Uses of Psychological Coping Mechanisms and Resilience in Curbing Insecurity and Out-of-School Problems in Kogi State, Nigeria.

    No full text
In Kogi State, Nigeria, the challenges of insecurity and an increasing population of out-of-school children have created significant socio-economic and educational concerns. This paper examines the roles of psychological coping mechanisms and resilience in addressing these issues, aiming to understand how effective psychological strategies can mitigate the adverse impacts on affected children and communities. The paper explores adaptive coping strategies utilised by children facing educational disruptions, including social support networks, cognitive restructuring, spiritual practices, and creativity. It further reviewed factors contributing to resilience, such as personality traits, positive role models, and community-based interventions that promote emotional well-being and foster longterm adaptive skills. The article revealed that while insecurity and educational instability present profound psychological challenges, children employ diverse coping mechanisms that support their mental health and help them navigate adversities. Resilience emerges as a crucial factor, with support from families, peers, and community initiatives playing a significant role in bolstering children’s ability to persevere. The paper suggests that targeted interventions such as mental health services, educational opportunities, and empowerment programmes are essential for strengthening resilience among out-of-school children. By fostering these adaptive traits and coping mechanisms, policymakers and educators can develop comprehensive, culturally sensitive strategies to curb insecurity and reintegrate out of-school children into educational systems, ultimately enhancing their long-term well-being and potential for success.&nbsp

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS TO ETHICAL TRANSFORMATION IN AFRICAN EDUCATION SYSTEMS

    No full text
The African education system, shaped by colonial legacies, socio-cultural influences, and historical traumas, faces significant psychological barriers that hinder ethical transformation. These barriers - such as cognitive dissonance, cultural biases, fear of change, historical trauma, and lack of empowerment - pose considerable challenges to the creation of an education system that fosters fairness, social justice, and inclusivity. Cognitive dissonance often arises when educators and students are confronted with ethical shifts that conflict with long-held beliefs and practices. Cultural biases, deeply embedded in both the educational content and delivery, perpetuate unequal opportunities and hinder the adoption of progressive ethical standards. Additionally, the lingering psychological effects of colonialism and other historical injustices create emotional and mental barriers to embracing educational reforms. This paper explores these psychological barriers and their implications for ethical transformation in African education systems. Drawing on existing literature and educational theories, it discusses potential solutions, including the promotion of critical pedagogy, culturally relevant curricula, community engagement, teacher empowerment, and mental health support. By addressing these psychological challenges, African education systems can pave the way for a more ethical, inclusive, and socially just educational environment.&nbsp

    No full text
This study investigates the effects of agricultural education and technology usage on genetic selection and climate-resilient fish farming practices among fish farmers in Oyo State, Nigeria. Recognizing the significant impact of climate change on inland fisheries, the study specifically examined the extent to which educational attainment and technological awareness facilitate the adoption of sustainable aquaculture techniques. The study employed a descriptive survey design, and data was collected using structured survey involving 120 fish farmers, and data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Probit, and Tobit regression models. Findings revealed that most respondents were male (73.3%), married (65.0%), and possessed at least secondary education (66.6%). Access to agricultural extension services (60.0%) and credit facilities (54.2%) was moderate, while cooperative membership was prevalent (65.0%). Probit regression results demonstrated that tertiary education (β = 1.320, p < 0.01), access to training (β = 0.890, p < 0.01), and availability of credit facilities (β = 0.660, p < 0.01) significantly increased farmers\u27 likelihood of adopting genetic selection practices. Conversely, high technology costs (β = -0.470, p < 0.01) represented a substantial barrier to adoption. The Tobit regression further indicated that training in climate-resilient practices (β = 1.252, p < 0.01), technology awareness (β = 0.785, p < 0.01), and farm size (β = 0.621, p < 0.01) positively influenced the extent of adoption. The study also identified significant challenges limiting adoption, including high costs of technology, limited access to training, and inadequate extension services. This research underscores the need for increased investment in agricultural education, affordable technological solutions, accessible credit facilities, and robust government support policies to foster climate-resilient and productive aquaculture practices in Oyo State.&nbsp

This study investigated the influence of early marriage on enrolment and retention of girl child in Federal Unity Colleges in North Central Nigeria. The study was guided by two objectives, two research questions and correspondent null hypotheses. The study adopted an expost facto research design and the population of the study comprises of 15, 177 SSII female students from twenty- nine Federal Unity Colleges in North Central Nigeria out of which a sample size of 375 respondents was obtained using Multi Stage sampling procedure. A questionnaire tagged “Early Marriage, Enrolment and Retention of Girl Child Questionnaire (EME&RGCQ)” was developed by the researcher to obtain data from the female students of Federal Government Unity Colleges of North Central Nigeria and Proforma on Girl-Child Enrolment and Retention in Federal Government Unity Colleges in North Central Nigeria. Mean and standard deviations were used to answer the research questions while the formulated hypotheses were however tested at 0.05 level of significance using t- test. Findings from the study revealed a significance influence of early marriage on enrolment of girl child in Unity Colleges in North Central Nigeria. The results also showed a significance influence of early marriage on retention of girl child in Unity Colleges in North Central Nigeria. The study concluded that early marriages are common phenomena in the north central zone of Nigeria and in most African societies where some socio-cultural norms and practices such as value attached to bride wealth influenced parents to marry off their daughters before maturity or before completing their secondary education which had negative impact on enrolment and retention of female students from Federal Government Unity Colleges in the area.  The study therefore recommended among others that there is need for Government at all levels to come up with legislation that will protect the right of girl- child by not marrying her before the age of 18 or age of maturity to safeguard their education. &nbsp
