    No full text
Artificial Intelligence is transforming various aspects of human life. The evolution of Artificial Intelligence creates concerns over abuse of human rights and opportunities for human rights to thrive. The impact of artificial intelligence on human rights has not enjoyed judicial attention in the Nigeria. There is therefore the need to consider whether judicial interpretation of constitutional provisions guaranteeing rights, are sufficient to protect human rights which are impacted by Artificial Intelligence as it evolves. This study undertakes a critical review of judicial perspectives on the intersection of human rights and artificial intelligence in Nigeria. The study is purely doctrinal in nature, andemployed the use of both primary and secondary sources of law in identifying and explaining the themes of this analysis. The study finds that while there are no specific actions affording the courts the opportunity to analyse the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights, the Courts have interpreted the law on integral aspects of Artificial Intelligence in its interaction with human rights, which will form a background for the development of effective programs and policies for the protection of rightsin the face of Artificial Intelligence. The study recommends the utilization of Artificial Intelligence for the protection of human rights and the progressive interpretation of constitutional provisions to provide ample protection for human rights in the face of Artificial Intelligence

    No full text
The period of insolvency is a critical period for a company and its creditors. The appointment of a receiver or a receiver and manager to recover the creditors\u27 investment is the conventional method of dealing with such corporate financial difficulty. The debenture holders or their trustees may appoint the receiver/manager out of court or through the court. This approach has been criticized as lacking in promoting business rehabilitation and protection of greater shareholders interest hence the birth of company administration as a broader business rescue mechanism. This paper examines the law relating to receivers/ managers and administration in Nigeria. It also looks at developments in the law beyond receivers and managers in the United Kingdom, United States of America, South Africa and Australia to see what Nigeria can learn from these jurisdictions. It suggests that the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 should be amended and those parts of it dealing with receivership and winding up should be consolidated with the Bankruptcy Act 2004 dealing with personal insolvency into a single insolvency legislation. It also suggests that the new insolvency legislation should contain minimum standard for insolvency practitioners in Nigeria

The paper adopted the doctrinal research methodology where primary and secondary sources of law were evaluated. The paper concluded that Trade Policy of Nigeria 2023 – 2027 is part of the government’s renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to attract foreign Investment, boost exports, create jobs and prioritize value addition in non-oil exports. The paper therefore recommended among others for policy reform that aligns with Nigeria’s economic goals and its international trade obligations

TOWARDS AN INCLUSIVE AND RIGHTS-BASED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN NIGERIA

    No full text
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in national development strategies, its dual potential to either advance or undermine sustainable development and human rights demands urgent scholarly and regulatory attention. In Nigeria, the integration of AI technologies in sectors such as healthcare, education, and environmental management presents remarkable opportunities for accelerating progress towards the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, the lack of a coherent legal and policy framework for AI governance exposes the country to serious risks, including algorithmic bias, data privacy violations, and social exclusion, that could aggravate existing inequalities and infringe upon human rights. This study examines the intersection of AI, sustainable development, and human rights in Nigeria, and proposes an inclusive and rights-based AI governance framework for the country. The study assesses the adequacy of Nigeria’s current AI governance framework, identifying key challenges to include regulatory gaps, weak data protection enforcement, and limited stakeholder participation. In response, the study offers targeted legal and policy recommendations grounded in international best practices and ethical principles: the development of sector-specific AI legislation, the institutionalization of multi-stakeholder governance mechanisms, and the promotion of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity in AI design and deployment. Importantly, the study argues that aligning AI governance with sustainable development and human rights imperatives is not only a legal and ethical necessity, but also a strategic pathway for Nigeria to harness AI as a force for equitable and inclusive growth

Digital divide remains a significant challenge in ensuring equal access to ethical and values in education. It significantly impacts in the teaching and learning of science, especially in developing regions like Nigeria. This divide hampers access to quality education, affecting both students and educators, addressing this issue is crucial for sustainable national development.  As technology continues to revolutionize education, disparities in digital access create inequalities in the moral development of individuals, which in turn affects national growth and stability. This paper examines the implications of the digital divide on the provision of ethics and values education. It advocates for re-engineering of national strategies to bridge this gap and foster inclusive, sustainable development. By leveraging technology equitably and responsibly, nations can empower citizens with the moral compass necessary to navigate modern challenges and contribute meaningfully to national growth&nbsp

Quest for Home in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah: Reversing the Push-Pull Conditions

    No full text
In migration studies, the trajectory of motion that often finds people in spaces other than their original habitat has always been demonstrated to be prompted by nauseating factors in the homelands and amplified by the perceived attractive factors in the foreign land of interest. Such factors are regarded as the push and pull factors of migration as enunciated by Everett Lee. In the bid to escape such nauseating conditions in the homelands, migrants engage in a voyage of quest for greener pastures at the pulling destinations. The direction of this movement has always appeared to be linear – from the Global South to the North, no thanks to the ugly history of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade of the sixteenth to the nineteenth century and the colonial experiences of most African countries with their subsisting neo-imperialistic influences. But much of diaspora literature has always culminated in what many scholars have dubbed as return migration, whereby most migrants eventually begin to yearn to return to their homelands as a reaction to the many oddities they begin to experience abroad. This present work seeks to explore those complexities that usually occasion such quests for return migration through a textual analysis of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah. Hinging on Lee’s push-pull factor theory of migration as its framework, this work discovers that such a quest usually takes the shape of some sort of reversal of the push and pull conditions that initially orchestrated the migration in the first place
