A multi-task learning model for super resolution of wireless channel characteristics
Channel modeling has always been the core part in communication system design and development, especially in 5G and 6G era. Traditional approaches like stochastic channel modeling and ray-tracing (RT) based channel modeling depend heavily on measurement data or simulation, which are usually expensive and time consuming. In this paper, we propose a novel super resolution (SR) model for generating channel character-istics data. The model is based on multi-task learning (MTL) convolutional neural networks (CNN) with residual connection. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed SR model could achieve excellent performances in mean absolute error and standard deviation of error. Advantages of the proposed model are demonstrated in comparisons with other state-of-the-art deep learning models. Ablation study also proved the necessity of multi-task learning and techniques in model design. The contribution in this paper could be helpful in channel modeling, network optimization, positioning and other wireless channel characteristics related work by largely reducing workload of simulation or measurement.GLOBECOM 2022 - 2022 IEEE Global Communications Conferenc
Soil microbial fuel cell based self-powered cathodic biosensor for sensitive detection of heavy metals
Soil microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are an innovative device for soil-powered biosensors. However, the traditional SMFC sensors relied on anodic biosensing which might be unstable for long-term and continuous monitoring of toxic pollutants. Here, a carbon-felt-based cathodic SMFC biosensor was developed and applied for soil-powered long-term sensing of heavy metal ions. The SMFC-based biosensor generated output voltage about 400 mV with the external load of 1000 Ω. Upon the injection of metal ions, the voltage of the SMFC was increased sharply and quickly reached a stable output within 2~5 min. The metal ions of Cd2+, Zn2+, Pb2+, or Hg2+ ranging from 0.5 to 30 mg/L could be quantified by using this SMFC biosensor. As the anode was immersed in the deep soil, this SMFC-based biosensor was able to monitor efficiently for four months under repeated metal ions detection without significant decrease on the output voltage. This finding demonstrated the clear potential of the cathodic SMFC biosensor, which can be further implemented as a low-cost self-powered biosensor.Biosensor
Techno-economic-environmental evaluation of aircraft propulsion electrification: Surrogate-based multi-mission optimal design approach
Driven by the sustainability initiatives in the aviation sector, the emerging technologies of aircraft propulsion electrification have been identified as the promising approach to realize sustainable and decarbonized aviation. This study proposes a surrogate-based multi-mission optimal design approach for aircraft propulsion electrification, which innovatively incorporates realistic aviation operations into the electric aircraft design, with the aim of improving the overall aircraft fuel economy over multiple flight missions and conditions in practical scenarios. The proposed optimal design approach starts with the flight route data analysis to cluster the flight operational data using gaussian mixture model, so that a concise representation of flight mission profiles can be achieved. Then, an optimal orthogonal array-based Latin hypercubes are employed to generate sampling points of design variables for electrified aircraft propulsion. The mission analysis is performed with coupled propulsion-airframe integration in order to propose energy management strategy for mission-dependent aircraft performance. Consequently, fuel economy surrogate model is established via support vector machines to obtain the optimal design points of electrified aircraft propulsion. For assessing the viability of novel propulsion technologies, techno-economic evaluation is conducted using sensitivity analysis and breakeven electricity prices under a series of environmental regulatory policy scenarios.Renewable and Sustainable Energy Review
Development of vision guided real-time trajectory planning system for autonomous ground refuelling operations using hybrid dataset
Accurate and rapid object localisation and pose estimation are playing key roles during some of the real-time robotic operations such as object grasping and object manipulating. To do so, high-level robotic vision solutions need to be adopted. Computer vision approaches require a large amount of data to be able to create a perception pipeline robustly. Preparing such dataset to train the deep neural network could be challenging as the collection and manual annotation of huge amounts of data can take long hours and the development of the dataset needs to cover different conditions in weather and lighting. To ease this process, generating a synthetic dataset could be used. Due to the limitations of the synthetic dataset which will be described further down, instead of using a sole synthetic dataset, a hybrid dataset can be developed with the real dataset to overcome the limitations of both datasets. Even though the main objective of this study is to fulfil an autonomous nozzle insertion process for the ground refuelling operation of civil aircraft, the proposed approach is generic and can be adapted to any 3D visual robotic manipulation operation. This study is also offered to be the first visual trajectory planning control mechanism depending on the hybrid dataset to this date.AIAA SciTech 2023 Foru
Towards a full-scale CFD guideline for simulating a ship advancing in open water
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations of a ship’s operations are generally conducted at model scale, but the reduced scale changes the fluid behaviour around the ship. Whilst ideally ship simulations should be run directly at full scale, a guide has not been published to advise on the suitable setups that can provide accurate results while minimizing the computational cost. To address this, the present work explores an optimal approach for full-scale ship simulations. Extensive sensitivity studies were conducted on relevant computational setups to investigate their influences on the prediction of ship resistance, ship-generated waves as well as the boundary-layer flow of the hull. A set of CFD setups for full-scale ship simulations in open water was recommended. It was demonstrated that the ideal Y+ and Courant numbers in full scale are evidently different from those given in current model-scale CFD guidelines, indicating the necessity to establish full-scale CFD guidelines separately.Ship Technology Researc
Designing global trade and logistics channels: a focus on the Chinese food and beverage market
Internationalisation ventures entail a close relationship between the trade channel (TC) and the logistics channel (LC), but few studies address simultaneously TC and LC design. This study investigates how TC can influence LC design and explores the role played by related contextual factors. Abductive reasoning is adopted within middle-range purposes, elaborating previous theory with multiple case studies considering European food manufacturers tackling a specific empirical context (i.e. the Chinese food and beverage market).
The study lends contingency theory elements and leverages them to develop nine propositions that can open to further inquiries about the influence of TC on LC design and the impact of the identified contextual factors. Moreover, it proposes the behavioural theory as a theoretical lens to approach LC (and not only TC) design. Lastly, it provides practitioners with insights that can be useful to improve their understanding of the Chinese food and beverage market
Explainable data-driven method combined with Bayesian filtering for remaining useful lifetime prediction of aircraft engines using NASA CMAPSS datasets
An aircraft engine is expected to have a high-reliability system as a safety-critical asset. A scheduled maintenance strategy based on statistical calculation has been employed as the current practice to achieve the reliability requirement. Any improvement to this maintenance interval is made after significant reliability issues arise (such as flight delays and high component removals). Several publications and research studies have been conducted related to this issue, one of them involves performing simulations and providing aircraft operation datasets. The recently published NASA CMAPPS datasets have been utilised in this paper since they simulate flight data recording from various measurements. A prognostics model can be developed by analysing these datasets and predicting the engine’s reliability before failure. However, the state-of-the-art prognostics techniques published in the literature using these NASA CMAPPS datasets are mainly purely data-driven. These techniques mainly deal with a “black box” process which does not include uncertainty quantification (UQ). These two factors are barriers to prognostics applications, particularly in the aviation industry. To tackle these issues, this paper aims at developing explainable and transparent algorithms and a software tool to compute the engine health, estimate engine end of life (EoL), and eventually predict its remaining useful life (RUL). The proposed algorithms use hybrid metrics for feature selection, employ logistic regression for health index estimation, and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) to update the prognostics model for predicting the RUL in a recursive fashion. Among the available datasets, dataset 02 is chosen because it has been widely used and is an ideal candidate for result comparison and dataset 03 is employed as a new state-of-the-art. As a result, the proposed algorithms yield 34.5–55.6% better performance in terms of the root mean squared error (RMSE) compared with the previous work. More importantly, the proposed method is transparent and it quantifies the uncertainty during the prediction process.Machine
Regional differences in nitrogen balance and nitrogen use efficiency in the rice–livestock system of Uruguay
The reintegration of crops with livestock systems is proposed as a way of improving the environmental impacts of food production globally, particularly the impact involving nitrogen (N). A detailed understanding of processes governing N fluxes and budgets is needed to design productive and efficient crop–livestock systems. This study aimed to investigate regional differences in N balance (NBAL, defined as all N inputs minus outputs), N use efficiency (NUE, defined as N outputs/inputs × 100), and N surplus (NSURP, defined as all N inputs minus only outputs in food products) in the rice–livestock system of Uruguay. Three regions across Uruguay are distinguished based on soil fertility and length of pasture rotation. The northern region has high soil fertility and short length of rotation (HFSR); the central region has medium soil fertility and medium length of rotation (MFMR); the eastern region has low fertility and long pasture rotation (LFLR). Results for the last 18 years show a very high NUE (90%) for the rice component in all rotations, associated with negative NBALs ranging from −35 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in HFSR to −3 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in LFLR. However, the livestock component, which overall had low animal productivity (<2 kg N ha−1 yr−1), had low NUE (<10%) but positive NBALs in all the rotations, sustaining N supply in the rice component. At the system level, NUE was high (60%) and NBAL was slightly positive in all rotations (from +2.8 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in HFSR to +8.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 in LFLR). Because of a recent increase in the N fertilizer dose in rice, NSURP for the overall system was intermediate (40 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and should be monitored in the future. Efforts to improve the system's efficiency should focus on the livestock component.Frontiers in Sustainable Food System
Effect on microbial communities in apple orchard soil when exposed short-term to climate change abiotic factors and different orchard management practices
Aim
We assessed the effect of exposing apple orchard soil to different temperatures and CO2 levels on the resident microbiome of soils from a conventionally managed and an organically managed apple orchard. The key difference between these two orchards was that synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are routinely used in the former one.
Methods and results
To investigate the effect of CO2 and temperature soil samples from each site at two depths were exposed to elevated temperature (29°C) at either 5,000 or 10,000 ppm for 5 weeks or control conditions (25°C + 400 ppm). Both bacterial and fungal communities were profiled with amplicon-sequencing. The differences between the two orchards were the most significant factor affecting bacterial and fungal communities contributing to 53.7% and 14.0% of variance in Bray-Curtis β diversity respectively. Elevated CO2 concentration and increased temperature affected organic orchard microbial diversity more than the conventionally managed orchard. A number of candidate beneficial and pathogenic microorganisms had differential abundance when temperature and CO2 were elevated, but their effect on the plant is unclear.
Conclusions
This study has highlighted that microbial communities in bulk soils are most significantly influenced by crop management practice compared to the climate conditions used in the study. The studied climate conditions had a more limited effect on microbial communitiy diversity in conventionally managed soil samples than in organically managed soils.Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC); Collaborative Training Partnerships (CTP) for Fruit Crop Research; NIAB EMRJournal of Applied Microbiolog
Refining microstructure of medium-thick AA2219 aluminium alloy welded joint by ultrasonic frequency double-pulsed arc
The increasing demand for achieving high-efficiency and high-quality medium-thick aluminium alloy welded structures, especially for large scale aerospace components, presents an urgent challenge to the conventional TIG arc welding process. This work proposed a novel double-pulsed variable polarity tungsten inert gas (DP-VPTIG) arc, in which the variable polarity square wave current was simultaneously modulated into ultrasonic frequency (20–80 kHz) and low frequency (0.5–10 Hz) pulses. Full penetration welds of 6 mm thick AA2219 aluminum alloy were successfully obtained by using this process. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the weld produced by DP-VPTIG arc were investigated, taking the conventional VPTIG arc as a comparative study. Results show that the microstructure of weld zone by DP-VPTIG arc showed an alternating distribution of fine equiaxed grain band and slightly coarse equiaxed grain band. Compared to VPTIG arc, the grain structure was effectively refined in the weld zone with DP-VPTIG arc, showing a significant reduction of average grain size by 51.2% along transverse section and 61.3% along longitudinal section. The morphology of α-Al+θ-CuAl2 eutectics transformed from continuously distributed netlike shape to separately distributed granular shape, and segregation of Cu solute element was obviously improved. The average microhardness of weld zone was increased by about 8.7% and 5.6% along transverse section and along longitudinal section. The tensile properties of ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and elongation were increased by 6.6%, 10.6% and 20.5%, respectively. The results provide a valuable basis for improving welding efficiency and joint quality through a hybrid pulsed arc.Journal of Materials Research and Technolog
