On the Edge of Historiography 
Sources and Hungarica in Marin Sanudo’s diary 
Thesis booklet
I. The purpose of research 
The aim of my doctoral research was to provide a comprehensive presentation of 
the diary-like contemporary historical work (Diarii) of Marin Sanudo (1466–1536). 
Sanudo, a Venetian nobleman, recorded events and information about the city from 
1496 to 1533 in his diary, which comprises 59 manuscript volumes. Because of the 
confidentiality of the diplomatic material contained in the diary, the Council of Ten, 
Venice's state security body, sealed the manuscript after Sanudo's death, and the text 
was forgotten for more than 200 years. The Diarii was rediscovered at the end of the 
18th century when international interest in Sanudo's work was revived. Scholars from 
many countries compiled national collections of sources from the diary, and Sanudo's 
minor works have started to be published. The work on the publication of Diarii began 
in 1879. Later on, the collections of sources were organized around certain historical 
events and phenomena, such as the Protestant Reformation, and Sanudo's work was also 
studied from the point of view of literature and linguistics. 
In parallel with international research on Sanudo, Hungarian late medieval 
scholars have been intensively studying the diary since the mid-nineteenth century when 
the autographs, which were transported to Vienna as spoils of war, were first examined 
and extracted by Antal Gévay and later by Gusztáv Wenzel. Their interest was triggered 
by the lack of sources in Hungary from the 15-16th centuries, which the Sanudo diary 
mitigates at several points. In the last century and a half, Hungarian research has been 
based primarily on Wenzel's publication of selected sources, which means that, on the 
one hand, texts out of context can be misunderstood and, on the other, texts worthy of 
attention in terms of new research directions can avoid the attention of researchers. 
Later, the Italianist Magda Jászay, a researcher of Italian-Hungarian relations, and the 
historian Gábor Barta, an acknowledged expert on the Szapolyai era, exploited the 
Diarii, at this time based on the complete edition. 
From a literary-historical point of view, the study of the Diarii provides an 
opportunity to explore a unique and hitherto only tangentially studied historiographical 
genre, the diary as a work of contemporary history, and to explore more thoroughly the 
historiographical program of Renaissance Venice. 
The historical implications of this research are presented in terms of the potential 
challenges of using the Sanudo diary, drawing attention to the genre diversity of the 
often considered homogeneous text fragments, their different textological positions, and 
the resulting differences in their source value. 
II. Studies performed 
At the beginning of the research, I tried to explore the widest possible international 
literature on Sanudo's life and on the Diarii, the recent Sanudo dissertations of different 
approaches (linguistic and genre history) which were a great help to me. 
I have compiled a detailed biography and career profile of Sanudo, and in 
connection with the latter, I have collected available texts and publications of his work 
to support future research focusing on the Diarii. Sanudo's work on the city of Venice 
known as Cronachetta was particularly helpful to me to interpret the functions of the 
councils, offices, and magistrates that also appear in the Diarii, and to imagine the city 
sites at the time. 
In addition to the Cronachetta, the history of Venice periodized by the life of the 
Doges, the commentaries on the War of Ferrara (1482–1484), and the narrative of the 
campaign in Italy of the French King Charles VIII helped to outline the 
historiographical program that would culminate in the reworking of the material 
collected in the Diarii into a chronicle or rather a historia. Sanudo wanted to achieve 
the status of the official historian of Venice, but his abilities and social opportunities 
prevented him from achieving his goal. 
I have concentrated my investigations on the Diarii specifically on the corpus of 
texts from the period 1526–1533, which was not covered by Gusztáv Wenzel's 
sourcebook. Although Wenzel had collected a large number of sources from the period 
ending at the battle of Mohács (1526), a review of these sources was timely in the 
context of the approaching 500th anniversary. By reading through the diaries and 
collecting the Hungarica sources, I was able to gain a comprehensive picture of the 
diversity of the texts included in the diaries. 
By examining the different source groups (diary entries based on personal 
impressions, official correspondence, private letters, etc.) separately, I was able to 
discover the specificities of Sanudo's source management and his working methods. In 
the case of embedded texts in different textological states – summarised, translated, or 
(partially) copied – I tried to find other versions of the texts, sometimes the original, as 
far as possible, in order to compare them and examine Sanudo's textual procedures. In 
these cases, I used the tools of philological criticism. I have also used philological 
methods to compare the Diarii's text with independently discovered archival documents 
in the course of specifically historical research, in several cases identifying textual 
variants that can be compared with the diary excerpts. 
III. Results 
Marin Sanudo may not have rivaled the humanist geniuses in terms of talent and 
artistic creativity, but his stubborn diligence literally made him a part of the cultural 
history of the Republic of Venice. His monumental diary and smaller historical works 
are monuments to the Serenissima at the height of its power. Given the Republic's 
position in the European information network, which at the time was practically 
worldwide, its history would not be complete without the news and information that 
flowed through it, which has also survived in the pages of the Diarii. 
In Venice, a rich but purpose-driven, propagandistic tradition of historiography 
developed in the early 16th century, which motivated Sanudo to create, but which he 
could not identify with. Although, as a Venetian nobleman, he himself wished to 
promote the salvation of the Republic, he did not do so by uncritical glorification, but 
by collecting and transmitting intellectual and artistic values and teaching future 
generations to avoid the vicissitudes of political life. He sought to achieve his former 
aim by his particular method of listing and collecting, and the latter by writing in the 
vernacular and using a style close to the direct, chancery style of expression. While 
Sanudo did not achieve public success in his lifetime, ignoring the demands of the 
Venetian aristocracy, the political establishment recognized the value of his work, 
which is an important factor in the intact survival of the Diarii. And by the end of the 
16th century, the cultural transformation had arrived, which stimulated interest in 
Sanudo's descriptive writings, quasi-guidebooks. Francesco Sansovino, one of the most 
prominent exponents of this genre, also profited from the available Sanudo works, 
especially the Cronachetta. 
Sanudo's interest in epigraphy and his collections of texts, his unique library, and 
the artistic and scientific curiosities that adorned his home, together with his work as a 
historian, especially his Diarii, which had previously been regarded as a dry set of data, 
allow us to appreciate his work in a different light. Looking at the sources of the diary, 
which is richly packed with embedded texts, it is clear that Sanudo used his diary to 
preserve and chronologically organize his extraordinary written and even occasionally 
visual documents. In this light, the Diarii can be seen not as a set of data but as a cabinet 
of curiosities, in which Marin Sanudo collected a wide range of texts, from printed 
matter reporting on inexplicable atmospheric phenomena and freaks to political poems 
and the special intitulatio, introductory self-naming of Sultan Suleiman's letters. 
However, the order provided by the collection and the passage of time cannot 
replace the unified narrative that the audience expects from historians. It is for this 
reason that the most frequent criticism of Sanudo's work, especially the Diarii, is his 
method of not narrating events in context, since, according to Benedetto Croce, 'where 
there is no narrative [...] there is no history', that is, the moral meaning of historiography, 
which was indeed required in Renaissance society, can be achieved through the plotting 
and narrativization of events. In light of recent research, however, we are not forced to 
exclude Diarii from historiography. In examining the possibilities and techniques of 
narrativizing historical events, Hayden White identifies several levels of historical 
representation, using historiography in a narrow sense, as the designation of the highest 
level, below which is the chronicle, and below both the annals. White defines four 
criteria for historiography: full narrativity, a proper concern for the judicious handling 
of evidence, respect for the chronological order of events, and the revelation of their 
structure, and their order of meaning. From this alone it is clear that Sanudo has reached 
a lower level of historical representation because, despite treating his sources with full 
respect and the objectivity one would expect, he has not investigated the internal 
structure and motives of events, he can only guarantee the original order of events in 
the case of the events in Venice and, finally – and most importantly – he does not create 
a narrative sequence of events, he does not plot them. This presupposes that certain 
elements of the collected material and events are highlighted, which Sanudo, as we have 
seen, did not do; the pages of Diarii are equally weighted with news and fake news, 
printed matter and letters, rumors, and diplomatic dispatches. Sanudo's diary can thus 
be classified as an anti-narrative form of historical representation, annals in White's 
terms, or at most a naive chronicle. They can also be acceptable alternatives to 
historiography, which is necessarily linked to a state and driven by some social system. 
The failure of Sanudo's career is explained precisely by his critical distance from the 
Venetian state, even though he had a need to moralize and communicate moral values, 
and this is evident in his objectives and in his comments on the failings of the Venetian 
institutional system. But he could not do this without a moral basis that idealized a state, 
and so he was stuck at the level of an annals-like historical representation, driven only 
by the passage of time, which at the same time allowed a universal, non-cultural 
communication of events. Thus, when Sanudo's diary is degradingly called a data set 
by scholars, they are calling it to account for narrative procedures whose possible results 
could only be extracted from the historical facts readily available in Diarii through 
painstaking work. 
They have been preserved almost as primary sources, often in the form of official 
correspondence and dispatches between states and within the Republic of Venice, in the 
form of public avvisos and private letters, framed by a Sanudo-like narrative of Venetian 
urban life and word-of-mouth gossips. Nevertheless, the sources included must be 
examined with particular care and philological acuity, since they are mediated versions 
of texts. The effective evaluation is made difficult by specific situations such as 
Sanudo's stay in Verona. In order to accurately assess the value of the data recorded in 
the diary during such periods, it is essential to know the biography of the author and 
possible intermediary sources. But even in the routinely accumulated material of thirty-
seven years of work, there are several versions of a text. It is useful to compare and 
replace these texts with copies that have survived in fragments, to distinguish between 
excerpted copies and more extensive summaries like Sanudo's, and not to ignore simple 
extracts and mentions of documents that contain essential data and may point to other 
possible sources. 
The importance of the Sanudo diary was recognized in time by the Hungarian 
scientific community, and it was used successfully in historical, literary, and cultural 
studies. The central importance of the sources preserved in the Diarii was already 
emphasized by Gusztáv Wenzel in the context of the diaries of the envoys, the 
characterization of the nobles of Hungary, and the state of affairs in the country. Tracing 
the loss of territory in the southern part of Hungary during the period of the Ottoman 
conquest is particularly important and can also be performed using Sanudo’s work in a 
credible and detailed manner. In addition to relevant and authoritative data, the Diarii 
also provides unique – though in all likelihood incorrect – sources for historical myths 
such as the legend about sending György Dózsa's severed head to Szeged. This, and the 
pseudo-news about the battle of Mohács, clearly point to the dangers of Diarii's 
unreflective use, which can be avoided by keeping in mind the complexity of the work, 
Sanudo's working method, and the communication habits of the time. 
In this way, we can gain sources thought to be lost, more detailed biographies, 
more solid research into the history of diplomacy, a more accurate picture of late-
medieval news circulation, and many other results from further research into Diarii, as 
I have shown it in several case studies. The missions of the diplomat and prelate Fülöp 
Csulai Móré to Venice have been explored more thoroughly than ever before through 
more extensive source research, and the trips of 1508 and 1509–1510, previously 
considered as one mission, have been separated. The only text attributed to Csulai Móré, 
but of dubious authorship, can certainly be ascribed to him in the light of the Sanudo 
entries.  
By examining the sources for the battle of Mohács in a broader time frame, 
including the Sanudo texts written after September 1526 and the related archival 
sources, it was possible to gain a more accurate picture of the information behind the 
various politically influenced narratives of the battle. The research also shed light on 
the activities of János Statileo in Mohács. It is also in the context of the battle of Mohács 
that we can observe the workings of the Venetian papal legate and his attempts to 
influence the flow of information, who was part of the only diplomatic network 
comparable to that of Venice – the system of papal nuncios and legates – in a highly 
complex and charged political situation. 
As for the period following Mohács, Gábor Barta was extremely meticulous in his 
work, processing almost all of the Sanudo data, while the letters of Szapolyai copied 
into the Diarii also made it possible in some cases to clarify the itinerary of the monarch.

1 Aims
The primary aim of the thesis is to create and evaluate automatic dictionary
building methods for two Finno-Ugric languages (Finnish and Hungarian),
and to establish which one of these methods performs best in terms of their
precision. A further goal is to improve interoperability between many existing
resources for these languages and to provide a language-independent database
which can be utilized as the basis of an automatically reversible online dic-
tionary. Another objective is the creation of a language learning application,
which would help learners of Finnish and learners of Hungarian to practice
different aspects of these languages.
2 Data and methods
The methods presented in this thesis use three kinds of resources: Wiktionary,
WordNet and OPUS. Each of the proposed scripts parses the contents of one
of these resources and obtains bilingual translation candidates and other lex-
ical information, such as definitions and example sentences for Finnish and
Hungarian.
Resources: WordNet (Miller 1995) is a lexical database which organizes
nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs into synonym sets (sets of words, syn-
onyms describing a specific concept). The English WordNet was translated
into several languages, including Finnish (Lindén and Carlson 2010) andHun-
garian (Miháltz et al. 2008). Wiktionary (https://www.wiktionary.org/) is an
online multilingual dictionary. It is a crowd-sourced project, and has many
language editions. The language of the edition defines the target language of
the dictionary, and any language can serve as source language in this resource.
Three editions ofWiktionary (the Finnish, the Hungarian and the English lan-
guage editions) were used in order to obtain bilingual translation pairs, defi-
nitions and example sentences. The OPUS corpus (Tiedemann and Nygaard
2004) is a collection of publicly available data. It contains several types of
resources, such as parallel texts and bilingual word alignments for several
language pairs, including the Finnish–Hungarian pair.
Natural Language Processing Tools: During the research work, it was
observed that the bilingual translation candidates obtained from OPUS reach
low quality at the preliminary evaluation, because they were extracted from
running texts, and the list contained different word forms instead of lemmata.
To investigate the impact of lemmatization in this case, it was necessary to
utilize language processing tools. In another phase of the project, in order
to generate language learning exercises, example sentences needed to be tok-

enized, lemmatized, morphologically analyzed, and dependency parsed. For
these tasks, I used the emtsv (Indig et al. 2019) text processing pipeline for
Hungarian, and the omorfi (Pirinen 2015) and uralicNLP (Hämäläinen 2019)
tools for Finnish.
3 The structure and the main theses of the dissertation
The dissertation is comprised of six chapters. The first chapter gives a short
introduction to the main topics of the research work, including lexicography,
vocabulary acquisition and Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL).
The second chapter explores the different dictionary building methods and
proposes three new alternative solutions to extract Finnish–Hungarian bilin-
gual translation pairs from three different resources. Chapter 3 describes the
language-independent database that has been created to contain the lexical
data obtained with the help of the proposed methods. In the next chapter, the
importance and benefits of CALL are emphasized. In Chapter 5, the compo-
nents of the proposed framework (Finno-Ugric Lexical Resources (FULR))
are introduced. The last chapter concludes the work, summarizes the results,
and contains directions for further research. The main theses of the research
work and a more detailed description of the main chapters are provided below.
Chapter 2 describes and compares the main resources and approaches which
can be used to build bilingual dictionaries with automatic methods. Finnish
and Hungarian have several existing lexical resources that had not been ex-
ploited before to automatically generate translation pairs. These resources,
as well as the utilized language processing tools for these languages are de-
scribed in this chapter. The proposed dictionary building methods that parse
the above-mentioned resources are presented in detail. The results of the in-
termediate evaluation are reported. The main theses of this chapter are the
following:
1. I created Wiktionary Parser, a script that parses the Finnish and Hun-
garianWiktionary editions and collects bilingual translation candidates
with their part-of-speech information, as well as monolingual lemma–
definition and lemma–example sentence pairs. The script is freely
available and the resulting data set is uploaded to the FULR database,
where every data point will be manually validated.
2. I developed WordNet Connector, a script that links the Finnish and
Hungarian WordNets. It collects bilingual translation candidates by
connecting the synsets of these two databases. The algorithm can also

extract monolingual synonym lists, as well as Hungarian definitions and
example sentences from the Hungarian database. The FinnishWordNet
does not contain these kinds of data. The script is freely available and
the resulting data set is uploaded to the FULR database, where every
data point will be manually validated.
3. I created a script called OPUS Extractor that extracts bilingual word
pairs using the Finnish and Hungarian word alignments. It is possible
to sort the word pairs by their co-occurence number or in alphabetical
order. The script is freely available and the resulting data set is up-
loaded to the FULR database, where every data point will be manually
validated.
4. I lemmatized the data set extracted from the OPUS corpus, since the
word alignments were generated from running texts, resulting in only
6.25% precision. As it was also observed by Simon and Mittelholcz
(2017), it was found that the extracted translation candidates contained
many suffixed word forms, which resulted in a low quality proto-
dictionary. Lemmatization led to a 73.13% decrease in the number
of word pairs, and resulted in 93.137% precision. This result clearly
shows that the precision of bilingual translation pair extraction from
running texts in morphologically rich languages can greatly benefit
from lemmatization, when the word pairs are intended to be included
in a dictionary as headwords.
5. By validating hundreds of translation candidates, synonym pairs, defi-
nitions and example sentences, it was possible to compare the precision
of the applied methods. I showed that the highest precision could be
achieved by the Wiktionary Parser method proposed in this disser-
tation, followed by one of the modes (extract) of the wikt2dict tool
developed by Ács et al. (2013). This proves that the crowd-sourced
resource, Wiktionary, contains mostly high-quality, reliable data.
Chapter 3 presents the details of a language-independent lexicographical
database that has been created to store the data extracted by the dictionary
building methods. A relational database was chosen over the XML data struc-
ture to ensure that multiple users can manipulate the data simultaneously. The
tables of the proposed database, as well as its views and triggers are described
in detail. The main result of this chapter can be summarized as follows:
6. I designed and developed a lexicographical, MariaDB-based relational
database that stores data in a language-independent way. This reposi-

tory of data stores all kinds of information (translation candidates, ex-
ample sentences, definitions, and synonyms) in a universal way. The
main units of the proposed structure are entities, as opposed to tradi-
tional lexicography approaches which consider entries as the basic units
of the dictionary. This database schema makes it possible to create an
automatically reversible bilingual dictionary from the obtained data set.
Chapter 4 first introduces how computers can help language learners mas-
ter foreign languages. This chapter presents the evolution of CALL and the
typical activities it can offer to learners, as well as its place in the syllabus of
language classrooms. It describes how natural language processing can fur-
ther improve the quality of CALL applications. At the end of this chapter,
some of the limitations of this field are mentioned.
Chapter 5 elaborates on the proposed framework and its components. Fol-
lowing the introductory section, the steps of manual entity validation are pre-
sented in the proposed dictionary writing system, that is intended to facilitate
the dictionary editing process. The macrostructure and the microstructure of
the online bilingual dictionary are described. The following section provides a
detailed description of the CALL application and its two modules: a flashcard
module that learners can use to learn new vocabulary items, and a cloze tasks
module which aims to help learners practice different grammar aspects of both
Finnish and Hungarian. The theses related to this chapter are the following:
7. I created the FULR (Finno-Ugric Lexical Resources) platform, which
consists of three components: an online bilingual dictionary, a dictio-
nary writing system and a language learning application.
8. I designed the online bilingual dictionary interface for learners of
Finnish and learners of Hungarian. This dictionary builds on the data
set stored in the language-independent database described earlier. The
generation of the dictionary entries happens automatically from the en-
tities and relations found in the database defined by certain rules.
9. I developed the dictionary writing system that allows editors to easily
manipulate the data, without advanced IT knowledge.
10. I created the language learning application that incorporates two mod-
ules: a flashcard module and a module with cloze exercises. The flash-
card module facilitates vocabulary acquisition and offers two types of
cards: monolingual cards with the help of lemma–definition pairs, and
bilingual flashcards with translation pairs. The cloze exercises can help
learners practice different grammar aspects. I determined some rules to

describe three Finnish and three Hungarian grammar aspects in order to
automatically generate examples for these exercise types.
11. A subset of the examples for each cloze exercise has been validated
and the predetermined rules proved to generate the tasks very precisely
(with above 90% precision in all exercise types except one). This
method can be applied to alleviate the tedious manual creation of such
exercises by language instructors.
One of the prominent theoretical results of the thesis is the evaluation and
comparison of different dictionary building methods for morphologically rich
languages. Newmethods have been developed and described, and the positive
impact of lemmatization on data gathered from non-lemmatized corpora has
been proved.
The practical outcome of the dissertation is a language-independent frame-
work that incorporates an online dictionary, a dictionary writing system, and
a language learning application. This framework can be extended with data
in other Finno-Ugric languages in the future. The language learning applica-
tion and the database is structured in a way that learners’ responses are stored
anonymously. This collected learner data set is expected to provide valuable
information for future research that aims to investigate the difficulties that
learners face when learning these languages.

CÉLKITŰZÉS 
 
Dolgozatomban a magyar műemlékvédelem 
történetének kezdeti periódusát, az intézményesülését 
követő bő három évtizedet vizsgáltam. E három évtized a 
műemlékvédelem egyik legmozgalmasabb, 
legösszetettebb, igen jelentős időszaka volt. A korban a 
műemlékvédelem — csakúgy, mint a művészettörténet — 
egy újonnan kialakuló, az autonómiájáért küzdő, 
ambiciózus tudományág volt, melynek életében fontos 
mérföldkő a Műemlékek Ideiglenes Bizottságának 1872-
ben történő megalakulása. Az építészeti forma 
tudományos igényű tanulmányozása és az ennek nyomán 
virágba boruló historizmus; a stílustisztaság mint idea; a 
kiegyezést követő gazdasági prosperitás; a millenniumi 
reprezentációs törekvések és egy fiatal tudományág 
útkeresése — megannyi egyéb tényező mellett — a 
korban együttesen alakították a műemlékvédelem elvi és 
gyakorlati irányát.

A műemlékvédelem historiográfiájában széles körben 
elfogadott az a narratíva, hogy a 19-20. század fordulója 
paradigmaváltást hozott a műemlékvédelemben, 
miszerint a purista törekvéseket felváltották a ma is 
korszerűnek tartott elvek, valamint, hogy ez a folyamat 
egyértelmű, végleges és radikális változást hozott. 
Dolgozatomban azt vizsgálom, hogy ez a változás valóban 
ilyen módon zajlott-e le. 
Kutatásom fókuszában a kisebb volumenű, kevesebb 
pénzből megvalósuló műemlékhelyreállítások állnak, 
mert meglátásom szerint a nagy és emblematikus 
helyreállítások mellett ezek is kitűnően tükrözik a kor 
műemléki elveit. Dolgozatomban tizenöt ilyen „kisebb” 
emlék helyreállítás-történetét dolgozom fel, melyek a 
következőek: Csaroda, református templom; Harina, 
evangélikus templom; Keszthely, plébániatemplom; 
Kusaly, református templom; Máriafalva, Mária 
Mennybemenetele-templom; Miskolc, Avasi református 
templom; Nagybánya, Szent István-templom; Ócsa, 
református templom; Palágykomoróc, református

templom; Pozsony, katolikus főgimnázium (temploma) 
„Clarissa”-tornya; Pozsony, a ferences templom tornya; 
Pozsony, Szent Márton-székesegyház; Szászsebes, 
evangélikus templom; Százd, Szent Miklós-templom;

A KUTATÁS ISMERTETÉSE ÉS MÓDSZEREI 
 
A dolgozatomban vizsgált periódus kezdő időhatárát a 
Műemlékek Ideiglenes Bizottságának alapítására, 1872-re 
helyeztem, lezárását pedig Czobor Béla bizottsági előadói 
tisztségének és egyben életének is végét jelentő 1904. 
évben jelöltem ki.  
Forrásaim alapját — az esetlegesen rendelkezésre álló 
szakirodalom mellett — a Műemlékek Ideiglenes 
Bizottsága (MIB) és a Műemlékek Országos Bizottsága 
(MOB) irat- és tervanyaga jelentette. A felmérési- és 
helyreállítási tervek mellett a bizottsági tagok 
felterjesztései, jelentései, javaslatai, műleírásai és a 
költségvetések számos apró adatot szolgáltattak arról,

miként gondolkodtak a témáról a vizsgált korban. 
Vizsgálódásaim fókuszába a fentiekben megnevezett 
iratokban megnyilvánuló építési szándék került — 
esetenként függetlenül annak megvalósulásától. 
Kutatásom másik forrásanyagát a korabeli folyóiratokban 
közölt vélemények, tudósítások és a sajnálatosan kevés 
számú elméleti írások jelentették.  
Külön fejezetet szenteltem a műemlék-helyreállítások 
pénzügyi forrásainak, mert ez a szempont is igen 
meghatározó tényezőnek bizonyult.  
A vizsgált helyreállításokat a műemlékvédelem elmélete 
európai és hazai alakulásának áttekintésével helyeztem 
kontextusba. 
A műemlékvédelemben történt változások nem csak a 
helyreállításokban és írott véleményekben, hanem az 
intézményi háttér átalakulásában is tetten érhetők, ezért 
ezt a szempontot szintén külön fejezetben vizsgáltam.  
Végül rövid áttekintést tettem a műemlékvédelem és az a 
19. századi identitáspolitika kapcsolata témában.

TÉZISEK 
 
1. Tézis Bizonyos szakirodalmi források általános 
szemlélete, miszerint a 19. — 20. sz. fordulójával a 
historizáló purizmus korszaka is lezárult, és azt a későbbi 
charták irányába forduló, mai szemléletünk szerint 
progresszívnek tekintett műemlékvédelmi elvek váltották 
fel, revízióra szorul, és árnyalandó.  
 
A 19. sz. utolsó harmadában a műemléki 
helyreállítások esetében meghatározó purizmus 
hazánkban (is) fénykorát élte. Ehhez — sok egyéb ok 
mellett — három fő tényező járult hozzá:  
• Az épített örökségünk megszépítésében is 
megnyilvánuló millenniumi reprezentációs 
törekvések; ezzel összefüggésben  
• az erre fordított, az épület-helyreállításban soha 
addig nem látott pénzforrások; valamint  
• az építészeti stílusok legmagasabb-szintű forma- 
és szerkezetismerete.

A műemlékvédelmi helyreállítások terveit készítő 
építészeinknek mintegy „második anyanyelve” volt a 
gótikus stílus; megalapozott tudással terveztek történeti 
stílusban. Tudásukat hosszú tanulási folyamatban, 
gyakorta külföldi egyetemen és képzőművészeti 
tanulmányokkal kiegészítve szerezték meg, majd gyakorló 
építészként évtizedeken át kamatoztatták tudásukat. 
Nem volna reális és életszerű az az elvárás és az 
elgondolás, hogy ezek a szakemberek radikális változásra 
kényszerítsék magukat. Az új elvek gyakorlatba való 
átfordításához és megszilárdulásához — többek között — 
generációváltásra volt szükség.  
Amellett, hogy a műemlék-helyreállításokat 
tervező szakemberek e tudásról nem akartak és nem is 
tudtak lemondani, a műemlékvédelmi elvek szükséges 
változásának iránya a kortársak számára kezdetben talán 
nem is lehetett egyértelmű. A bizottsági jegyzőkönyvek 
tanúsága szerint úgy tűnik, a bizottsági tagok inkább 
gondoltak a purizmus finomhangolására, a túlkapások 
elkerülése melletti, kiegyensúlyozott fenntartására, mint

a purizmussal való radikális leszámolás lehetőségére. 
Amikor a századforduló táján — nyugat-európai hatásra 
— hazánkban is kezdett megfogalmazódni a purizmus 
kritikája, a valódi alternatívát jelentő helyreállítási 
módszerek kikristályosodására még évtizedekig várni 
kellett. Addig pedig a jól bevált eszközkészlet állt 
rendelkezésre.  
1896 után a nagy és látványos restaurálásokat 
(újjáépítéseket) a kisebb jelentőségű, egyszerűbb 
helyreállítások váltották fel, de a purizmusra való igény 
kimutathatóan megmarad. Téves volna a 
műemlékvédelmi elvek terén történt változást egy a 
kiindulópontot jelentő purizmusból a chartákra mutató, 
határozott irányú vektorként felrajzolni.

2. Tézis A helyreállítások sorsa és kimenetele sok esetben 
az anyagi forrásokon múlott.  
 
Az előző tézisponttal összefüggésben észre kell 
vennünk, hogy a stílustiszta restaurálásra, vagy kiépítésre 
való építtetői igény és műemlékvédelmi szándék mellett 
a legjelentősebb tényező, ami az adott helyreállítást 
meghatározta, számos esetben (kevés kivétellel 
jellemzően mindig) a kivitelezésre fordítható anyagi 
források megléte, avagy hiánya volt. Mind a „nagy,” mind 
a „kisebb” helyreállítások történetében, melyeket 
dolgozatomban feldolgoztam, újra, meg újra felbukkanó 
kérdés, hogy honnan lehet előteremteni a szükséges 
összeget, és mennyi áll rendelkezésre.  
Amint láttuk, a kivitelezéshez szükséges pénz 
többféle forrásból származhatott. A pénzügyi lehetőségek 
nem csak a helyreállítás tempóját, de sok esetben magát 
a programot, a terveket is befolyásolta. Több esetben is 
egyértelműen kimutatható, hogy a pénzügyi források 
szűkössége miatt egyszerűbb megoldásban kellett

gondolkodniuk, vagy, hogy több tervváltozat esetén a 
döntést azok bekerülési költsége határozta meg.  
A rendelkezésre álló írott források alapján — 
melyek közül jelen esetben a bizottsági iratanyag a 
legjelentősebb — bizton állíthatjuk, hogy a historizáló 
purizmus az emlékanyag még szélesebb körén hagyott 
volna nyomot; ha a hazai műemlékvédelemnek 
gazdagabb anyagi források álltak volna rendelkezésére, 
akkor ma a középkori épületállományunk zömét 
másmilyennek ismernénk.

3. Tézis A tudományos alapú és igényű épületkutatás már 
a 19. sz. utolsó harmadában is ismert és bevett gyakorlat 
volt.  
 
Amint az a forrásokból világosan kiolvasható, az 
épület-helyreállításokat a legtöbb esetben kutatás előzte 
meg. A helyreállítás terveinek elkészítésével megbízott 
építész alapos előtanulmányokat végzett, mielőtt 
tervezésbe kezdett volna. Ez összetett és alapos 
épületkutatást jelent. Kijelenthető, hogy a mai, 
korszerűnek nevezett épületkutatási módszerek 
mindegyike ismert és gyakorolt volt a vizsgált korban.  
Eszerint az épületről mindenekelőtt részletes és 
értelmező építészeti felmérést készítettek: alaprajzok, 
metszetek, homlokzati nézetek készültek. Már az 
állapotrögzítés során olyan mélységű ismeretekre tettek 
szert, ami nevezhető megfigyelés alapú épületkutatásnak.  
Több ízben értesültünk a bizottságnak tett 
jelentésekből, hogy a tervező építéstörténeti forrásokat, 
információkat gyűjtött az adott épületről.

Ismert volt a roncsolásos falkutatás, melynek 
során bizonyos épületrészek vizsgálatához feltárták a 
falszövetet. Bizonyos esetekben a (a falkutatás 
kiterjesztéseként is felfogható) kivitelezés közben 
feltáruló jelenségek módosították a terveket és 
alakították helyreállítás folytatását.  
Ismert volt a falfestésvizsgálat, sőt, a 
festékrétegek laboratóriumi vizsgálata is.  
Láttuk, hogy a kutatásnak szinte mindig része volt 
a szerkezetvizsgálat, az állékonyságra irányuló 
vizsgálatok, vagyis a statikai állapotfelmérés.  
Végül, a kivitelezést megelőzően és közben 
törekedtek a dokumentálásra.

4. Tézis A dolgozatomban vizsgált periódusban a 
Műemlékek Ideiglenes, majd Országos Bizottságában a 
mérnöki szemlélet és szempontrendszer felerősödött.  
 
 Tulajdonképpen úgy is fogalmazhatnánk: 
szakszerűbbé vált, ami a mérnöki, építészi jelleg 
felerősödését jelenti a nem-építészi jelleggel szemben a 
Bizottságon belül. Ez a változás leginkább a rajzi 
gyűjtemény gyarapítása irányában, az épületek mérnöki 
igényű felmérése iránti igény egyre markánsabbá 
válásában ragadható meg. Mint láttuk, a kültagok 
képzőművészeti igénnyel előadott épületfelmérései egyre 
kevésbé feleltek meg az azokat bíráló építész bizottsági 
tagok elvárásainak. Ezzel összefüggésben jelent meg az 
épületek objektív felvétele szolgálatában a fotográfia is.  
Ez a változás személyi változásokkal járt együtt, 
illetve a generációváltás előfeltétele volt ennek a 
változásnak. Az alapító generáció; Ipolyi Arnold, Pulszky 
Ferenc és Rómer Flóris halálával, de legfőképp 
Henszlmann 1888-ban bekövetkezett halálával a

Bizottság építész tagjai elérkezettnek érezték az időt, 
hogy a művészettörténészekkel és régészekkel szemben a 
műemlékvédelem mérnöki, építészi szemléletét 
megerősítsék.
