    Exploring Canadian Dietitians’ Knowledge Attitude and Practices Providing Culturally Safe Care to Muslims who fast During the Month of Ramadan: A Cross-sectional Study

    Fasting during Ramadan involves abstaining from food and drink from dawn to dusk for 29 to 30 days, annually. Dietitians, experts in food and nutrition, play a vital role in fostering the well-being of Canadians. Given that 1 in 20 Canadians are Muslim, access to culturally safe care is essential for their health. The consumption of adequate nutrients during the non-fasting hours is important for Muslims well-being. It is unknown whether dietitians in Canada feel comfortable and knowledgeable providing safe care during Ramadan. An online survey, was developed using the World Health Organization’s Knowledge Attitude and Practice Protocol, and then reviewed for content validity by 6 dietitians. From March 5, 2023 to April 1, 2023, 159 Canadian dietitians, from a variety of practice areas including acute care, community health, and private practice, completed the online survey. Descriptive statistics, cross tabulations, and chi-square tests, enhanced by post hoc analyses with Bonferroni correction, were employed to determine any relationship between categorical variables and identify significant associations or differences. While most participants demonstrated an adequate understanding of Ramadan fasting practices, including its duration and restrictions, 91% reported not receiving information on how to provide culturally safe care during their university degree. Many dietitians expressed discomfort providing care (43.7%, 69/158) and lacked adequate resources (51.3%, 81/158). Among the 37% of dietitians who did offer care to Muslims (58/157), the majority felt comfortable (72.1%, 44/58).     Sequence-based Identification of Polyamine Oxidase Genes in Sorghum bicolor L.

    Polyamine oxidase (PAOs) are enzymes associated with polyamine catabolism and play important roles in growth and development and stress tolerance of plants. In the present study, genome-wide discovery and analysis of the PAO family in sorghum was done utilizing model PAO of Arabidopsis. Six PAO genes were found using publicly available genomic data. Sorghum has the PAO gene representatives distributed throughout four chromosomes (chr1, 3, 6, and 7), and most members have 8 to 9 exons. The molecular weights of PAO proteins range from 53 to 63 kDa. PAO proteins have a theoretical PI between 5.2 and 8.1. What began as a student volunteer position with the OLA Super Conference has evolved into a path that parallels and catalyzes my career growth. As I reflect on my path as a librarian in academic libraries, both college and university, I can see how each association role has built upon the last, creating a foundation for both professional and personal growth

    The MacKenzie Mountains, Northwest Territories, Earthquake Sequence of 1953 to 1957

    The northern Canadian Cordillera is a region of intense, poorly understood seismicity. Between 1953 and 1957, five moderate to large earthquakes (M=5.8-6.4) struck the remote northern MacKenzie Mountains. We utilize historical seismograms, felt reports and other information to define the epicentres, focal depths, magnitudes, and focal mechanisms of this previously unstudied earthquake sequence. The 1953 and 1955 earthquakes were felt (up to intensity V) to distances of 230-280 km. Magnitudes (Mw) were determined at 6.3 and 6.4, respectively. Epicentres were relocated using path corrections obtained from well-recorded modern earthquakes (M=4.5-5) in this region. The relocated epicentres are distributed in an ESE-WNW direction over ~45 km. The 1955 mainshock and largest aftershock are separated by ~20 km, with the aftershock located NNE of the mainshock. The 1957 (M=5.8) earthquake is located a similar distance and direction from the 1956 (M=6.1) earthquake, suggesting that it may be an aftershock of that event. Focal mechanisms and depths were determined using body wave modelling. Depths ranged from 9-15 km, and focal mechanisms show thrust faulting along either a NNE-plane or a SSW-dipping plane. The orientation of the ESE-WNW striking nodal plane is consistent with the distribution of epicentres and the regional geology. The NNE-SSW striking, shallow-dipping P-axes are consistent with the regional stress field. This study reveals numerous similarities with the 1985-1988 Nahanni earthquake sequence, including shallow, thrust faulting, earthquakes over several years, and likely caused by stresses transmitted from the plate boundary (700+ km to the west), activating favourably oriented thrust faults.The presentation of the authors' names and (or) special characters in the title of the pdf file of the accepted manuscript may differ slightly from what is displayed on the item page.     Time-dependent interaction coefficients to quantify the settlement of energy pile groups

    The use of energy piles is facing an exponential growth due to the increasing need of exploiting sustainable energy sources. Their design implies the estimation of the displacement induced by the combined thermo-mechanical interaction between piles belonging to the same group. In this regard, the work at hand derives sets of interaction coefficients for piles subjected to thermal load in not stationary conditions, using finite difference numerical analyses. These involved pile pairs embedded in different soil types at multiple spacing, namely 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 times the pile diameter. A new dimensionless parameter is also introduced to describe the evolution with time of the interaction coefficients accounting for pile-to-pile spacing, soil thermal diffusivity, pile-soil stiffness ratio and time. The numerical results demonstrate a strict time-dependence of the interaction coefficients that is worthy to be considered in the design practice. To this aim a practice-oriented approach is proposed allowing to evaluate the interaction effects and thereby derive the settlement of each pile in a straightforward manner. This requires as only ingredient the settlement of the isolated energy pile at the considered time instant.     Analysis of VRTN, NR6A1 and LTBP2 gene polymorphisms in Lijiang pigs and their association with the number of thoracic vertebrae

    To explore the polymorphisms of the VRTN, NR6A1, and LTBP2 genes and their association with thoracic vertebrae count in Lijiang pigs, genotyping these genes’ exons and the VRTN promoter region was conducted in 205 individuals. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Sanger sequencing were used for this purpose. Genotype and allele frequencies of the identified variants were calculated, and their associations with thoracic vertebrae count were analyzed. A total of eight missense mutations and one insertion mutation were identified. Moderate polymorphism was detected in VRTN (g.97622607G>A, g.97623006G>A, g.97623046C>T), NR6A1 (g.265347265T>C), and LTBP2 (SSC7:97765472C>G), while VRTN (g.976158896_976158897ins291) and LTBP2 (SSC7:97770379T>C) showed low polymorphism.     Effects of daylong exposure to indoor overheating on enterocyte damage and inflammatory responses in older adults: A randomized crossover trial

    We evaluated enterocyte damage (IFABP), microbial translocation (sCD14), and inflammatory responses (TNF-α, IL-6, CRP) in 16 older adults (66-78 years) during 8 hours rest in conditions simulating homes maintained at 22°C (control), the 26°C indoor temperature upper limit proposed by health agencies, and homes without air-conditioning during heatwaves (31°C, 36°C).     Forest fuel structure and loading along a gradient of gray-phase mountain pine beetle severity in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

    Wildland fire fuels within the gray-phase of mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) outbreak (4 – 10 years post mortality) are treated as homogenous despite potential variability. To assess if proportion of mortality due to mountain pine beetle in gray-phase stands significantly affects fuel structure, composition, and loading, detailed fuel measurements were collected across a range of severity in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada, by coincidence 1 – 3 years before a major wildfire.     Dose-response Relationship between Leisure-time Physical Activity and Metabolic Syndrome in Short Sleep US Adults: Evidence from a Nationwide Investigation

    Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and short sleep are prevalent health concerns in the United States, yet the relationship between leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) and MetS among individuals with short sleep duration remains unclear. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from 8999 US adults aged 20 years and older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Short sleep duration was defined as less than 7 hours per night, and MetS was diagnosed based on criteria from the American Endocrine Society and the American Society of Clinical Endocrinology. Weighted regression analyses revealed a significant inverse association between LTPA and MetS, with higher LTPA levels linked to lower MetS [OR (95% CI): 0.990 (0.984, 0.997), p = 0.003]. Participants who achieved the World Health Organization's recommended LTPA levels had a substantially lower MetS compared to those with no LTPA [OR (95% CI): 0.624 (0.527, 0.738), p = 0.001]. Stratified analyses showed that this protective effect varied across demographic subgroups, and a threshold effect was observed at 2000 MET-minutes per week, beyond which further LTPA did not significantly enhance protection against MetS.     Scattering off a junction

    Scattering off a potential is a fundamental problem in quantum physics. It has been studied extensively with amplitudes derived for various potentials. In this article, we explore a setting with no potentials, where scattering occurs off a junction where many wires meet. We study this problem using a tight-binding discretization of a star graph geometry – one incoming wire and M outgoing wires intersecting at a point. An incoming wave arrives at the junction and scatters. One part is reflected along the same wire while the rest is transmitted along the others. Remarkably, the reflectance increases monotonically with M, i.e., the greater the number of outgoing channels, the more the particle bounces back. In the M→∞ limit, the wave is entirely reflected back along the incoming wire. We rationalize this observation by establishing a quantitative mapping between a junction and an on-site potential. To each junction, we assign an equivalent potential that produces the same reflectance. As the number of wires (M) increases, the equivalent potential also increases. A recent article by one of us has drawn an equivalence between junctions and potentials from the point of view of bound state formation. Our results here show that the same equivalence also holds for scattering amplitudes. We verify our analytic results by simulating wavepacket motion through a junction. We extend the wavepacket approach to two dimensions where analytic solutions cannot be found. An incoming wave travels on a sheet and scatters off a point where many sheets intersect. As in the one-dimensional problem, we assign an equivalent potential to a junction. However, unlike in 1D, the equivalent potential is momentum-dependent. Nevertheless, for any given momentum, the equivalent potential grows monotonically with the number of intersecting sheets.
