According to Ambiguity − ambivalence hypothesis (Wang, 2008), it is suggested that the priority cue and the secondary cue are used for decision making in risky choices, and that verbal framing effect in risky choices will appear when decision making using the priority cue is not accomplished. This study examined which of perceived fairness and perceived rationality was predominant as the priority cue, and examined verbal framing effect in the live-or-death problem which Mai et al. (2020) used. 139 students completed one of four problems varied with Sure/Risky and Positive/Negative. Perceived rationality was predominant over perceived fairness as the priority cue in decision making. Verbal framing effect did not appear. The relation between perceived rationality and perceived fairness was considered by comparing to the relation between justice and fairness in philosophy.journal articl
Identifying Words Difficult for Japanese EFL Learners to Acquire by a Revised Vocabulary Estimation Test
application/pdfThe study examines the Japanese EFL learners'vocabulary at the 1,000- to 6,000-word levels, using my revised vocabulary estimation test (hereafter VET). The study also examines the rank correlation in the success rate. The data are analyzed according to participants' grades and schools. The study attempts to identify words difficult to acquire even for advanced learners (university sophomores). Results show that the average vocabulary of students is much smaller than previously estimated by existing estimation tools. There is a statistically significant difference in the mean vocabulary size among students according to their grades and their schools. There is a relatively or rather strong rank correlation between grades and between schools in the success rate in answering at each level with few exceptions. There are four words whose success rates are less than 50 percent even at the 1,000-word level even fordepartmental bulletin pape

The EF SET English Assessment at Hiroshima Bunkyo University
application/pdfThis report gives an overview of a five-year trial of the computer-adaptive English First Standard English Test (EF SET). The trial was originally conducted among small groups of first year Global Communication Department (GC) Writing Strategies (WS) course students and has since moved on to include Education Department (ED) Writing Strategies course students, the majority of second year General English (GE) course students from all departments, and third year International Communication Strategies (ICS) course Global Communication Department students at Hiroshima Bunkyo University. This free, online assessment provides students with a Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) aligned results certificate and claims correlation with both the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). It was hoped that this free, low stakes, i-Pad friendly assessment could be used to improve generally foreign language test-averse, non-English major students' awareness of the CEFR and their overall level within it, encourage continued study and learning throughout their four years of university, and provide external evidence of students' overall English progress. It was also considered as one way of checking the effectiveness and validity of our own in-house streaming and progress / achievement measuring Bunkyo English Test (BET). The EF SET’s methods of administration, effectiveness in achieving these goals, and future feasibility and implementation possibilities will all be discussed.departmental bulletin pape
