "ne" is particularly dificult for the learner of Japanese.conference pape

    Get PDF
There is a wide gap between "teacher talk" and "ordinary Japanese (non-teachers)." many learners are faced with various troubles in communicating with the latter. Against this background, I conducted this research which aims at investigating communication problems faced by learners and native speakers when they tried to communicate each other, and strategies taken by both sides to pvercome these problems. This time, I specially focused on "Cooperative conversation skills." The following are used as data : (1) Tapes which recorded communication between learners and native speakers. (2)Interviews with native speakers. (3) Questionnaires of learners and native speakers.conference pape
