    No full text
Women have always been considered as simply mere commodities. This has made them not to be valued for their human qualities in the society. Women in most African cultures are seen as commodities, where they are being given out in marriage against their will. Most times they are being sold out as commodities for economic values. However, African writers have been able to expose the flaws and dangers in such a conception. This study examines the negative impact of feminist struggles as a result of commodification by African parents. The study adopts feminism as a theory and uses textual analysis method to critically analyze Efua Sutherland's The Marriage of Anansewa and Zulu Sofola's Wedlock of the Gods. Through content analysis, the study discusses the commodification of women and their struggles in the African Patriarchal society. The study concludes that women will do better and contribute more positively in the society when they are given freedom to live as humans not as commodities. The study recommends that awareness should be created by triggering dialogue through theatre. This approach will open a unique space to build awareness on the effects of forced marriages as well as open discussion on how to address the issu

The aim of this paper 'Syntactic Analysis of Topicalization in IkwuanoIgbo' is to examine topicalization in Ikwuano, with a view toestablishing the Ikwuano strategy. Syntax deals with the rules andguidelines for sentence formation while word order arrangementcontributes a lot in the grammaticality of a sentence. Topicalization is amechanism of syntax that establishes an expression as the sentence orclause topic by having it appear at the front of the sentence. Thisresearch argues that topicalization is an unbounded movement; it claimsthat, there is a complex interconnection between topicalization andfocus in the language as no constituents of a sentence can be focusedwithout topicalizaion. The Theoretical framework for this study is themovement principle of principles and parameters of Noam Chomsky. Inthe process of movement, an element iterates from one place to theother. This work explains the motivation for the topicalized strategy andits behavior in the language. The data for this paper is elicited utterancesby adult native speakers from Ikwuano and intuition from the researcherwho is a native speaker. Finding reveals that, when the movingconstituent is extracted from its logical position, it leaves behind a copy that is regarded as a ghost of the moving item. This study argues thattopicalization is a kind of focusing and fronting of constituent'sstructure because it involves the preposing of the item to be topicalizedas a leftward movement rule.&nbsp

Thispaper attempts to fill the gap which is responsible for obscurity inmeaning and failure in sharing clear and understandable messages inmany of our communication endeavours. It is a discourse analysis ofselected writing problems that hinder clarity in writing and make ourcommunication ineffective. It is hinged on the three-part theories ofCognitive Load, Cognitive Learning, and Cognitive Bias. The aim is tocomment on the importance of clarity in the very nature ofcommunication and re-emphasize its worth for human survival. Thepaper appraises the linear, interactive and transactional conceptions ofthe communication art. The research randomly assembles some factorsthat affect clarity and constitute barrier to effective communication indaily encounters using documentary and discourse approaches. Theresults of the field selection uncover some salient principles andanatomy of effective communication based on clarity. The fieldoutcome reveals the need to take clarity seriously if our communication must be devoid of misunderstanding, rift and rancour. Hence the reportstresses the need for a sender of message to have clear purpose forconveying messages which are received, interpreted and understood bythe receiver exactly as intended by the sender in such a way that both(sender and receiver) are satisfied and happy with the communicationoutcome. The paper recommends a checklist to keep ourcommunication simple, easy to read, understand and to the point

    No full text
Innovation has been viewed as one of the major drivers of economic growth but its exact effect is still a topic of debate among researchers. Innovation contributes to new products, services, processes, new product improvements and new business models. Any country or business venture, that has innovative culture in place can grow without difficulty. This is notwithstanding the fact that the innovative process is not always easy. This study investigates innovation and its effect on economic growth in Nigeria for the period 2013-2022. Ex post facto research design is employed, using secondary data sourced from WDIs, WIPO Statistics, CBN Statistical Bulletins, NBS and GII 2022. Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) regression analysis is employed to ascertain the effect of innovation on economic growth. The estimation was done with the aid of EViews version12.The results show that patents, trademarks, industrial designs and research and development expenditures do not have any significant effect on economic growth in Nigeria. The inflation rate as one of the control variables indicates a significant negative effect on economic growth, while tertiary school enrolment as proxy for human capital development, and foreign exchange rate do not show any significant positive effect on economic growth for the period covered by this study. The conclusion is that innovation does not drive economic growth in Nigeria. The policymakers should reassess the existing innovation policies and strategies and consider alternative approaches that would encourage innovation to promote economic growth in Nigeri

The Weight of Tradition and Superstitions: An Interrogation of Chinelo Okparanta's Under the Udala Trees

    No full text
The study examines the influence of tradition and superstitions on the existence of the characters of Chinelo Okparanta – an Igbo writer in the diaspora. The novel is set in 1960s Nigeria and follows the story of Ijeoma, a girl growing up in war-torn Nigeria who must come to terms with her sexuality and the conflict this presents in society. In particular, the paper is interested in examining the choking weight of tradition and superstition as portrayed in the selected literary text. It constitutes the discussion of various factors that affect people at different levels in association with tradition and in this case, same-sex relationships. The main objective of the paper is to analyse how homosexuality became a weighty tradition for an African writer of Igbo descent. Major scholarships on alternative sexualities have simultaneously exploited the erotic possibilities of same gender relationships and stigmatize it as grossly repulsive, un-African and most unlikely. The paper utilises W.E.B. Dubois' theory of “Double Consciousness” in the reading, analysis and interpretation of this text. The findings reveal that the writer's predilection to Eurocentric ways influences her assertions as reflected in her choice of characters that like her are cast in the in-between space. These characters shuttle between points of inclusion and exclusion and view heterosexuality as weighty and confounding. The dearth of queer criticisms is a reflection of the perception by most Africans that homosexuality is inherently alien to African cultures

These respondents were not part of the population for the study. The reliability of the instrument was conducted using Cronbach alpha reliability method which yielded overall co-efficient of 0.76 and 65, 73, 74, 63, and 78 for the different clusters respectively. Two research assistants were used. These were assigned to cover the College of Education. Data collected was through four points Likert questionnaires called Ubiquitous Learning Questionnaire (ULQ) with two sections; Afor demographic data collection and B for collecting information for the study. To answer the research questions, used to ascertain the deviation of data collected. A criterion of 2.50 was adopted as the cutoff point (agreement level) for the items. Hence, any mean point less than 2.50 was rejected. Data for the study collected from responses was analysed using one sample T – test with standard deviation. The response options of Strongly Aware (SA), Aware (A), Slightly Aware (SA), Not Aware (NA) were used. Based on the findings of the study, conclusions was drawn and recommended that the National University Commission (NUC) which is the regulatory body responsible for designing the curriculum, accreditation of programmes and general overseeing of the education programmes where the computer educators are trained should also take into account the Context-aware ubiquitous learning environments and the technologies
