1. The precedents of research, proposition  
 
The results of the century-old Árpád Tóth reception concern a 
well-defined and therefore limited layer of his oeuvre. Studies 
are considered exceptional if the subject of examination is not 
the following: Körúti hajnal, Esti sugárkoszorú, Lélektől 
lélekig, Elégia egy rekettyebokorhoz. A reduced image is 
arisen with identifiable elements such as melancholy mood of 
impressionism, one-dimensional thematics and the vibrant 
effect of synaesthesia.   
 
On the basis of this methodology a poetics crystallise, which 
mainly can be linked only to the work of Juhász Gyula, and 
besides the French symbolists cannot be interpreted 
connecting to any other previous oeuvres. This one-sidedness 
is naturally avoiding the world of short stories and describes a 
circle, which keeps resulting in biographical studies. With the 
exception of the first monograph (Demeter Alice, 1932) all 
collective works are biographical motivated, consequently the 
research of texts is not the result of an autonomic 
interpretation. Therefore one of the mayor objective of this  
paper is the interpretative reveal of the oeuvre. 
The other fundamental point of the dissertation is the 
validation of the concept of identity in analytical practice. The 
identity theories seem to agree in two directions in the 
scientific  system. On the one hand based on Erikson oeuvre – 
looking from the perspective of psychology – usable 
definitions are available respecting the process of ego 
evolution, however, this literary projection found interest in a 
much narrower field (gender, minority, sexual orientation) On 
the other hand - mainly due to the work of Ricoeur – the 
identification processes on the level of narrative prose seem to 
be identifiable and just this decade launched these criteria 
analysis of the lyrical texts (Oszkár Boros, Sarolta

Osztroluczky, Antal Bókay, Katalin Szitár, Kornélia Horváth). 
These interpretive essays keep remaining at the particular 
oeuvre presentation of certain texts.  
 
The objectives of my dissertation are twofold: on the one hand 
I strived to widen the highly constricted Árpád Tóth reception 
based on both a quantitative and a conceptual approach. The 
fundamental analytical aspects of the 4-5 canonized lyrical 
works, traditionally highlighted from the oeuvre, so far have 
focused on Impressionism and formal virtuosity, and ignored 
the contextual embeddedness of language use and the presence 
of short stories. 
 
2. Research methodology, the structure of my dissertation 
 
The first chapter of my dissertation examined the orientations 
of identity theories, providing a theoretical basis and 
formulating criticism of the shortcomings to the literary 
interpretations of this topic. I have started out at the basic texts 
of psychology (Carven and Gergen) and expanded the scope of 
research to essays in relation with the psychology of art, such 
as the texts of Ricœur, Danto and McAdams. 
 
The detailed description of the Árpád Tóth reception also drew 
my attention to several phrasing-theoretical issues. 
Impressionism, the initial validity of one-sidedness terms 
(Karinthy, Babits), then their fixedness after the completion of 
the oeuvre became a source of many problems. Not only did I 
compared and contrasted critical texts of this issue, but also 
highlighted in subsequent analyses how unproven or narrow in 
scope certain theses are in their nature. 
 
In the third unit I discussed the identity searching moments of 
the lyric texts, in which I stated that in addition to the thematic 
issues, imaging and stylistic procedures, along with rhythmic

in several texts show traits related to the demand of self-
defining. In the selection of the texts I did not stick to the 
established literary tradition, but rather chose texts that are less 
known and characteristically show the poetic and work-
psychological traits chosen to be the direction of the research. 
I validated four of the possible identification factors in this 
chapter: the role of God, the decisive role of the geographical 
space, the impact of philosophy and the inspirational power of 
the arts, artists. In order to avoid the risk of moving away from 
the text, I tried not to formulate general truths, instead I have 
given space for the statements regarding the given language 
material all the time. The result of the research shows that 
there is one text that shows a consistent self-image, Isten oltó-
kése, the attempts of other texts end in failure, the resistance of 
language bears witness to unstable self-definition. 
 
The fourth chapter brings the text analysis of eight short 
stories by Árpád Tóth, referring to the general features of the 
texts, but always preserving the text-centered reading 
technique. Since these small epic works are almost entirely 
unknown to the profession, I validated several factors (the start 
of the story, the effect of the use of records and verbalism on 
poetics) during the research, providing a basis for a possible 
series of interpretations in the future. I tried not to prove that 
these prose texts were equal with the works of great novelists 
of the era (Kosztolányi, Babits, Móricz), but my goal was to 
elevate this text group from complete obscurity. 
 
For the sake of completeness an annex is inserted to the end of 
my dissertation representing the brief description of the three 
missing short stories. 
 
At the beginning and end of the unit dealing with short stories 
– due to the absence of reception, moving away from the

thesis methodology – I provide summary, in which I sum up 
the features of lessons of the general prose texts and specific 
characteristics. 
The last chapter summarizes – building on mainly the 
reception (Bóka, Fűzfa, Láng, Szentesi) – the connection of 
the canonical texts with identity language-themed appearance.  
 
3. New results 
 
In some of the examined lyrical works use (Berzsenyi, Ady 
Endrének, Isten törött csellója) imaging (metaphor, 
metonymy) other texts rithmical structures (Hej Debrecen), 
other elements use concealment (Prospero szigetén, Utókúra) 
to form a self, to construct a consistent self-image. 
 
The effect of Bergson philosophy - previously connected with 
Babits -  can be more clearly linked to Árpád Tóth (A test 
csodája, Az ősök ritmusa) and – previously treated like 
evidence – instead of the direction lyrical loneliness, 
Berzsenyi-Arany-Ady-Pilinszky line to language 
characteristics is outlining, in which Toth Arpad also can be 
inserted.  
 
This thesis put new light on the technics of Toth Árpád's rithm 
making– leading to the poets of Nyugat - encouraging theorists 
to re-examine the level of iambic maturity - 75% accordance) 
(Krisztus-képre; Isten törött csellója, hallgatok). According to 
my research only one text can be highlighted from Árpád 
Tóth's work, which shows us a consistent self image: Isten 
oltó-kése, the attempts of other texts fail, the resistance of 
language demonstrates an unstable self definition.

Non of the short stories can be inserted to the archetype 
system of Frye, which gave new clarity to the universal 
considered categorisation. Tóth Árpád's prose writing enters 
into a dialogue with Umberto Eco and Jack Goody writings, 
showing the devastating nature of language in short stories.

1. Aim of the dissertation 
 
The dissertation was written in the hope of being able to find new viewpoints to 
approach the historia litteraria part of Peter Bod’s oeuvre based on manuscripts and to 
pronounce some new realizations that has been unsaid so far. The special literature on Peter 
Bod’s oeuvre from a literary historian approach is vast, however the writings are full of 
repetitions and contradictions, and are not up-to-date. On the contrary, the author’s work has 
been analyzed warmly from a (church) historical interest in the last two decades, however, the 
literary historian and critical approach has not, or not sufficiently adopted these new results. We 
intended to incorporate the findings of related studies to the dissertation so as to understand the 
literary historically relevant parts of Bod’s work more completely.  
We regarded all works, writings, letters, fragments written by Peter Bod in connection 
with old scholars and their work or with phenomena or events of litteraria to come under the 
scope of historia litteraria program. This means that we studied not only Magyar Athenas and 
other printed materials by Bod that are often quoted by scholars, but also the manuscript 
antecedents of the main work, and occasionally other printed or not printed writings related to 
the topic, in which Bod intended to register, archive and by these gestures, to animate the people 
and works of res litteraria. Literally new sources that had been unknown are not revealed in the 
thesis, however we do use materials that had been unprocessed before (eg. Literata Panno-
Dacica, A historiakra utat mutató magyar leksikon, some of Bod’s death speeches). Based on 
these sources in manuscript we can declare, that Bod, within his diversified oeuvre defined by 
church historical motivations, undoubtedly and provably collected and wrote the biographies 
of Transylvanian churchmen first and people of litterae from the two mother countries last as a 
completely separate project from his other works. From the beginning of the 1750s Bod was 
conceptually working on compiling the biographies of people deserving remembrance up until 
the edition of Magyar Athenas (and, of course, Smirnai Szent Polikárpus): he was sorting the 
forming texts and named the whole project from the beginning historia litteraria. The seemingly 
arbitrary topic of the thesis is justified by the inner accents of the sources. 
When speaking about the scholarly work of Bod done in the field of historia litteraria it 
is a most exciting question how the author and his work is connected to the tradition of literary 
history writing. In the history of literary scholarship Magyar Athenas has a special place from 
several viewpoints. The fact that it was written in Hungarian is a curiosity among the historiae 
litterariae in 18th century Hungary, even if we have data on earlier attempts of this kind. What 
is more, as opposed to other historiae litterariae of Hungary from the same century (eg. Mátyás 
Bél, Dávid Czvittinger, Elek Horányi, Pál Wallaszky, István Weszprémi), in Magyar Athenas, 
the religious topic and denominational approach is appearing much more vigorously than in the 
mentioned ones. Péter Bod was acting according to the tradition of historia litteraria genre when 
he emphasized religious neutrality in the preface, but that does not mean that Bod was able to 
or wanted to enforce the principles phrased in writing. In scholarly literarture the bias or unbias 
of Bod is a recurring and most debated question, which seems a relevant question if we are 
trying to find the roots of canonical literary history in historia litteraria, but regarding the diverse 
and ambiguous answers we might think that it is not a perfectly posed question. However, if we 
interpret Magyar Athenas in the context of old Hungarian literature, within denominational 
frames, we can explain Bod’s partiality in a more explicit and exact way. 
The thesis is built around two focal points, one of which is the general working method 
of Peter Bod, the other is the work of the author in the field of historia litteraria. After a summary 
of the research history of the topic, we are analizing the elements of Bod’s compiling and 
excerpting methods, than we focus on the conception and the change in the conception of the 
historia litteraria program. We are also trying to find an answer to why Athenas was published 
in Hungarian and finally we are collecting the works of different authors who intended to correct 
and/or improve Bod’s main work.  
2. Methodological considerations 
 
It was a main task considering Athenas to philologically compare the text of the edition with 
the manuscript preliminary notes Literata Panno Dacica, and also to explain the decision on 
the language of the book. Besides analyzing related texts, in order to support interpretation, we 
had to use the means of rhetorics as well: the structural formation of the main text and of the 
peritexts, schemas and clichés in them, the rhetoricity of remembering all help to understand 
the meaning and significance of Bod’s program, which is aiming at animating memory. It was 
also important to provide a contextualizing reading: we were trying to interpret Athenas and the 
intentions for its re-edition from the culture of Hungarian Calvinism and of Hungarian Calvinist 
ministers. Thus we were hoping to understand the phenomena that Péter Bod, even in his 
scholarly ambition, was attentive of the warranty and of amending of present and future readers. 
Regarding all that is mentioned above, it was not the correct or incorrect data that was 
interesting in the biographies and notes published in the lexicon (the correction or registration 
of which was not regarded as a task-to-be-done), but it was the role of the whole volume and 
of supplementaries to be examined in forming the identity of the Hungarian and Transylvanian 
Calvinist community. 
  
3. New results 
 
1. In presenting Péter Bod’s excerpting and compiling practice in the first place we 
could show up new important results in his handling of the sources. This is important since a 
recurrent motive of scholarly literature is the applause of the productivity of the author and, in 
connection to this, sometimes explicitly, other times only latently, the proclamation of his 
originality, which motives are not relevant with respect to the scientific milieu of the 18th 
century. This has been unambiguously reinforced both by Bod’s own remarks and by the 
analysis of his texts. Namely, we have meticulously analyzed Bod’s redaction methods used at 
the translation of Kősziklán épült ház ostroma and at the compilation of the last chapter of Szent 
Hilárius, and found that he tightly follows the sources and sorts out, translates and extracts the 
curiosities and those segments which are of scientific or of argumentative interest. The 
importance of the Lexicon universale, the encyclopedia of Johann Jacob Hofmann from the end 
of the 17th century has been proved by the analysis of the manuscript A historiákra utat mutató 
magyar leksikon: selected texts can be demonstrated in many printed works of Bod from A szent 
bibliának historiája to Szent Heortokrates and beyond. Up to now, it has been also unknown 
that the entry ‘scribendi ratio’ of Hofmann’s work served as a source for the well-known preface 
of Magyar Athenas referring to the history of writing. This text has been considered as Bod’s 
own contribution so far. Based on his using the lexicon of Hofmann and other sources (the 
church history of Debreceni Ember Pál or Heidfeld’s Sphinx philosophica) we can settle that in 
tune with the cultivation of science of the period it is a fundamental practice in Bod’s writing 
to compile from others’ texts, sometimes indicated, other times not. Our observations in this 
subject modulate the long-standing image of Bod’s extraordinary workload, productivity in 
writing and originality: he is only credited so many significant publications and manuscripts 
because the majority of his writings is not original but works brought about by compilation, 
redaction and translation of others’ works.  
2. While investigating Bod’s historia litteraria program, it turns out that the key word of 
all his source text is recollection. The core of the concept is the intention to maintain, evoke 
and pass over the deeds of good people of the past. We have shown that in Bod’s case the 
gesture of recollection works properly if there remains a written trace from the past from which 
one can evoke the forgotten values of the bygone. An important result of the dissertation is that 
it clarifies that the evocation of memory makes sense only if the target audience learns from the 
scientific-literary virtues recalled. Ultimately, the prime aim of Bod’s literary, redactory and 
publishing activity is to amend his readers, to lead them to salvation. This idea comes from the 
ideologists of the Reformation: knowledge and faith presuppose one another for Melanchton 
and his followers. Bod stands for this idea not only in his parochial writings but also in his 
scientific-educational works such as the Magyar Athenas. From concessional perspective, this 
parlance was received in the second half of the 18th century. However, as shown in the 
dissertation, it was anachronistic in the scientific literature of the 18th century. But this did not 
prevent even the extraordinary critical Horányi from cooperation and using the Athenas as 
source. 
3. We have summarized how the historia litteraria concept of Péter Bod formed from its 
initial objective into a full-fledged program. Bod’s initial objective was to collect the biography 
and works of notorious Transylvanian churchmen and publish it with the title Dacia Literata. 
We know from a letter dated from April 12, 1753 written by Bod to István Halmágyi that Bod 
first made up the biography of three famous Transylvanian reformed churchmen, Vitus János 
Balsaráti, István Geleji Katona and Páriz Ferenc Pápai in Latin. He would group the other 
biographies on a chronological order on the advice of the friars and patrons, albeit he found the 
alphabetical order due to Czvittinger more in place. Later more and more people, scholar and 
politician outside the church came within his sight, even people from Hungary. From his 
correspondence with Miklós Sinai, we can conclude that Bod collected the biographies in Latin 
until quite late, the spring of 1765 under the entry Literata Panno-Dacica, and made a decision 
in a for us not reconstructible way to rearrange the material and publish it in Hungarian. The 
collection of biographies in Latin would have given the basis of a whole series: it provided a 
source even for two volumes in Hungarian. Finally, Bod published the biography of the 
Transylvanian bishops of the Reformed Church in chronological order in his Smirnai Szent 
Polikárpus; and the biography of the Transylvanian and Hungarian scholars in alphabetical 
order in Magyar Athenas. 
4. In case of both Hungarian publications by comparing texts we have proven that the 
starting point was the notes of the Literata Panno-Dacica which, however, has been later 
extensively completed. This means that Bod has worked out the biography of those nine 
Transylvanian bishops which previously did not feature in the Literata Panno-Dacica. In the 
redaction of the Magyar Athenas he tried to meet the demands of the historia litteraria genre 
but he was not able (and presumably did not even want to) to extend retrospectively the 
principle of impartiality. Thus, we can observe denominational benchmarks in his lexicon of 
scholars written in Latin despite of the principle of impartiality declared in the introduction. 
Reformed authors in the Athenas are highly overrepresented; Bod sometimes speaks about 
authors of other confession in pejorative terms; and he brings up from time to time the bitter 
experience of persecution of the Reformed Church. Bod also used the terms referring to 
suffering, repression and persecution in connection to other protestant scholars. Hence, one can 
claim that the scientific perspectives of Athenas are greatly overshadowed by the martyrdom of 
the Reformed Church. Consequently, the main function of this work is not the role it played in 
scientific literature or in the circulation of science in Hungarian but more in the formation and 
strengthening of reformed identity. 
5. In the last chapter of the dissertation we tackle the program of amending, completing 
the text of Magyar Athenas which overarches projects of different scale, ranging from random 
notes at the margin to systematic accumulation spanning centuries and generations and to 
enlarged, multi-volumed republications. The appendices and notes of Magyar Athenas has not 
been scientifically investigated yet. It becomes evident from the ambition of the authors that 
each author completed the text within his own competence and also that it was not in the interest 
of authors from other sects to strengthen Bod’s work and thus the identity of the Reformed 
Church. One can also see the limitations of the historia litteraria program: the fragments 
collected locally, typically in the main centers of the Reformed Church moreover with a 
denominational filter do not line up in a consistent whole. Not to mention that after Horányi’s 
Memoria Hungarorum the opportunities in the program had been exhausted. Regarding the 
further reception history of the work one can observe multiple tendencies: the cult of Bod could 
remain vivid in a religious environment only. Magyar Athenas reappeared only once, in 1887: 
the redactors of the Új Magyar Athenas published the biography of protestant Hungarian 
authors making use of Bod’s material. Another aspect is the bibliographic value of Bod’s work. 
The information in Magyar Athenas is valuable not primarily because of the subsequent 
aesthetically oriented literary history, but rather from a bibliographic perspective (and this holds 
not only to Bod’s Athenas but also to other authors’ historia litteraria): one often hit on rare and 
unpublished manuscripts or unknown issues which Bod yet witnessed. Bod’s work remains an 
inestimable source of the retrospective bibliographies (as the RMNy or the early volumes of 
the Hungarian national bibliography).

I. 
A kutatás előzményei 
 
A Várpalotán az 1956-ban történtek már részben ismertek, a 
disszertációm a levéltári anyag feldolgozásában és néhány új részlet 
feltárásában lehetett az első. A témaválasztást az is indokolta, hogy a több 
szakmunka a várpalotai események nem egy adatát – főként forrásaik 
elírásaira támaszkodva – pontatlanul közölte. A vidéki fegyveres harcok 
színhelyei közül Várpalota kiemelkedik, hiszen a várpalotai forradalmárok 
tűzharcot folytattak szovjet és magyar katonai alakulatokkal és a város 
környékén november 4-e után is létezett valamiféle fegyveres ellenállás. 
A forradalom várpalotai forradalmi történések bemutatásának 
napjainkban is lehet létjogosultsága, különösen, ha több forrás 
egybevetésével és kritikájával igyekszik alátámasztani az állításait.  
 
A kutatás során az alábbi kérdések, tézisek merültek fel, melyeket a 
disszertációban igyekeztem bizonyítani:  
Mindaz, ami a szovjet megszállás kezdete óta történt a forradalom fontos 
előzménye. 
 A második hazai proletárdiktatúra időszaka a település 
történetének jelentős fejezete, ugyanakkor Várpalota is fontos volt 
a szocialista kísérlet számára. 
 Várpalota szénvagyona földrajzi fekvése és településmorfológiai 
sajátosságai befolyással voltak nem csupán a fejlődésére, hanem a

forradalom eseményeire is. 
 Várpalota társadalmi sajátosságai is befolyásolták a forradalmi 
események alakulását. 
 Az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc várpalotai történései és 
a forradalom helyi intézményeinek működése egy rendpárti 
forradalom képét mutatják. 
 A forradalmat követően a hatalom által indított rendőri, ügyészi és 
bírói eljárások elsődleges célja nem az igazság, a történések 
feltárása, hanem a megtorlás volt. 
 
II. 
A kutatás módszerei és forrásai 
 
Elkerülhetetlen volt tehát az egyes források összevetése, adataik 
ütköztetése. Újabb problémát jelent, hogy a ránk maradt iratanyag 
lényegében elkerülhetetlenül torz és hiányos képet rajzol az eseményekről, a 
résztvevőkről, a társadalomról és az országról. Egyrészt szembe kell nézni 
azzal, hogy a ránk maradt iratanyag elsősorban a belügyi, ügyészi és bírói 
szervek hagyatéka. A fennmaradt iratanyag ugyanakkor más értelemben is 
torzít, hiszen a kutatást óhatatlanul a büntetőeljárások tanulmányozása 
irányába tereli.  
 Külön nehézséget jelenthet az iratanyag, az események és az 
eljárások részeseinek sajátos fogalomhasználata. Nem egyszer lényegi 
különbség ragadható meg a forradalmárok és a hivatalos szervek között a

használt fogalmak tartamát illetően. A forradalmárok, perbe fogottak 
gyakran a proletárdiktatúra fogalmaival, frazeológiájával írták le az 
eseményeket, sőt fogalmazták meg még a polgári demokrácia irányába 
mutató követeléseiket is. A párt logikájától, minősítéseitől és 
fogalomhasználatától történő távolságtartás különösen nehéznek, ám 
szükségesnek bizonyult, különösen a párt és az állami szervek által 
keletkeztetett iratanyag tanulmányozása során.  
 
1. Levéltári (primer) források 
A várpalotai történésekre vonatkozó iratok jelentős részét a Magyar 
Nemzeti Levéltár Veszprém Megyei Levéltárban őrzik, ám a Hadtörténelmi 
Levéltár, valamint az Állambiztonsági Szolgálatok Történelmi Levéltára is 
sok vonatkozó dokumentummal rendelkezik. A várpalotai eseményekre 
vonatkozó iratanyag kapcsolatot mutat – a teljesség igénye nélkül – a csóri, 
a székesfehérvári (az ún. Guliver-csoport), a tatabányai, valamint 
természetesen a veszprémi eseményekkel, különösen a Brusznyai-perrel, a 
Nagybudapesti Központi Munkástanáccsal, a győri Dunántúli Nemzeti 
Tanáccsal, a Péterfy Sándor utcai kórházban működő forradalmi csoporttal, 
sőt a Baglyas-hegyi fegyveresek révén a kádári nyomozóhatóságok által 
feltételezett, a Hotel Orientben működő ún. „bécsi ellenforradalmi 
csoporttal” is. 
Az iratokon kívül a vizsgálati anyagban talált fényképek, valamint 
a Hadtörténelmi Térképtárból származó térképek (köztük egy 1955-ben 
készült vezérkari térkép) is komoly segítséget jelentettek a munkában.

2. Szakirodalom (szekunder források) 
Várpalota 1956-os történéseit már számos munkában 
összefoglalták. Időben kétségkívül az elsők egyike az úgynevezett fehér 
könyv, amely a kádári propaganda terméke. A munkás–parasztnak mondott 
kormány szemlélete azonban egyeduralkodó volt az eseményekről készült 
későbbi művekben is, egészen a kádári korszak végéig. A történéséket 
feldolgozó írások közül kiemelkedik a Fakász Tibor által szerkesztett 
emlékkönyv, valamint Mészáros Gyula cikksorozata. Említette a várpalotai 
eseményeket a Kahler Frigyes és M. Kiss Sándor által kiadott 
forrásgyűjtemény (Rejtett dokumentumok...), illetve Szakolczai Attila „A 
vidék forradalma” című könyve is.  Kahler Frigyes a Brusznyai-perről írt 
munkája és Mészáros Gyula Veszprémről szóló monográfiája szintén 
fontos, releváns adatokat tartalmaznak. 
 
3. A sajtó mint forrás 
Fontos források a korabeli sajtótermékek is. Várpalota tekintetében 
mindenekelőtt az Új Várpalota (a városi pártbizottság lapja), a 
Veszprémmegyei Népújság (a megyei lap) és a Várpalotai Napló (helyi 
forradalmi lap), melyek nemcsak követték az eseményeket, hanem 
helyenként megkísérelték befolyásolni is azokat. Az eseményekben komoly 
szerepet játszott a helyi vezetékes rádió, a Szabad Bányász Rádió. Ennek 
felvételei nem maradtak fenn, de a peranyagokból, visszaemlékezésekből 
néhány elhangzott közlemény rekonstruálható volt.

4. Visszaemlékezések, oral history  
Fakász Tibor 1993-ban a Némák szóra kelnek című kötetben gyűjtötte össze 
a forradalom fontos szereplőinek visszaemlékezéseit. Fakász Tibor – az 
elbeszélések ütköztetése, összevetése révén – a visszaemlékezések alapján 
rekonstruálni az eseményeket. Ezt a kötetet egy – Leitner Ferenccel 
készített – interjúval,  a hozzám beérkezett visszaemlékezésekkel és néhány 
szóbeli közléssel tudtam mindössze kiegészíteni. A visszaemlékezések 
részben kiegészítették, részben megerősítették a levéltári forrásokban 
foglaltakat.  
 
III. 
A kutatás konklúziói 
 
 Mindaz, ami a szovjet megszállás kezdete óta történt a 
forradalom fontos előzménye. 
 A szovjet megszállás a magyar társadalomnak egy 
kibeszélhetetlen traumája volt, a szovjet katonai jelenlét 
állandósulása pedig csak tovább növelte a feszültséget. A 
magyar társadalom 1945-től fogva ugyan valamelyest 
hozzászokhatott a kommunista frazeológiához, ám akadtak 
bizonyos fogalmak, amelyek tartalma alapvetően megváltozott, 
amit nem mindenki ismert fel. A demokrácia alatt a társadalom

többsége eredetileg az alkotmányos, a választásokon és 
többpártrendszeren alapuló polgári demokráciát értette, a 
marxisták pedig a proletárdiktatúrát. Bizonyos fogalmak – mint 
a „reakciós” vagy a „kulák” – korábban nem voltak 
használatban, a napisajtóban történő elterjedésüket elsősorban 
a kommunista párt befolyásának köszönhették. Minden a 
proletárdiktatúra kiteljesedése irányába tett lépés – a politikai 
rendőrség felállítása, a tervgazdálkodás bevezetése, az 
erőszakos téeszesítés, az erőltetett iparosítás, a szabotázs és 
közellátási perek – növelte az elégedetlenséget, bár az osztrák 
államszerződés megkötése és a lengyel események sokaknak 
alaptalannak bizonyuló reményt adtak a változásra. Nem 
feltétlen a párttal, hanem annak elnyomó politikájával állt 
szemben a társadalom, hanem a diktatúrával és annak 
védelmezőivel. A társadalom egy része talán elképzelhetőnek 
tartott volna egy párton belüli megoldást is, mivel nem 
mindenki ismerte fel, hogy a társadalom zöme által várt 
reformok már túlmutatnának egy lehetséges 
rendszerkorrekción, sokkal inkább jelentettek volna gyökeres 
változásokat, a proletárdiktatúra elvetését.

 A második hazai proletárdiktatúra időszaka a település 
történetének jelentős fejezete, ugyanakkor Várpalota is 
fontos volt a szocialista kísérlet számára. 
 A szocializmus vitathatatlanul a település történetének 
fontos korszaka, ekkor kapta vissza városi rangját, növelte 
lélekszámát a többszörösére és ebben az időszakban alakult ki 
a mai városkép. A település adottságai (szénvagyona, a 
timföldkitermelő helyek viszonylagos közelsége, a meglévő, 
bővíthető ipari kapacitás) korábban is léteztek és részben még 
napjainkban is fennállnak, ám a szocializmus időszakában 
kerültek leginkább összhangba a politikai akarattal, a 
nagyarányú iparfejlesztési programmal. A kutatás során vált 
ugyanakkor nyilvánvalóvá, hogy Várpalota milyen fontos volt 
a hazai szocialista kísérlet számára, így ezt a gondolatot 
igazolva láttam. 
 
 Várpalota szénvagyona földrajzi fekvése és

nem csupán fejlődésére, hanem a forradalom 
eseményeire is. 
 A különböző tájegységek a Bakonyalja és a Sárrét 
találkozásánál, a királyok városa, Székesfehérvár, illetve a 
királynék városa, Veszprém között félúton a régi római hadiút 
mentén fekvő település a korábbi évszázadokban sem számított 
jelentéktelennek, nem demográfiai vagy gazdasági súlya miatt, 
hanem elsősorban a katonai szempontok emelték ki a többi 
hasonló nagyságú helység közül. A település földrajzi fekvése 
fontosnak bizonyult a település fejlődése szempontjából, még 
1956-ban is – a szovjet és magyar katonai alakulatok 
elhelyezkedése miatt – hatással volt az eseményekre. Várpalota 
három településrészből – Várpalota, Inota, Pét – történő 
egyesítése településmorfológiai szempontból annyira tagolt, 
hogy joggal merül fel a kérdés: hány világ egy város? 
Várpalota és Inota kétségkívül egybeforrt, ám Pét – talán a 
földrajzi távolság miatt is – mindig is megőrzött valamennyit 
az önállóságából.

 Várpalota társadalmi sajátosságai is befolyásolták a 
forradalmi események alakulását. 
 Várpalota szocialista iparvárossá fejlesztése során a 
helyi társadalom jelentős változáson ment keresztül. A bánya, a 
péti vegyiművek, az építkezések, az erőmű, az alumíniumkohó 
és az egyéb üzemek munkaerőigényét nem csak a megyéből, 
hanem az ország minden részéből érkező munkásokkal sem 
lehetett maradéktalanul kielégíteni, ezért rabmunkásokat, 
illetve bányász katonákat is foglalkoztattak a településen. Az 
ideiglenes szállásokon lakó – javarészt férfi – munkások 
gyökértelenek voltak Várpalotán, sem tulajdonuk, sem kiterjedt 
rokonságuk nem volt a településen, így egy kiélezett 
helyzetben talán bátrabban, radikálisabban helyezkedhettek 
szembe a proletárdiktatúrával. Az a kérdés is felmerülhet 
ugyanakkor, hogy Várpalota kinek a városa volt? A 
kommunistáké, ahogy a párt hirdette? A bányászoké, hiszen a 
várpalotai iparmedence üzemei javarészt a bánya által termelt 
függtek? A várpalotai társadalom számára az 1956-os 
forradalom jelentette azt a közös élményt, ami

egybeforrasztotta az ország különböző tájairól érkezett 
embereket és tette őket lélekben is várpalotaivá. 
 
 Az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc várpalotai 
történéseinek és a forradalom intézményeinek 
vizsgálata alapján alapvetően egy rendpárti forradalom 
képe bontakozik ki 
 A forradalom alatt rendkívül sok fegyveres összetűzés 
zajlott a városban, október 26-án a forradalmárok Vörös 
Hadsereg és a Magyar Néphadsereg erőivel egyaránt 
szembekerültek, ennek dacára a forradalmárok már 26-án éjjel 
megalakították saját intézményeiket. A Forradalmi Tanács – 
bár többször átalakult – átvette a Városi Tanács egykori 
feladatait, ám a legfontosabb céljának a rend helyreállítását 
tekintette. 26-án már közös forradalmár-rendőr járőrök kerültek 
kiküldésre, később a Nemzetőrségnek az egyik legfontosabb 
célja az illetéktelen kezekbe került fegyverek begyűjtése és az 
elharapódzó lövöldözések megakadályozása lett.

 A kádári rendszer célja a megtorlás volt 
 A várpalotai eseményekkel kapcsolatban a 
nyomozóhatóságok kiterjedt nyomozást folytattak, és a város 
méretéhez képest igen sok személyt vontak felelőségre. A 
bírósági eljárások mellett, közbiztonsági őrizet és munkajogi 
hátrányok egyaránt sújthatták az események részeseit a Kádár-
kormány saját uralmának elfogadtatása érdekében jogi és jogon 
túli eszközökkel egyaránt alkalmazott. A kádári rendszer a 
jogot a megtorlás szolgálatába állította. A forradalmat követő 
rendőri, ügyészi és bírói eljárások célja nem a történések 
hiteles feltárása, hanem a megtorlás volt.  
 
 A kutatás lehetséges további irányai 
A további kutatás egyik lehetséges iránya a várpalotai 
vállalatok iratanyagának a tanulmányozása, amely vélhetően 
még sok információt tartalmazhat a forradalom vonatkozásában 
is, különösen a munkástanácsok tevékenységével kapcsolatban. 
A jelenlegi iratanyag csak meglehetősen töredékes 
információkat nyújt a Várpalotán működő munkástanácsok

megalakulására, tevékenységére, intézkedéseire, személyi 
összetételére vonatkozóan. A legteljesebb munkástanács 
tagokat felsoroló névsor a Várpalotai Szénbányák objektum 
dossziéjában maradt fenn, ám ez sem tartalmaz érdemi 
információkat a munkástanácsok tevékenységével 
kapcsolatban. Mindezek mellett talán a várpalotai és a megyei 
pártszervek iratainak kiterjedtebb vizsgálata lehetne indokolt.

Lovik  ároly 1915- en halt meg, innent l számítva a mai napig nem múlt el úgy 
évtized, hogy ne írtak volna róla tudományos  elleg  munkát, mégis az el eledett író, 
a kánon ól kiszorult század ordulós kismester narratívá a határozta meg a vele 
kapcsolatos diskurzust   z egyszerre  elentette azt, hogy a kutatásnak voltak 
el zményei is, azon an egy dönt  hiányra építettem  az életra z és a vele szorosan 
össze ügg  életm  szisztematikus,  orrásokon alapuló részletes vizsgálatára   ltér  
el eszélésmódokra alapozó, verseng  értelmez i hagyományok (ködlovag – 
gentleman) alakultak ki, melyek dönt  tö  ségük en ma is alapvet en határozzák 
meg a vele és más század ordulós novellistákkal kapcsolat an a tudományos 
érdekl dés horizont át, a recepció lehet ségeit.   dolgozat pro léma elvetése így arra 
irányult, hogy mennyi en lehetséges ezeket a töredezett, a  eltáró  elleg  kutatás  elé

megközelítések integrálására  Így szerencsés módon nem kellett választanom a között, 
hogy kizárólag a m elemz , vagy épp ellenkez leg, pozitivista módon adatoló 
dolgozatot ír ak, mert ezeket a módszertanokat párhuzamosan és összehangoltan 
alkalmazhattam. A disszertáció érdekl dése alapvet en történeti  elleg , hisz egy 
személy életére és életm vére kérdez rá, azon an az ú historizmus módszertani 
megközelítésével élve egy en önre lexív módon az irodalom történetiségét is 
tematizál a, így azt is, hogy –  tephem Green latt nyomán – hogyan találhat utat 
Lovik  ároly a mai magyar irodalomtudomány a    recepciótörténetre re lektálva, 
 igyelem e véve az ott  elhasznált megközelítésmódokat, igyekeztem ú  esztétikai

szempontokat is alkalmazni, így a hermeneutika, imagológia, térpoétika vagy 
emlékezettörténet eszköztárát.  z így létre ött szövegkorpusz vállaltan

dolgozat eredményei igazol ák ennek a megközelítésnek a lét ogosultságát

szépirodalmi és pu licisztikai vonatkozások  emutatásával   zekre a  eltáró  elleg  
kutatásokra lehetett építeni a dolgozat második csoport á a sorolható eredményeket, 
amelyek els sor an a személyre és az életm re vonatkozólag tesznek 
megállapításokat, ill   avaslatokat. Vagyis arra, hogy milyen ú ,  riss kérdésekkel 
érdemes Lovik  ároly és életm ve  elé  ordulni   utatásom során oda jutottam, hogy 
egy  óval autonóma   em er és író volt, mint azt az utókor  eltételezte róla  Legyen 
szó arról, hogy hívó evangélikus em erként aktív sza adk m ves volt, vagy hogy

ezáltal  eilleszthet vé válik a magyar irodalomtörténeti  olyamat a, úgy történeti, 
mint poétikai szempontok alap án is
