    NEEDS ASSESSMENT OF THE ADEQUACY OF ACCOUNTING EDUCATION CURRICULUM CONTENTS IN FEDERAL COLLEGES OF EDUCATION IN SOUTH-SOUTH, NIGERIA

    The study conducted a needs assessment of the aadequacy of accounting education curriculumcontents in federal colleges of education in South-South, Nigeria. One research question wasraised and one null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study adoptedsequential explanatory mixed methods research design. The entire population of 148 (68accounting educators and 148 final year accounting education students) was studied withoutsampling. A five-point rating scale questionnaire which was validated by experts and semistructured interview schedule were used for data collection. The questionnaire has a reliabilitycoefficient value of 0.73 using the internal consistency method with Cronbach alpha. Mean,standard deviation and t-test were used to analyze quantitative data while thematic analysis wasused for qualitative data. The study revealed that aaccounting educators rated the curriculumcontents of the programme as very highly adequate while the graduating students rated them ashighly adequate. This means that small gap which is not significant exists between ratings of theaccounting educators and graduating students on the adequacy of curriculum contents of theprogramme for skills acquisition. Furthermore, need for curriculum enrichment was the themeidentified. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the lack of skills to secure employmentamong graduates of the programme is related to other factors and not contents of the curriculumalthough there are few areas the contents do not align with today’s sophisticated accountingworkplace. It was recommended among others that curriculum developers should obtain updatedinformation from employers of labour on skills they need from accounting education graduatesin order to emphasize them in the curriculum and prescribe requirements for developing them instudents for smooth transition from school to work

    SUPERVISORS’ RATING OF PEOPLE SKILLS POSSESSED BY OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT (OTM) GRADUATE WORKERS FOR EFFECTIVE WORK PERFORMANCE IN ANAMBRA STATE

    The need to ensure that Office Technology and Management (OTM) students in Nigerianinstitutions are adequately equipped with requisite skills for effective work performancenecessitated this study. The study ascertained supervisors’ rating of people skills possessed bygraduates of the programme working in organizations in Anambra State. One research questionguided the study and three null hypotheses were tested. The study employed descriptive surveyresearch design. Population of 304 supervisors from public and private organizations inAnambra State was studied. Census survey sampling technique was used. A structured 5-pointrating scale questionnaire containing nine items which was validated by experts was used fordata collection. The reliability of the instrument was tested using Cronbach’s alpha method ofinternal consistency and it yielded reliability coefficient value of 0.75 indicating that theinstrument is valid. The arithmetic mean was used to answer the research question while t-testand ANOVA was used to test the null hypotheses 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealedthat OTM graduate workers in public and private organizations in Anambra State fairlypossessed people skills. Type of Organization, gender and work experience had significantinfluence in the supervisors’ ratings. Based on the findings, it was concluded that the OTMgraduates were not adequately equipped with requisite skills for effective work performanceupon in the course of their training. It was, therefore, recommended among others thatOTMgraduate workers in Anambra State should engage in self-development programmes to improvetheir people skills for effective work performance

    The laudable objectives of entrepreneurship education have not been achieved because of thechunk of graduates unemployed, seemingly due to lack of requisite skills for employment inmodern offices. This problem prompted this study to investigate funding-related administrativeimpediments to the effective implementation of entrepreneurship education programme inuniversities insouth-east Nigeria. One research questions guided the study while two nullhypotheses were formulated. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The entirepopulation of 79 administrative staff of entrepreneurship development centres in universities inSouth East, Nigeria was used for data collection. Questionnaire was used to collect data. Thequestionnaire was validated by three experts, and its internal consistency yielded a co-efficientvalue of 0.79 using Cronbach Alpha Method was obtained. Mean and standard deviation wasused to answer the research questions while t-Test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05level of significance. Findings revealed that administrative staff of entrepreneurshipdevelopment centres agreed on funding-related administrative impediments to the effectiveimplementation of the entrepreneurship education programme in universities in South EastNigeria

    GENDER-RELATIVE EFFECT OF PROJECT-BASED LEARNING METHOD ON ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT AND RETENTION OF TECHNICAL COLLEGE STUDENTS IN BASIC ELECTRICITY

    The gender-related controversies associated with effects of various teaching methods gave riseto this study. This study was conducted to ascertain the gender-relative effect of project-basedlearning method on academic achievement and retention of technical college students in BasicElectricity. The study was carried out in Anambra state and adopted the quasi-experimentalresearch design. This was precisely, pretest, posttest, delayed posttest non-randomized controlgroup design which involved groups of students in their intact classes. A sample of 92 NTC IIstudents was drawn from a population of 179 students of state owned technical colleges inAnambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses tested at 0.05 level ofsignificance guided the study. Basic Electricity Achievement Test (BEAT), a 40-item multiplechoice test which was based on the units covered in the study, served as the instrument used fordata collection. The BEAT and lesson plans for both control and experimental groups were allvalidated by three experts from the faculty of education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka. Thereliability coefficient of the instrument was found to be 0.82 using KR-20. Mean and standarddeviation were used to answer the research questions, while Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA)was employed to test the hypotheses. Findings revealed that male and female technical collegestudents taught Basic electricity using project-based learning method had higher achievementand retention scores than those taught using the conventional teaching method. Also findingsrevealed that there was no significant difference in the mean achievement and retention scoresof the male and female students taught basic electricity using PBLM. Based on the findings ofthis study, it was concluded that PBLM has the potential to improve male and female technicalcollege students’ academic achievement and retention in Basic electricity. Consequently, it wasrecommended among others that Basic electricity teachers should use PBLM in the teaching ofBasic electricity and grant students equal opportunity during classroom instructions irrespectiveof gender so as to enhance students’ academic achievement and retention in the subject

    IMPLEMENTERS’ RATINGS OF RESOURCE CHALLENGES FACING OFFICE TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME IN POLYTECHNICS IN SOUTH-EAST, NIGERIA

    This study on implementer’s ratings of resource challenges facing Office Technology and Management (OTM) programme in polytechnics in South-East, Nigeria, was necessitated by the need to enhance the quality and product of the programme. Four research questions guided the study and four hypotheses were tested. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study comprised 92 OTM lecturers in all the six polytechnics offering OTM programme in South-East, Nigeria. The entire population was used for the study because the size was small and manageable; therefore, there was no sampling. A self structured questionnaire was developed by the researcher titled “Questionnaire on Resource Challenges facing Office Technology and Management Programme”. The instrument was face validated by three experts. The instrument was trial tested using Cronbach Alpha to calculate the internalconsistency of the instrument and an overall reliability index of 0.83 was obtained. Arithmetic mean and standard deviation was used to answer the research questions, while t-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings of the study revealed that the implementers strongly agreed that resource challenges facing OTM programme in the SouthEast, Nigeria include: ICT, material, humanand instructional resources. Furthermore, institution ownership significantly influenced implementers’ ratings on human resource challenges only. Based on these findings, it was recommended among others that modern ICT equipment and facilities required inteaching Office Technology and Management courses should be adequately provided to enhance teaching and learning in OTM programme

    UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING OF BUSINESS STUDIES IN ANAMBRA STATE

    The study determined the utilization of instructional materials in teaching andlearning of business studies in secondary schools in Anambra State. Two researchquestions guided the study and two null hypotheses were. Descriptive surveyresearch design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised296 business subject teachers in all public secondary schools in Anambra State. Afive point rating scale questionnaire which was validated by experts was used fordata collection. Cronbach alpha was used to test the reliability of the instrument andreliability index of .82 was obtained. Data collected from the study were analyzedusing mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and ascertainthe homogeneity of the respondents while Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was usedto test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The results showed that thebusiness studies teachers seldomly utilized projected visual instructional materialsand often utilized non-projected visual instructional materials in teaching. Thefindings further revealed that teachers did not differ significantly in their meanratings based on years of experience.It was concluded that utilization ofinstructional materials by business studies teachers should help secondary schoolstudents acquire entrepreneurial skills that will enable them to be self-sufficient inthe competitive world of work. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended,among others, that relevant authorities should organize seminars, in-servicetraining, conferences and workshops for business studies teachers on the utilizationof instructional materials for effective learning outcomes

    The need to encourage students’ utilization of library resources for better academicperformance necessitated this study. The study ascertained the benefit of utilizationof library resources as perceived by business subjects’ students in secondaryschools in Ogidi zone, Anambra State. Descriptive survey research design wasadopted for the study. The population consisted of 3577 business subject studentsand a sample size of 520was drawn for the study using stratified random samplingtechniqueOne research question guided the study and two null hypotheses weretested. An 11- item structured questionnaire validated by three experts was used fordata collection. The reliability of the instrument was established using test re-testmethod and data analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient;this yielded reliability coefficient of 0.83. Data were analyzed using mean andstandard deviation to answer the research question and to determine the closenessof the respondent’s means, while z-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05level of significance. The results revealed that business subject students insecondary schools in Ogidi zone, Anambra State agreed that library resources helpstudents to use and cite materials accurately. The students strongly agree thatlibrary resources offer an environment that is conducive for study. It was found thatthe business subject students did not differ significantly on their mean responses onthe benefit of utilization of library resources in secondary schools based on genderand location of the school libraries. It was recommended among others thatmanagement of secondary schools in Anambra State should organize seminars andworkshop programs to enlighten student on the relevant and the use of libraryresources. This will help in enhancing the usage of library resources amongstudents and improve their academic performance

    The study assessed the effectiveness of demonstration method in entrepreneurship education in tertiary institutions in South-South Nigeria. The objective of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the demonstration method in teaching entrepreneurship education in tertiary institutions in South-South Nigeria. A descriptive survey method was adopted. Questionnaire was used to sample opinions of 684 lecturers selected by stratified random sampling from a total population of 13,607 lecturers. The results of the study were presented using tables and frequencies. Analysis of variance was used in analyzing the hypothesis. The findings indicate that demonstration method was effective in teaching entrepreneurship education in tertiary institutions in South-South Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was concluded that using demonstration method in teaching entrepreneurship education is effective. It was recommended that entrepreneurship education lecturers should make concerted efforts to use demonstration teaching method that is considered effective in teaching their student

    ENTREPRENEURS’ RATING OF TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES REQUIRED OF BUSINESS EDUCATION GRADUATES FOR ESTABLISHING SMALL AND MEDIUM SCALE ENTERPRISES IN ANAMBRA STATE

    The need to improve employment opportunities and self-reliant necessitated this study to ascertain entrepreneurs’ rating of technical competencies required of business education graduates for establishing small and medium scale enterprises in Anambra State. One research question guided the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was employed. The population consisted 811 small and medium scale entrepreneurs in Anambra State. A total of 243 of these entrepreneurs were sampled using the proportionate stratified sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire titled “Technical Competencies for Establishing Small and Medium Scale Enterprises Questionnaire (TCESMSEQ)” with 10 items. The instrument was validated by three experts. The reliability coefficient was 0.79 and was obtained using Crombach alpha method. Out of a total of 243 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 232 copies were retrieved which represented 95 percent retrieval. The data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation in answering the research questions and to check the respondent responses to the mean. The z-test and ANOVA were used for testing the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that technical competencies were considered required of business education graduates for establishing small and medium scale enterprises. The findings also revealed that gender had no significant influence on SMEs operators’ consideration of the technical competencies required of business education graduates for establishing small and medium scale enterprises. Based on the findings of this study,it was concluded that SMEs entrepreneurs in Anambra State were of the opinion that Business Education graduates required technical, competencies for the establishment of small and medium scale enterprises. The study recommended among others that the administrators of business education programmes should partner with entrepreneurs to organize training programmes that will help equip business education studentswith the requisite technical competencie

    This study ascertained the perceptions of small and medium scale enterprises managers in Anambra State on the extent employees’ participation in decision making improved their work performance. Two research questions guided the study while four null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 1124 managers of small and medium scale enterprises in Anambra State and a sample of 225 managers of small and medium scale enterprises in the Anambra State was selected through stratified simple random sampling technique. A 25-itemvalidated questionnaire titled Questionnaire on Contributions of Employees’Participation in Decision-Making and Organizational Performance (QCEPDMOP) was used for data collection. The questionnaire was structured on a 5-point likert scale. Test re-test was used for reliability. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to analyze the data to obtain reliability coefficient of 0.93 and 0.85 for clusters B1 and B2 respectively with overall reliability coefficient of 0.89. Out of the 225copies of the questionnaire distributed, 209 were retrieved and used for data analysis. Mean, standard deviation, t-test and ANOVA were used for data analysis. Findings of the study revealed that employees’ participation in decision making improves their commitment and effective management of resources to a high extent. Also, that gender and years of experience did not affect employees’ participation in decision-making. Based on the findings, managers of SMEs in Anambra State should strive to bring in competent employees to the enterprise for effective management of the organization
