A doktori disszertáció tézisei 
 
Célkitűzés 
A dolgozat tárgya Ferenczy Béni szobrászművész életműve. A 
klasszikus értelemben vett művészmonográfia elkészítése helyett 
azonban ezúttal a kutatás központi irányát a művészi karrierút 
feltérképezésében és az azt befolyásoló hatások feltárásában 
határoztam meg. Vizsgálatom során arra keresem a választ, hogy a 
családi háttér, a baráti kapcsolatok, az egyéni döntések és 
választások, illetve a szobrász által követett művészeti elvek 
együttese miként hatott Ferenczy képzőművészeti megbízásaira, 
kiállítási lehetőségeire, a hazai kulturális közéletben betöltött 
hivatalos szerepköreire, mindenkori politikai megítélésére és 
művészettörténeti recepciójára. Elsősorban tehát azokra a 
tényezőkre koncentrálok, melyek a konkrét művészeti 
teljesítményen túl befolyásolták az életpálya alakulását. Ilyen 
módon teszek kísérletet a társadalomban élő szobrász portréjának 
megrajzolására. 
 
Források és módszertan 
Ferenczy Béni művészetével nagyszámú szakirodalom 
foglalkozik, azonban annak jelentős része a hatvanas években és 
az azt követő néhány évtizedben keletkezett. A megjelent írások a

művészettörténeti feldolgozó munkára jellemzően hagyományos 
műközpontú elemzésekre és egy-egy alkotói periódus tárgyilagos 
bemutatására irányulnak. A széles körben elérhető nagyívű 
feldolgozás azonban elmaradt, az életmű feltárásának mértéke 
pedig egyenetlenül oszlik el a szobrász egyes korszakai között. 
Ami a művészi életút egészét illeti, néhány kidolgozottabb 
résztémát leszámítva a publikált szövegekben jellemzően 
ugyanazok a kismonografikus terjedelemben összefoglalható 
toposzok térnek vissza, melyeket még az életmű első interpretálói 
vetettek papírra. A szövegek keletkezése óta nagymennyiségű 
írásos dokumentum, levéltári anyag vált hozzáférhetővé, melynek 
kritikai szemléletű feldolgozására és az életműbe való beépítésére 
ez idáig nem került sor.  
 Munkám gerincét a szobrász adattári kutatások során 
összegyűjtött leveleinek szisztematikus feldolgozása, továbbá a 
közeli hozzátartozók, ismerősök, barátok és művésztársak által írt 
levelek, visszaemlékezések feltérképezése adta. Ennek 
segítségével átfogó képet kaptam Ferenczy Béni széles körű 
kapcsolati hálójáról, amely a képzőművészeti életen túl az egész 
korabeli hazai kulturális és politikai szférára kiterjedt. A szobrász 
alakja szervesen épült be a 20. századi Magyarország eseménydús 
történetébe, és az ezzel járó kölcsönhatások alapjaiban határozták 
meg a művészi pályája alakulását. A korszak tágabb körüljárása, 
az életmű elhelyezése a hazai kulturális élet viszonyrendszerében 
a hagyományos könyvtári kutatómunka mellett adattári

nyilvántartásban fennmaradt iratok, jegyzőkönyvek és többezer 
korabeli újságcikk áttanulmányozásával valósult meg. A kijelölt 
megközelítési mód szükségképpen hozta magával a Ferenczy-
recepció sajtóanyagokra támaszkodó átfogó ismertetését is, 
amelyet a terjedelmi megkötések okán 1967-ig, a művész haláláig 
bezárólag végeztem el. A művész sajtómegjelenéseiben a cenzúra 
jelenlétét kitüntetett figyelemmel követtem nyomon. Elsősorban 
az érdekelt, hogy egyes életrajzi adatokat – mint például a 
tanulmányok és az emigráció külföldi állomásai – az aktuális 
politikai környezet függvényében miként emeltek ki, vagy 
toldottak meg hamis információkkal. 
 A karrierív vizsgálata két fontos pilléren nyugszik. Az 
életpálya alakulásának objektív analízise mellett ugyanis az 
elemzés magába foglalja annak felmérését is, hogy a szobrász 
maga miként értékelte és élte meg a hazai művészeti élet 
alakulását, saját sikereit, kudarcait, művészeti lehetőségeit és 
anyagi helyzetét. Ennek feltérképezéséhez a Ferenczy Béni által írt 
levelek, interjúk és visszaemlékezések nyújtottak segítséget. Az 
elsődleges források fölhasználása során – azok személyes és 
mélyen emberi természete miatt – törekedtem a kritikai attitűd 
alkalmazására, a bennük foglalt információk leellenőrzésére, 
szükség esetén felülbírálására. 
 Az életút részletekbe menő rekonstrukciója már 
terjedelmét tekintve is sokszorosa annak az adatmennyiségnek,

amit a Ferenczy-szakirodalom eddig elérhetővé tett számunkra. Az 
elvégzett munka pedig lehetőséget teremtett arra, hogy a karrierív 
mozgatórugóit keresve érdemi következtetéseket vonjak le. 
 
A disszertáció főbb tartalmi egységei és azok problémafelvetései 
Alapvetően jól körülírhatók azok a tényezők, melyek a konkrét 
művészeti teljesítményen túl hozzájárultak a szobrász szakmai 
sikereihez, illetve kudarcaihoz. A dolgozat felépítése 
kronologikus, az egyes fejezetek azonban különböző 
problémakörök kidomborítására fókuszálnak. 
 Az első fejezetekben a sajátos művészi nevelés és a 
nepotizmus különböző megnyilvánulási formáinak az életműre 
gyakorolt hatását kutatom. Miként alakult a Ferenczy-gyerekek 
pályaválasztása, milyen előnyökkel és hátrányokkal járt a 
veleszületett tehetség felvállalása és megélése? Milyen szabályok 
mentén formálódott a család belső alkotói közössége és mekkora 
arányban befolyásolta a fiatalok művészi indulását az édesapa által 
nyújtott szellemi, financiális és kapcsolati tőkét is felsorakoztató 
támogatás? Elsősorban ezekre a kérdésekre kerestem a választ. A 
művészeti képzés állomásainak rekonstruálása során pedig arra 
voltam kíváncsi, hogy a mecénás apa figurájának hatásán túl kik 
és milyen úton támogatták, befolyásolták az ifjú 
szobrásznövendéket. Továbbá arra, hogy ezek a családi kapcsolati 
hálón keresztül elérhető lehetőségek mennyiben tértek el attól a

gyakorlattól, amely Ferenczy Béni kortársainak művészi indulását 
általánosságban jellemezte.  
 Ferenczy Béni művészi pályája különösen szerencsés 
csillagzat alatt vette kezdetét. A festőóriás apa személye, a 
kiemelkedő kulturális közeget biztosító családi légkör és 
nagybányai festőiskola közelsége egyaránt hozzájárult ahhoz, 
hogy testvéreivel együtt kivételes lehetőségekben részesülve 
merüljön el a modern művészet gyakorlati és elméleti 
ismereteiben. Művészi indulását elsősorban a Ferenczy-név 
kitüntetett státusza, illetve kedvezően alakuló kapcsolati hálója 
befolyásolta. Ismerősei révén gyorsan otthonra talált a budapesti 
művészeti életben, a magyar kultúrtörténet azon rövid 
periódusában, amely nyitottsággal fogadta az avantgárd művészeti 
mozgalmak hazai megnyilvánulásait. Édesanyja által indukált 
baloldali beállítottsága, bennfentes kapcsolata a Szépművészeti 
Múzeum munkatársaival és a Vasárnapi Kör tagjaival, illetve az 
általa képviselt művészeti irányok egyaránt közre játszottak abban, 
hogy a Tanácsköztársaság napjai alatt Ferenczy Béni fiatal kora 
ellenére meghatározó helyet szerzett magának a művészeti élet 
irányítói között. Ez a rövid korai csúcspont politikai súlya okán az 
életút egészére meghatározó hatást gyakorolt. 
 Az 1910-es években a fiatal szobrászban még aligha 
tudatosult, hogy a Ferenczy név milyen kivételes helyzetet biztosít 
számára a magyar művészeti életben. A kommün bukását követő

emigrációs időszakban azonban neki is meg kellett birkóznia a 
névtelen művész mindennapos megélhetésért folyó küzdelmeivel. 
A korszak vizsgálatánál a hangsúly átkerül az idegenből érkező 
szobrász általános nehézségeinek, munka- és kiállítási 
lehetőségeinek taglalására. Mivel dolgozatomban Ferenczy 
karrierútját elsősorban a magyarországi művészeti szcéna 
viszonyrendszere felől vizsgálom, a külföldön töltött évek 
feltérképezése során a korábbi kutatásokkal szemben a szobrász és 
az anyaország kapcsolatára helyezem a hangsúlyt. Az életmű két 
világháború közé eső periódusát ily módon az egzisztenciális 
gondok ellenére hazatérési vágyát mindinkább későbbre halasztó, 
válaszútjai között őrlődő művész oldala felől közelítem meg.  
 Ferenczy Béni az emigráció állomásait tekintve 
tipikusnak mondható utat járt be, hiszen a Felvidék városai, Bécs, 
Berlin és Moszkva egyaránt kedvelt célpontoknak számítottak a 
hazáját elhagyó baloldali értelmiség köreiben.  Bár az 1926-os 
hazavándorlási hullám őt is lázba hozta, a Horthy-rendszer felé 
irányuló ellenszenve és a magyarországi művészeti munkák 
kilátástalansága folyamatosan hátráltatta abban, hogy hazatérési 
vágyát tettekre váltsa. Az emigráció időszakát segítő ismerősök – 
az 1919-ben hatalmon lévő magyar kulturális elit tagjai, illetve az 
általuk megismert bécsi baráti kör – nagyban hozzájárultak 
azokhoz a művészeti megbízásokhoz, melyekben a szobrász 
részesült a kint töltött évek alatt. Ennek ellenére nem sikerül 
elérnie azt a kitörési pontot, amely elhozta volna számára a

nemzetközi karrier kiteljesedését. Az osztrák művészettörténet 
elsősorban a Schiele-síremlék készítőjeként tartja számon a nevét. 
A Szovjetunióban eltöltött négy év személyes tapasztalatai 
alapjaiban változtatták meg a keleti nagyhatalomhoz fűződő 
viszonyulását, ami nagyban befolyásolta a Rákosi-korszak totális 
diktatúrája alatt meghozott későbbi döntéseit. 
 Ferenczy csak 1938 után, Ausztria annektálását követve 
tért vissza végleg Magyarországra. A második világháború évei 
alatt a hazai sajtóorgánumokban hol az arisztokratikus Ferenczy-
család nyugaton karriert építő, immár érett művészként jelentkező 
kiemelkedő sarjaként szerepelt, hol a kommunista éra egykori 
kegyeltjeként, akinek szovjet kapcsolatai hatják át alkotói pályáját. 
A német megszállás alatt feleségével együtt a civil zsidómentés 
tevékeny résztvevői voltak. A szobrász ebben az időben került 
közeli kapcsolatba Szent-Györgyi Albert körével. Ugyan a direkt 
politikai szerepvállalás ekkor már távol állt tőle, a háború utáni 
években ismét vezető pozíciókat töltött be a művészeti életben. 
Helyet kapott a frissen megalakult Művészeti Tanácsban és 
kinevezték a Képzőművészeti Főiskola szobrász-tanárává. Az 
1949 után kiépülő szovjet típusú rendszerrel azonban elvi 
összetűzésbe került, aminek következtében menesztették állásából 
az akkor már hatvanadik életévében járó művészt.  
 A képzőművészeti élet peremére szorított szobrász a 
sztálini diktatúra árnyékában elsősorban egyházművészeti

munkákból és könyvillusztrációs feladatokból tartotta fönn magát. 
A nélkülözés időszaka azonban csak néhány évig tartott. Bár a 
művész tragédiákkal tűzdelt életét hangsúlyozó ismeretterjesztő 
írások előszeretettel festik le az 1950-es éveket egy, a szobrász 
számára gyötrelmes, anyagi terhekkel sújtott időszaknak, nem 
mehetünk el szó nélkül amellett a tény mellett, hogy 1955-re neve 
ismét a legfoglalkoztatottabb, legtöbbet kereső művészek között 
szerepelt. Történt mindez anélkül, hogy megkötötte volna azokat a 
kompromisszumokat, melyeket a korszak kultúrpolitikája várt el 
szobrászaitól, akik számára evidenciaként kínálkoztak a 
különböző politikai emlékművek vagy monumentális 
munkásábrázolások készítésére irányuló feladatok. 
 Az 1938 és 1956 közé eső időszakot tárgyaló fejezetekben 
arra teszek kísérletet, hogy körbejárjam azt a rendkívül hullámzó 
viszonyrendszert, ami a szobrászt és az őt körülvevő hazai 
kulturális teret jellemezte. Az életműhöz tapadó toposzok 
árnyalása érdekében igyekszem kategorikusan sorra venni a mester 
által betöltött pozíciókat, a kapott állami megbízásokat és 
kitüntetéseket. Emellett fontosnak tartom nyomon követni azt is, 
hogy a sajtó és a kortárs művészeti irodalom Ferenczy alakjához 
való viszonyulása miként alakult, változott ezekben az években. 
 Az 1956-os forradalom kudarca a Nagy Imre-féle politika 
közvetlen támogatójaként mélyen megrendítette, ami nagyban 
hozzájárulhatott az egészségi állapotában beállt drasztikus

változáshoz. A művész szervezetét 1956 novemberében 
megtámadó agyi érkatasztrófával vette kezdetét az életmű utolsó, 
betegséggel terhelt fejezete. A dolgozat befejező szakasza a 
balkezes korszak alkotói tevékenységének ismertetésén túl kiterjed 
az 1956-1967 között működő kulturális sajtó és művészeti 
irodalom Ferenczy-recepciójának bemutatására is. 
 Ferenczy életének utolsó, betegség által korlátozott, de 
alkotásban gazdag évtizede a forradalom leverése utáni művészi 
újjászületés szimbolikus példája, amely meghatározó helyet foglalt 
el a korszak kulturális életében. Élete diadalmenetek és 
hullámvölgyek folyamatos váltakozásával telt, betegsége után 
azonban a személyéhez és művészetéhez való hozzáállás is sokat 
változott. A politikai nyomással dacoló, független szellemű, önálló 
művészi elveket valló tanárral ellentétben a beszédképességétől és 
jobbkeze alkotóképességétől megfosztott, főként 
virágcsendéleteket festő idős mester már nem szúrt szemet a 
hivatalos művészeti élet irányítóinak. Egészségügyi állapotából 
következően elvárásokat sem támasztottak személyével szemben. 
A kádári konszolidáció és a megváltozott külpolitikai helyzet 
jegyében a hivatalosan elfogadott stiláris keretek kibővültek, és a 
művészeti irodalomban is újraéledt korábbi nyugati művészeti 
hatások és kapcsolódások taglalása. A hatvanas évek kulturális 
változásai ily módon lehetővé tették, hogy Ferenczy Béni addigi 
életműve elfoglalja helyét az őt megillető helyen, a modern 
szobrászat Aristide Maillol által fémjelzett mediterrán ágának

hazai képviselőjeként. A mester alakja ezáltal élete utolsó 
évtizedében egy különleges kanonizáción ment keresztül, melyben 
egyszerre volt jelen az addigi életműnek kijáró méltó tisztelet 
megadása és a személyes tragédiából a művészet által kilábaló 
alkotó kultusza.  
 A dolgozat fejezetein végigfutó irányelv – amely a 
Ferenczy-életművet jellemző művészeti eredményeket és 
kudarcokat veszi sorra – szükségszerűen vezet el minket „a 
művészi siker” fogalmának felettébb ingoványos terepére. Jóllehet 
a művészek kortárs kritikája, kitüntetései és anyagi elismerései 
önmagukban nem sokat jelentenek a művészettörténet számára, 
mégis alapjaiban határozzák meg a karrierút alakulását és a 
megvalósult alkotások körét. Minden életmű a saját korában jön 
létre, annak viszonyai befolyásolják. A megszülető művek 
számtalan körülmény – egzisztenciális lehetőségek, esztétikai 
ízlés, kulturális közeg és politikai elvárások – együttes hatására 
realizálódnak, és ez nem csupán a megrendelésre készített, de a 
saját elgondolás alapján fogant képzőművészeti alkotásokra is 
érvényes. Éppen ezért dolgozatomban az életút mozgatórugóinak 
feltárása mellett központi szerepet kap annak a 
viszonyrendszernek a bemutatása is, ami a művészi karrier és az 
oeuvre között áll fönn.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THE THESIS 
This thesis, relying on historical contexts and physical evidence, will be one of the first 
investigations reflecting the converted pagan sites in Lebanon. During this study, there will be 
a focus on the converted sites with the aim to get into a deeper understanding of the Roman 
and Christian context and the spatial and structural relation between each transformed site. The 
main objective of this thesis is to have a general overview of the converted sites that exist in 
Lebanon and their distribution throughout the districts. A detailed analysis of the conversion 
types and their structural mechanisms is in order to understand the reasons that led to the usage 
of each type instead of the other. Whereas the structural and social fate of the converted temples 
will be as well highlighted relying on the site’s structural and religious features. It will 
eventually lead to a clearer approach of the historical and structural phase that was due between 
the Pagan past and the Christian future. 
METHODOLOGY 
The focus in this thesis is mainly on the religious transitional period from Paganism to 
Christianity and its ramifications on structural and architectural dimensions of the Empire. 
After the religious transformation of the Empire, the Roman temples were gradually rendered 
passive until re-used for different purposes, either religious, social, governmental or others. 
However, the conversion system in this study highlights solely the structural and architectural 
transformation of a Roman temple into a Christian church. 
The Roman structures were transformed while applying different architectural mechanisms. 
Three main categories of architectural conversion were highlighted in this thesis; the temple 
church, the temenos church and the spolia church. Around 80 converted sites exist all around 
the Lebanese territory, 17 temple churches, 7 temenos churches and around 57 spolia churches. 
The number of converted sites gathered throughout the years for this thesis is an assumingly 
accurate number. However, many converted sites are unexploited nor discovered. Thus, the 
number of the converted sites that exist on the Lebanese territory will be an ongoing process. 
Until nowadays, no detailed studies were fulfilled that collect a list of the converted sites that 
exist in Lebanon nor any study was executed that summarize the conversion types and their 
implemented structural mechanisms. 
Many documents helped with the categorization of the conversion typologies while others 
contributed in listing the converted sites that exist on the Lebanese territory. The research

approach that was adopted in this study was a mixed method approach, both qualitative and 
quantitative. Sites were sifted, roman temples that were converted into Christian churches were 
the ones used in this study from all of the pagan sites that exist in Lebanon. After gathering the 
study cases, they were divided and separated between each mechanism separately. Even with 
the presence of historical resources and reliable documentations, the majority of the converted 
sites lack materials and database related to their architectural and structural evolution 
throughout history. Other than ancient and modern documentation, the sites visits were one of 
the main factors that led to an accurate listing. 
This study covers the temples that were structurally converted during the chronological 
timeframe from the 4th century with the Byzantines until the end of the Ottoman’s rule on the 
Lebanese territory during the end of the 19th century. These 80 existing converted sites are 
nowadays either religiously passive and in form of ruins or are religiously active and 
structurally stable. This fate of the converted temples was mainly influenced by the type of 
transformation implemented during different timeframes. 16 temple churches exist nowadays 
on the Lebanese territory, highlighting 3 subcategories; the cella, the pronaos and the inverted 
temple churches, 5 of them are structurally and religiously active whereas the other 11 sites are 
completely abandoned and in an unstable structural state. All of the temenos churches are 
currently in form of ruins, whereas, all of the spolia churches are nowadays both religiously 
and structurally active. 
The physical site visits during the thesis’ analysis were one of the main features which resulted 
in the converted site’s data collection that mainly included photography, photogrammetry with 
a 2D documentation highlighted by a general survey with measurements. While working on 
this thesis, many software were used in order to ensure the rendering of the data needed; 
AutoCAD, Agisoft Metashape, 3DMax, Sketchup and photoshop. Both historical sources and 
archaeological documentations will eventually highlight the study needed for an outline of the 
converted sites and their implemented mechanisms that exist on the Lebanese territory.  
CONCLUSION 
1.The reasons/purposes of the conversion 
The process of conversion was dynamic, with motivations evolving over the centuries. During 
early Christian times, converting temples into churches led to two main scenarios, 
deconsecrating and purifying pagan buildings as well as urbanely expanding Christian

structures due to the availability of land and construction materials after the destruction of 
temples. Whereas during the medieval period, the main aim was to build Christian churches 
when the availability of construction materials was overflowing and financial funding was 
lacking. 
2. Chronology of execution of each of the types of conversion 
The structural conversion of pagan temples occurred at different stages, beginning with the rise 
of Christianity under the Byzantines, continuing through the medieval period, and even 
extending into the early modern era. The methods of conversion varied depending on the 
historical context and timing. Among the earliest types of conversion was the temenos church, 
implemented at the start of the empire’s Christianization. During the medieval period, the 
temple church, with its various subcategories, became the predominant conversion type. 
However, the spolia church remained the most widespread across centuries. Initially introduced 
during the Byzantine period, it reached its peak in modern times, as many abandoned and 
structurally unstable temples were dismantled and repurposed as building materials for newly 
constructed churches. 
3.The factors that led to the implementation of the most adequate type of conversion 
All of the conversion types exist on the Lebanese territory; however, several factors affected 
the choice of the type structurally executed. The chronology of the conversion, the temple’s 
proportion, the religious traditions established during the transformation period and the shrine’s 
structural state led to the selection of the most adequate type of conversion that differed through 
each site. All of the mentioned factors that affected the choice of the implemented type of 
conversion were indirectly linked. 
The temenos church was implemented for various reasons, often when the original shrine was 
in poor structural condition, had an irregular or small floor plan, or when remnants of pagan 
worship still influenced the site. This type of conversion allowed for a more adaptable 
approach, particularly in cases where paganism and Christianity coexisted within the same 
sacred space. In contrast, the temple church was applied when the temple's structural 
foundations remained intact, enabling a more straightforward transformation into a Christian 
place of worship. Lastly, the spolia church became prevalent during the medieval period, as 
many temples, after long periods of abandonment, suffered structural deterioration, leading to 
their dismantling and reuse as building materials for newly constructed Christian churches.

4. Functional durability of the resultant church 
In the East, the majority of the roman temples that once existed were either totally knocked 
down, with no current physical evidence of its existence, or were architecturally and religiously 
transformed, which had the biggest chance of endurance. The converted sites that survived 
until these days have two different architectural categories, these churches are either in form 
of ruins, due to abandonment, lack of preservation and renovation, or are still physically 
religiously active. One of the main factors that affected the functional durability of the resultant 
churches besides the chronology of their conversion is the religious continuity in the area of 
each converted temple. This difference of fate exists heavily in Lebanon especially in the sites 
that had a sequence of conversions that began during the period of the Romans, the Byzantines 
as well as in the medieval times where some new physical modifications occurred. The present 
general shape of these converted temples is unrecognizable for the majority of the temple 
churches, temenos churches and spolia churches, however its in situ foundations or its re-used 
blocks highlight the shrine’s original existence.  
5.Regional Distribution 
The converted sites are spread all over the Lebanese territory, however, the distribution of the 
structural mechanisms leading to conversion differed through districts, even the temples with 
proximate localities were differently converted. 
Regional characteristics are the reason that led to the large gap between the distribution of the 
conversion types through districts. 58% of the Lebanese spolia churches exist in the region of 
Mount Lebanon, especially in Jbeil, whereas in the Southern district no spolia churches were 
highlighted. The temple churches are similar to the spolia churches in their regional distribution 
process. Hence, from 17 temple churches that exist in Lebanon, 10 of them are located in the 
Mount Lebanon district. The same applies to the temenos churches which 3 out of 7 sites exist 
in Mount Lebanon as well. 
Several scenarios might have led to a major interval with the regional distribution of the 
conversion mechanisms. This variation was reflected as being a regional trend throughout each 
district. However, it could indicate the continuity of religious life that occurred in each region. 
This hypothesis is directly related to the invasions that happened during early times just after 
the start of the Empire’s conversion. Several scenarios were in order; the people who invaded 
each area might have had a different religion than the Christians or the areas with the absence 
of converted structures might have been abandoned for a long period before being re-

established during modern times. The Roman Empire was spread through all sectors of the 
Lebanese territory, however, this religious continuity, hence the structural one might not have 
been balanced all over its premises.

I. Background and objectives of the research 
 
Since the change of regime in 1989-90, there has been a boom in Hungarian church history, as 
evidenced by a number of major studies and monographs, several of which deal with the history 
of the Catholic Church after 1945. Nevertheless, there are still a number of topics that need to 
be addressed, including the history of the monastic orders and their grammar schools that 
continued to function during the political dictatorship. My thesis was intended to approach the 
history of these grammar schools. 
At the end of the Second World War, as a result of the communist persecution of 
religions in the states of Central and Eastern Europe, which came with the Soviet troops, 
religious schools could no longer function in the decades of occupation, with the exception of 
our country and Poland. The Polish Catholic high school diplomas were 'devalued' in the 
process of applying for higher education, and therefore an international comparison of my 
research was not possible. In Hungary, the nationalisation of religious schools (1948) and the 
reopening of four monastic orders (Benedictine, Franciscan, Piarist and Poor School Sisters) 
and their eight grammar schools (Pannonhalma, Győr, Esztergom, Szentendre, Budapest, 
Kecskemét and Debrecen) (1950) were the by-products of political games, and the operation of 
monastic education was characterised by a high degree of state control until the end of the Kádár 
era. 
The history of the orders and their schools after 1945 was examined earliest by Jenő 
Gergely and István Mészáros. Edited by Csaba Szabó and László Szigeti, the volume dealt in 
detail with the nationalisation of schools, Csaba Borsodi with the dissolution of the monastic 
orders, Attila Horváth with the educational policies of the Soviet-style dictatorship and 
Bernadett Wirthné Diera with elite Catholic education. Gabriella Pusztai studied the Svetits 
Institute in Debrecen, Gábor Ágoston Barkó and Kelemen Sárai-Szabó the Benedictine 
secondary school in Győr, and Gábor Sz. Nagy and Orsolya Sz. Nagy-Ring studied the 
secondary school in Pannonhalma. Zsófia Eszter Tóth and Béla Szalai Tóth and Zsófia Szalai 
Szalai have presented the history of events concerning certain schools. 
The primary aim of the research is to explore the social history of the eight Catholic 
grammar schools operating in Hungary during the political dictatorship. It seeks answers to 
questions such as how and to what extent the state controlled the functioning of these schools, 
their teachers, students and parents. What social backgrounds of parents enrolled their children 
in Catholic grammar schools. Can the influence of the state's efforts to dismantle the social 
structure of the Horthy era and to create a socialist social image of 'two classes, one layer' be 
 
 
discerned. What motivated or 'forced' parents to choose these schools, and can this choice be 
seen as an expression of resistance. 
What are the particularities of the school environment, and what kind of attractiveness 
has developed around the schools. In addition, I will draw on data to refute the perception-based 
hypothesis that even the children of party leaders attended Catholic grammar schools in the 
period under study. The political-historical background of the research, the persecution of the 
monastic orders, the 'agreement' between church and state, the differences between the Catholic 
education systems of the Horthy era and the party-state, and the Catholic High School Authority 
(KKF) are discussed. Separate chapters deal with the activities of the state security service 
targeting monks and the work of the State Ecclesiastical Office (ÁEH) 'managing' the orders 
and their education. The sixth chapter presents the institutional history of the grammar schools 
under study and the methodology of the thesis, followed by a presentation of the data obtained 
in the analysis as a separate unit. Finally, chapters supplementing the events through interviews 
and depicting the schools' catchment areas follow, before the conclusions of the dissertation. 
 
II. Research sources and methodology 
 
As the party leadership relied heavily on the work of the political police to carry out its will, 
the documents of the Historical Archives of the State Security Services (ÁBTL) provided an 
important source for my research, as they contain information on the surveillance of the orders 
and the influence they had on the atmosphere in schools. There are a good number of sources 
on the subject in the holdings of the ÁBTL, but the quantity varies from order to order. There 
is an abundance of material on the Benedictines, a smaller number on the Franciscans and 
Piarists, and scattered material on the school sisters. I have used case studies based on state 
security files to illustrate the life of the orders and their grammar schools. In selecting these 
sources, I have sought to understand the scale and impact of the extensive network of party-
state pressures that permeated and influenced the daily life of the schools. 
Compliance with the "operational principles" set by the party leadership was supervised 
by the State Office for Church Affairs (ÁEH), whose records are kept in the Hungarian National 
Archives - National Archives (MNL-OL). Of these, the general, presidential and secretly 
managed groups of documents have also proved to be an important source of information in my 
work. In my thesis, I have sought to sketch a comprehensive picture of the state management, 
perception and possibilities of the Catholic schools of the period with the help of several top 
secret reports from the 1970s. The successful educational work of the monastic grammar 
 
 
schools, the reduction of the number of students, the broad social contacts of the institutions 
and the struggle against all this in the context of church politics provide the backbone of the 
documents presented. 
In addition to the archival sources, the significant sources of the research are the 
grammar school registers, in which the personal data of the enrolled students, and later their 
school results, are recorded. During the research, I recorded in a database the occupation, place 
of residence and, where indicated, the noble title or academic degree of the parents of the first-
year student. This work was carried out in several phases (2012, 2021, 2024) and the analysis 
was carried out during the writing of the dissertation. Given the length of the period under study, 
the registers were processed in five-year increments. Based on Zsuzsa Ferge's stratification 
model, the data extracted from them were grouped into work-related groups, which made it 
easier to depict the social background of the student population. In some institutions in the first 
half of the 1950s, the occupation of parents before and after 1945 was recorded, which provided 
an opportunity to study social changes (declassification, mobility, elite replacement) after the 
Second World War. In addition to Zsuzsa Ferge, Rudolf Andorka has also studied in detail the 
structural changes in Hungarian society in the decades of socialism, and his literature has 
provided a basis for analysing the data. Fegre's model, together with Andorka's research 
findings, proved to be suitable for the study. 
I have also used the archives of the Pannonhalma Benedictine Archabbey, the Hungarian 
National Archives - Hajdú-Bihar County Archives and the archives of Győr-Moson-Sopron 
County Archives as additional sources. In addition, I supplemented the findings with interviews 
with monks and alumni, which means that the dissertation is mixed-method but essentially 
quantitative in nature. 
 
III. Results of the research 
 
1) The primary aim of my research was to map the history of the monastic grammar schools, 
and in particular the social background of their students. In this thesis, I have sought to present 
a broad perspective on the mechanisms of the party-state governance of the communities that 
functioned as teaching orders during this period. Accordingly, I aimed to present a synthesis of 
the available archival source material on the orders and their grammar schools, while at the 
same time processing the registers in order to provide a detailed analysis of the data and to make 
it accessible to the public. My objective was limited by the resources available, but it became 
clear that the party-state church policy wanted to treat the monastic grammar schools uniformly 
 
 
and to act centrally against them, while at the same time the state security wanted to control and 
influence the maintaining orders to the greatest extent possible. Despite their similarities and 
differences, all eight institutions developed into model schools in the period. In my view, the 
functioning and educational activities of the orders had an impact on the faithful, the illegal 
monks, their students and their families. Their social and religious influence was slow to 
develop and varied in degree from order to order, depending on their habitus. 
 
2) The evaluation of the data from the registers revealed that the social background of the 
students of the schools varies over time and between institutions, but the social background of 
the monastic grammar schools can be considered to be basically of skilled workers and 
intellectuals. In my opinion, this reflects the social changes of our decades of socialism; the 
emerging differences between social groups in the degree to which religiosity is manifested. 
The differences between institutions are due, on the one hand, to geographical differences and, 
on the other, to differences between orders and their schools. 
 
3) The effects of the steps taken to dismantle the social structure of the Horthy era can be traced 
in the civil registers. The presence in schools of the large number of families that were 
declassified at the beginning of the period under study can be clearly illustrated, just as the 
social structural movements of the socialist era can be clearly detected by analysing the work 
groups. This confirms the large-scale social change that was previously revealed following the 
Second World War. However, the impact of state efforts to create a 'two classes, one layer' 
socialist social image is less evident. 
 
4) The sources suggest that religious practice was a very important motivation for choosing a 
Catholic school. In many cases, it was the only way parents could hope to ensure their child's 
well-being, despite the disadvantages they faced. I have not been able to detect a motive of 
resistance to the party state in parents' decision to send their children to school, but awareness 
and sometimes compulsion, in the pursuit of higher education, have. 
 
5) As for the milieu of the high schools, interviews revealed that the most recurring memories 
of the students and their teachers on most nights were the adjectives "intellectual", "protective", 
"point of reference" and "religious". The constant presence of the monks was similarly recurring 
in the interviews as a person who provided security for the student.  The atmosphere of the 
college was characterised by the experience of 'living together'. The schools' catchment areas, 
 
 
with the exception of the high school in Szentendre, were found to be national in scope, but the 
extent of this varied from high school to high school. The largest numbers of students attended 
monastic gymnasiums in Budapest, with a high proportion of students attending all the 
institutions studied. 
 
6) I have been able to disprove the notion that the children of the party leaders attended Catholic 
high school between 1950 and 1990 by examining their birth records. No children of party 
leaders were included in the sample, the largest group of leaders being families that had been 
declassified in the early years of the period. 
 
7) As with the archival sources, my essay has had the least to say about the nuns' schools. 
However, it is important to point out that before 1945 they had a significant number of nuns 
and played a significant role in society, religiously, socially and educationally. After 1950, only 
two secondary schools for girls were run by women, reflecting the fact that the greatest victims 
of the party-state dictatorship's persecution of the church were the women monastic orders.
