    The dataset consists of metadata for the Refresh cube campaign (RCC) undertaken at Silsoe using the 6 m^3 test structure at the site and eight other 6 m^3 straw cubes. The campaign was undertaken as part of the PhD work of Gough (2017) and forms the full-scale experiments of the REFRESH project. The dataset is split into two sections: an isolated cube and the array case with three different opening set-ups being undertaken for both array and isolated. The array was in place October 2014 to April 2015, and the cube was isolated from May 2015 to July 2015

    The dataset provides the source codes of MATLAB program for building dynamic thermophysical process modelling of a typical 3-occupant residential apartment identified in the HSCW (Hot Summer and Cold Winter) zone of China. The plain layout of the 3-occupant residential apartment is provided in a separate introduction document. Three versions of programs are available to calculate the cases of free room temperatures without energy supply, ideal building heating and cooling loads with fixed room target temperatures, and building heating and cooling loads with room target temperature control bands, respectively. The model is developed based on the State-Space Method, with a view to investigating the impact of thermal mass of external walls on residential buildings in the part time part space heating and cooling in the HSCW zone. A small time interval can be set manually to get a high-resolution model in particular for the intermittent occupancy pattern. Different scenarios of heating/cooling modes, thermal mass and thermal insulation placements of external walls are considered and three representative cities Chongqing, Changsha and Shanghai in the HSCW zone are chosen as the input weather data. Options in the programs can be chosen and relevant default parameter settings can be changed to be fit for the building simulations of different scenarios

    The dataset consists of satellite observations of Lake Surface Water Temperature (LSWT) and Lake Ice Cover (LIC) for major lakes, globally, from 1995 to 2012. The dataset was generated within the European Space Agency (ESA) ‘ATSR Reprocessing for Climate: Lake Surface Water Temperature & Ice Cover’ (ARC-Lake) project in 2014 and data were/are available for downloading at www.laketemp.net. The project aimed to use the exceptional radiometric qualities and dual-view scanning capability of the ATSRs to derive observations of LSWT contained in this dataset. This can be considered to be a major contribution to monitoring of lakes within the Global Climate Observing System, because the ATSRs are in principle capable of being a highly accurate source of information on LSWTs on a systematic global basis, in comparison to in situ measurements which may not be avaialable. The method is based on surface water temperature retrieval from the thermal channels using the following instruments: ATRS2 on the ERS-2 platform and AATSR on the Envisat platform. LSWT and LIC observations have potential environmental and meteorological applications for inland water management and numerical weather prediction (NWP). They also offer the basis of a long term record of the physical state of lakes

    Crop growth and aphid populations in winter wheat fields from across Europe

    This is the dataset used for the paper �Enhancing soil organic matter as a route to the ecological intensification of European arable systems� published in the journal Ecosystems. It contains data on aphid abundance, crop morphology and yield from 84 wheat fields across Europe including from the UK, Sweden, Poland, Germany and the Netherlands. The dataset is made up of 3 parts. The first covers data for three aphid species provided as 'Aphid days per tiller' as a measure of pest pressure. Data on aphid numbers were collected on crop searches across experimental plots three times during the growing season. The second contains data on crop morphology provided as tiller mass and ear mass as well as yield in tonnes per hectare. All were collected as sub-samples at harvest and oven-dried before weighing. Thirdly data on a cage study is provided and involved inoculation and caging of sub-plots of crop with S. avenae aphids followed by population growth assessments after 5 days. Experimental treatments in the study include nitrogen fertiliser application and low and high soil organic carbon. See manuscript for full experimental details

    The dataset was created during research for Professor Roberta Gilchrist�s Rhind Lectures in 2017 and subsequent publication on Sacred Heritage (R. Gilchrist, 'Sacred Heritage and Monastic Archaeology: Interpreting Medieval Identities and Beliefs', Cambridge University Press, forthcoming). The Rhind Lectures are hosted annually by the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. Part of this research concentrated on establishing the range of archaeological evidence for magic and healing practices from later medieval monastic and church contexts in Scotland (c. 1000 AD � c. 1600 AD). This was collected from published excavation reports and from Historic Environment Scotland�s Canmore Database, and was recorded in a Microsoft Access database. Evidence was chosen for inclusion in the database based on current understandings of medieval magic and healing, and the potential forms this could take in the archaeological record. It is comprised of burials, objects and environmental data, such as medicinal plant remains, amulets, evidence for surgery and pathology on human skeletal remains. This is the first regional synthesis of the archaeology of magic and healing from medieval Scotland and marks a first step towards understanding this under-researched area of archaeology

    The impact of precipitating hydrometeors on the atmospheric radiation budget

    This dataset contains atmospheric radiative fluxes and heating rates. These fluxes and heating rates were calculated in order to quantify the effect of precipitating hydrometeors (particularly rain) on the radiation budget of the atmosphere and thereby determine whether climate and weather models should include a treatment of the radiative effect of rain. The dataset includes 4 files. all_hydro.nc and no_rain.nc contain full resolution SW and LW radiative fluxes at the surface and top of atmosphere for calculations that include all hydrometeors and all hydrometeors except rain, respectively. hydro_rad_effects.nc includes results from additional calculations at a lower resolution. case_study_data.nc includes full vertical profiles of radiative fluxes and heating rates at full resolution for 3 points that were chosen as case studies
