    Get PDF
The promotion of the incorporation of citizen participation in the public politics starts, in many cases, from an argument based in a spatial metaphor, according to which the aim would be to “approach” the State to the citizens. The article discusses the usefulness of such a metaphor, for it leads to a normative or evaluative analysis that prevents an understanding of the way in which the participation modifies the bond established between the public institutions and the citizens. Considering the case of the city of Buenos Aires, the distancing is analysed not as a metaphor, but as a myth; and the inclusion of participation is studied as a practice that tends to demystify the government.

This paper studies the links among history, memory and subjectivity in an Argentine documentary: M of Nicolás Prividera. It analyzes the tour of the protagonist who tries to reconstruct the history of his mother disappeared during the last military Argentine dictatorship. This tour is constituted in critical memory since it supposes an active search of fragments of the past, as an interpellation to others in this search. This exercise of critical memory is the one that enables the subject to present and future actions. The film demonstrates the labor that the new generations realize with the incomplete legacy that they received because of traumatic situations. This work deals with the “memory places” as a privileged space of construction of collective memories in Latin American societies affected by dictatorships or inner armed conflicts. This is exposed through three different types of memory places: “testimonial sites”; monuments, museums and memorials; and local, decentralized, performative practices of inscribing the memories in the public space. These are analyzed regarding issues such as the actors, addressees, contents and means involved in each case. In the context of what some authors call the “globalization of memory” the question about the existence of a specific Latinamerican language of memory is posed.

In Chile, in spite of the last eighteen years of democracy, there are still shadows of the dictatorial past. Duel of the painful past hasn’t been yet accomplished, and contradictory and antagonistic memories are still playing a crucial role in society and politics. An example of this can be found in the historical commemorations of September the 11th, in the polemic debates generated around the memorials of outstanding left and right characters, and in the antagonistic interpretations surrounding one of the most emblematic officers of the dictatorial government, Miguel Krassnoff, as shown in two recently published booksA pesar de los años transcurridos en democracia, en Chile siguen persistiendo las sombras del pasado dictatorial.

This work is an effort to build the collective memory of president Cárdenas through the social speech of different actors. The main hypothesis points out that there is a myth in relation to him which has to do with an heroic image. It is about a human being with superhuman traits. The image is analyzed on the bases of a political and symbolic referent. It is a political myth, which contributed to consolidate the nation state and the mexican political system. Two perspectives can be derived from this analysis: one which deals with the politician with a long range view. The other has to do with the man who always was trying to improve the levels of social justice and the aspirations of the poorest. Different values are associated with the memory of Cárdenas: paternalism, assistentialism, social justice and nation sovereignty.
