Corruption and Marxist Tendency in Nigerian Society: A Critical Approach to Ngozi Chuma-Udeh’s The Presidential Handshake
Literature is a tool, a mirror with which writers explore their societies. Writers have become the voice of truth from whose hands and inspirations the society strives towards peace, harmony, peaceful co-existence and above all decorum. Corruption as a socio malaise gave rise to post independence disillusionment. Corruption is an inherent foible that formed the backdrop to most Nigerian post-independence literature. It is imperative that the researcher here did an impressive study of the concept of corruption as explored in Ngozi Chuma-Udeh\u27s The Presidential Handshake to reveal the pathological effects of corruption in a nation. Subsequently, the fiction under study, reveals to a great extent the issues that serve and address the general interest of the study. The novelist has to examine corruption and its practices in all forms, making the readers comprehend how corruption has brought or produced nothing but economic degradation and social unrest. Indeed, the novelist created awareness, and drew attention to several social issues of her time. The novelist is also against the deplorable human conditions, against the unbridgeable gulf between the proletariats and the bourgeoisie classes; hence the fiction is a clear example of literary work exposing the evils of selfishness, corruption and materialistic tendencies in the Nigerian society. The theoretical framework is Marxism which refers to the social, economic and political doctrines of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, and their disciples. They teach a theory of value based upon labour, the economic determination of all social actions and institutions, the class struggle as the basic pattern in history, the researcher did a thorough analysis of the work under study and identified insincere and corrupt masses as the major challenge in our contemporary societies as portrayed in the novels

One hundred and ten data gathered from Hausa names have been purposely selected for Pragmatic analysis because of their assertive, penetrating, and insightful messages. The connotational meaning of the selected names was analysed using the pragmatic and linguistic tools of context. The study examines the pragmatic inferences of the names by exploring the reasons and circumstances of the selected names. The names were purposively selected through primary and secondary methods. The data were grouped according to different circumstances surrounding the names. The findings from this study shows that Hausa names do not only identify a person but also communicate so much about the circumstances surrounding the person’s birth. Another significant reason is the fact that Hausa people have now recognized the importance of preserving Hausa language. The study concludes that names perform several practs like informing, assuring, pronouncing, or expressing gratitude which are reflective of the emotional link or expectations of the giver of the personal name

A Pragmatic Study of Forms and Functions of Proverbs in Nigeria
Thoughts and ideas are consciously or unconsciously conditioned by the culture of a society, and it is almost impossible to use language without a cultural base. One significant aspect of culture is language, and proverbs constitute one of the parameters for gauging the richness of a people\u27s culture. Proverbs are figurative expressions that are usually rich in imagery. In this paper, proverbs across cultures in Nigeria are discussed; in particular, three (3) proverbs each from Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba cultural environments. The purpose is to examine their literary and linguistic forms, as well as pragmatic functions in Nigeria. The nine (9) proverbs are thus translated into the English language, and analysed by: (1) identifying the figurative expression that each proverb conveys, and (2), employing presupposition to examine the knowledge of the \u27world\u27 of the proverbs and their contexts of utterance. The conclusion is that proverbs are in the literary forms of metaphors, aphorisms, and sometimes paradoxes and antithesis. Also, they are employed to perform pragmatic functions of cautioning, warning, satirising, rebuking, etc. in various cultures in Nigeria
Effect of International Fund for Agricultural Development–Value Chain Program (IFAD-VCP) on Rice Output of Cooperative Farmers in South East Nigeria
The paper assessed the effect of International Fund for Agricultural Development - Value Chain Development Program (IFAD-VCDP) on rice output among cooperative farmers in Southeast Nigeria. The objectives were to evaluate the program interventions in access to training and market and their effects on rice output. The research design adopted is descriptive survey. The population was 16,989 cooperative rice farmers in 19 local government areas across Anambra, Enugu and Ebonyi states where rice farming activities are being carried out. 391 farmers were selected using Taro Yamane and Bowler’s formulae. Data were collected through a five-point Likert type structured questionnaire while hypotheses were tested using the Panel Least Squares Regression Model with the aid of E- Views 10. Findings showed that regular workshops on innovative planting techniques, training on safe and effective agrochemical application, leveraging information technology for farm management, operation of agricultural machinery and equipment maintenance, and extension services on sustainable farming practices (P < 0.05), all significantly enhanced rice output. Also providing timely market trends and updates through workshops, investing in modern storage facilities, improving market infrastructure in collaboration with local authorities, and establishing partnerships with reliable off takers (P < 0.05) significantly enhanced rice output. However, improved transportation facilities (P > 0.05) did not have a significant effect on rice output. The study recommended among others that cooperative professionals and extension officers should develop sustainable training programs for continuous improvement of knowledge and skills of cooperative farmers and provide timely market information, market services improvement and stabilization to mitigate market risks and losses experienced by farmers
Inflationary Trends, Agricultural Output and Economic Growth in Nigeria
Rapid output growth and low inflation are common objective of macroeconomic policy, it is widely believed that Price stability promote long term economic growth whereas tradeoff exist between inflation and economic prosperity. This study investigates the relationship between inflation rate, agricultural output and economic growth in Nigeria, using time series data spanning from 1990 - 2022. The specific objectives of the study were to find the effect of inflation on agricultural output, the contribution of agricultural output to economic growth in Nigeria, and the causal relationship between inflation and agricultural output, agricultural output and economic growth in Nigeria. The study used descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, ADF unit root test, Auto Regressive Distribution Lag (ARDL) and granger causality to achieve the objectives of the study. The ARDL Bound Test revealed that a long run relationship exists between inflation and agricultural output, agricultural output and economic growth in Nigeria. Also, the ARDL test revealed a negative and significant relationship between Inflation and Agricultural output, which was in line with the apriori expectation and also a negative relationship exists between Gross Capital Formation and Economic growth in Nigeria, which is not in line with the A-priori expectation. Agricultural output on the other hand has a positive relationship with economic growth in Nigeria which is in line with the apriory expectation. The granger causality also revealed that there is unidirectional causality between agricultural output and economic growth and bidirectional causality exists between inflation and agricultural output in Nigeria. The study recommends that optimal economic performance could be achieved and economic slump prevented by influencing aggregate demand through active stabilization and economic intervention policy by the government
