Scandinavian culture and cultural rhetoric in Jorge Luis Borges’s «Undr»
In this article I deal with the presence of Scandinavian literature in Borges’s short story «Undr», and its cultural-rhetorical function in its perlocutionary influence on the reader with the establishment of a cultural-rhetorical communicative code that connects the reader and the author in the work. The role that the enigmatic word that constitutes the poetry of the Urns has in the fabric of the text is studied. Due to the metaliterary profile of this short story, attention is paid to the peculiar metaphors that are the kenningar and to the literary and cultural transfers carried out by the author. All this underpins a study of the text with the instrument of cultural rhetoric, so that the analysis itself contributes to the theory and to the location of cultural rhetoric within a transferential theory and critique.
Who lives there? Chrono-typological study of the ceramics of the Castle of La Caba (Aldeire, Granada)
The Castle of La Caba in Aldeire (Granada) is one of the main medieval fortresses of the Marquesado del Cenete. It has a chronology that spans from the eleventh to the fourteenth century, with the Nasrid period being the time of greatest activity and territorial relevance. In 2023, an archaeological excavation campaign was carried out for the first time by the Laboratory of Biocultural Archaeology - MEMOLab of the University of Granada. The aim of this work is to make a chrono-typological study the pottery from the archaeological excavation. This is the first step to explore the phases of occupation of the site, in order to relate it to the questions about the historical settlement of the region, extending them to the great debates of the Archaeology of al-Andalu
Sumerian Sphragistics at the Crossroads Between Past Mistakes and Future Insights
This paper explores two interrelated topics. First, it considers the outdated nature of the information currently available on Early Bronze Age cylinder seals in Mesopotamia, as reflected in both scholarly publications and institutional and museum databases. Second, it proposes new approaches to these objects by considering the possibilities they present in light of current historiographical trends
Some theoretical and methodological reflections on the importance of the microstratigraphic record in the study of Iberian rituality
This contribution reflects on the suitability of incorporating a coherent interdisciplinary strategy in which physicochemical analysis and soil micromorphology play a key role in understanding the formation processes of the archaeological record and reconstructing the biography of the site. To this end, these approaches and methods have been explored in depth, focusing on Iberian sanctuaries (6th–1st centuries BCE) on the Iberian Peninsula and considering recent research examples where such analyses have proven essential for studying the social and symbolic dynamics associated with ritual practices. Moreover, these methods are highly significant for identifying human activities and processes of occupation and abandonment, which are often only discernible and distinguishable at a microscale of analysis.
The Trade of Geometric and Arcaic Greek pottery in the Upper Guadiana: a Review from the New Finds of Alarcos (Ciudad Real)
This article presents a previously unpublished assemblage of seven fragments of Archaic Greek pottery recovered at Alarcos. In connection with this study, all available data concerning Geometric and Archaic Greek ceramic finds from the Upper Guadiana have been systematically reviewed, bringing the total corpus to thirteen items. Beyond their typological and stylistic classification, these materials are examined within the broader economic, social, and cultural framework of the Iron Age in the Upper Guadiana, with the aim of assessing their social and economic significance, as well as tracing the commercial routes that conveyed such vessels from major coastal emporia into the interior of the Iberian Peninsula. The evidence indicates that the earliest imports, attributable to Iron Age I, derived from Huelva, thereby underscoring the role of this center as a conduit of commercial and cultural exchange and clarifying the integration of the Upper Guadiana within the Tartessian sphere. With the decline of Huelva’s mercantile primacy and the emergence of Iberian culture, supply networks subsequently reoriented towards the southeast of the peninsula and the trading ports of the Mediterranean littoral. From a social perspective, the presence of Greek luxury tableware at Alarcos attests to the existence of a powerful local elite, capable of acquiring prestige goods that were, in some instances, of restricted circulation within both the Iberian and wider Mediterranean contexts
Localization, Topography, and Archaeological Approach to the Urban Quarries of Tusculum (Italy)
This study aims to undertake, for the first time, a systematic topographical survey of the quarries of the city of Tusculum, through the archaeological investigation of the areas used for the extraction of construction materials. To this end, the quarries have been geolocated using GPS coordinates, classified, and their relationship with the communication routes associated with their use has been analysed. The connection with the road network is essential for reconstructing the productive cycles, managing the extraction processes, and understanding the circulation and distribution of materials within the framework of urban history. Additionally, an archaeological analysis has been carried out of the various quarry faces identified in the area between the acropolis and the plain of the monumental zone, which were exploited following a stepped terrace system. Finally, a macroscopic and microscopic petrographic characterisation of the stone materials has been conducted, along with a preliminary attempt to identify the relationship between the quarries and the construction techniques employed in the buildings of Tusculum
The Origin of the Metal in a Hispanic Quadrigatus (ca. 215-214 BC)
Recently it was has been proposed that some issues of Republican quadrigati (or anonymous didrachms) were struck in Hispania between 215-214 BC, during the Second Punic War. Therefore, these would represent the earliest coinage issued by the Romans in the Iberian Peninsula. In order to confirm or refute this geographical attribution, it has been decided to analyse a quadrigatus from Seville province using lead isotope analysis. MC-ICP-MS instruments have confirmed that the silver used to mint this quadrigatus originated from S’Argentera (Ibiza), a significant Phoenician-Punic mining site. Moreover, the isotopic signature of the quadrigatus matches those identified in Iberian drachms from Arse/Saguntum, Iltirta, and Kum, to which one may add a Hispanic-Carthaginian quarter shekel, likewise struck with silver from S’Argentera. Based on this isotopic relationship, it is suggested that Roman troops and Iberian allies reused Hispanic-Carthaginian coins and Punic silver plunder during the Second Punic War
Educational Myths as an Object of Study in Pedagogy
Since our origins, myths, whether as a source of worldview (Eliade, 1991) or a model of cultural values (Barthes, 2015), also provide representations with which we reinvent ourselves, with which we conceive social relations, with which we apprehend reality, or with which we guide forms of intervention in it. Throughout the history of civilization, to a greater or lesser extent, myths have been part of our symbolic world, offering us filters that allow us to understand and address the complexity of life, and of living (Campbell, 1988). It is difficult to conceive of ourselves without the heuristic presence of myths. But myths in their contemporary meaning, and in the sense in which it is taken in this work and without ceasing to be those symbolic filters, are associated with a narrative around false beliefs, with a questionable scientific basis that, however, are assumed to be true, but enjoy great diffusion and acceptance, forming part of normality in different aspects of our existence (Ortoleva, 2021)
Practices of Peer Review in Indexed Education Journals. Notes for the Discussion on Educational Evaluation
Educational assessment has occupied a prominent place in the development of formal education systems and its often considered a central axis in the definition of government public policies. Assessment in the field of education takes on many different forms according to the specific context, whether it is learning, training programs or research projects. However, one mechanism is shared by all of them, peer review, which in this case is the focus of interest projected in the review practices in indexed journals. The description of the "ideal" functioning of this process is contrasted with the voices and everyday experiences of editors of such journals. This reflects on the key elements identified, the fundamental role of editors and evaluators; the process followed by the text under review, from its reception to its publication; and some difficulties that this type of mechanism goes through. This approach to peer review aims to contribute to the identification of elements to improve its use and foster a broader discussion of this type of evaluation in the field of education.
