    Measurements of broad sense heritability of generation time and motility in cancer cell lines

    Experiments were conducted over 7 months to record the motility and generation time of four cancer cell lines - HeLa, HT1080, MCF7 and MDA-MB-231 - in cell culture. Cell lines were cultured in vitro on a well plate for 24 hours before being placed into the environmental chamber of a Nikon TiE Timelapse Microscope. Multiple points within every well were chosen and videoed over a period of 72 hours. These videos were then analysed and cell motility and division tracked using MtrackJ and ImageJ. Records were kept of which cells divided and the track number assigned to each daughter cell. This allowed comparison between and within cell families so the heritability of the cell traits, motility and generation time, could be estimated. Broad sense heritability was estimated as the slope parameter of an ordinary least squares regression between related cells. Three cell-cell relationships were tested, mother-daughter, sister-sister and cousin-cousin. Our results showed that cell motility has high and significant heritability for all cell lines tested whereas generation time showed little or no significant heritability for the cell lines tested. This is consistent with expectations that traits closely linked to fitness will in general have lower heritability. These results are important for cancer evolution as heritability (a prerequisite for natural selection to be able to act) has never before been measured for any traits in cancer cells

    Yield parameter relationships of oilseed rape (Brassica napus) under the influence of fertiliser and insect pollination

    This dataset is made up of data from three studies. The first involves a flight cage trial where oilseed rape plants were grown under four fertiliser treatments and then exposed to insect pollination or not. A number of yield parameters were then collected from each plant. The second study involved a field study across three oilseed rape fields with insect pollinator exclusion cages placed over areas of the crop. Yield parameters were then collected from plants under these exclusion cages as well as open controls. The final dataset includes field data collected from a number of oilseed rape study plots where plant yield, seeds per pod, pod number and thousand grain weight has been established from a number of individual plants across these plots

Stable isotope records from speleothems provide information on past climate changes, most particularly information that can be used to reconstruct past changes in precipitation and atmospheric circulation. SISAL (Speleothem Isotope Synthesis and Analysis) is an international working group of the Past Global Changes (PAGES) project. The working group aims to provide a comprehensive compilation of speleothem isotope records for climate reconstruction and model evaluation. The first version of the SISAL database contains oxygen and carbon isotope measurements from 371 individual speleothem records, and 10 composites from 174 cave systems worldwide, and metadata describing the cave settings and age models of these records

    30 minute averaged overview data from the Silsoe Refresh Cube Campaign (RCC)

    All 30 minute averaged data taken during the Refresh Cube Campaign (RCC) at Silsoe using the 6 m^3 test structure at the site and eight other 6 m^3 straw cubes undertaken as part of the PhD work of Gough (2017) and forms the full-scale experiments of the REFRESH project. The data-set is split into two sections: an isolated cube and the array case with three different opening set-ups being undertaken for both array and isolated. The array was in place October 2014 to April 2015, and the cube was isolated from May 2015 to July 2015. Details of the experimental set-ups are available in publications. The data contained within this document are 30 minute averaged and quality controlled using code previously used for the ACTUAL project. The data set contains wind speeds, wind directions, internal and external temperatures, surface pressures, CO_2 concentrations and ventilation rates calculated from the pressure difference methods.     Simulations with the sea ice model CICE documenting the impact of improved sea ice physics

    Sea ice thickness data (CryoSat-2) have been used to identify and correct shortcomings in simulating winter ice growth in the widely used sea ice model CICE. Here, we provide the data from CICE simulations documenting the impact of improved sea ice physics and the sensitivity to forcing and initial data. Adding a model of snow drift and using a different scheme for calculating the ice conductivity improve model results. Sensitivity studies demonstrate that atmospheric winter conditions have little impact on winter ice growth, and the fate of Arctic summer sea ice is largely controlled by atmospheric conditions during the melting season. A full description of the data processing and uncertainties is given by Schröder et al. (2018), 'New insight from CryoSat-2 sea ice thickness for sea ice modelling', in The Cryosphere. All simulations are listed in Tables 1 to 3 of this paper

    This dataset contains atmospheric radiative fluxes and heating rates. These fluxes and heating rates were calculated in order to quantify the effect of precipitating hydrometeors (particularly rain) on the radiation budget of the atmosphere and thereby determine whether climate and weather models should include a treatment of the radiative effect of rain. The dataset includes 4 files. all_hydro.nc and no_rain.nc contain full resolution SW and LW radiative fluxes at the surface and top of atmosphere for calculations that include all hydrometeors and all hydrometeors except rain, respectively. hydro_rad_effects.nc includes results from additional calculations at a lower resolution. case_study_data.nc includes full vertical profiles of radiative fluxes and heating rates at full resolution for 3 points that were chosen as case studies
