The Relationship between Extensive Reading and TOEIC Score Gains
Get PDFapplication/pdfExtensive reading programmes are a common aspect of many language courses. The effectiveness of extensive reading has been established, but existing studies on its link to reading score gains on a popular test in Japan, the Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC), have shown mixed results. This study uses quiz data from the website MReader, a common tool used to track students’ extensive reading progress, to analyse the link between extensive reading and TOEIC through total words read, regularity of reading, and comprehension. 105 students’ MReader data from four cohorts of reading class students was correlated with TOEIC reading section gains after 10 months of the programme. Small but statistically significant relationships were found between total words read, average quiz scores, and TOEIC reading score gains. The authors suggest that these results support the effectiveness of extensive reading for increasing TOEIC reading scores, but more research is needed.多読プログラムは多くの語学授業において用いられている。多読の効果はすでに実証されているが，日本で人気のあるTOEICのリーディングセクションのスコア増加との関連性についての研究では，様々な結果が報告されている。本研究では，学習者の学習状況が追跡できるウェブサイトとして広く利用されているMReaderのクイズデータを用い，読んだ本の単語総数，多読の頻度，内容理解という点から多読とTOEICの関連性について分析する。過去4年間でリーディングの授業を受けた総数105名の学生のMReaderデータを，多読プログラム開始10か月後のTOEICリーディングセクションのスコアと突き合わせた。わずかではあるが，単語数，クイズの平均点，TOEICのリーディングスコア増加の間に統計的に有意な関連性が確認できた。これらの結果は，多読がTOEICのリーディングスコア増加に繋がるという効果を裏付けるものではあるが，よりさらなる研究が必要である。departmental bulletin pape

Get PDFapplication/pdf本研究の目的は、攻撃的ユーモアのポジティブな対人的機能を実験的に検討することであった。独立変数は相手との親密度（高、低）と攻撃的ユーモアの攻撃度（高、低、統制条件）であり、統制条件はユーモアを含まない発話を設定した。従属変数は、攻撃的ユーモアを言われた際の、相手への対人認知、肯定的感情、否定的感情、関係継続意思の4つであった。実験参加者に、親密度と攻撃的ユーモアの攻撃度が操作された6種類のシナリオの1つを無作為に配布し、従属変数の測定を行った。その結果、攻撃的ユーモアはその攻撃度の高低に関わらず、否定的感情を生起させた。攻撃度が高いユーモアは、対人認知を悪くし、関係継続意思を低めた。相手との親密度が低い場合に、攻撃度が高い攻撃的ユーモアは、肯定的感情を抑制した。相手との親密度が高い場合で、攻撃度が低い攻撃的ユーモアに限り、肯定的感情を生起させるというポジティブな対人的機能が示された。journal articl
