Public Relations in Education: A Strategic Plan for universities in Nigeria
Education is about generating, disseminating, advancing, and applying knowledge. To succeed in it therefore, requires qualified teachers, teachable students, enabling environment, healthy competition, and a culture of motivation. In the absence of these, university education fails. This paper addressed the question: are universities in Nigeria today still able to deliver on the lofty goals of education? Hinged on the theories of perception and persuasion, through a discursive approach, the paper observed that universities have largely lost its place of pride as reservoir of knowledge in Nigeria. The paper found a growing worry about university education arising from inadequate funding, poor quality of staff and students, brain-drain, incessant strikes, poor leadership, corruption among others. This paper thus, advocated the use of public relations strategies to revamp the ailing system through a series of public relations approaches in education, otherwise called Educational Public Relations (EPR). The paper further found that this happened because universities suffered neglect, hence failed to deliver quality and standard. Instead, they depreciated, produced declined value due to use of moribund facilities. The paper, however expressed hope that strategic use of a public relations plan was a necessary intervention. EPR plan was recommended as a catalyst to bring back the vigour, lost glory, positive public image, integrity and trust in the university system in Nigeria
Hedonism And The Fallacy Of Joie De Vivre: A Study Of Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies
One of the social scourges that have and is plaguing society is war and its protracted aftermath is trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder does not haunt only actors in a war but, equally, other members of society. Amongst the multi-faceted manifestations of trauma is the quest for self-gratification which people seek in a bid to assuage the pangs of trauma and triumph over depression and anxieties. However, through Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, this paper seeks to demonstrate that despite the voracious desire for pleasure that cuts across demographics as a panacea to war anxieties, people do not obtain fulfillment given that hedonism provides only shortterm happiness. Lack of fulfilment in the quest for pleasure challenges the notion of joie de vivre especially as self-indulgence, also, renders people reckless, reduces awareness of danger and mars concern for their wellbeing thereby exposing them to death. Hence, help out of trauma could be sought from mental health professionals. Freud's ideas on how the first part of the tripartite psyche—the Id operates on the pleasure principle, Carl Jung's discourse on the collective unconscious, and the new historicist—Greenblatt's argument that a text reflects the atmosphere within which it was produced guide the analysis in this paper
A Comparative Analysis of E-learning and Conventional Teaching Methods in Higher Education
The rapid advancement of technology has transformed the landscape ofeducation, with e-learning emerging as a popular alternative toconventional teaching methods in higher education. With thewidespread availability of online resources, e-learning has gainedpopularity as an alternative or complementary method to traditionalface-to-face instruction. However, the extent to which e-learning canmatch or surpass the outcomes achieved through conventional teachingmethods remains an open question. This study aims to address this gapin knowledge and provide a comprehensive analysis of bothapproaches. This comparative analysis research specificallyinvestigates and compares the effectiveness, advantages, andchallenges associated with e-learning and conventional teachingmethods in the higher education context. By examining these factors, the study intends to provide insights into the strengths and weaknessesof each method, contributing to the understanding of their implicationsfor teaching and learning in higher education. Research was conductedwith the assistance of teachers from three higher educational institutions in Anambra State, Nigeria. A questionnaire survey wasdesigned and distributed to voluntary respondents, keeping in mind keyareas of conventional and e-learning teaching methods. The data wasanalysed using simple sampling proportions and Modality ofPreference theory, propounded by Neil Fleming (1987). The theory wasdesigned to help students and others learn more about their individuallearning preferences. Findings indicate that adopting contemporarydigital technology in higher education offers greater benefits, butteachers should take into account student requirements, classobjectives, and potential challenges before choosing a teachingtechnique. It equally advocates the cooperation of both teachingapproaches for optimal learning outcomes. The study will contribute toa deeper understanding of the benefits and limitations of bothapproaches, offering insights to educators, institutions, andpolicymakers for informed decision-making
Samuel Selvon`s The Lonely Londoners: A Significant Example of World Literature Written in English.
World literature is seen as a mode of reading across national boundaries. The Eurocentric nature of world literature in the post-colonial era has made The Lonely Londoners a good example of world literature as it is originally written in English. It is recognized as a text whose reception extends its local readership. This is so because immigrants from around the world relate to the problems encountered while trying to be upwardly mobile in the British center as highlighted in the novel. This study is interested in the discussion of the novel The Lonely Londoners as a significant example of world literature written in English. The study adopts textual analysis as its method. This is done within the theoretical framework of post-colonialism as proposed by scholars. The study shows that The Lonely Londoners is a literary work that is embraced globally and exists as a genre belonging to the literary period of postmodernism. It focuses on the ideas of migration, integration, and post colonialism. Also, it unveils the realities of immigrants in the post- war immigrant communities of the British capital. The author has written many books in which he mostly explores the experience of immigrants from different parts of the world. The novel is considered a world literature because it has been translated into major languages of the world and transcends the culture and civilization of its country of origin to showcase the events and practices in a different society

DISTRIBUTION OF ABO, RHESUS BLOOD GROUP AND HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN CALABAR SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT, CROSS RIVER STATE, NIGERIA
Helicobacter pylori infection remains a public health issue and its pathogenesis is linked to ABO blood group and Rhesus blood system with diverse scientific reports. This study assessed the distribution of ABO, Rhesus Blood Group and Helicobacter pylori among Secondary School Students in Calabar South Local Government Area, Cross River State, Nigeria. Two hundred (200) subjects aged between 9 and 18 years were enrolled for this study. Informed consent was obtained from all parents of the participants and questionnaire administered. Blood group was done using standard tube method and Helicobacter pylori assayed using Rapid diagnostic kits( Micropoint Rapid diagnostic test(USA).Lot no.HP 1907).Statistical analysis was done using chi-square. One hundred and sixteen (116) respondents out of 200 were females representing 58% of the study population while eighty-four (42%) were males. Age group 13-15 made up 37% of the population with 74 children while age 10-12 were 58(29%), 15-18 were 48(24%) and the lowest age 9 with 20 respondents and 10%. Fifty-four (27%), 43 (21.5%), 31 (15.5%) and 72 (36%) students were of A, B, AB and O blood groups respectively. A total of 35 (46.5%), 23 (33.5%), 13(41.9%) and 40 (55.5%) students were seropositive for Helicobacter pylori infection of which belonged to groups A, B AB and O respectively. The age bracket of 13- 15 years 74(37%) had a higher H. pylori Infection rate of 56.3% across blood group O. Chi square analysis indicated that ABO blood group was significantly associated with H. pylori infection with respect to age (X2 = 43.612, P = 0.001). From this study, blood group O was the most predominant and is more susceptible to Helicobacter pylori infection while group AB was the lowest. However blood groups A and B showed close proximity, Rhesus D positive blood group was more abundant with a higher occurrence of Helicobacter pylori infection. This study suggest that ABO and Rh (D) blood groups and age influence seropositivity for Helicobacter pylori infection
