    Poto-Poto School Painting

    Reverend William Pruitt (1911-1999), who served as a Presbyterian missionary in the Belgian Congo from the 1930s to 1978, collected a group of 37 paintings from artists at the Poto-Poto School, a small art school in Brazzaville, Republic of the Congo that is still in operation today. In 1998, the Presbyterian Church U.S.A. began an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse made by several children of missionaries from the time Pruitt was a missionary in the Congo. This collection of paintings was found in the Rhodes College collection in the summer of 2023. The paintings were digitized and cataloged in the Visual Resources Center during fall 2023. The heads seem to be a mixture of male and female and are in excellent condition with extensive detail. They all seem to have been broken from original statues. One head appears to have come from a relief while the rest likely came from statuettes. They are labeled as "finest.

    Gouache painting on paper using watercolor and white pigment for opacity. There is a jade green pot with floral details and a crimson blue patterned inside. Emerging from the blue of the pot are botanical plants. Large white flowers with yellow centers and two-toned green leaves. There is a teal bush with dark blue specks. To the right of the white flowers and at the top left of the botanical bunch are red flowers on grey/brown branches. There are large green leaves with dark grey lines, a grey branch pretruding through the middle, and small two-toned green leaves. Other trees are teal with line work and grey/brown branches. There is a faded and red seal.This object was photographed and inventoried during fall 2023 by Alana Reece-Walker ('26). Please note that the date issued field refers to the date of the digital object's creation. The temporal coverage field contains date information for the actual physical object, when known
