From the field to the lab and back: Evaluating the integrity of welded components using scaled experiments

    No full text
This contribution addresses the question of how the behaviour of complex parts or components in industrial practice can be simulated using simple welding experiments in the laboratory. It is demonstrated how so-called mock-ups can be utilised for this purpose. In particular, a test rig specially designed for scaled welding experiments is shown. It allows mechanical restraints and stiffnesses to be simulated, as well as typical welding process parameters and post weld heat treatments. Selected examples show how solidification crack growth during welding of high-strength steels can be quantified, under which conditions stress relaxation cracks occur during the heat treatment of heat-resistant steels, and how the integrity of pressurised hydrogen pipelines can be assessed during repair welding

Polyoxometalate Ionic Liquids as Protective Coatings for Industrial Infrastructure and Cultural Heritage against Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC)

    No full text
Corrosion of stone and metal due to acid rain and biodeterioration poses significant challenges for industrial and residential infrastructure, as well as cultural heritage, including statues and historical artefacts. A promising mitigation strategy involves thin, transparent films of polyoxometalate-based ionic liquids (POM-ILs) as chemical shields. Stone samples coated with acid-resistant, biocidal POM-ILs exhibited negligible corrosion when exposed to simulated acid rain, in stark contrast to the severe deterioration of unprotected samples. Additionally, their biocidal properties effectively prevent biofilm formation on coated surfaces. Following studies successfully explored the effectiveness of the coating against lampenflora growing in the Pommery Champagne cellar; and the long-term performance of POM-ILs under outdoor environmental conditions. So, POM-ILs have already demonstrated remarkable anticorrosion and antimicrobial properties against aerobic microorganisms and, being water-insoluble, do not leach into aquatic ecosystem. The current research project repurposes the POM-ILs, extending their application to metals, specifically targeting microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) in cultural heritage artefacts made of brass, carbon steel, cast iron, and bronze. This involves optimizing nanocoating adhesion to the metal surface and evaluating its protective efficacy against MIC caused by anaerobic microorganisms such as methanogenic archaea and sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB). This presentation will highlight POM-ILs as sustainable, high-performance nanocoatings for biocorrosion mitigation. It will showcase published success stories, discuss ongoing research and proof-of-concept results, and explore future prospects for these advanced materials in safeguarding metal infrastructure and artefacts across different industrial sectors as well as in the context of cultural heritage conservation

Berücksichtigung der Tragwerksumgebung bei Brandversuchen an Stahlbetonstützen

    No full text

Textile Fibers as Reference Materials for Microplastic Release

    No full text
Fibers of textile origin are named as high contributor for microplastic pollution in the environment next to e.g. plastics from packaging, tire wear and paints. Small fibers and fragments (microplastics: 1-1000 µm) can be released from textiles by mechanical abrasion during application (e.g. wearing) or washing. To date, the occurrence, transport pathways, and impacts of such small fibers on the environment and human health remain unclear. The European Commission revised the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (Directive (EU) 2024/3019) and made monitoring of microplastics mandatory in the next years. Additionally, standards for microplastic detection are developed in the ISO standardization body ISO/TC 147/SC 2 with the documents ISO/DIS 16094-2 and ISO/DIS 16094-3. Detection mainly occurs by thermoanalytical methods for mass or vibrational methods with microscopes for numbers. Such standards and regulatory efforts need validated methods, which themselves need reference materials for validation. Reference materials are well characterized materials that are produced for a specific purpose and are homogeneous and stable within one property of interest. The shape and the composition of the reference particles/fibers will affect the detection, hence it is important to validate the instruments with fibers, if this is the task for monitoring campaigns. This work describes the production of realistic fibers as reference material for microplastic analysis. The individual samples contain of a small number (< 1000) and mass (< 20 µm) of fibres. Homogeneity and stability control occurred by thermogravimetric analysis and µ-Raman. Further characteristics were determined for type, shape and size distribution

The European Metrology Network for Pollution Monitoring – EMN POLMO

    No full text
The EU’s Green Deal acknowledges that « the EU needs to better monitoring, report, prevent and remedy pollution from air, water, soil and consumer products and to look more systematically at all policies and regulations ». In order to address these challenges, the Commission launched a new Strategy for Sustainability in October 2020, and adopted a Zero-pollution Action Plan for air, water and soil, in 2021. The comparability and trueness of measurements are often compromised by the lack of intact traceability chains and appropriate quality controls, for example attained by the use of matrix-matched certified reference materials, participation in interlaboratory comparisons and other validation schemes . Noticeable improvements are apprehended after practical demonstrations and scientific discussions on the importance of traceability to the SI with stakeholders and end-users . The European Metrology Network for Pollution Monitoring (EMN POLMO) was created in 2022 to provide metrology support to the environmental community and industry involved in the monitoring of variety of pollutants, including chemical pollutants, radionuclides, biological & microbiological, and nano and micro particles, in the three environmental compartments (air, water and soil). Recently, light pollution and noise pollution have been included in the scope of the network. One of the main goals of POLMO is to bridge the interests of the different stakeholder and end-user, and to contribute to environmental sustainability through the provision of tools and resources, required to perform accurate, comparable measurements. The POLMO Strategic Research Agenda identifies the key measurement challenges and opportunities in pollution monitoring and sets out a roadmap for future research and development
