    NEGATIVE INFLUENCE OF ICT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF JUNIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN NNEWI NORTH LGA OF ANAMBRA STATE

    This study investigated the negative influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the academic performance of junior secondary school students in Nnewi North Local Government Area, Anambra State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was adopted, involving 300 students from government-owned secondary schools using convenience and simple random sampling techniques. Data was collected through a self-structured questionnaire which is divided into two sections: one for demographic information and the other for responses. The instrument was subjected to face validation and a pre-test for clarity and accuracy. Its reliability was confirmed using the split-half method. Data were analyzed using frequency percentages, mean, and standard deviation. A decision rule was set: mean scores of 2.5 and above indicated high influence, while scores below 2.5 signified low influence. The findings highlighted several perceived negative effects of ICT on students’ academic performance. These results contribute to understanding the extent of ICT’s adverse impact and provide a basis for developing strategies to reduce its negative effects, ultimately supporting improved academic outcomes in the area.&nbsp

    TEACHERS’ INSTRUCTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS IN BIOLOGY IN OBINGWA LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ABIA STATE

    This study was designed to determine the effect of the use of Internet on teachers’ instructional effectiveness in Biology. Pre and post non-control design was used for the study. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The population of the study consisted of 32 SS11 Biology teachers in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia state Nigeria. A sample of twelve teachers, six males and six females gotten through multi-stage sampling technique were used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was Teachers’ Instructional Effectiveness Scale (TIES) with internal consistency of 0.90 established using Cronbach alpha approach. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. Hypotheses one and two were tested using the paired sample t-test and Analysis of Covariance respectively at 0.05 level of significance. The result revealed that the use of Internet in teaching enhances teachers’ instructional effectiveness. More so, there was no significant difference between the male and female teachers’ instructional effectiveness. It was therefore recommended that Biology teachers should use Internet in planning and delivering of lessons for improved instructional effectiveness.&nbsp

    Nexus between the perceptions of supervisors and supervisees: A panacea for instructional supervision and effectiveness in the 21st-century classroom in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria

    This study investigated the nexus between perceptions of supervisors and supervisees panacea as instructional supervision as a means of enhancing teaching effectiveness in the 21st-century classroom in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. The study employed a quantitative research approach, descriptive design were used. The population of the study comprised 44 public secondary school teachers. Data were collected through questionnaire from 21 teachers purposively chosen from a population of all public secondary schools in Bakassi. The instrument used for data collection was a 40item questionnaire titled: Perception of Supervisors and Supervisees on Instructional Supervision Effectiveness Questionnaire (PSSISEQ) and analyzed with SPSS descriptive statistic. The results indicated that the attitudes of the superintendents and principals generally were positive toward instructional supervision. For supervisors, classroom observations and feedback were highlighted, whereas for supervisees collaborative support and professional growth were important. The research findings were that the concept of positive instructional supervision makes a substantial meaningful make in the teachers\u27 effectiveness and thus, it is recommended that supportive and collaborative supervisory models should be institutionalized in response to the current educational needs

    Ethics and Bias in AI-Driven Education and Security Management in Nigerian Schools

    Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being introduced into Nigerian schools through educational technologies such as: adaptive learning platforms, automated grading, etc. And also through the adoption of certain security systems such as (CCTV surveillance, access control, threat-detection analytics). While these applications sought to improve learning outcomes and safer school environments, they also raise critical ethical concerns and the risk of algorithmic bias – challenges that are particularly acute in the Nigerian context. On this premise, this paper examines the historical and emerging use of AI in Nigeria’s education sector, identifies types of algorithmic bias relevant to Nigerian schools (data bias, model bias, decision bias), and analyses the ethics of student surveillance and data privacy under recent Nigerian data protection laws. The researchers, discussed the cultural, legal, and infrastructural challenges of deploying AI ethically in Nigeria, by drawing emphasis with case studies of local initiatives (e.g. Nigerian edtech startups, biometric attendance pilots). Finally, the researchers, offered recommendations for Nigerian policymakers, school administrators, and AI developers to foster responsible, equitable AI in Nigerian educational system and security management. Our analysis is grounded in scholarly research and international guidelines, as well as Nigeria-specific examples, to provide a comprehensive, culturally informed perspective.&nbsp

    This study explores the effectiveness of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in enhancing school security management within public secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. With increasing incidents of theft, vandalism, unauthorized access, and student unrest, traditional security measures have proven insufficient in safeguarding educational environments. AI technologies—such as motion-detection cameras, facial recognition systems, predictive analytics, and automated alert mechanisms—offer innovative solutions that improve surveillance, response times, and overall safety. Quantitative findings from existing literature indicate significant reductions in security breaches and faster incident resolution following AI implementation. Qualitative insights reveal increased stakeholder confidence in safety protocols and more data-informed decision-making among school administrators. Despite these benefits, challenges persist. Infrastructure limitations, financial constraints, lack of technical expertise, and ethical concerns around data privacy hinder widespread adoption. The study recommends piloting low-cost, scalable AI tools, strengthening human capacity through training, and integrating community-based security efforts. Establishing robust data governance frameworks and legal safeguards is essential to ensure responsible use and stakeholder trust. Strategic partnerships with technology providers, government agencies, and development organizations can offset costs and support sustainable implementation. The conclusions emphasizes AI’s potential to revolutionize school security management in Anambra State. When deployed thoughtfully and contextually, AI can create safer learning environments, support educational continuity, and prepare schools for future challenges. This study contributes to the growing discourse on technology-driven education reform and offers practical recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders seeking to enhance school safety through intelligent systems.&nbsp

    Molecular analysis of gamma irradiated rice cultivar FARO 44 for submergence tolerance using RAPD markers

    Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is an essential crop supporting over 60% of the global population, with rainfed lowland and deepwater ecosystems accounting for approximately 33% of global rice cultivation. However, submergence stress caused by seasonal flooding - exacerbated by climate change - significantly threatens rice productivity. This research sought to develop variability in submergence tolerance in FARO 44, a popular Nigerian rice variety, using gamma irradiation. The seeds were given gamma rays at 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 Gy and submerged entirely for five days at the 21-day seedling level. Plant height and survival rate were some of the measured agro-morphological traits. The highest survival rate (93.75%) was observed at both 150 Gy and 200 Gy doses. To evaluate the genetic diversity within these lines of irradiated rice, molecular characterization was conducted with six primers of Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD). The results suggest that 150 Gy and 200 Gy doses had marked increases in survival rates, which indicated improved tolerance. Analysis of the polymorphism showed significant results in the RAPD analysis, where primer B04 had the most considerable polymorphic information content of 0.82 and genetic diversity of 0.84, indicating genetic differentiation and effective change induction. These results confirm that generating rice genotypes tolerant to submergence using gamma irradiation is feasible, while the genetic diversity caused by irradiation can easily be monitored using RAPD markers

    SUICIDE PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT AMONG ADOLESCENTS IN NIGERIA: A MULTIDIMENSIONAL APPROACH

    Globally, Suicide has been classified as a serious public health challenge. And the risk of this challenge is predicted to increase over future decades. It is evidence based that the occurrence and frequency of completed (suicide acts) and attempted (suicide actions) suicide rank high among low-and middle-income countries and percentage of mortality indicated 85%. Out of this number, those aged 15-30 (Adolescent-adulthood) years are regarded as most at risk. So, the onus of this paper circled on why this age bracket, the contextual reasons, the theoretical backings and Psychological preventive methods to circumvent it. The preventive approach was multidimensional involving Psychologists, Psychiatrists, Doctors/Physicians, Public health experts and social workers. Others include Paediatricians, School counsellors, Teachers, Students-leadership and Parents body. There is also a need for more qualitative and evidence-based studies, which will address suicide cases on socio-cultural context and improve on standards of living among young Nigerians

    ADMINISTRATIVE STRATEGIES ADOPTED BY PRINCIPALS FOR MANAGING SOCIAL MEDIA USAGE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN IMO STATE

    The study adopted survey research design to examine administrative strategies adopted by principals for managing social media usage among secondary schools students in Imo state. Two research questions guided the study and the population of the study is made up of 300 principals of public secondary schools in Imo State. Simple random sampling technique was used to select 178 principals for the study. The researcher developed instrument titled Administrative Strategies for Managing the Usage of Social Media among Secondary School Students Questionnaire (ASMUSMASSSQ) was used as instrument for data collection. It contained 20 items designed in two clusters on a 4-point scale was used as the instrument for data collection. The instrument was validated by three experts, two from the Department of Educational Management and Policy and one from Measurement and Evaluation in the Department of Educational Foundations, all in the Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. The instrument\u27s reliability was determined using the Cronbach Alpha coefficient which yielded an alpha coefficient of 0.78. In analyzing the data, mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings of the study showed that precautionary strategies were adopted while supportive strategies have not been adopted by the principals in managing social media usage among secondary schools students in Imo state. Based on the findings, it was concluded that social media usage should be encouraged among the students as it is one of the emerging technological innovations in education but cautions must be applied by the school in the usage among the students to avoid addiction and social media support services should be provided in schools. It was recommended that government should set out rules and regulations that will guide the use of social media in schools and teachers and stakeholders in education should provide supportive service to needy students.&nbsp

    PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVES OF VOCATIONAL EDUCATION, EXPERIMENTATION, AND SOCIAL PROGRESS IN ANAMBRA STATE

    This study investigated the philosophical perspectives of vocational education, experimentation, and social progress in Anambra State. Three research questions guided the study. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study consisted of 8788 teachers in public secondary schools in Anambra State. The sample size was 600 teachers, selected through simple random sampling technique. A researcher-made questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The questionnaire was validated by three experts, two in Philosophy of Education and one in Measurement and Evaluation, all from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The reliability was calculated using Cronbach Alpha for each of the subsections; 0.81, 0.77 and 0.79 were the scores obtained for the subsections. Mean rating was used for data analysis. The findings also showed that philosophical perspectives on vocational education, experimentation, and social progress in Anambra State reveal a complex and multifaceted landscape. The studies underscore the need for a nuanced approach, integrating practical skills, social justice, human development, community engagement, and cultural sensitivity. Effective vocational education should prioritize contextual learning, empowerment, and social transformation. Experimentation must balance empirical rigor with social responsibility, indigenous knowledge, and environmental sustainability. Social progress demands participatory development, critical consciousness, and African-centered epistemologies. These philosophical perspectives illuminate the interconnectedness of vocational education, experimentation, and social progress in Anambra State. By embracing this interconnectedness, stakeholders can foster inclusive, sustainable, and equitable development, empowering individuals and communities to thrive. It was recommended among others that government should establish a Vocational Education Revitalization Program is crucial. This program should modernize vocational education curricula, upgrade infrastructure, and provide training for instructors, focusing on emerging industries like technology and renewable energy. Again, government should create an experimentation and Innovation Hub is also vital, bringing together researchers, entrepreneurs, and industry experts to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation. Funding should support cutting-edge research, prototype development, and startup incubation.&nbsp
