Ins and Outs of the Long-Run Unemployment Dynamics
Get PDFThis paper studies the contribution of inflow and outflow rates to the unemployment dynamics in the long-run. I find that in the U.S., both inflow and outflow rates contribute significantly to variation in the long-run trend of the unemployment rate. The two themes conflict because local adaptation tends to value independence of local operations while global integration strives for concerted efforts for scale andscope economies. The conflicting nature of the two themes gets drastically intensified when developed economy MNCs enter emerging markets due to the vast difference between developed and emerging economies. The new conceptual framework proposed in this paper is based on Giddens' structuration theory and constructs a co-evolutionary perspective for managing the two themes. Exports and economic growth in Indonesia's fishery sub-sector: Cointegration and error-correction models
Get PDFThis paper investigates the causal relationship between fishery's exports and its economic growth in Indonesia by utilizing cointegration and error-correction models. Using annual data from 1969 to 2005, we find the evidence that there exist the long-run relationship as well as bi-directional causality between exports and economic growth in Indonesia's fishery sub-sector. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first research that examine this issue focusing on a natural resource based industry, and the results shed light on the role of agriculture sector for economic growth in the developing countries.departmental bulletin pape
Unemployment and Labor Force Participation in Japan

By using cointegration analysis, we demonstrate that there exists a long-run relationship between the two variables for male workers but not for female workers. I incorporate productivity enhancing firm-specific skill training into the search and matching model of Pissarides (2000). Developmental Network in the Japanese Traditional Entertainment Industry
Get PDFThis research clarifies the multiple relationships maintained by "geiko" (Kyoto dialect for geisha) and "maiko" ("geisha"-in-training) as they develop into service professionals who are highly skilled at entertaining customers. Their multiple and strong relationships are embedded in a developmental network within the geisha districts (called "hanamachi") in Kyoto. We found maiko's careers are integrated within the larger geisha's community, and in the course of acquiring work experience maiko develop their skills within a network of designated interpersonal relationships that also include customers. Productivity Growth, On-the-Job Search, and Unemployment
Get PDFThis paper studies the impact of long-run productivity growth on job finding and separation rates, and thus the unemployment rate, using a search and matching model. We incorporate disembodied technological progress and on-the-job search into the endogenous job separation model of Mortensen and Pissarides (1994). The incorporation of on-the-job search allows faster growth to reduce unemployment by decreasing the separation rate and inducing job creation. We demonstrate that introducing on-the-job search substantially improves the ability of the Mortensen and Pissarides model to explain the impact of growth on unemployment. Our quantitative analysis shows that our model increases the magnitude of the negative impact of growth on unemployment compared to the standard matching model with disembodied technological progress.departmental bulletin pape
