    No full text
The paper examined governance and accountability issues relating to the distribution of the properties of a dead person in Nigeria. This study becomes necessary as many families of deceased persons are: always at loggerheads with themselves as a result of the properties left behind by the deceased person; the huge compensations paid to executors of estates; cosmetic accountability and lack of transparency by the executors of the estate of deceased persons. The specific aim of this study was to investigate the reasons why there are continued family squabbles over the distribution of the properties of their deceased bread winner. To pursue this study, agency theory was used to guide the researcher as the executor (agent) acts on behalf of the testator (principal) after his death. The methods used to gather data were by interviewing lawyers, accountants and executors who are involved in the distribution of a dead man’s properties. The relations of deceased persons were also interviewed. Data were also gathered from books, newspapers and Journal articles. Results showed that the absence of transparency and accountability in the distribution of legacies by executors fueled the embers of bitterness and squabbles. Another result is the refusal of the executor to give legacy to whom it should be given to. Furthermore, non-equitable distribution of legacies to the beneficiaries and finally, the testators’ refusal to give gifts to some of their children. It was recommended that the testator should engage executors that are professionally qualified and having integrity; British ways of making will should stop thus giving ways to our customs and traditions. legacies should be properly and professionally written by a lawyer; the executor should honestly distribute the legacies without bias. Legacy should not be short changed by the executors by not giving a good property to whom it is due

    No full text
Insurance is a mechanism through which members of the society channel their resources into a pool in order to address the impact of perils that could cause devastating losses to them. Insurance per se is a form of cooperative for pooling of funds for the purposes of indemnifying losses. This study aimed at reviewing the operations of the cooperative insurance model by looking at their challenges, and benefits to the public. This study involved the use of primary data collected from respondents who are staff of co-operative insurance societies operating in Nigeria. A total of 150 copies of questionnaires were administered to the respondents from the 3000 cooperative societies in Lagos State, Nigeria. The descriptive survey research design was used in carrying out this study. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used in the test of hypotheses using Chi-square as a tool. The findings showed that there have been few studies on cooperative insurance society in Nigeria as compared to what is tenable in countries like Japan or Sri Lanka. However, this study also found that irrespective of the lower capital base of the cooperative insurance society in Nigeria, these societies provide cover for high-risk perils such as in motor insurance and more so as they do not have reinsurance protection for such covers. Cooperative insurance society could be used as a vehicle for increasing insurance penetration in Nigeria, but there is need for a review of the general operational guidelines for them

    No full text
This study examined the effect of monetary policy on the economic performance of state governments in Southeast Nigeria from 2015 to 2023. The research specifically analyzes how fluctuations in interest rates, exchange rates, inflation rates, and broad money supply have influenced revenue generation and infrastructural development in this region. The research was motivated by the need to understand how these macroeconomic factors influence the fiscal performance of state governments, particularly in a developing economy like Nigeria, where economic instability and fluctuating financial conditions can severely affect government operations. The population of the study was 16,395,555 which comprises the population of the five states (Anambra, Imo, Abia, Enugu and Ebonyi) in Southeast geopolitical zone. The sample size for the study was 400, and this was obtained using Taro-Yamane (1964) formula. Out of the 400 questionnaire that was distributed, 397 was properly filled and returned. A descriptive research design was adopted, utilizing both primary and secondary data. Data analysis was performed using Pearson correlation and regression analysis to test the hypotheses and determine the relationships between the macroeconomic variables and state-level fiscal outcomes. The results show that interest rate fluctuations have a significant positive effect on revenue generation; Exchange rate fluctuations also significantly influence infrastructural development. Similarly, inflation rate changes were found to significantly affect infrastructural development. Finally, broad money supply was found to significantly impact the revenue generation capacity of state governments. The study concludes that stable macroeconomic policies and effective financial management are essential for sustainable revenue generation and infrastructure development in Southeast Nigeria. It recommends that state governments must incorporate macroeconomic considerations into their fiscal and infrastructural planning to ensure stability and sustainable growth, coordinate with fiscal and monetary authorities to manage inflation, and engage with key stakeholders to mitigate the adverse impacts of macroeconomic fluctuations. &nbsp

THE IMPACT OF LEAN MANUFACTURING TECHNIQUES ON WASTE REDUCTION IN GUINNESS NIGERIAN PLC

    No full text
Lean management has emerged as a transformative methodology for optimizing organizational operations through waste reduction and efficiency improvement. This study analyzes the implementation of lean practices at Guinness Nigeria Plc, focusing on key metrics such as Just-In-Time (JIT) production, continuous improvement (Kaizen), reduction in waiting time, and defect minimization. Using a mixed-methods approach, the study evaluates primary and secondary data, supported by statistical analysis to assess the significance of lean practices on operational performance. The findings indicate that JIT significantly reduces overproduction and inventory waste (p < 0.05), while continuous improvement initiatives enhance product quality by systematically addressing production inefficiencies (p < 0.01). However, challenges persist in managing waiting times and defect rates, which are statistically significant but show weaker correlations to overall efficiency improvements (p = 0.07). These results underscore the need for targeted interventions, such as advanced process monitoring and employee training, to address these issues. By integrating lean management more effectively, Guinness Nigeria Plc can achieve enhanced operational efficiency, reduced costs, and improved competitiveness in the brewing industry. This research provides actionable insights for similar organizations seeking to adopt lean practices in dynamic markets

EFFECT OF JOB BURNOUT DIMENSIONS ON WORKPLACE DEVIANCE AMONG ACADEMIC STAFF OF KADUNA STATE UNIVERSITY, KADUNA

    No full text
Academic staff of universities are supposed to be role models to students and the society at large, hence, they are expected to exhibit positively inclined behaviours. However, reverse is the case as there are many cases of academic staff`s engagement in various forms of deviant behaviours. Job burnout has been identified as the main trigger of workplace deviant behaviour among academic staff especially in Kaduna State University (KASU). Consequently, the current study emerges to examine the effect of the dimensions of job burnout on workplace deviant behaviour among the academic staff of KASU. The study drawing from stressor-emotion model, draws a total of 395 academic staff of the university through stratified sampling design and data were collected through the administration of questionnaire. PLS-SEM was used to test the hypotheses developed for the study at 5% significance level. The findings of the study revealed that emotional exhaustion has an insignificant effect on workplace deviance while depersonalization and reduced personal accomplishment were found to have a positive significant effect on workplace deviant behaviour. The study recommends among others that the university management should sustain its well-being program to suppress the chances of academic staff exposure to emotional exhaustion, provide recognition and reward programmes, and finally, the university management should provide staff`s access to research grants and resources that will boost their feelings of personal accomplishment. The study contributes to theory by examining the multidimensional perspective of job burnout on workplace deviance. On the practical perspective, the findings provide warning to the management of the university to take steps aimed at reducing job burnout so that the negative consequences of WDB are suppressed. The study concludes that the engagement of workplace deviant behaviour among academic staff in KASU is triggered by job burnout
