    No full text
The study surveyed listeners' perception of anti-hate speech messages on Authority Radio FM Nnewi. It sought to find out listeners' exposure, the extent of their comprehension, factors contributing to their incomprehension, and the influence of hate speech on their behaviour. The research was hinged on the social responsibility theory. A total of four hundred copies of the questionnaire were distributed, and data were analysed using the simple percentage approach. Results showed a majority response rate of: 79.2% exposure, 46.8% incomprehension, 31.1% message presentation in the English language, and 55.8% ability to influence behaviour. The study recommended a lingua franca version (in the native language of the listeners) of anti-hate speech messages and establishing community channels for monitoring and reporting anti-hate speech to regulatory bodies, including a lawful framework for punishment defaulting radio stations

Canities is the graying of hair. It is usually hereditary and a most dramatic change in hair, which finally ends as white hair. The pathogenesis is not yet clear though several hypotheses have been suggested. This study was aimed at establishing the relationship of canities with triiodothyronine (T3) level and age in female subjects. Eighty-eight (88) apparently healthy subjects aged eighteen (18) and above were used. Triiodothyronine level was determined using Enzyme Linked immunoabsorbent Assay (ELISA) as modified by Accubind ELISA microwell monobind Inc, lake Forest, CA 92630, USA. Data analysis were done using Fisher exact test, ANOVA, chi-square test and linear correlation coefficient by using SP statistical software 15.0 for windows 7 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL USA). Comparison of both Mean ± SD of subjects with canities and without canities revealed a statistically significant difference between canities and T3 level (p = 1.79E – 09). There was a positive significant correlation between canities and T3 level (r = 0.59). Also comparison the five groups according to those with canities and those without canities revealed that there was a statistically significant difference between age and having canities (p = 6.45E - 11)

Ovarian cancer is a malignant tumor of the ovary, usually a carcinoma. Ovarian cancer is not readily detected in the early stage, and this is because of the wide ranging pathology and imperfect understanding of its cause. This study was carried out to evaluate the prevalence of ovarian cancer among surgical ovarian specimen in Alex-Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki. Women within related groups such as ages, lifestyle, relationships, and occupation were the perfect subject for this research. Nonetheless, archived block tissue samples from histopathology laboratory were used in this research. (311) three hundred and eleven archived blocks were sectioned and stained Several special stains like haematoxylin and eosin stain, Periodic acid Schiff stain, silver stain were used as diagnostic criterion for histological evaluation of ovarian diseases as they present clear and understandable features which demonstrate the disease conditions in tissue with variance in both benign cases and malignant cases having a better and rapid diagnostic criterion for ascertaining the stages of the disease. Various physical comparative data were further exploited with regards on their predisposing factors to the diseases. The analysis on percentage on how these physical factors interfere to bring about Ovarian diseases were obtained and these predisposing factors display a clear concomitant ratio show the prevalence of ovarian cancer in certain age groups, occupation, marital status, lifestyle, obesity and breastfeeding. Therefore, this research covers a broader range of diagnostic success in ovarian cancer as well as its associated physical risk factors which if considered can lower the occurrences and ameliorate the increasing cases of the disease

This study focused on evaluating the effect of communication sector domestic public investment (DPI) on economic growth in Nigeria. The data of DPI in communication from 1999 – 2019, extracted from the Central Bank of Nigeria statistical bulletin, were used to investigate if DPI in communication has a positive effect on economic growth in Nigeria. The study analyses were conducted using linear regression with the Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) technique and Granger causality technology. The findings indicated that DPI in communication did not have a positive and significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria. The findings also revealed that the causality relationship between DPI and economic growth in Nigeria was lacking over the 20–year study period. The current findings thus, suggested that government spending should be channelled to affect the economy to promote growth and development in the process

The emergence of Web 2.0 in the 21st century was accompanied by various social networking sites (SNSs). Although the democratic nature of the Internet offered freedom to choose an SNS, selecting the appropriate one for communication became difficult. The research examines the most used uncertainty reduction strategy international students employ for communication within and outside their school environment. It investigates the most dominant social networking platforms used by international students in their home country, within North Cyprus and among other international students within the school environment. The study population was 16,000 students, with 450 respondents as sample size. The analysis was done using SPSS for demographics and JASP 0.10.20, with a binomial frequency that captures the results depicting that international student most prefer WhatsApp for communicating with families in their home country, school environment North Cyprus and others. The results also revealed that users looked out for convenience and security as the best reasons for reducing their level of uncertainty in communication. The study recommends that further research should be concentrated on longitudinal studies and also consider doing research using any of the approaches that are qualitatively inclined to ascertain if the result will be in tandem with the Eastern Mediterranean University when communicating with other international students.   KEYWORDS: Uncertainty Reduction Strategy, Choice, Networking Sites, International Students. &nbsp

Foot mycoses are a frequent disease that represents a public health problem worldwide. This study among footballers in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria, with the aim to evaluate the epidemiology of foot mycoses, in order to determine the etiological fungal agents and to identify possible risk factors, as well as investigate the treatment and preventive measures for the susceptible groups.  A total of 50 samples were collected by nail scraping method; Tinea unguium was confirmed in 88.2% of cases using direct microscopy and cultural methods in lactophenol cotton blue and Sabouraud agar media respectively. A prospective study of fifty footballers was undertaken within one year. A complete mycological diagnosis was carried out on all footballers using direct microscopy and cultural methods in lactophenol cotton blue and Sabouraud agar media respectively. Confirmatory test such as germ-tube test was carried out on the yeast Candida albicans isolates for accurate identification.  The results obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using percentage and ANOVA revealed that out of the 50 toe nail samples of footballers examined 28(56.0%) were positive for the infective agent on direct microscopy which served as the screening test. The causative pathogens of Onychomycosis isolated from fungal culture on Sabouraud agar medium, are dermatophytes , and the most frequent pathogen was Trichophyton  rubrum 15(30.0%), yeast isolates were confirmed by germ-tube test, Candida albicans  9(18.0%) . Non-dermatophyte molds were observed in 8(16.0%) cases and Fusarium species was the most frequent genus 14(28.0%) and Aspergillus species 4(8.0%). The main predisposing factors of fungal foot infections were practicing ritual washing (56.6%) and frequentation of communal showers (50.5%). The age group 31- 35 years had the highest prevalence of onychomycosis 12(92.30%) and age group 16-20 years presented the lowest prevalence of onychomycosis 4(28.57%). The confinement of toe nail inside dark, warm and moist environment inside shoes is the major factor that promotes this fungal infection. Therefore proper care of toe nails and boots is necessary to prevent the increasing rate of those infection. Keywords:  Mycoses, epidemiology, Tinea unguium, Onychomycosis, infections

    No full text
Men in Nigeria predominately occupy political positions despite the 35% affirmative action quota by the democratic government and media campaign on the inclusion of women in politics. The study examined the influence of radio on women's political participation in Nigerian politics. It focused on investigating the influence of radio in the political engagement and mobilisation of select women in Makurdi to politically participate in the 2019 elections and ascertain the extent of the use. Hinged on the Democratic Participant Theory, the study adopted the survey research method and purposively selected 200 respondents from the Makurdi metropolis. Findings show a significant increase in interest in political participation due to media access and radio use for political campaigns in Makurdi. The finding implies that despite influences of pervasive social media, radio can potentially increase the number of women aspirants in the political offices if adequately utilised. Therefore, the study recommends the location of community radios in local communities for easy access to women and increased political participation.   KEYWORDS: Women, Nigeria, Election, Radio, Political Participation   &nbsp

    An Update on Hemophilia A

    No full text
Hemophilia A is an X-linked recessive disease caused by a defect in functional coagulation of plasma VIII (FVIII), which can be inherited or caused by spontaneous mutations. The development of inhibitory alloantibodies against FVII can seriously complicate the management of genetic cases. In rare cases, the development of autoantibodies against FVII can lead to acquired hemophilia A. The diagnosis of hemophilia A can be suspected because the coagulation test shows an increase in partial thromboplastin time (PTT) when the prothrombin time (PT) and bleeding time are normal. It’s Only Natural: Analyzing the Role of Biased Knowledge in Science and Democracy

    No full text
This paper examines the use of science in democratic society to guide moral and philosophical principles, and the resulting distribution of rights and resources. It explores the use of alleged natural differences to justify the denial of rights and resources on the basis of gender and race from early democracy to the twentieth century. To illustrate this trend, it draws on case studies including the historical examinations of anatomical and neurological differences between the races and sexes, and the laws and policies that both reflected and shaped these theories. It then evaluates activist efforts to counteract these biases and work towards equality. Finally, it explores the modern debate surrounding sex differences in the brain, and the ethical stakes it presents in light of these historical differences. On the basis of these examinations, it hypothesizes that in separating scientific theory acceptance from moral and political implications, and engaging in ethical debate around these implications, scientists, theorists, and politicians alike can promote equality while continuing to pursue scientific knowledge
