I. Antecedents of the research, problem raising 
 
János Jacobinus (1574–1603), the Unitarian author from Kolozsvár, chosen as the topic of the 
dissertation, is not a well-known author of old Hungarian literature. However, we cannot claim that literary 
history did not pay any attention to him at all. Significant and supportive measures of the research included in 
the dissertation were the previous results of Emma Bartoniek, György Bónis, Tamás Kruppa, Péter Kulcsár and 
Béla Stoll, among others. However, the author’s lifework has not been studied in its entirety.   
Our knowledge of Jacobinus’s life is quite incomplete. We know that despite his young age, he quickly 
had a successful career in the Transylvanian chancellery. We are left with a celebratory poem written on the 
occasion of a marriage, the Chorus Musarum, as well as his brief account of the 1595 campaign in Havasalföld, 
the Brevis enarratio, which is an essential source of events from an eyewitness. 
 
II. Methodology 
 
The dissertation achieves results relevant to science using a complex methodology.  The tools that are 
used by this methodology are historical biography, print history, comparative historiography, Latin textology and 
source philology. First, it undertakes to draw the authors’ portrait, and to this end, it summarises the available 
data on Jacobinus’s life in a thorough manner.  It pays attention to the conditions under which Chorus Musarum 
originated. In connection with the work, it outlines the 16th-century history of the genre of wedding poetry, 
which has not been examined in literary history so far, based on data of Régi Magyarországi Nyomtatványok 
(Old Hungarian Printed Books). It does the same for the other work, Brevis enarratio. It also outlines and 
analyses the historiographical context in which Jacobinus’s historical work was born. First, it organises the 
historical works recommended to Zsigmond Báthory and, relying on the preliminaries, forms a picture of the role 
of historiography in the age. The source-centred historical part of the dissertation discusses the antecedents of 
Transylvania’s entry into war before the Fifteen Years’ War, thus creating a context for what is contained in 
Brevis enarratio. The works of Jacobinus and Péter Pellérdi, another eyewitness, are used in the discussion of 
the history of the campaign in Havasalföld. The philological part of the dissertation deals with the diversified 
legacy of Brevis enarratio. With the use of text analysis and comparison, it looks for its influence in the works of 
other Transylvanian writers. In the same manner, it also examines the formation of the Latin text into Hungarian 
historical songs. 
 
III. New results 
 
 György Bónis’s study of the date of birth of János Jacobinus, based on the recommendation in Brevis 
enarratio, concluded that Jacobinus was born between 23 March 1574 and 23 March 1575. Since then, it has 
become certain from an entry in Paul Eber’s calendar that Jacobinus’s birth’s exact date was 23 August 1574. 
The exact date of János Baranyai Decsi’s death was also entered in a similar calendar. We assume that the copy 
of the calendar containing data on Jacobinus’s birthday was owned by his father, Bernát.  
Jacobinus published his work titled Brevis enarratio in 1596 as the notary of Kolozsvár.  The date at the 
end of the recommendation to Zsigmond Báthory is 25 March 1596. Between 10 April and 21 August 1598, after 
the first resignation of Zsigmond Báthory, Jacobinus already registered diplomas in May and June as the 
secretary of the Transylvanian chancellery, under the rule of Mária Krisztierna. In the history of the 
Transylvanian princely chancellery, within the Báthory era and the chancellery of Imre Sulyok, the other great 
official career was his, who did not rise as an aristocrat, but in a purely official career. It is palpable in the history 
of the chancellery that being part of the chancellery and the activity of a historian went hand in hand. However, 
Jacobinus published his historical work before he held a national office. He did not write an extensive 
retrospective work based on documents, diplomas, minutes, resolutions, instructions, or other types of notes, but 
a shorter one based on his personal experiences with events of great significance. According to our hypothesis, 
Jacobinus was motivated not only by the recording of Zsigmond Báthory’s military deeds but also by his career 
in office, and the publication of Brevis enarratio may have played a role in his appointment as secretary of the 
chancellery.

Another work by Jacobinus, made on the occasion of the wedding of the prestigious Catholic citizen of 
Kolozsvár, István Kakas and Susanna Romer, is entitled Chorus Musarum, was published in 1597. After 
reviewing the history of the 16th-century genre of wedding occasional publications, Jacobinus’s work appears 
unique because of its title. While the titles of the works left to us are typically formulated by naming their genre, 
the title of Jacobinus’s work refers to the content of his poem, which was unusual at the time. The person of 
Jacobinus is also unique among the other authors in that he was the only one to hold a public office, as a notary 
in Kolozsvár at the time of his work. However, five years after the poem’s highfaluting good wishes, the 
relationship between Kakas and Jacobinus had deteriorated due to a property lawsuit.

The Brevis enarratio recommendation also contains explanations of historical theory. Therefore, it was 
apparent to review the prefaces of the historical works recommended to Zsigmond Báthory. It can be said that 
what Jacobinus has to say about the usefulness, beauty, dignity, and meaning of the study of history cannot be 
considered unique or is even commonplace, but it is noteworthy that it reflects the prevailing views of the age. 
The historical works examined were primarily aimed at capturing contemporary events, and their genre was 
commentarii. We can only speculate on the reasons that motivate their authors. The manuscript ars historica by 
István Szamosközy was inevitably involved in the investigation, which echoes the ideas of Justus Lipsius. 
Taking Sallustius as a sample of the historian's master prose embellished with floscules, Szamosközy himself 
takes a turn from him, thus enriching his reviewer account of the historical work of the Italian Joannes Michael 
Brutus. 
 
 The dissertation covers the work of Veit Marchthaler, which has the same title and theme as Jacobinus’. 
However, his work pays little attention to the commemoration of the events of 1595, but rather to the 
glorification of the prince, presumably in the interests of his principal, the Henckel Bank in Vienna, in the hope 
of successful business in the future. It simultaneously carries glorifying traits, seeks to win the prince’s 
benevolence while also draws from the Chronicon Carionis, the Wittenberg Protestant view of history, one of 
Kaspar Peucer’s formulations – for a Catholic prince.  
 Reviewing the situation in Transylvania before the war against the Turks, we agree with the standpoint 
of László Szilas that the Jesuit confessor and diplomat of Zsigmond Báthory, Alfonso Carillo, cannot be held 
responsible for the illegal and brutal settlement with the Turkish party in Transylvania. 
 Another contemporary account of the campaign in Havasalföld is from the pen of Péter Pellérdi. His 
letter is an authentic source of events, his text independent of that contained in the Brevis enarratio, thus a 
parallel narrative to the successes of the war. The dissertation included the text of both of them in the part of the 
Havasalföld campaign. Although their works contain two parallel passages, it cannot be established with 
certainty that they knew of each other’s writings. 
 
 Tamás Kruppa explored the relationship between the campaign in Havasalföld and the Jesuit 
propaganda. In his work Tradíció és propaganda keresztútján – Fejezetek Báthory Zsigmond udvarának 
kultúrájából [At the Crossroad of Tradition and Propaganda – Chapters from the Culture of Zsigmond 
Báthory’s Court] (2015), he also analysed the works of Marchthaler, Jacobinus and Baranyai Decsi. We must 
see, however, that the propaganda associated with the campaign, recognised by all Christian contemporaries as a 
tremendous and exceptional success, or, in our opinion, more aptly, a glorifying overtone typical of 
contemporary sources that choose the theme of the campaign, is polyphonic in one degree or another. This 
dissertation points out and emphasises that regardless of their religious denominational affiliation in the 
Christian world – Marchthaler was Lutheran, Jacobinus Unitarian, János Baranyai Decsi was Reformed – they 
expressed their enthusiasm uniformly and not only for propagandistic purposes but also for their individual 
interests. 
 
 The afterlife of Jacobinus’ Brevis enarratio is very diverse. The textual connection between the 
historical works of Jacobinus and János Baranyai Decsi was also incidentally referred to by Péter Kulcsár when 
he wrote the preface introducing the translation of the historical work of János Baranyai Decsi. This dissertation,

based on the texts of the two authors examined where did Baranyai Decsi literally copy Jacobinus, where did he 
reworded it without any intellectual change, where did he added to it or added something else to his text, and 
where did he shorten it. However, the comparison of the works of the two authors is not an end in itself, as it also 
provides essential lessons for textual criticism. Ferenc Toldy’s edition of the text of Baranyai Decsi can be 
improved in many places by taking into account one of its sources, the text of Brevis enarratio. 
 
 This opens up the investigation that attempts to clarify the dating of Baranyai Decsi’s Commentarii de 
rebus Ungaricis based on the publication of Jacobinus’s text. Most of the work must have been completed after 
25 March 1596, probably in April, shortly after the appearance of the Brevis enarratio in Kolozsvár, up to the 
text border of 10. 9. 15, which reports on the death of Pasha Sinan. 
 
 Other contemporaries and later Hungarian historians writing in Latin also used the works of Jacobinus. 
Ambrus Somogyi copied literally the Brevis enarratio into his work; Miklós Istvánffy also used his text to a 
much lesser extent. Later Bethlen Farkas, who also literally took over his brief accounts, notes that Jacobinus 
was his source.

 Jacobinus’s late humanist prose, historical work, historiola also became the text of historical songs. The 
identity of one of the songwriters of Brevis enarratio is unknown. In his truncated work left to us, he consistently 
mentions Prince Zsigmond as king. Sometimes he broadly follows the text of his source, sometimes he uses 
insertions, sometimes he omits part from Jacobinus’ text, sometimes he only undertakes paraphrases, and 
sometimes he extracts from it. He can be said to be true to its source, but it rarely translates it literally. 
Presumably, the publisher of this work, who was also Gáspár Heltai, had the business policy interest in 
publishing it to the general public in the year 1596, perhaps simultaneously or shortly after the publication of 
Brevis enerratio, in Hungarian as well in order to increase the number of copies sold. 
 The author of the other historical song is known. István Szőlősi, a Unitarian preceptor, formed the work 
of Jacobinus into a historical song again, in 1635. The internal arguments taken from the work support the theory 
that the author was no longer alive when the work was published. Szőlősi probably did not use the independent 
edition of Brevis enarratio, but a collection edition containing works on Hungarian history. He added fictional 
speeches to the singing, but there are also parts that he left out. Contrary to Lajos Dézsi’s statement, his poetry 
and language do not fall short of those of his unknown translator, and despite his insertions, he cannot be said to 
be wordy.  
 
 The text edition and translation of the Brevis enarratio can be found in the appendix of the dissertation. 
The publication improved Béla Stoll’s interpretations in several points. The appendix of the dissertation also 
contains the hitherto unpublished text of the Chorus Musarum. The appendix also contains all the parallel text 
parts of Jacobinus and Baranya Decsi. 
 
 From this dissertation, it is also clear that the lifework of János Jacobinus is short but vastly important 
for his era. Brevis enarratio is one of the authoritative and defining sources in the history of the Havasalföld 
campaign. After reviewing his work’s afterlife, it can be proven that this work significantly influenced later 
historians who wrote about the campaign in Havasalföld in Latin. Also, historic poems formed from his work 
made the greatest triumphs and military achievements of Zsigmond Báthory widely known.

1. Antecedents of the research and main questions 
 
The aim of my dissertation is to examine the 
institutionalization of Hungarian youth organization in Transylvania. 
The most crucial political changes in the history of the Hungarian 
minority of Romania happened during the 1918 regime change. The 
following two regime changes in 1944 and 1989 did not impose a 
paradigm change either, but at the same time they significantly 
affected the frameworks and opportunities for self-organisation and 
self-expression. The regime change created a wholly new situation. 
Thus, the events of 1989 serve as a natural starting point for the 
reinvigoration of the Hungarian public life in Transylvania. After the 
disintegration of the bipolar world order, the new political and legal 
environment favoured the self-organisation of the Hungarian minority 
in Transylvania. As a result of this, new organisations started 
springing up, and old organisations were re-established. During the 
reinvigoration of civil society following the fall of the Ceaușescu-
regime, the youth were the most dynamic factor in the democratisation 
process. In the year 1989, in the context of the post-revolutionary 
atmosphere, local RMDSZ bodies and youth organisations were 
founded in Transylvanian settlements simultaneously and in parallel. 
The latter mostly bore the name MADISZ (Hungarian Democratic 
Youth Union). Despite this, examining Hungarian youth organisations 
is not one of the most popular topics when it comes to studies on the 
Hungarian society in Transylvania.

The Hungarian youth in Transylvania has got specific 
characteristics in more than one respect. During its examinations, at 
least two dimensions have to be taken into account, as in addition to 
the youth aspect, the national aspect is also of key importance. During 
the research, the first and maybe the most significant question was 
this: from the point of view of which discipline should the topic be 
analysed? Is there a theoretical framework that allows the two aspects 
to be examined weighted equally, or should one aspect be chosen as 
the basis of the key aspects during the research? Determining the unit 
of analysis was also an important decision; should the Hungarian 
youth organisations or their institutionalization be the main focus? 
When focusing on the youth organisations, all three aspects of the 
analytical unit can be underlined. Should one concentrate on the youth 
aspect, a youth sociology approach can be adopted. If the Hungarian 
aspect is emphasised, a nationalism theory approach seems relevant. 
If the organisational aspect is the main aspect, organisational 
sociology theories can be applied. When focusing on the 
institutionalization process, the history of the Hungarians in 
Transylvania cannot be overlooked. In this case, an important aspect 
has to be taken into account from a socio-historical point of view: at 
the most important historical turning points (regime changes of 1918, 
1944 and 1989), the Hungarian society in Transylvania organised 
itself on a national principle. Thus, the attempts of the Hungarian 
society in Transylvania to organise itself can be regarded as an 
institutionalization process based on a national principle. This process 
can be examined through theories on nationalism.

2. Methodology 
 
In the first part of the dissertation, the key aspects and 
theoretical approaches of three disciplines (youth sociology, 
nationalism theory, and organisational sociology) are analysed in 
order to define which discipline and which theories can provide an 
adequate theoretical framework for the analysis of the 
institutionalization of Hungarian youth organisations in Transylvania.  
During the literature review, no integrative theoretical 
approaches were found that would analyse with an equal weight the 
youth and national aspects. A decision was then made to focus on the 
institutionalization process in my dissertation. Thus, the 
methodological starting point of the dissertation which defines the 
analysis procedure was decided to be minority nation building 
process, from the field of study of nationalism. This certainly does not 
mean that the youth and organisational aspects will not appear during 
the analysis, but the research questions do not refer to these aspects. 
In the second part of the dissertation, the institutionalization 
of the Hungarian youth organisations in Transylvania are analysed. 
The most important historical turning points of the Hungarians in 
Transylvania are first reviewed from a historical point of view. I focus 
on the youth aspect of these turning points, in particular on presenting 
two intellectual groups, Transylvanian Youth (Erdélyi Fiatalok) and 
Trust (Hitel), which were the dominant youth intellectual groups from 
the point of view of inner publicity during the interwar period. When

presenting the periods in question, mostly secondary sources were 
used. Contemporary press materials were used when available. 
Thereafter, the changes in national politicy after 1989 were described. 
This was followed by an attempt to divide into periods the 
institutionalization process of the Hungarian youth organisations in 
Transylvania after the Romanian revolution in 1989.  
It was attempted to present the positions that were taken in 
the most important issues and the positions and strategies that 
appeared alongside the potential fault lines within the political and 
youth elite. While examining these fault lines it is crucial to note that 
political differences of opinion within Hungarian youth organizations 
reflect divisions within not the entire Hungarian youth community, but 
the conflicts primarily concern the inner circles of youth elites. The 
periodisation of the Hungarian youth organisations’ 
institutionalization process also includes the major changes that were 
the starting point of the new periods. The aim was not to provide a 
simple chronological order of the events, but also to interpret the 
background processes of these events. The turning points are also 
often related to a conflict. In this chapter, it was attempted to present 
the different viewpoints, positions and strategies in these conflicts. 
The third and final chapter describes my experience on the 
study trip to Kolozsvár (Cluj-Napoca). The new, unconventional 
forms of civil initiatives that were met during the study trip are also 
presented.

3. Conclusions and results 
 
In the theoretical chapter, I present the theoretical and 
conceptual approaches of the national minority youth. In the chapter 
that contains the periodisation of the Hungarian youth organisations’ 
institutionalization, two more phenomena are described. On one hand, 
the potential fault lines within the political and youth elite; and on the 
other hand, the disputed issues that arose in the community life of the 
Hungarian youth in Transylvania. 
During the foundation period (1989–1990), a number of 
mass movements formed. This initial momentum led to the 
establishment of many organisations with thousands of members, in 
addition mass events were organised. The youth organisation network 
was comprised of grassroots organisations that started springing up 
simultaneously with the older generations’ organisations. Within a 
relatively short period of time, youth organisations started interacting 
with each other and, after a number of national-level meetings, 
established their first umbrella organisations. They cooperated closely 
with the older generations, but at the same time they preserved their 
independence. The youth organised itself on a national principle and 
addressed not only generational issues, but were actively involved 
from the very beginning in solving issues which concern the whole 
Hungarian community in Transylvania, for example the fight for 
ethnic rights.

The pioneering period (1990–1995) could be best described 
with a general perception of “everything is possible”. The decisive 
moment of this period was the integration of MISZSZ into the 
RMDSZ structure, which was practically the integration of the 
Hungarian youth elite into the political life of the community. The 
main fault line appeared between two youth elite groups: those who 
engaged in politics and those who engaged in civil activities and 
distanced themselves from politics. 
During the period of pact-based politics (1995–2001), the 
organisation network was based on agreements between the pillars 
that represented youth organisations (organisations representing 
university students, high school students, religious youth etc.). The 
most important aspect of these agreements was to establish common 
representation. Another important agreement in this period was the 
cooperation of RMDSZ and MIT, the youth umbrella organisation that 
strived to represent the whole Hungarian youth in Romania. The most 
important conflicts of this period are also tied to RMDSZ. 
The main conflict that defined the fragmentation period of 
the Hungarian youth organisations in Transylvania (after 2001) was 
their attitude towards RMDSZ. The Hungarian subculture in Romania 
formed along an ethnic fault line. However, another fault line emerged 
in the subculture as well, and it institutionalised by the end of the 
2000’s. It was created by the conflict between central RMDSZ 
leadership and its internal opposition. The regional opposition 
between Catholics and Protestants was much less significant. 
Conflicts generated by the generation gap had also weakened. The

“radical-moderate” conflict, however, had a strong structuring force. 
On one hand, central RMDSZ leadership (“the moderates”) focused 
mainly on the integration of the Hungarians living in Transylvania into 
Romanian society. On the other hand, RMDSZ opposition (“the 
radicals”) called for the integration of the Hungarians living in 
Transylvania as an autonomous society. This opposition was 
reproduced in the Hungarian youth organisation network of Romania, 
creating a political culture of fragmentation, characterised by 
conflicts, and goals that are often mutually exclusive. The internal 
opposition and the MIT member organisations, that took the “radical” 
side distanced themselves from RMDSZ leadership. This conflict led 
to MIT voluntarily leaving the RMDSZ Council of Representatives 
(SZKT). They thought that leaving the Council will weaken RMDSZ 
legitimacy, as without the youth, RMDSZ will no longer represent the 
whole Hungarian community in Transylvania. 
RMDSZ initially handed over youth policy competences to 
the self-organising youth. Their key youth partners were first MISZSZ 
and OMDSZ, then MIT. The most important RMDSZ decision 
regarding youth policies was to institutionalize their relationship with 
youth umbrella organisations that incorporated quasi-independently 
organised and functioning youth organisations. By this, youth 
organisations became involved in the decision-making structure of 
RMDSZ. By the 2000’s, tensions were rising between MIT and 
RMDSZ. The situation had become untenable not only for the youth, 
but also for RMDSZ. This is when RMDSZ started to address youth 
policy issues. The first and most important step was to support the

establishment of a youth umbrella organisation (MIÉRT) that 
incorporates the youth organisations that are willing to cooperate with 
RMDSZ. Thus, MIÉRT filled up the vacuum in RMDSZ legitimacy 
that arose after MIT left. 
After the pioneering era, the Hungarian youth organisation 
network pluralised. In parallel with RMDSZ becoming a political 
party, the attitude towards RMDSZ became the main fault line 
between youth organisations. This became a structural factor that led 
to a political and, later, organisational fragmentation. In parallel with 
the escalation of the conflict between MIT and RMDSZ, a new youth 
structure arose. This ended a period of institutionalization in the youth 
organisation network. The period between 1995 and 2001 was defined 
by a push for a common representation. After the fragmentation of the 
youth organisation network, however, the youth organisations that 
shared ideologies and cooperated with RMDSZ separated from those 
who distanced themselves from RMDSZ and played the role of the

A kutatás előzményei, problémafelvetés 
Az egyetlen, még a középkor folyamán nyomtatásban is megjelent magyar 
szerzőségű Szentföld-leírás, a Compendiosa descriptio, mely Jeruzsálemi 
utazás címmel Holl Béla fordításában 1983 óta magyar nyelven is olvasható, 
rövid időn belül két bécsi kiadást is megért. 
Ám míg az 1521-es nyomtatvány (RMK III 189, illetve RMK III 5107, P 
változat) Pécsváradi Gábor obszerváns ferencest jelöli meg szerzőként, a 
dátum nélkül, de ugyanazon nyomdában megjelent kötet (RMK III 75, F 
változat) kolofonjában Farnádi Miklós ferences neve áll. 
A mű a két kiadás tisztázatlan viszonya miatt Toldy Ferenc és Széchy 
Károly értékelése nyomán az első magyar plágiumügyként vonult be az 
irodalomtörténetbe. A Széchy 1897-es tanulmánya után kialakult 
konszenzust, miszerint Farnádi eltulajdonította volna Pécsváradi szövegét, 
vagyis hogy F tulajdonképpen a P-ből a személyes élmények eltávolítása 
révén létrehozott rövidített és álnéven megjelentetett kiadás, Magyarországon 
mintegy százhúsz éven keresztül nem kérdőjelezte meg senki, jóllehet F P-
nél korábbi datálása már a zarándokirodalom első német nyelvű 
bibliográfiáiban is megjelent. 
Nem segítette a mű recepcióját, hogy bár Hatala Péter a P-ből részleteket 
jelentetett meg a Magyar Sionban, az eredeti szöveg középkori latinságához 
hűtlen, az irodalmi megformáltságú részleteket pedig rendre kihagyó 
közlemények a Compendiosa descriptio egészéről hamis képet közvetítettek. 
Ezt a hamis képet végül Holl Béla korrigálta, aki a P változat szövegét 
bevezetővel és jegyzetekkel ellátott fordításában tette magyar nyelven is 
elérhetővé, majd a bevezetőt később önálló tanulmánnyá bővítve külön is 
megjelentette. Az alapos kutatást végző Holl rámutatott a mű legfontosabb 
 
jellegzetességeire: a négy égtájnak megfelelő négy rész és az öt pontra 
tagolódó fejezetek által meghatározott különleges szerkezetre. Míg az előbbit 
ferences jellegzetességnek ítélte, ekképpen pedig az 1507–1508-as 
zarándoklatát megörökítő Anselmus de Cracovia Szentföld-leírásával 
rokonította, az utóbbiban a korábbi szakirodalom alapján a skolasztikus 
érvelésmód felosztásait azonosította. Feltárta a mű forrásainak nagy részét, 
köztük az idézés nélkül felhasznált apokrif evangéliumokból eredő 
jeleneteket is, az egyiptomi helyek leírásához használt forrásként pedig 
Berhnard Breydenbach művét jelölte meg. Fontos eredménye továbbá, hogy 
ismét a köztudatba hozta Pécsváradi Bánffy Jánoshoz írt levelét. Érdemei 
mellett azonban meg kell említeni, hogy fordítása sok tekintetben eltér az 
eredeti szövegtől és tárgyi tévedésektől sem mentes. 
A kritikai kiadás elkészítésének feladata azonban, amit a latin szöveg 
nehéz hozzáférhetősége és a középkori magyar irodalomban tapasztalható 
egyedisége egyaránt indokolt, olyan adatokkal szembesített, melyek a két 
változat közti viszony kérdését fölébe helyezték a ,,ki plagizált kit?'' 
dilemmájának. Világossá vált ugyanis F genetikai elsőbbsége és az 
átdolgozás jelentős volta, így azonban választ kellett adni a két kiadás 
létrejöttének okára és arra, hogy F mennyiben tekinthető Pécsváradi 
művének. A kollacionálás során derült ki továbbá, hogy F előszava egy 
négyosztatú, a mű végén található térképről, valamint a szent helyeken 
elnyerhető búcsúk kettős, a teljes és a 7 év 7 böjtös búcsút megkülönböztető 
rendszeréről  is említést tesz. Mindez megmagyarázza a négy részes 
szerkezetet, de új források vizsgálatát tette szükségessé: a térképekét. 
 
A követett módszertan 
A disszertáció Pécsváradi Gábor életének és az alsólendvai Bánffyakhoz 
fűződő kapcsolatának bemutatásával vázolja fel a ferences szerzetes 
Szentföld-leírása, a Compendiosa descriptio történelmi hátterét, amit a 
recepciótörténet áttekintése követ. A Bánffyakkal való viszony és a nemesi 
család életében megjelenő udvari kultúra vizsgálatát Bánffy Jakab lovagi 
zarándoklata, Pécsváradinak a Bánffyaknál betöltött kápláni tiszte valamint a 
Bánffy Jánoshoz írt levélben olvasható, a törökökre vonatkozó információk 
tették szükségessé. 
A dolgozat fő része egy a Compendiosa descriptio mindkét változatában 
szereplő szövegrészt, a szent tűz liturgiájának leírását elemzi, melynek eddig 
azonosítatlan forrását egy barlettai liturgikus kódex Charles Kohler által 
kiadott szövegében találtam meg. Az ebben az ordináriuskönyvben,   
valamint az F és P változatokban fennmaradt szövegek filológiai elemzésével 
tisztázom F és P kapcsolatát, minthogy a részlet szemben a Compendiosa 
descriptio más, akár nyomtatásban is elérhető forrásaival, nem volt könnyen 
hozzáférhető. 
A térképre tett F-ben található  utalások vizsgálatával rekonstruálom a 
Compendiosa descriptióhoz használt eltűnt térkép tulajdonságait és 
megvizsgálom, hogy a szóba jöhető Szentföldet ábrázoló térképek közül 
melyikhez állhatott legközelebb. 
A források alapos vizsgálatával és az eddig azonosítatlan vendégszövegek 
feltárásával elsősorban Pécsváradinak a saját rendtársai által írt művekhez, 
valamint a prédikációs segédeszközökhöz való viszonyát mutatom be. 
Az ötös tagolás mint szervezőelv érvényre juttatását a mellékletként 
csatolt táblázattal és az átdolgozás mértékének számszerűsítésével 
 
vizsgálom, támaszkodva a középkori magyarországi valamint közép-európai 
mnemotechnikai traktátusokról szóló irodalom megállapításaira. 
Megvizsgálom továbbá a címrendszerben végbement változtatásokat, a 
címek összevonását és szétválasztását, valamint annak lehetőségét, hogy 
állhat-e számszimbolikai megfontolás akár F, akár P fejezeteinek száma 
mögött. 
A két változat közti szintaktikai, szóválasztásbeli és stilisztikai eltérések 
kimutatásával egyrészt Pécsváradi latinságát jellemzem, másrészt olyan 
nyelvi jellegzetességeket mutatok ki, melyek újabb érvekkel támasztják alá 
azt, hogy a Compendiosa descriptio szövegének alaprétege nem Pécsváradi 
saját fogalmazása, hanem az átvett szöveg F-ben még csekély, P-ben viszont 
teljes körű átdolgozáson ment keresztül. 
A ferences rendi vezetésnek a szerzetesek irodalmi működésére vonatkozó 
szabályait valamint a szerzőség mibenlétére vonatkozó véleményeket 
ismertetve azt vizsgálom, hogy mi indokolhatta azt a plágium vádjához 
vezető ellentmondást, hogy F szerzője névtelen – jóllehet a kiadást a 
személyes élmények egyértelműen Pécsváradihoz kötik – , míg P a címlapon 
(Pécsváradi) Gábort szerepelteti. Ezek után innen, a szerzőség kívánalmai 
felől vizsgálom a szerkezeti változtatásokat. 
Új eredmények 
A disszertáció Pécsváradi életére vonatkozóan csak néhány részletet tudott 
feltárni: két párhuzamos útinapló alapján valószínűsíthető, hogy Bánffy 
Jakabbal együtt hagyta el a Szentföldet és Cipruson együtt látogatták meg a 
jobb lator keresztjét őrző kolostort. Ami a lovagi kultúra jelenlétét illeti, míg 
ennek megléte a Bánffyiak családi hagyományában gazdagon adatolható, a 
 
Compendiosa descriptióban  ez egyáltalán nincs jelen. Ennek megfelelően a 
keresztesek tetteinek tárgyalása is rendkívül felületes és moralizáló: Buillon 
Godfried valós alakján kívül csak Nagy Károly és Szent István keresztes 
hadjáratainak legendái nyernek említést. 
A szent tűz liturgiájáról szóló, a barlettai kódexben megőrzött részt 
összevetve F és P szövegével világossá válik, hogy F nem származhatott P-
ből. F paleográfiailag magyarázható következetesen elrontott alakjai alapján 
F egy kézirat első nyomtatott kiadása. A két nyomtatvány közti hasonlóság 
miatt viszont P nyomtatvány feltétlenül F nyomtatvány alapján készült. Az 
F-ből hiányzó, ugyanakkor P-be az elveszett térképről bekerült adatok miatt 
azonban P-hez  csak F és a kézirat együttes használata vezethetett. 
Összefoglalva F nem P alapján készült rövidített változat, hanem a Pécs-
váradi által a Szentföldről hozott és részben általa átdolgozott, de a 
felhasznált források jellegzetességeit a P-hez képest jobban megőrző 
kéziratos szöveg első kiadása, P pedig F és az eredeti kézirat alapján készült 
átdolgozott kiadás. 
Az F előszavában említett Compendium locorum Terre Sancte című, 
mindkét kiadásból hiányzó térkép a egy – leginkább a virtuális zarándoklatok 
végzéséhez használt – Jeruzsálemet távlatból, a szentföldi szent helyeket és a 
Földközi tengert pedig körülötte ábrázoló, Breydenbach Jeruzsálem-
térképéhez hasonló, a világtájakat is feltüntető ábra volt, melyen a szent város 
számos részlete kivehető volt, látszott például rajta a Porta Aurea kettős íve. 
Ugyanakkor az F-ben a Szent Sír-templomot és a betlehemi születés 
barlangját belülről ábrázoló képekre tett utalások alapján az elveszett térkép 
legközelebbi rokonát Hermannus Borculus töredékesen fennmaradt és a 
Compendiosa descriptiónál későbbi térképében fedezhetjük fel, melyre e két 
 
ábrát is rátették. A Compendiosa descriptio tehát írott tanúja egy a ferencesek 
által kifejlesztett térképnek, mely vagy egyenesen a Breydenbach-térkép 
ihletője volt, vagy a Breydenbach-térkép alapján készült, de a Borculus-
térképet inspiráló ábra volt. 
A virtuális zarándoklatok főleg németalföldi női kolostorokban végzett 
gyakorlata a szent helyeket ábrázoló képek vagy a kolostorok megfelelő 
helyein mondott imádságok, vagy a passió mintájára végzett testgyakorlatok 
voltak, melyekhez Szentföldleírásokból átalakított szövegeket használtak. Az 
átalakítás a helyek sorrendjének megváltoztatásával, a személyes élmények 
kiiktatásával, a pontos hosszúsági adatok bekerülésével, valamint a 
népnyelvre fordítással, esetleg a nőnemű névmások megjelenésével járt. A 
pontos méretadatok az állomások elhelyezését, a kerengőn megtett lépések 
számát vagy metrikus ereklyék létrehozását szolgálták. 
A Compendiosa descriptio esetében regisztrálhatjuk egyrészt a szentföldi 
női szentek hangsúlyos jelenlétét és a távolsági adatok meglétét illetve 
bővülését, másrészt találhatunk utalást mind a megcélzott női 
olvasóközönségre, mint arra a célra, hogy a szöveg a testi és a lelki 
zarándoklatra egyaránt szolgáljon, ugyanakkor mind a személyes élmények 
bővítése, mind a szerkezet földrajzi meghatározottsága ellentmond a 
nyugaton leírt gyakorlatnak. A középkori Magyarországról csak a pálosok 
esetében van adatunk a passió eseményeinek megfelelően felállított 
oltárokról, de metrikus ereklye a Bánffyak rokonságában bizonyosan létezett. 
Vagyis míg a térkép a mű négy égtáj szerinti tagolásának, a virtuális 
zarándoklatok koncepciója a Pécsváradi eszközölte változtatások egy 
részének szolgál magyarázatul. 
 
Az átdolgozás legszembetűnőbb jellegzetességeként viszont a fejezetek 
részint már F-ben is meglévő ötös tagolásának szinte teljes körű 
érvényesítése jelölhető meg, mely fejezetek leválasztásához illetve 
összevonásához vezetett. Míg a korábbi szakirodalom ennek eredetét a 
skolasztikus felosztásokban látta, a disszertáció a mnemotechnikában 
alkalmazott ötösökkel magyarázza. Ezt támasztják alá azok a Kiss Farkas 
Gábor és szerzőtársai által feltárt korabeli elméleti szövegek, melyek az 
obszerváns ferencesekhez több szálon is kötődnek. Ez ugyanakkor nem mond 
ellent a virtuális zarándoklatoknak, hiszen egyrészt a mnemotechnikai 
eljárások is képzeletbeli tér felépítésével operáltak, másrészt zarándokút 
alapján is építettek fel mnemotechnikai tereket. 
A disszertáció kimutatja korábban nem azonosított liturgikus és 
jámborsági forrásoknak, köztük Pécsváradi rendtársainak, Temesvári Pelbárt 
és Laskai Osvát műveinek használatát. A megadott locusok pontos 
ellenőrzése alapján egyrészt alátámasztást nyer, hogy P javítja F-et, valamint 
hogy a többször is idézett két fő forrás (Alphonsus de Spina és Nicolaus de 
Lyra művei) használata széleskörűbb a Pécsváradi által bevallottnál. 
A glossa ordinariából , a glossa interlinearisból és Nicolaus de Lyrából 
vett idézetek együttes előfordulása egy nyomtatott glosszás bibliát 
feltételeznek, ezekbe rendszerint Mathias Döringnek a Nicolaus de Lyrát az 
azt kijavító Paulus Burgensisszel szemben védelmébe vevő művét is 
belefoglalták. A szerzőség mibenlétének a szakirodalomban eddig említés 
nélkül hagyott tárgyalása Döringnek az 1. zsoltárnál olvasható, a zsoltárok 
szerzőségéről írott szakasza. Döring Arisztotelészen nyugvó alaptételeit a 
nem kinyilatkoztatott szövegekre alkalmazva az elsődleges szerzőnek nem az 
irodalmi alapanyag, hanem az irodalmi forma létrehozója tekintendő. Ez 
 
alapján az ötös tagolás kialakítása döntő fontosságú a szerzői név 
vállalásához. 
A nyelvi és stilisztikai elemzés alapján megállapítható, hogy F-hez 
viszonyítva P egy lényegesen, Pécsváradi szerzői intencióinak és nyelvi 
kompetenciájának megfelelően átalakított, bővített változata. A két kiadás 
közti számos és következetes szintaktikai, szókincs- és megfogalmazásbeli 
eltérés azt támasztja alá, hogy F szövegének nagy része nem Pécsváradi saját 
fogalmazása. Ez egyrészt jól illeszkedik a filológiai elemzés tanulságaihoz, 
másrészt kiemeli Pécsváradinak a megfelelő nyelvi megformáltság 
kialakítására tett, néhol rendkívül gazdag stilisztikai eszköztárral dolgozó 
igyekezetét. 
A dolgozat megállapításai a Compendiosa descriptiónak a disszertációval 
együtt elkészült kritikai kiadásának szövegén és forrásazonosításain 
alapulnak. Függelékként a P gyöngyösi példányához kötött Peregrinatio 
Laurentii de Taar című költemény elemzése áll, forrását az eddigi kutatással 
szemben nem Mandeville-ben, hanem Walter de Chatillon Alexandreisében 
látjuk.
