This show was curated through Rhodes College's Curation in Context course and funded graciously by the Clough Hanson Gallery. The show featured Lauren Blair of Memphis College of Art. This show focused on the connection between medically transitioning and mental health. The "TEXT | subtext |" exhibition was held on Sunday, April 22nd at 5:30.     Electrostatics of two charged spheres at small separation

    Presentation by Yi Song ('18) and Blake Wilkerson delivered at the Rhodes College Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium (URCAS).There are many examples of electrostatic phenomena in our daily lives, from those as simple as the sparks that accompany the taking off of our sweaters, to the formation of clouds and rain droplets. Moreover, electrostatics are widely used in modern industry, such as laser printing and automotive spray painting. Our research project focuses on analyzing the electrostatic interaction between two charged conducting spheres in the limit when they are about to touch each other. By using analytical techniques, we obtain dimensionless expressions of capacitances for those two spheres. Furthermore, we derive the electrostatic force between two spheres. When the two spheres are of the same size, our results show that the electrostatic force can be expressed as a linear combination of two parts, one is always attractive and the other one is always repulsive. The attractive part always dominates the repulsive part at sufficiently small distances, thus the electrostatic force is always attractive at small distances, even for positively charged spheres

    "Body-ody-oddy" Exhibtion Image

    This digital image was photographed by Chip Pankey and uploaded to DLynx by the Visual Resources Center in December, 2018.This is an image of the Body-ody-oddy exhibition held in the Clough Hanson Gallery. The exhibition consisted of artists exploring the body at, against, and beyond its boundaries, creating hybrids, amalgams, and excesses that illuminate the ways that politics and pleasures are made flesh. It featured work by Katie Torn, Alex Paulus, Melissa Wilkinson, and Moth Moth Moth and the Haus of Phantosea. Alex Paulus commented on his work, stating "My paintings are a representation of how ridiculous I think life can be...I also like to include humor in the work. If my art can make people laugh and feel good, I’ve succeeded. The paintings are usually very bright and bold in color, and the subject matter can be a little bizarre. The use of brightly colored paint seems to curb some the strange imagery and make it more palatable to the viewer." Melissa Wilkinson commented as well, saying "These series of paintings focus on my interest in dichotomies: obscuring and revealing, attraction and repulsion, good and evil, the past and the present. I appropriate imagery from a variety of sources in order to develop a pastiche that fractures the conventional male gaze and positions art historical models as both subject and spectacle. I choose to dismantle epic narratives from the past to create a schizophrenic perspective. The images break from their original sources into fragments, creating a complex visual experience that both irritates and seduces. It is through this body of work that I seek to challenge the hetero-normative male gaze and reinvent a fluid view that fluctuates between unconventional representations of the erotic body.

    Ultrasonic Bone Assessment Using a Backscatter Difference Technique

    Presentation by Luke Fairbanks ('18), Joseph McPherson ('18), and Sheldon Ebron ('17) delivered at the Rhodes College Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Symposium (URCAS).Osteoporosis is a bone disease which disrupts the balance of cell destruction and new cell construction within bone. This decay leads to increased porosity within the bone tissue and heightened fracture risk. The focus of our research is the diagnosis of the bone disease osteoporosis with ultrasound. An ultrasonic wave centered around 3.5 MHz is sent into 55 cubic bone specimens taken from the porous interior of 14 donated femurs. The sound waves echo off of the bone, one device both sends and listens to the signal. The signal which is analyzed, the echo, is referred to as backscatter. The characteristics of the decay of the signal reveal the mechanical properties, mainly density, of the bone. The difference spectrum was averaged first over entire cubical specimen then again over the whole set of bone samples while varying the choices of where the signal was analyzed. This meta-analysis showed how the difference spectrum responds on average to analysis parameters. The difference spectrum changes when the time segments placed on the backscatter sound wave, the gates, change. Delaying the gates too late causes signal to noise ratio problems, and widening the gates gives finer resolution and shifts metrics such as the mean and slope of the difference spectrum. Conclusion: The difference spectrum does change on average when gate parameters vary, which informs the lab which choices might not be worth running through the analysis
