Speckle movement by deformable mirror as exoplanet direct imaging technique
Presentation by Anna Muphree ('21) delivered at the Rhodes College Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium (URCAS).The detection of exoplanets, planets in other solar systems, takes many forms. The most common method, observing the transit of exoplanets across their stars, effectively discovers planets close to their stars in edge-on systems. Once discovered, exoplanets may be characterized through direct imaging, allowing for their chemical makeup to be analyzed through spectroscopy and their habitability to be examined. This technique's main challenge is isolating the planet's light from the overwhelming light of the star. To achieve this, coronagraphs are used to redirect the star's light, allowing for planet detection. Atmospheric differences, temperature fluctuations, and imperfect optics cause dim star light in the image (called speckles) which hide the exoplanet's light among them. In this research, a deformable mirror is utilized to 'move' these speckles in order to identify the stationary exoplanets. The laboratory consists of a laser, which serves as the star's light; an optical setup, which fits the laser's size to the deformable mirror and camera; a deformable mirror with 140 actuators; and an astronomical camera. Initial work shows that these speckles may be manipulated using Zernike polynomials on the deformable mirror. Further research will explore more complex ways to deform the mirror and analyze the images taken
A Look into the Health Inequalities for Latinx and Hispanic Communities in Memphis During the Covid-19 Pandemic
Health disparities have been an ongoing issue many citizens in the United States are forced to deal with due to limited access to healthcare facilities, the high cost of medical care, and the societal racism embedded into our society. The Covid-19 Pandemicexposed many of the existing issues marginalized groups of individuals continue to go through due to the way they are valued in a capitalist society. In Memphis, a predominantly black city, the Latinx and Hispanic communities tend to be overlooked, generating an even greater divide between those provided with the necessary tools to endure the
pandemic and those forced to survive on their own1. This research aims to provide background information on the unequal distribution of healthcare services and expound upon how America dealt with the pandemic and how we could have responded differently. By using interviews and personal narratives from the Latinx and Hispanic community in Memphis, this study centers around the individualized experiences many faced during the pandemic. Master's Thesis: Empathy in the Math Classroom
Empathy is the ability to be able to infer what others are feeling or thinking, so then one can react or show care to another based on what is being inferred. Empathy is becoming a standard in many classrooms. While it is needed in every classroom, empathy is often excluded from the math classroom because many math teachers do not always know how to teach to the “whole” student, and do not understand how to empathize with their students. This thesis is a literature review, which examines what empathy is, why it is important in the classroom setting and why it is needed in the math classroom

The Southern Rural Cemetery: Using Grave Symbolism to Analyze Reactions to Epidemic Death in the Nineteenth Century
In the mid-nineteenth century, the American rural cemetery movement moved beyond the Northeast and permeated the South with garden landscapes and Victorian symbolism. Culture and experience distinctively shaped Southern portrayal of the movement’s hallmarks. The South’s relationship to death through war, epidemic, racial and economic strife transformed not only the rural cemetery’s landscape and symbolism but also the South’s attitudes towards mortality. Existing literature does not acknowledge how events of overwhelming death affected the movement’s romanticized views of death. Asa case study, this paper applies a code of symbolism to analyze grave markers at Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee and compares changes over time with first-person accounts of the 1878 yellow fever epidemic. This research has current implications because it studies people’s relationship to death in response to a severe epidemic—a reflection of how COVID-19 might change how we know and treat death in the future
